Guitar: 1883 Antonio de Torres, SE49 SP/MP (ex Francisco Tárrega) (www.guitarsalon.com/product/a...)
Here's Pepe Romero performing "Mazurka (en sol)" by Francisco Tárrega on the composers second Antonio de Torres guitar - this one made in 1883, numbered SE49, made with spruce top and maple back and sides. Recorded at the Guitar Salon International showroom in Santa Monica, CA.
Pepe Romero "Vintage & Flamenco" light tension strings (www.guitarsalon.com/product/p...) were used on this guitar for this recording.
Huge thanks to the folks at Apogee Electronics (ApogeeDigital.com) for the use of their Ensemble interface in these recordings.

Rubato rules classical guitar. How beautifully expressive Pepe's rendition is, and how mundane is the piece played strictly according to the score.....
......this is a masterclass on why we need to bring the music into our souls before we send it back out. It's nice to play from the sheet, but sublime to play from the heart.

Pepe told us when he was here that he wanted to perform in a style that Tarrega would appreciate if he could hear this performance. Pepe remembers as a kid growing up around several of Tarrega's pupils - Daniel Fortea, Josefina Robledo, etc and tried to play as he remembered their performances of these pieces. Pretty cool - we think this is about as close to Tarrega as anyone can get! Thanks for the comment!

Julian Bream also plays Spanish pieces at a slower tempo. They sound better at this pace. You can almost see the rich and mellifluous overtones and undertones of the sustained notes floating around together and recombining inside the sound hole.

Though technique was always at the forefront of every classical guitarists' mind, the great players of back then only made you think of technique after the fact. Self expression and playing something meaningful always came first, and with modern guitarists i feel that they put technique first and songwriting second. I couldn't agree more with your sentiment.
