The RO 150 was the first Festool tool that I ever purchased years ago. I still use it on every project every day!
Bosch GET75-6N supposed to hit like a Mirka or Festool for half the price.
That thing is a beast! I love it. I have had wooden boat restoration shop for about 25 years now. Once you sand with a festool you can never go back.
There is a definite value when it comes to tools that falls under the “pleasure to use” category. Took me a while understand this. Even for hobbyists this is often overlooked. I currently have a RO 90 and ETSC 125 and love both. Am considering the RO 150 which brought me here. Thanks for the video. Well done.
Quality is better by far. I do a lot of sanding and have seen the dust almost eliminated in my shop. This is a must to help my family’s health.
Festool has a good sanding tutorial video.
The 2 big takeaways from that video are to start the sander when it's flat on the work surface, this prevents gouging. When finished lift the sander up off the surface and then turn it off.
The 2nd takeaway is work in a methodical manner. Start in one corner, slowly move to the other edge, overlap half the disk and work back to the other edge, repeat.
Also, light downward pressure is all that's needed, let the disk and sander do the work.
My chest is killing me now, one of my next purchases is the festool vac and sander. I have a 3 year old as a helper that can't take the sawdust, while building custom cabinets. Great video Matt.
I started with the Rotex 150 as my first Festool sander purchase. I got the ETSC cordless/corded sander within the last year or two. The cordless option is one of the best decisions I have ever made. So many times I just need a sander for a few seconds here and there. I have a few other Festool tools and wouldn't mind getting more. The yearly price increases are kinda irritating though. The Domino hasn't really been on my list of things to buy but if I start building more table tops it might be worth it.
Several years ago I worked for a guy that had some festool gear. I tried alot of it and could see why it was so expensive, it’s really good stuff. We trimmed out a kitchen and clad all the walls with rough side out ship lap as requested by the designer. Customer didn’t like it so they asked us to sand it down. As I reached for my porter cable right angle sander thinking, this will take about 6-8 hrs if I’m lucky. The guy I was working with got out his well used rotex. Went over the features with me and technique for a flat finish. I went at it while he did another task. I got done with the final pass of finish paper in 4hrs and it was really flat. The dust collection was amazing to. I haven’t gotten one yet, but it’s on my list for sure. That and one of those 3m sanders.

Several years ago I was fortunate to pickup a Festool RO150 and CT25 dust extractor at an estate sale. They were EXTREMELY used but still in good shape and the price was right. I fell in love immediately. If you can afford the price I heartily recommend it!
I bought the blue colour polishing pad and polishing liquid for my girlsfriends’ car. She had parked her car under a tree over a weekend and there was birds poop all over the bumper , bonnet and roof, it had actually left nasty marks on the paint. The rotex polished it all out with minimum effort so it’s not just a monster sander it’s an amazing polisher as well. Nice video mate. 👍🏻

Upon final glue up of planed flat build ups for larger table tops, I often have several areas that are slightly lower or higher than parent material. I will often use a joiner plane, cabinet scraper and then a full sheet of 60 grit abrasive paper attached to flat MDF to rough sand and flatten these areas. I feel the large footprint of the sander base will give the best surface because the large surface area makes for a smooth transition. I know that half sheet abrasive paper sanders are available but I have often wondered why a full sheet abrasive paper orbital/inline sanders are not available. I admit I get excellent results with final sanding through the grits when a full sheet is attached to MDF. The only issue I have with my process relates to extensive time and I'm tired of being the strongest guy in the woods up here in northern Wisconsin from this workout. I have used flat platen sanders for final floor finishing to level everything out, but they are way too heavy to handle in my shop.I have a 19"open end drum sander but a final 2"T x 40W" x 60"L Oak top is just too much to handle. I would love to have a 48 inch Timesaver sander but I'm just not in that market. Do you have any recommendations for a portable sander that would fill my needs?
As someone who sands floors Festool is the only orbital sanders that can be abused every day for years on end. The company I work for has several tools dated from 2004-05 that still never miss a beat, even some of the older style ro150e festo
Nice one Matt I use a festool ct midi with the ct va20 cyclone because I need to be portable for most of the time, I've had the same bag for nearly 2 years now and it is only half full. One of the jobs I have to do at work is deep cleaning a bio mass pellet store about 150 to 200 litres of fine dust. I can't recommend the festool cyclone enough
I bought the Bosch version . You can definitely remove material fast on the turbo mode. And you better hang on!
Mirka,dewalt,Bosch, and Makita all make dust extractors like the Festool for less money. I watched a video on where they tested them all against each other and I believe it was the Bosch that tested as good as the festool for the dust particles but all did well. Video is here on RUclips somewhere. For fast removal you need a 6” sander instead of the 5”. I personally have a 6” Bosch hooked up to a shop vac and have no dust issues at all until the bag is full on the shop vac and then I’ll start getting some.
Yes, dust extraction has been on the top of my list here more so than before.
I'm ashamed to admit, I'm a smoker as well....and I've been trying to seriously quit smoking cigarettes ( not crack or anything other illegal substances....just so we are all clear on that)....
I live in an apartment, and I didn't realize just how fast, fine dust particular can accumulate throughout my apartment...even sand a very small section of something for a minute.
I just go outside and still wear a mask now...
In the winter it's just so easy to sit inside, well, because it's warm.
Then nosie neighbors bugging you outside.
So, I have become way more aware of dust, and just how harmful it actually can be.
Oneida makes the Dust Deputy that sits on top of the Festool vacuum. It saves on the cost of replacing vacuum bags.
I ordered mine this morning. Its first job will be to remove heavily textured plaster to ready it for smoothing. It’ll be used in the wood shop most of the time, though. I am excited. My wallet is hurting, though.
ive got a 1/4 sheet palm sander , a 3in belt sander and a side grinder with 80 grit flap disc pads . that side grinder works so much faster for rough sanding i dont even try to fine sand with the palm sander or belt until ive used the grinder. there is a trick ive found to it . get it moving before you even touch the wood , and keep it nearly flat working it back and forth like you would a floor buffer.
Lol you mentioned vibration and I just thought "oh my sweet summer child." I JUST upgraded to an orbital from a 1/4 sheet sander. Hahahaha I had to wiggle feeling back into my hands sometimes with that thing.

Great review! I have come to value your opinion for tools. I also have invested in Festool and have RO125, ETS 125, Domino and track saw. I am now considering going to one of their 6" sanders for improved dust removal, besides bigger surface as I build Live edge DR tables. I like Abranet mesh discs and think they will perform great with the 6". Have you ever reviewed Abranet mesh discs? I think they last longer, but have no evidence. I like how easy the mesh is to clean, just remove it and put it back on.
It’s important to add that you could get similar results (as far as speed) with a variable speed polisher with a sanding pad (albeit without dust collection). A variable speed polisher can be had for a fraction of the cost and you can use it for it’s intended purpose: paint correction on your vehicle (with some education first of course)
Jeff, I'm not sure what your sanding experience is, or what your knowledge of sanders is either. But there is absolutely no similarity between an RO-150 and a variable speed polisher, besides the fact that they both spin/rotate. Now Festool does offer a polishing setup on their RO-90, the smallest RO they offer, but the 125 and especially the 150 are beasts, and no polisher will come close to doing what they do.

When I first got into woodworking my only goal was to have a hobby that would produce something I was proud of ! Then it progressed to making extra money and that was awesome. I had a pastime that not only gave me pride but had the potential to make some extra money. But after some time and watching these videos I've come to one conclusion! That is the real winning combo is not actually making wood products but to have a youtube channel that enables you to get amazing free tools and a serious paycheck to boot! Ahhh, such is life! The real rewards don't go to the people who actually produce but to those who talk about it or sell tools to those who do...
He's been a woodworker for less than ten years. Not begrudging the guy. I'm happy for him. It's good to see people make it. It seems that lately he does more product endorsement than woodworking. What happened to the Matt that connected with the common woodworker?
@@nobuckle40 oh, I'm not begrudging him either. I think it's awesome he's been able to wrangle himself into the position he's in. I've just noticed as well as others that his channel is more about tools and products than about actually building anymore. He no longer sells his projects to the general public. It's like I said, the real money is in making videos talking about woodworking than it is actually making wood projects.
I've had that exact sander for several years and I absolutely love it. When combined with the Festool vac there's almost no dust. The two modes and the speed adjustment make it very versatile. How do used mostly Festool sandpaper and recently I have used mirka sand pads and they work really good. The Festool sandpaper is a little bit more expensive then what you can get from a big-box store. But the Sandpaper is exponentially better

The Bosch GET75-6N is a fantastic alternative to the Festook Rotex for just $300 bucks. Still not super affordable but if you need a grate alternative that is miles ahead of a normal orbital sander well, there you go.
I own a Festool CT15 dust extractor and a ETS EC 125 sander, plus various Systainers. I do a few projects a month and have absolutely no regrets buying the stuff.
I use the 3M sanding pads and there is just no comparison.
It definitely helps that my local Festool dealer is only 3 minutes away…
I gotta order some of those 3M discs. I've heard nothing but rave reviews about them.

I'm kind of surprised you haven't dipped off into the weeds of carbide sanding discs (unless I've missed a video). Stumpy Nubs has an old video about them. I got a sanding block from DuraGrit and mannnnnnnnn, that thing works like a champ.
The rotex 150 is all that and then some. For resurfacing my red oak hardwood floors the festool cuts the time by 2x -3x compared with the dewalt. With the dust extractor there is 0 dust produced. I don't even wear a mask. The coarse setting is incredible, its like an impact setting for your sander.
I have the 125...I noticed it's really a big jump from my ryobi orbital sander. Should I put more pressure down on the 125? At times it seems to shake uncontrollably but I wasn't sure if applying more pressure down would be better than letting it glide naturally?

My Ryobi sander broke last night. I’m actually going to be shopping for one today, and you’re definitely not the first person I’ve heard compliment this one. I would buy it but if I’m spending that much money, I need to buy a planer first! Is there another brand you would recommend?

I say it’s the same for woodpecker products as well.
Although I don’t have a Festool sander yet I’m aiming for the EQ-150 because it’s more focused on typical fine sanding. It would be nice to have the rotex to remove large material so I may shoot for that at a later date. Till then I think the planer will handle the rough surfaces during the milling process.
Would you use this to sand down a facade for a wooden house, or is it to heavy? Long story short, i have a house with a mahogy facade, and it has been neglectec, so it needs sanding down and oil. So now i'm looking for a sander that is effective but also ergonomic enough so my shoulders don't blow up.
The first Festool tool that I would buy if I had the money is the Kapex miter saw. There are some settings it has that I would like to have such as the ability to make dado cuts on some material. 2nd would be the track saw and an MFT table.
Terrible choices. I would go with the sander, the domino and the dust collector. The items you mentioned are overrated and have better competition out there.
I've gone through so many dewalts im pretty sure I've bought at least two RO150s
I looked at the Rotex 150 and the Bosch 6" EVS Turbo Sander GET75-6N.... Went with the Bosch after watching reviews. Like it so far
Bosch has won just about every shootout. And, at 300 bucks, it's a no-brainer!
@@blakewillemsen9925 yeah that's what I found and I was able to buy mine for $230 after discount before they increased the price to what it is now. Was looking at getting a handheld belt sander then looked into these sanders.
I bought the Festool CT15 vac before the price increase. Been wanting a variable speed vacuum for better sanding. Sander doesn't "stick" to the piece I'm sanding now which is great and better surface appearance.
I got a Merka deros 6inch for a buck and a quarter at a pawn shop brand new and it does everything the festool would
if I may add: festool tools keep their value if treated well. So you lock up some money. Sell and get it back. And for proof: check the dump what brand of machines are dumped.

I would like to have a Rotex sander but I don't like the cost.
I'm making sculpted furniture. Think Maloof inspired. I start my carving with a Kutzall disk then move to my Dewalt rotary sander. It's $100 and I can do a huge amount of carving with it. Then I finish sand with a Makita orbital sander but I am upgrading to the Festool 125/3 orbital sander.
The advantage of having the rotary sander separate from the orbital is that when one fails you don't have to replace a $600 2 in 1 rotary/orbital sander.
I have the ETS 150 with a CT Midi I absolutely love it, but I’ve had quite a few live edge tables in the shop recently and I need faster material removal so I’m looking at adding the Rotex to the quiver. This video helped seal the deal.
Even if you use a cheaper sander if you hook it up to a vacuum you won't regret it.
You sand faster because the material that is removed is immediately removed from the work surface, you don't sand it over and over again. The sanding disks also last longer and don't get logged as quickly. It's also healthier cuz you're not breathing in dust and your shop/garage stays cleaner.
There's no good reason to not connect any power sander to a vacuum.
I have several Festool tools, love them. Couldn’t bring myself to spend $900 plus for the RO150. I got the Bosch GET75-6n for literally half the price and equally effective. It is heavy duty and the gear mode is awesome. Keep up the great reviews. Love your channel!!
I got the same one a few weeks ago. Paired with the 3m xtract paper the dust collection is amazing and this thing is a workhorse
@@krisbabic89 I couldn’t find paper to match the hole pattern, so use abranet. It’s paired with my CT15, dust extraction is excellent.
@@lesbentley4082 it lines up with the 6 hole patterned sandpaper. I keep a box of cheap paper from Amazon bc the net sometimes gets shredded on corners
I have to say again, Matt, it's your fault I bought festool sanders.... Thanks, I love them. I have stuck with the 5 inch models because I have a million sheets of 5 inch sandpaper🙂. I have the 5 inch Rotex but I only use it when I need to move a lot of material fast. It's heavy and beats me up in gear mode.

Sir, thank you so much for this information; granted, I don’t think my military retirement nor approving authority (wife) could justify that hefty price tag. However, I do wonder with that much torque will it melt the sanding pad that much quicker and how’s it for people with RSI…
the air flow from the extra holes helps but also keeping the pad moving while sanding is a big thing. i work in a cabinet shop and we use festools alot but we also have a few pneumatic for various reasons. we have 1employee that likes to jus press the hell out of it in 1 spot. he has ruined 3 pads in less than a year and is no longer allowed to sand, however the other sanders for the main sanding guys have lasted upwards of 3 years. yes the are pricey but 1000000% worth it.

Love festool. In one joinery shop o worked they only used festool but my god how expensive they are I couldn't justify paying all that for them products is rather buy a nice new lathe

One thing I would have liked to hear about is the hand fatigue topic. I know that using a makita or dewalt that after 30-45 minutes of continuous sanding I start to get that "numb" feeling in my hand. Would love to know if Festool has somehow reduced that vibration transfer to lessen the fatigue.
Eric, You'll get a similar thing with this sander as well. It still vibrates. Not a lot, but after long periods of time, you'll notice it for sure.
@@731Woodworks I bought padded gloves as I started having hand problems due to vibration. Problem solved and can sand for hours without fatigue.

Will this do large jobs? I'll be sanding a large building soon and I'm looking for a good quality sander that can put on miles, its a very iconic building here in Leavenworth Washington called cascade medical center and I want to do it justice. Huge job and I'm re-staing the entire building, so what sander would you recommend for large jobs? Thanks
I'm no expert in that area. But this sander is good for table tops, etc. For giant projects like buildings, I would assume there are more commercial style sanders that would work better/faster.

It would be nieve (did I spell that right) to say anything about the Festool without actually using one.
But I can say something about the price though.
For what it is and it's purpose, which typically is for fine and finish sanding, as your tests just showed, the time difference on the 3 "finish" sanders was nominal. Not many of us are going to grind down a rough cut board, so that grinding option just doesn't seem worth it.
I totally understand "quality" though, as too motor, bearings, comfort. I use the Dewalt. $80 bucks to the $400 for the same job in relatively the same time.....
Well, that, to me, an analogy, is a matter of....Do I want to drive a Mercedes to work or a Chevy truck. Both get ya to the end point in the same time, just one is made better.
It's interesting though....I always said...."Even if I become wealthy, I'm still gonna buy a Chevy Truck."
That's certainly understandable. I think if you multiplied that time savings over a large project, say a tabletop you would see major differences in time savings. That's what this tool is meant for, really. Large projects that take vast amounts of time sanding. And being able to use it as a polisher, for stuff like epoxy tables, etc. is another benefit. But it certainly isn't a tool everyone needs.

Another WAYYY expensive tool I have my eye on is the Woodpecker router station. I use a Ryobi router station now. It gets the job done, but it's very generic and time consuming to set up.
Having worked with programing my own programs and running a LARGE CNC for 5 years...Being precise just kinda stuck with me. That Woodpecker router station looks to be very precise.
@@Mike-ou5ps I've looked ath teh Woodpecker Router Station myself but you are right, it is very expensive. Honestly, I should have gone with the router extension on my table saw to save space.
I just use a basic ro sander. If I need to remove a lot of material fast, I use a duragrit carbide sanding disc. Just needs a cleaning every now and then, and it's saving me money at this point. I'd try a rotex given the chance, but I just don't see a need to move any faster. Not worth the buy-to-try for me
Talking to my doctor at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, saw dust doesn’t hurt your lungs the finish that they put on some woods will but, saw dust from bare wood does nothing to your lungs. we as humans have natural filtration systems as well.
so you’re telling me that sanding cocobolo or IPE and inhaling the dust is perfectly fine to do?

How about a electric hand planer? other vac systems ? do I expect u to spend $1000 just to prove a point? I know this isnt what ur channel does. A air tester ,a air cleaner, and a sander that is at least a closer comparison then this. Thank you!

Yes it would. No need for a belt sander if you have this.

The soft pad with the thick interface pad is amazing for sanding curved edges.
Weak point on these sanders is the velcro head. I find they just stand up to use and at $70 each to replace this
is a frustration.
If I wasn't alone in my shop all the time I would definitely bite the bullet and go with Festool sanders and dust collection. It's just me, though so I'll stick with my Bosch ROS which works okay and I have air filtration units in my shop which helps keep the dust to a minimum. Great video Matt, thanks.

The one tool you never see discussed is air compressors.
Why do I mention that here???? Because ....People spend tons and tons on sanding and finishing equipment and never realize that if they invested in a large two stage air compressor they could use things like Dynabrade sanders. I first used them 20+yrs ago in commercial cabinet shops and they are still the best, most versatile random orbital sanders ever made if you have a compressor that will run them.

I don't see Festool on many jobsites. I think if the risk of theft and the cost to replace wasn't an issue you'd see more Festool tools on more jobs. Just my opinion.
Hey, don't overlook the RO-125, you get all the advantages of the RO-150, but you can use all the 5" paper you probably already have. Yes, I know a 6" RO-150 covers a lot of area "40%" more area to exact, but you'll also have to keep it fed with its own 6" paper "$$$". I get it, I already have an RO-125 and would like to get a RO-150 too, but the RO-125 does so much with the paper I have, I just can't seem to justify it. That's why I bought the RO-125, so I didn't have to buy two paper sizes and it has worked out very well.

If you're still messing with dewalt, makita or bosch, you need to stopnwasting your time and buy a festool, the difference is so crazy that it makes sanding fun

Like I said in the video, if you only do a few projects a month then the DeWalt is a great sander. If you want to speed the process up and are making a lot of stuff, the Rotex will pay for itself in time savings.

That does remove a lot of wood. But the Cubitron mesh sand paper from 3M is a complete game changer. It actually removed more wood than using a carbide Duragrit sanding disk. And because it's a mesh sandpaper, dust collection was OUTSTANDING with my dewalt Of course, if you put a Cubitron on the Festool, I imagine it'll rock as well. But as a DIY'er, there's no way to justify the price of a Festool sander. If I were doing woodworking for a business, I'd buy it in an instant.

That was the beginning. No one stays where they started. Everyone grows... or should.
I still got em. There on the shelf. I don't use them but it reminds me of where I came from and that I worked my rear end off and was blessed beyond measure by God almighty. Am I supposed to always use borrowed tools and pocket holes? What woodworker, craftsman, etc stays the same? Never progressing and trying to do better, higher quality work? If I did that, I wouldn't be where I am today. At one time, I used a Hyper Tough sander from Walmart. Then I got a DeWalt. You know what happened, not a single person commented on that video wanting to know what happened to the Hyper Tough? Bought a miter saw, no one asked what happened to the borrowed circular saw....It seriously baffles me that some expect a person to never upgrade a tool. I do understand that some don't like certain tools or the price of certain tools. I totally get that. I would love to have a new truck, but I don't want to pay the price for it so I don't get it. But I certainly don't go to a truck guys page and asked what happened to his old truck. Doesn't make much sense.
If you look other woodworking and DIY channels and see their origins, what they first started of as, is vastly different than what they present today.
That includes better tools, better content, better build methods, better cameras, better editing and overall improved on- camera presence.
We all strive to get better not only in the shop but in our personal lives as well.

Sanding is out true hobby, everything else is a byproduct of that hobby.
