    Outstanding video. Really helps me understand the backlash adjustment because I am in the middle of rebuilding my 8.25 rear end. Thanks

    I've done a few rebuilds on Chevy with shims (basically R&R), but never swapped gears or installed a AFM posi and fully set up a 8.25 or 9.25. I'm about to finally install a new dura-grip posi and do a 3.55 to 4.56 gear swap on my 2000 Dodge Ram. Ever since I put these 35's on its been a dog on acceleration and maintaining highway speed. Thanks for the video's, reassures my confidence to complete a gear swap without issues.

      Late answer maybe. But the higher the gear, the lower your highway speeds will be due lowr rpm from engine. Your big tires already is equivalent to a big gear diff. Just like funny cars and dragsters. The tires get bigger at higher speeds to preserve high speed rpm.

      @@CFITOMAHAWK I got them in. Even did a video on my Chanel about it. It pulls good on the Highway now. Problem with big tires is it lowers the final ratio and therfore at 70 your RPM are low and out of the Powerband. Truck pulls much better and drinks about the same amount of gas.

      @@james4wd236 Do you have a V6 or V8? With a V8, you will have more low end torque and in power band even at lower rpm than a smaller engine.

    Thank you.I was stuck on how to adjust the backlash. You are the only one who showed a tool to adjust the back lash. I made a tool similar to your tool. Thank you, I could not have completed the job without your insights and help. I could not have done it without your video.

    Amazing video!!! thank you!!! following step by step what you did on my own cherokee xj I was able to fix the backlash of my xj, it went from feeling "slugish" to have a new life, as new, no more noises, no more dragging, nothing, just pure power, just as new. Thank you very much, amazing video.

    About 08:38 . I read those bearing cap bolts are 60 pounds of torque, not 100 like here. I put mine 3 months ago at 60 pounds. Right??

    So, I torque and preload the right side and then I begin adjusting the left?

  • @MiikeyLawless
    @MiikeyLawless 2 года назад

    Dumb question: If my diff is howling under load (which indicates too much backlash and not enough lubrication) can I adjust it this way, assuming my ring gears are still good? Just got this old girl and she needs some love.

    I have a question. I am rebuilding a Chrysler 8.25. I had to replace the ring, pinion and all bearings, races. The spec sheet for the pinion depth is .030. (the old shim gone from rear pinion bearing locking up). When I try to crush the sleeve there is still too much play in front pinion bearing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    • @Donnythelatemodeltech
      @Donnythelatemodeltech  4 года назад +1

      It take a lot of torque to crush it. You need a really powerful impact.

      From my first attempt at a gm 12 bolt, I had perfect pinion depth, good pattern and I read good backlash but still had some whine. Turned up the stereo for 5000 miles and went back in. Turns out I didn’t squeeze in enough carrier shims. Stuff loosens up. The adjustment feature of the Chrysler 8.25 takes this variable away but still loosens up so I’d guess you’d find excessive wear or initial big backlash if you opened it now. I’ll add that there are some cheaper ring/pinion sets out there that seem soft. Also if you start with big backlash stuff wears fast which makes it worse
