Do you get sleepy after you eat? Let’s talk about why that is and what to do about it.
It’s important to realize that it’s not normal for you to feel tired after you eat. You’re getting fuel when you eat, so you should feel more energized. The main cause of sleepiness after eating is a high-carb diet, but what if you’re on keto?
If you’re on the keto diet but you’re still tired after you eat, there could be a few different things going on.
Causes of sleepiness after eating while doing keto:
    1. Not enough hydrochloric acid in the stomach (this is usually not the big problem)
    What you can do:
    • Take apple cider vinegar (ACV)
    • Take betaine hydrochloride when you eat
    2. Your cells are not pulling in nutrients or fuel because of insulin resistance (this is probably not what’s making you tired, but it’s making you feel unsatisfied when you eat)
    3. Your insulin is high (this is the real reason)
But you’re on keto, so shouldn’t your insulin be lower? Well, eating also triggers insulin. If you’ve had insulin resistance for a long time, it can take time to correct the high levels of insulin. Even if you don’t eat carbs, eating triggers insulin.
    What you can do:
    • Do intermittent fasting
    • Keep your carbs low
    • Consume a moderate amount of protein
    • Give it time (it takes 1-3 months to become keto-adapted)
    • Get more sleep at night (take vitamin B1 and vitamin D3 before bed)

Falling asleep after eating especially in the morning after a good nights sleep is a classic symptom of food intolerance. i am salicylate intolerant, now recovering from a systemic collapse because my adaptive response to eating small amounts of fruits high in salicylates drained my adrenals and left in in adrenal insufficiency crisis. This adaptive response was first described and proved in rats by Dr. Hans Selye in the 1930's. Given how your entire health, treatment, philosophy and practice is wholly nutrition based, I am rather surprised you haven't dealt with food intolerance - it's more widespread than many know. I used to have to find a quiet place around 10am to sleep for half an hour after a good 9 hours sleep - but I would have had perhaps some fruit or tomatoes or other high salicylate vegetables for my dinner the night before. One man who developed a high intolerance to eggs, when fed a cake by disbelieving friends, assured it had no egg, fell asleep half way through the meal. !! Perhaps you could include food intolerances in your repertoire as it has great significance.

Thank you so much for addressing this issue. I do intermittent fasting every day. But do crash a hour after eating and never really knew why. I do eat pretty much the same thing every day. Once a day. I been eating a large salad with healthy dressing and baked fish one day and the next day salad and .or boil shrimp and crabs. And for something sweet honey oaks cereal with almond milk.

almond milk is FULL of chalk...which lines your intestines blocking nutrient absorption

This is me. I wondered why I was so sleepy on Day 2 and Day 4 when I ate lunch, I fasted in between and felt great. It is a sleepy tired, like I just spent the day at the pool, not quite the same as a Thanksgiving-day carb crash. It seems like the Day 4 sleepiness is a little less than Day 2 so I’m glad to hear that it is going to get better.

I've been on keto for years, and more seriously in the past 6 months. It took my blood sugar from prediabetic to normal and I lost 57 pounds. I gradually switched over to OMAD most days and that was an improvement. Despite this strict diet, I have extreme tiredness after meals that continues to wreck my life. Thanks for the advice. Here's how I am going to employ it. My plan for the next couple of days is to fast, with coffee and tea only. When I break my fast, I will take apple cider vinegar before meals, cut the amount of protein and fat in the meal, and take D3 and K2 before bedtime. I know I will be more productive and alert during fasting. It's the transition to eating that is the test for me. I intend to learn from it. I have 40 pounds to go and a productive life to reclaim. Wish me luck.

Undiagnosed sleep apnea was part of my problem regarding this. Get a sleep tracker and see if your sleeping through the night if you wake up tired. I used to wake up exhausted and felt even worse after eating.
A sleep study confirmed severe sleep apnea. I was thin and didn’t know I had this problem.

I've been doing OMAD more often over the past couple of months, and now I'm experiencing extreme fatigue whenever I eat. I started taking ACV throughout the day, especially immediately before, during & after I eat, but still, very tired.

I talk to my old dr about it she had no answer. A nurse told me one time it was a drop in blood pressure when all the blood rushes to your stomach to digest the food ?? Maybe it just my kidney disease?

I had that problem when I was starting keto and IF. Now it"s resolved. I have more energy until it is time to sleep.. I am not hungry and I notice I don"t imagine carbs I very much enjoyed.. Here in the Philippines. people are used to having Merienda or snacks 3 times a day and that consisted of 100 per cent carbs.

I understand that eating makes you tired but I get tired when I don't eat as well, just not as much. That's why I try staying fasted all day at work and eat 1 or 2 meals late afternoon/evening. Seems to work the best for me. I just wish I can have a tad bit more energy while working though.
