  • Today we show you how to replace the mirror glass on a MK5 GTI. A lot of times you would have to replace the mirror glass when the adhesive on the back of the factory glass loses its stickiness. You can tell while driving that the mirror is shaky and not sturdy as it should be. It is a common problem with MK5's and other VW's but luckly it is a simple install.

Took my VW CC to a body shop for a lose mirror and they quoted me just over $1,200 to replace everything. Watched your video, ordered the part for $18 and it's good to go. Thanks!

Good video. I am the only owner of a MKV GTI and alot of these "common problems" with the mkv gti i haven't encountered. If its possible, could you do a video removing and replacing struts and shocks on the mkv gti? Thanks.

I just used liquid nails glue from my local hardware store and works better than ever before only just stumbled across this video but sadly the part is hard to get a hold of where I live anyway 😅

@@user-ry4mv4no2e Yes, absolutely. E6000 should be easily available at any parts or hardware store too, I highly recommend it. Cheaper than silicone RTV as well.

Just had the glass come loose on the driver's side on my MkVI GTI. Luckily I was able to catch it before the glass fell out and got lost or broken. Is it possible to reattach the glass to the base or do I just need to buy the base and glass and be done with it? I suppose it's worth mentioning that I do have heated mirrors, which is why I'm asking about reattaching it instead of just gluing it back together now.

My Passat got lose and I just put some two sided tape on it and stuck it back on. Non-heated so didn’t have to worry about that.

Parts are expensive. I have a 16 Golf R and my L side fluttered and I did not know what was the problem till one day while washing my car as I came to that side I looked on the ground and the mirror had just fallen off by itself and broke in two. Now my R side < same situation< washing car and as I walked around to that side I watch the mirror just fall off but this time was flipping over and over again but landed unbroken. So best way to not replace that whole expensive mechanism($164) and how to just glue that mirror back on to the backing plate.

@@AdamKellar I purchased the drivers side AND passenger side glass at a U-Pull-It Junkyard along with two rubber bottoms for the cup holders and paid a total of $8.75. The dealer wanted $135 for the glass.

Hello guys great video, I know your a business and everything but instead of buying a $80 mirror you can just show them how to glue it back together a lot cheaper

Not everyone needs this video because theirs is delaminating or to buy their mirror. I'm replacing mine because the heater burned through the glass and it's now black corner to corner.
It's a great example of a quick fixit video that's specific to our cars.

can anyone explain at 0:40 on how to slide it back and take the mirror out? I tried but nothing budged. What do I slide back to take the mirror out? back means toward the back of the mirror? thanks in advanced. This is so confusing and yet no other comments seem to have problem with it.

V good, what's going on in vw, this happened on our mark7 golf
Does anyone in vw give a sh** from water leaking into wheel well of booth to water leaking in through rear door speakers. Beyond a joke at this stage.
Not to mention the battery life the appalling pipework of the air con that leads to leaks in the drivers foot well.
    Not good enough at all.
