    One of the legendary great bluesman . Tons of deep soul.

    I think it was John Fahey who said MJH was his technical role model as well as, to some extent, his emotional role model. This was a wonderfully respectful introduction to his style which is still relevant today.

    When I was first introduced to boom-chick finger style I listened to MJH's Lonesome Valley and thought that is both pretty AND simple - perfect tune to start with. Well very quickly discovered it is anything but simple. Eventually when one does have the bass / melody lines down pat, it just doesn't have the richness or texture that MJHs fingers produce.

      Man, I am in awe of the old bluesmen. My mind gets it, but my fingers only get a lick or two. You're right when you say it sounds simple, but it's bass, rhythm, and melody all at once. Eric Clapton said the breakthrough moment he had was teaching his thumb to play separately from his other fingers. That's hard to do.

    This video of John Hurt captures something WAY more than alternating bass. John Hurt invented "off the beat hammer ons".

    • @wheninroamful
      @wheninroamful 3 месяца назад

      He perfected it. But syncopated hammer ons are a big part of ragtime and piedmont. (I’m quite sure) Funny, Hurt was humble and in that performance/interview with Pete Seeger, he said he ‘copied’ his style from another guy. Hurt was a Master, no doubt, but so many artists didn’t get recorded back then.

    First time i listend to hurt i was so blown away. I knew merle travis beforehand and he was the one to bring this style to the scene first. But if you think about it: hurt was only discovered for the public in his 60th. So if you think about it, hurt played this style long before travis. He played it just for himself and a few folks. Incredible

    The human power if the blues is incredible 😊. Mississippi John Hurt probably never imagined his music reaching all over the globe…a young Russian (?) man in 2023 finding and feeling the music played by a man that probably lived his life without electricity….amazing ❤❤❤

    More than 50 years ago I discovered MJH at my public library! They would let you check out records and return them a few days later. Of course, as an avid fan of liner notes I read about how they thought he was long dead in the 1960s until someone tracked him down in Avalon, Mississippi. He had no idea he was considered a folk music icon😁. I love the way you dig into these songs! Do you ever go on tour? I would gladly pay to see you perform on stage!

    This it's the only style I could play for the first 10 years I played. Didn't begin until mid 20s way back in late 80s early 90s when I lived in Western North Carolina and found Doc Watson....he,played and gave credit to John Hurt for this style....and of course Merle Travis

    I've heard you and a hundred more that can cop Hendrix (my favorite), Merle Travis, etc., but never heard ONE that can really cop that riff from MJH, or something like Jumper On The Line from R. L. Burnside. Just seems to be two inimitable fingerpickers. But it's fun to try! You got some great stuff in there.

    They call this “Travis style” even though Merle Travis only used one finger, and Mississippi did it 20 years earlier.
