Our Turnip Harvest

I'm harvesting turnips today on the homestead. This has been such a learning experience for us. Our soil needs more conditioning than we originally thought. We will be amending our garden beds & getting them ready for next season.

It's getting really hot here and turnips don't like the Heat. We also have an issue with pest, they had already begun eating holes in a few of the turnips. We harvested at a good time. Thanks for watching

Wonderful turnip harvest but I would still save some of the greens and cook with my turnips lol :-). On the Living Traditions Homestead channel, they bought the mesh cover for some of their crops to keep the pests off and it worked. Maybe that will help for your next garden. I was about 50 years old before I learned the secret to good mashed turnips was to add a spoonful of sugar! Ole lady told me that....cuts that bitter edge. I have never grown the rutabagas/swedes but would like to. Think I would have to order the seeds.

Just found your channel and I love it!! That's a pretty good harvest. My grandma used to cook turnips with some sort of cornmeal type dumplings when we were growing up. This video just bought back so many good memories. Thanks a bunch!
