Guinea pigs, hamsters, and even reptiles - they’re all a common sight in classrooms across the UK, but is this teaching children the wrong lessons about animal care? Several animal charities are now calling for pets to be banned from the classroom, claiming that: they are noisy and frightening places for animals, put their health at risk, and teach children that caring for a pet is part-time. Our vet Dr Scott Miller is live from Brampton Cortonwood Infant School in Barnsley this morning, whose teaching staff believe the various pets kept in school (including dogs and bearded dragons) are a benefit to the children’s education. And we’re joined on the sofa by PETA representative Jennifer White, who believes it’s time to ban this “cruel” education strategy once and for all.
