Shooting the Cimarron open top 1872 in 38 Special

- This revolver came in on Friday and I picked it up that evening. I took it home, gave it a bath because it was covered with oil as that is the way Uberti (maker of Cimarron revolvers) ships their guns. There is no chance of rust anywhere with these revolvers as they come from the manufacturer.
This revolver is very unique. It's nothing like the 1873 SAA that came along the next year, a much more refined revolver. Still, this is such a unique piece that just showing it to anyone seems to get their attention. It looks like an 1851 Navy black powder revolver. This looked like a Richards-Mason conversion revolvers that took these 1851's and converted them to breech loaders. Colt di this too as they tried to convert these guns. Only about 7000 of these guns made. Thanks to Cimarron for recreating these revolvers. It's a fun gun. Though, not a Ruger, it's still a fun gun.
Way to go, Ralph! Love them Open Tops!
Thanks Santee. They are fun.
Can these be in 45
@@brandonrange9236 Yes they can
Just got mine and BOY am I happy. I had a 44 cal. navy cap and ball that also shot high. It's the length of the barrel. Lets face it, at 750 to 800 feet per it's not a fast bullet. So the recoil has a chance to pick the tip up a bit before the bullet actually goes downrange. I dunno, watch Professor Hickock 45 shoot one. He doesn't miss much. He also knows a lot about these. Thanks for posting. If you reload 38 spec. for this gun I'd like to see a vid on that.
I do reload. One thing I can say is that we not load plus P loads. It says that in clear instructions in the manual I got. I have about 500 semi wad cutters that this revolver doesn't like at all. It shots the round factory stuff just fine. Still, I'm going to try some round lead ffor this revolver. The other 38's that I have love those semiwad cutters. Not much recoil. and still a fun gun to shoot. Thanks man. I let you know when I load some up.
I love that you demonstrated this firearm. I hate that you used a bench rest and got such a lousy grouping at 25 yards.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh ha h a ha ha ha. Amigo, it is what it is. A Ruger, Smith & Wesson it isn't. It's very normal for an Italian made firearm. It could be my load too. It seems to be rather particular. I did it yet again in this video ruclips.net/video/jB7lYXfL02I/видео.html
I have one of these in .38 Special and shoot the center of the target with 4 different brands thus far. I shoot standing up free hand and one handed but have a lot of practice behind me.
This revolver doesn’t like my reloads. Its not tight at all.
@@ralphperez4862 They all have different personalities. True ...

Great video ! Looks like a nice revolver!
Thank you. It is a pretty cool piece for sure.
My Cimarron "Man With No Name .38 Conversion" is essentially an Open Top with a windage adjustable rear sight and a loading lever. Mine (of course) is dead on with regards to windage after drifting the sight a hair, but it shoots high. I've never worried with filing some off the rear sight, at least not yet, but it patterns decent with my .38 special handloads (Lee .358-158 RF over 4.5-grains of Universal).
My reloads were Lazer Cut 158 gr bullets that I ordered. They shoot really well in my other 38's. I'm going to go back out with this one and try them again. The shots in this video were the first shot out of this gun. Plus, it was a cold day and windy. Thanks man. I may have to order that mold and cast some myself.
@@ralphperez4862 I'm tumble lubing them with Lee Alox and sizing them to .358 with a Lee sizing die...for uniformity.
That gun is a beauty...I'd be excited just to hit the target. Excellent shooting my friend!
Thanks my friend! It's a fun gun for sure. I'm still getting used to it, but I did shoot about 70 plus rounds through it.
Got to shoot one of these I need one
they are fun for sure. A little weird but you end up coming up to speed real fast.
Maybe you should try resting the revolver on the frame rather than the barrel .
Perhaps. All of my other revolvers shoot beautifully using this method. We'll keep working up a load for this bad boy.
I'm loving the gun but I have a hard time letting go of 800+ for the one with the in lay
Yes, that's for sure. I think you can get the inlays on line for a reasonable price.
George, try this... ruclips.net/video/sXTho5hL3YM/видео.html
Dude, why are you resting the barrel on the rest? Especially on an open top revolver frame?
Why not? I would ask you to put up a video to show us all that it makes a difference. I've not found it to make a difference at 25 yards in 45 years.
It looks very similar to the revolver used by Erron Black from Mortal Kombat.
I’ve never played that. I’m not a game player but a few of my grandkids are. I had to google him to see what you meant and I’d have to agree with you.
Can it handle plus p ammo? Or hotter 38 loads?
No. The manual says no plus p or hot 38 loads.
@@ralphperez4862 it's a pity,well,still better than 38 long colt.
At what disdance you shoot?
25 yards
Will it handle 38 +P?
No. The manual warns not to use +p loads.
If that's the best accuracy you can get from a rest I think I'll pass.
Maybe you'd get better. Rugers they are not. Maybe if you worked a liad up, it would be better. However, to each his own.
No it was not the result of shooting my friend. Wild Bill Hickok did that job better. For video like.
Wild Bill used a percussion 1851, not one of these. Not a result of my shooting. It did not like wad cutters.
👍
Thanks
What did you say🤔🤔🤔🙇
