So one day my friend and I decided we were gonna go up from Alexandria, into Winn, to look for a place called Coochie Brake, A large swamp area reputed to have buried treasures, large stones that were the remains of a spanish fort , and also some stands of massive virgin Bald Cypress hundred or thouaands of years old, I didnt really know exactly where I was going but I had a rough idea , knew it wasnt far from Atlanta though What I didnt anticipate was how
bad the roads were, and how spotty my phone service would be. Dirt roads were narrow and heavily rutted by log trucks, and there was no way a honda civic was going to make it. So we turned around and I remembered another road I thought we could take to get to the brake from the other side..but we had no service to double check, so we're just driving now trying to find a spot with service , came around a curve and up on this hil is a little church, and a trailer behind it where the preacher lives I presumed, and a cemetry. Atlanta Cemetry .
And hey , one bar of service . I like old cemeteries, and this had an older section in the back right areas, so that's where we went first.
And it was a very quiet still overcast day. Humid , early fall, felt like it was gonna storm later but it was dead calm and quiet. My friend is on her phone trying to look for maps, but its really slow, im sortve meandering along the back fence area , which seem like was very old , you could see impressions in the ground that were graves but the markers were long gone, or small pile of bricks, or a tiny foot stone, there were three graves in a row off by themselves with pieces of busted up orange ceramic culvert to mark the.. they might have had initials crudely carved on them, i dont remember but I started to get this terrible headache out or nowhere , and I felt my throat kinda tightening up like I was about to cough up a lung, so ai decided to sit down a second, rest , drink the bottle of water i was carrying. i sortve took a knee by this lone hunk of culvert pipe , and I was starting to feel pretty crappy. I have Epilepsy, and chalked it up to that, but I didnt want to be there anymore . Seemed like the vibe had changed , and yelled over to my friend across the cemetery, did the overhand let's go wave towards the car, and I get to it first , hopped in the passenger seat, and felt releaf when I shut and locked the door. Which was weird to me, because there's nothing at all going on. And as I'm sortve processing these conflicting feelings , my friend gets in , and before I could say anything she says
'Did the atmosphere get real strange all of a sudden, or is that just me? Because I feel very uninvited and I dont like it".
So we jetted out of there, we never found coochie brake, went to Winnfield, stopped at
Brendas chicken inn for lunch, and went home. Many months go by, and thats when I first heard the Name John West and the West Kimbrel gang, and as i'm reading about what happened to them the little hairs on my neck and arms start standing up. Becaue thats where I was at. Close to where they were all dumped, and buried. And John west had his head removed and displayed in town? Apparently other people claim they've see. Strange things out there too, Even John's headless apparition ..it's all a little too much to take a
Seriously , but having been out there, I can't entirely discount either.
I consider myself rational and logical, I do have a condition that can cause perceptional changes, but I've never had any experience like that before or since , and my friend experiencing the same thing at the same time would be one hell of a coincidence it they were unrelated. I'm not religious and didn't believe in ghosts, but I don't believe in them either .
That's my West Kimbrel Gang story , sorry it was such a ramble.

My Great Great grandmother was Mary West. It was her father that was John West. Fun fact...they were Native American. 🤷‍♀️

I’ll have to do some research but North Louisiana has much more English and American influence than down here in the South. Not surprising more English surnames exists there.
