I hope this race can be a sort of a wake up call for Charles, because he may be a very rapid driver in all sorts of conditions (especially quali), but racecraft-wise Carlos clears him. It might be because of the extra experience that Sainz has over him but still, Charles has a lot to learn from Carlos if he wants to lead the team to a championship any time soon.
cos he has pace and nothing much else to think about strategy. He isn't a leader who can dictate terms to the team. I'd even hazard a guess that it would've been him instead of George to bin it.
@@jastormanthat was a single time in a car well suited to the circuit, but Lawson has proved himself over multiple circuits in a car that's been struggling through the whole season, even achieving points at a circuit that many describe being an incredibly tough one, so I'd think Lawson has much more merit imo. Maybe just a race or two more would prove his worth more, he needs time still.
@@foxgaming76yt24 Okay, but de Vries came into a car he had never driven and scored points, out qualifying and out racing Latifi (by a lap). Lawson drove the 2022 Alpha Tauri in a practice session. Not trying to take away from Lawson's achievement, it's a big achievement, just a little bit wary.
Doubly frustrating because it seems like he made a big step up in maturity this year, accepting raw talent isn't enough in F1 and getting stuck in to the hard work. And his reward is even more retirements...

It would be interesting to use him as a benchmark for Liam too. I have a feeling that Nyck got the worst of AT's performance slump in the first half of the year, and got kicked out just as they were improving. Liam's definitely an improvement (I think he's probably a future superstar) but he's also been a bit flattered by the car pace picking up, and being in the vacuum with Yuki's retirements, making his AT period a little hard to judge beyond saying he's at least competent.
If Sainz didn't help Lando with the DRS then I am 100% certain that he would have been overtaken by both mercedes and knowing from the team radio that it was 100% his call to help Lando with the DRS to help himself just makes it such an intelligent drive.
Not only was Carlos smart but Lewis casually popping his visor open mid-battle to scratch his nose, with one hand on the steering wheel was impressive.
All three rookies showed promise this weekend. Lawson and Piastri for obvious reasons but Logan, despite his Albon copying mistake, would close a 30-40 second gap after the first safety car and held off and beat Alonso.
Carlos this weekend proved so many people wrong. I always thought he was underrated because of his world class teammates hes had. But this weekend he proved us that he has it should the car be realiable and capable. I actually think race pace merc were quicker but he was so meassured, controlled and bascially lead the entire race on 95% pace to llok after the car and give himself thinking time to use his stratergy to his advantage. The last few years he's shown glimpses of his racing brain, but its been overlooked by him using it to overrule his team's calls or his great plans been messed by reliablity or bad decisions on the pit wall. But this race gave him time to shine and my god that was insane. Yes Max is the best driver on the grid right now but I'm almost more impressed by him winning so controlled under such pressure than max just gapping the field by a minute becuase hes the quickest
He does have it, but only occasionally. Maybe it is, as you say, because the car hasn't always been reliable and capable, but I've never seen enough consistency from him to be truly world-class. For me, LeClerc has a question mark over his head with regards to being world-class for this same reason. He's had only 2 wins in 8 years, both in the most recent two seasons. Let's see if he can push forward now.
I wonder if Carlos has found it. He seems to be using his brain a lot more now, thinking through things in the long term rather than just reacting in the moment. Makes sense with the experience he has now. All the drivers, hopefully, have this moment where they figure out to take what is given and not to rob themselves with a big mistake.
@@fallenshallrise In his defence I think we’ve seen evidence of that elsewhere in his career especially at McLaren and Ferrari but he was let down either by slight mistakes by reaching the limit or his team/car letting him down and not allowing him to use tactics he knows will work best
100%, Carlos impressed me more in singapore than Max has all season. This is not to slander max, but it's easy to win in the best car as one of the best drivers ever and with absolutely no competition, obviously, what Carlos did was just incredible thinking on the fly, Mercedes were absolutely hunting him down, and he had the presence of mind to keep Lando in drs range without his team saying anything to him which without a doubt saved him from being p3. George and Lewis would have flown by Lando, then flown by Carlos.
It was smart for sure but it's not the first time someone has used that tactic. It was clear that keeping Norris in DRS was his only chance and he executed that perfectly
The thing I love the most about Albon is that you can hear in his voice during and after the races how he's simply relieved to be in the sport and seems to be driving to keep his seat every race. I have so much admiration for that level of grinding
I want to say, the track changes, negating Redbull, Ferrari's strategy, Mercedes's curve ball, Sains and Lando double team, George's fate, tyre deg at the end all together it was enthralling Race. Got me hooked all the way.

I think Lando specifically was a factor in Carlos strategy. Yes Carlos likes Lando more then some other drivers and would be more keen to help out Lando but more specifically Carlos knows how well Lando can hold off other drivers ergo he had a tremendous level of confidence in Lando. I'm sure there are plenty of other driver ( Alonso for example) who Carlos would have done the same thing but other who he would have left far behind having to take his reduced chances on his own with no confidence in the driver behind to do his part (cough, cough, Stroll left in the dust for example, cough).

Carlos has said some times in interviews that watching Alonso is what made him want to become an F1 driver and has him as a role model. Carlos Sainz Sr was a WRC driver and knew Alonso from his early years, introduced his son Carlos Sainz Jr like 15 or 20 years ago to Alonso. Alonso has been his teacher when it comes to reaching F1.
It was really funny watching this finale because as soon as he asked for Lando's times every lap thr Sky peesenters were saying "hes worrying about the wrong car, he should be thinking about merc," and the first thing that popped into mh head is "is he trying to create a DRS train?" I feel like the sky presenters neved gave him thr credit for that strategy caise they were still wondering during the interview if he did it on purpose or not.
Why does everyone forget Carlos beat Charles in 2021? He’s not JUST coming into his own this year; how many times was he instructed to not pass Charles? How many times did Ferrari give Charles an advantage by putting him first? Several times this year alone…
Everything against him, Max still ended p5, absolute enigma. Such a long overdue race, with the team that made me fall in love with the sport, Forza Ferrari!
Honestly don't think Max was a flop. He was superfast and made up loads of positions before the safety car. And after he pitted late in the race, he went from 15th to 5th and was gaining 18 seconds on Leclerc in 4 laps. He might not have won, but did his best with the position he started in on a circuit known for being hard and almost impossible to overtake on.
Agreed! It was refreshing to see a non-RB winner, I’ll admit. But Max did what he always does and got everything possible out of that car. Drives like this solidify in my mind why he’s such an incredible driver - we’ve also seen similar drives from Alonso and Hamilton this season. Even when the car is not at its best, you can rely on him to get the most out of it. I’d say this weekend the car was a flop, but Max wasn’t.

@@jgbains if Ocon hadn't binned it, Max would have overtaken way faster. And might even have got a podium. And max was lapping 3.5 seconds faster than Leclerc in the end, but he had to slow due to the yellow flag brought out by Russel. He was 0.2 from Leclerc when they passed the finish line.

I'm calling it now...Sainz will beat Leclerc 2-1. These past two races are really going to mess with Leclerc's head. He's going to be desperate to prove he's still the Ferrari top dog, and we all know how well he does when he's under pressure and starts pushing too hard.
People forgot that Sainz almost finished 6th in a title challenging car. Imagine if any actual WDC or Leclerc, Russell had that kind of performance. Even Kimi and Bottas performed better.
This was a proper old-school style race. A chaotic start and then a long build of tension until some critical strategy calls. Faster drivers applying pressure on the driver ahead hoping to force a mistake. Drivers on old tires defending hard tooth-and-nail to keep their position.
I think even in the moment Sainz knew he got a lucky at Silverstone. It was his first win, and yet he didn't do Smooth Operator over the radio. This time he did, and he called it his first smooth operation at Ferrari.
Russell had every right to challenge Lando but they only had 3-4 laps left to do it. Switching would have been harsh. They should have boxed one of the Mercedes (Lewis) the second a car stopped on track knowing they'd be a safety car. He would have come out ahead of everyone.
after double stacking for mediums under VSC, Lewis got out of pitlane having George more than 5.2 seconds ahead at end of lap 46. 8 laps later, At lap 54, He was in DRS zone just behind George. Roughly filled 4.2 seconds in just 8 lap means Lewis was half a second faster than George in each lap, They' should've swaped right then(in around 55-56 lap) Lewis would hunt down Lando easily(if failed, he would've give the position back, He has done it before to Bottas in Hungary), then go for Sainz or slow dowm lando to help George for P3. That would be proper team game.

George on the other hand had to manage his tyres so he could pass everyone and deal with the dirty air. Once Lewis was in Russell’s DRS he could benefit from Russell forcing the others into defensive lines. (Like he did with Charles). Once they get past Leclerc, they have the same lap times until Russell is in the dirty air of Norris and Sainz.

Honestly, we are very lucky that Sargeant crashed. If there was no SC then after first turn of pitstops (from mediums/softs to hards) RedBull would be on the front with a few seconds gap and they were very fast on those mediums later on, especially Verstappen. Would've been even worse if they waited 3 laps with the pit stops for the VSC. So thanks to Sargeant we didn't have a RedBull win.
I don't think that's the case. If you look at the finishing times, Max was still way back from the top 3 even if you adjust the pitstop times, at least 10 sec back from Lewis.
@@mrthewhite2620 they found themselves in a field of cars with brand new tyres with old hards. The SC really screwed around with their strategy. Without it, they'd have had Verstappen leading for some laps before pitting and maybe dropping a couple places before having a sprint to the end and possibly another race win. As it was, by the time they had to change the hards, they hadn't really created a gap and dropped back farther than they'd hoped.
And he would go on to close the gap to the pack despite being 30-40 seconds behind when green flag conditions came back. He even held off and beat Alonso somehow.
I was already a fan of Carlos from the Carlando era, but this race has solidified him as my hands-down favorite of anyone on the current grid. I hope we see many more wins for him in the future. What a driver
Russell chose the quali trim, Hamilton chose the race trim. They should've allowed Lewis ahead and let Russell back if Hamilton can't overtake. he overtook Leclerc so much easier.
Hamilton should've chosen quali trim as well, if he wanted track position. Russell didn't choose his setup and win track position so he can simply move over for other drivers
Great race - something which made it so thrilling compared to the previous ones was the fact we had diergent strategies because of the vsc. It's rare these days to have a mix of strategies for us to watch play out
Carlos has been criminally underrated for too long, especially by Ferrari who put him in a role he dutifully played, of being the number two driver. He should have been number one from day one IMHO.
Kinda feel like people completely forgot rookie piastri this race, his qualification was out in q1 but he drove very well to end up taking p7 end of the race

Can we talk about the fact that Piastri and Lawson both scored their first F1 points at their third time of asking (Piastri in Melbourne & Lawson in Singapore), they both scored points here in Singapore, and Logan Sargeant is still yet to score a point in his rookie season? Williams will be VERY generous if they let him have that seat again for next year!
I’m probably biased as a Sainz fan, but I don’t think the gap Ferrari asked of Leclerc was to protect Sainz but to protect Leclerc’s brakes (and for the possibility of a double stacked pit stop). I think we saw that the best strategy to protect Sainz was to have Leclerc within DRS!
Sainz had an amazing race, showing he is the real No. 1 driver at Ferrari, great work to get the win. Lando is getting ever closer to his own first win. George Russell drove really well also but seemed to be pushing too hard and his tyres looked terrible compared to Lewis Hamilton. Possibly how they drive. George is unlucky in the end but it's this that makes the difference between the top drivers and the rest of the field. I'm sure George will learn as he will need to quickly if he makes these types of mistakes when under pressure he will fall into the same trap Charles Leclerc has.
Max Verstappen showed how amazing he is. He almost ended up P4 in a car that was sliding on ice most of the race. P5 was better than anyone else would have gotten in that car.
He ended 21 secs off the lead. He lost ~16 secs in the safety car, and then however much he lost going through the field. Not even a max fan but I'm pretty sure he wins that race if there is no safety car, and if not at least gets a podium.
Red bull didn't have the tyers. After the first pit stop on hards they only had used one's left. Max wouldn't of got in front of the Mercedes by that point he's tyers was gone.
deVries vs Lawson.. not wanting to take anything from Lawson, the current AT has 100 upgraded parts over the AT deVries had. Also, in the last 3 races just before being kicked out, he started to look almost decent.. with the occasionally Q1 or Q2 faster than Tsunoda. Honestly, I don't question the guy's talent or driving skills.. I just think everything was too much for him, emotionally and from a pressure POV and he just couldn't handle it. deVries from this year didn't look at all like deVries from last year.
On top of it Lawson is a product of the RedBull Academy, so he probably grew up with this kind of pressure and also knows how to deal with the RB environment
Lawson scored a better result than De Vries and Ricciardo in that car at Monza already. This was pre-upgrade. I personally wanted Lawson in that seat from the start of the season, but I can't deny that De Vries did a great job in his Williams audition. I feel De Vries would have been better off staying at Williams if it had been a choice however.

I think a lot of people saw Sainz as a driver just outside of the Top drivers when in reality he has been as good as Leclerc for a long time. This performance really solidified that he’s worth his salt.
Why did RB get a these free passes all the time? Max not getting any grid penalty for any of the three qualifying impeding incidents and then Perez made two mistakes and took two other drivers out.
Hot take: I think the only other person that pulls off what Sainz did is Alonso. Max and Lewis are to pace vs pace drivers while Fernando and Carlos are always thinking smarter. Basically if this was a fight, max and Lewis are gonna try to win off strength while Fernando and Carlos would try to win on strategy.
What a race!!! a shame for Charles I think with the timing of the pit stop as I would have loved a ferarri 1 2 or ferarri sandwich on podium but as a whole what a phenomenal race
I think Lawson is doing an incredible job, but there are a couple of things that have to be taken into account. First is that the AT has gotten massive upgrades in recent races that have been a significant improvement to the car De Vries has driven in (and may have been partially brought about by his feedback in the first half of the season). Secondly Lawson has had the advantage that, even though he is new to the F1 car, he has been racing in a very competitive super formula series this season. Not only that, but he has been in a fierce battle for the championship from the start. I really think that helps as it gives you an edge of sharpness in pure racecraft over drivers who have been away from active racing for a while, like Ricciardo was or even Piastri at the start of this season. Now having said that, I do believe he has done an amazing job so far. Even if there wasn't much pressure of expectation on him so far, there was the added pressure of the knowledge that this may be his only chance to prove himself and earn a seat. He has handled that brilliantly, but we have to be careful not to overhype him so much (like we did with De Vries) that it becomes an almost impossible challenge to meet those expectations.
I was also thinking is that Mercedes might be much more occupied defending from Lando to attack if Lando pitted. Mercedes would probs have to follow team orders of someone holding Lando off so they could pursue Carlos. Then maybe once they’re at the fron the other Mercedes can move forward. That’s just another possible strategy though
You mentioned Lawson's performance which was good but Piastri's from 18th(due to Stroll) to 7th on a track he hasn't driven before with a McLaren that didn't get upgrades was pretty damn impressive. If Piastri got the upgrades he would have finished on the podium most likely. McLaren now going out of their way to decrease Piastri's points. If that continues next year he needs to get out of McLaren end of 2024 when out of contract. The Aston Martin seat should free up end of next year when hopefully they get rid of Stroll.
Piastri is the number 2 driver cause he's a rookie. They're going to favor the experienced lando. But they are not sabotaging his race, for an example of how to do that look at red bull and Perez or Ferrari's normal strategy.
It’s a big stretch to say McLaren’s “going out of their way” to decrease Oscar’s points. Why on earth would they do that? That helps no one. McLaren is introducing so many upgrades this year because they’re playing catch-up in the development department. The team only produced enough parts for one car to get all the upgrades in Singapore. Every race counts in their constructors battle, so obviously they wouldn’t wait a whole race to put on the upgrades just so both cars could get them at the same time. They need to maximize every single weekend. And in this case, Oscar’s never raced in Singapore before so it makes sense for his focus to be around learning and getting comfortable with the track. He did a brilliant job. And he’ll get the upgrades in Japan. It might not seem “fair” but this kind of stuff happens in F1. And it’s not like either of them are in a tight drivers championship battle. It’s about maximizing points for the team as a whole.
HOT TAKE: For all the criticisms people like Seargant, Mick Schumacher, Latifi, Stroll get for their bad performances and being crash-happy, F1 needs these drivers for the chaos and strategy implications that come with their inevitable crashes and Safety Cars and Res Flags. People say this season has been boring, but what has changed from last year.... no Latifi and no Mick means the number of race interuptions has dropped sigificantly which would allow the field to close back up again and bring strategy adaptability in to play.
Lawson's start in F1 seems way better than Sainz' in the same team. In 2015, the car was arguably better than now in 2023, and Sainz had a whole winter to prepare with the team. It then took Sainz half a season to book his first on-track overtake, and it was on a GP2 engine driven by his friend Fernando.
re: Carlos and Charles, I'm of the opinion that "Carlos is struggling" and "Charles are amazing" have both always been overstated. Charles did have the edge over Carlos most of the time for a couple seasons, but it was rarely that big of a margin, and I think Carlos has been knocking on Charles door for more than just a few races, it's been like a year now. I like Charles a lot as a person and he obvs can be crazy fast, but as a complete F1 driver "champion in waiting" package, he's always been overhyped to me.
I guess they could have switched on the basis that if no progress made they revert -- given they're not title fighting it woulnd't have been a loss ... George was giving it all but i think just burned up his tyres -- Lewis could have had a crack for the last 2 laps maybe
Merc were able to be so fast because they had a fresh set of mediums as they took 1 less set of softs than the other drivers. I think Norris didn't have any fresh Mediums available so even if he was ahead of Russel, I don't think he would have had the pace.
Perez drove that race like he was playing the old Star Wars Episode I Racer game. He just fucking smashing into people left, right, and center and ram-rodding his was to overtakes.
Imagine if verstappen had pitted 2 laps later, during the vsc caused by ocon… he wouldn’t have dropped back from like 7th to 17th or whatever and with the pace he had on the mediums, he probably would’ve been on the podium too😂

Max stayed out for the sc of sargeant, dropped back to 7th at the restart, and then held a gap to the rest behind him, incl checo, then pitted just before the vsc of ocon. Had they waited 2 more laps, with an avg of 15 sec per vsc pitstop, he would’ve had a gap to the rest behind him to pit into, and then still end up behind the front runners, most likely ham/rus as they also pitted! And his pace on mediums was quite good during free practice as well as during the race.
@@bynahelemaal the problem was the tyers wouldn't of lasted till the end. They was going before the end of the race anyway. The team needed to drag out as long run they could so the next set would last till the end and they wasn't anyway. If he would of pitted any earlier the new set would of worn out sooner and max would of been a sitting duck and lost place's. That was redbull strategy that they played. They wanted a safety car another 10 laps or more later to make their strategy work, but the problem was they was falling back anyway. Max did well to get p5 with the strategy they ended up doing.

Redbull strategy was hoping for a safety a lot later into the race another 15 or so laps after they did stop but their tyers wasn't holding on and they was losing place. The safety car they wanted never come. They pitted to early for their own strategy to work. Max tyers was gone before the end of the race anyway so if they would of pitted any sooner max tyres wouldn't of lasted and he would of lost places by the end of the race's.
I disagree. I think that George did the work all weekend, he deserved the shot. It's a real shame that he made that mistake and missed the podium because of it. If Lewis wanted a shot at the win, he should have been better in the rest of the weekend.
I still dont understand how this year car didnt suit singapore last year they won even from 14 to 19 red bull not good only maybe the third best car samtimes secend do great why is the Flexible front wing or did same wrong setup but max pace in the last stint was good

Watching Leclerc go around the track those 2 or 3 laps under the safety car and NOT PIT was the most painful moment of the race for me. He was doomed to be taken by the Mercedes on those tires, the least they could’ve done was put him on some fresh mediums and given him a fighting chance. Abysmal 😞 So happy for Carlos, Lando, and Hamilton though. What a lovely podium.

It would be interesting to use him as a benchmark for Liam too. I have a feeling that Nyck got the worst of AT's performance slump in the first half of the year, and got kicked out just as they were improving. Liam's definitely an improvement (I think he's probably a future superstar) but he's also been a bit flattered by the car pace picking up, and being in the vacuum with Yuki's retirements, making his AT period a little hard to judge beyond saying he's at least competent.
If Sainz didn't help Lando with the DRS then I am 100% certain that he would have been overtaken by both mercedes and knowing from the team radio that it was 100% his call to help Lando with the DRS to help himself just makes it such an intelligent drive.
Not only was Carlos smart but Lewis casually popping his visor open mid-battle to scratch his nose, with one hand on the steering wheel was impressive.

All three rookies showed promise this weekend. Lawson and Piastri for obvious reasons but Logan, despite his Albon copying mistake, would close a 30-40 second gap after the first safety car and held off and beat Alonso.
Yeah so surprised they never mentioned Piastri once in the podcast, going from 17th to 7th he was the real driver of the day.

Carlos this weekend proved so many people wrong. I always thought he was underrated because of his world class teammates hes had. But this weekend he proved us that he has it should the car be realiable and capable. I actually think race pace merc were quicker but he was so meassured, controlled and bascially lead the entire race on 95% pace to llok after the car and give himself thinking time to use his stratergy to his advantage. The last few years he's shown glimpses of his racing brain, but its been overlooked by him using it to overrule his team's calls or his great plans been messed by reliablity or bad decisions on the pit wall. But this race gave him time to shine and my god that was insane. Yes Max is the best driver on the grid right now but I'm almost more impressed by him winning so controlled under such pressure than max just gapping the field by a minute becuase hes the quickest
He does have it, but only occasionally. Maybe it is, as you say, because the car hasn't always been reliable and capable, but I've never seen enough consistency from him to be truly world-class. For me, LeClerc has a question mark over his head with regards to being world-class for this same reason. He's had only 2 wins in 8 years, both in the most recent two seasons. Let's see if he can push forward now.

I wonder if Carlos has found it. He seems to be using his brain a lot more now, thinking through things in the long term rather than just reacting in the moment. Makes sense with the experience he has now. All the drivers, hopefully, have this moment where they figure out to take what is given and not to rob themselves with a big mistake.
@@fallenshallrise In his defence I think we’ve seen evidence of that elsewhere in his career especially at McLaren and Ferrari but he was let down either by slight mistakes by reaching the limit or his team/car letting him down and not allowing him to use tactics he knows will work best
100%, Carlos impressed me more in singapore than Max has all season. This is not to slander max, but it's easy to win in the best car as one of the best drivers ever and with absolutely no competition, obviously, what Carlos did was just incredible thinking on the fly, Mercedes were absolutely hunting him down, and he had the presence of mind to keep Lando in drs range without his team saying anything to him which without a doubt saved him from being p3. George and Lewis would have flown by Lando, then flown by Carlos.

I think Lando specifically was a factor in Carlos strategy. Yes Carlos likes Lando more then some other drivers and would be more keen to help out Lando but more specifically Carlos knows how well Lando can hold off other drivers ergo he had a tremendous level of confidence in Lando. I'm sure there are plenty of other driver ( Alonso for example) who Carlos would have done the same thing but other who he would have left far behind having to take his reduced chances on his own with no confidence in the driver behind to do his part (cough, cough, Stroll left in the dust for example, cough).
I've always said that Carlos had more to give than Charles. I'm glad that he's finally starting to show what he can do when he drives his own races.

Carlos has said some times in interviews that watching Alonso is what made him want to become an F1 driver and has him as a role model. Carlos Sainz Sr was a WRC driver and knew Alonso from his early years, introduced his son Carlos Sainz Jr like 15 or 20 years ago to Alonso. Alonso has been his teacher when it comes to reaching F1.
It was really funny watching this finale because as soon as he asked for Lando's times every lap thr Sky peesenters were saying "hes worrying about the wrong car, he should be thinking about merc," and the first thing that popped into mh head is "is he trying to create a DRS train?" I feel like the sky presenters neved gave him thr credit for that strategy caise they were still wondering during the interview if he did it on purpose or not.

Honestly don't think Max was a flop. He was superfast and made up loads of positions before the safety car. And after he pitted late in the race, he went from 15th to 5th and was gaining 18 seconds on Leclerc in 4 laps.
He might not have won, but did his best with the position he started in on a circuit known for being hard and almost impossible to overtake on.
Agreed! It was refreshing to see a non-RB winner, I’ll admit. But Max did what he always does and got everything possible out of that car. Drives like this solidify in my mind why he’s such an incredible driver - we’ve also seen similar drives from Alonso and Hamilton this season. Even when the car is not at its best, you can rely on him to get the most out of it. I’d say this weekend the car was a flop, but Max wasn’t.

@@jgbains if Ocon hadn't binned it, Max would have overtaken way faster. And might even have got a podium. And max was lapping 3.5 seconds faster than Leclerc in the end, but he had to slow due to the yellow flag brought out by Russel. He was 0.2 from Leclerc when they passed the finish line.

I'm calling it now...Sainz will beat Leclerc 2-1. These past two races are really going to mess with Leclerc's head. He's going to be desperate to prove he's still the Ferrari top dog, and we all know how well he does when he's under pressure and starts pushing too hard.

This was a proper old-school style race. A chaotic start and then a long build of tension until some critical strategy calls. Faster drivers applying pressure on the driver ahead hoping to force a mistake. Drivers on old tires defending hard tooth-and-nail to keep their position.

I think even in the moment Sainz knew he got a lucky at Silverstone. It was his first win, and yet he didn't do Smooth Operator over the radio. This time he did, and he called it his first smooth operation at Ferrari.

Russell had every right to challenge Lando but they only had 3-4 laps left to do it. Switching would have been harsh. They should have boxed one of the Mercedes (Lewis) the second a car stopped on track knowing they'd be a safety car. He would have come out ahead of everyone.
after double stacking for mediums under VSC, Lewis got out of pitlane having George more than 5.2 seconds ahead at end of lap 46.
8 laps later, At lap 54, He was in DRS zone just behind George. Roughly filled 4.2 seconds in just 8 lap means Lewis was half a second faster than George in each lap, They' should've swaped right then(in around 55-56 lap)
Lewis would hunt down Lando easily(if failed, he would've give the position back, He has done it before to Bottas in Hungary), then go for Sainz or slow dowm lando to help George for P3.
That would be proper team game.

George on the other hand had to manage his tyres so he could pass everyone and deal with the dirty air. Once Lewis was in Russell’s DRS he could benefit from Russell forcing the others into defensive lines. (Like he did with Charles).
Once they get past Leclerc, they have the same lap times until Russell is in the dirty air of Norris and Sainz.

Honestly, we are very lucky that Sargeant crashed. If there was no SC then after first turn of pitstops (from mediums/softs to hards) RedBull would be on the front with a few seconds gap and they were very fast on those mediums later on, especially Verstappen. Would've been even worse if they waited 3 laps with the pit stops for the VSC. So thanks to Sargeant we didn't have a RedBull win.

I don't think that's the case. If you look at the finishing times, Max was still way back from the top 3 even if you adjust the pitstop times, at least 10 sec back from Lewis.

@@mrthewhite2620 they found themselves in a field of cars with brand new tyres with old hards. The SC really screwed around with their strategy. Without it, they'd have had Verstappen leading for some laps before pitting and maybe dropping a couple places before having a sprint to the end and possibly another race win. As it was, by the time they had to change the hards, they hadn't really created a gap and dropped back farther than they'd hoped.
And he would go on to close the gap to the pack despite being 30-40 seconds behind when green flag conditions came back. He even held off and beat Alonso somehow.
I was already a fan of Carlos from the Carlando era, but this race has solidified him as my hands-down favorite of anyone on the current grid. I hope we see many more wins for him in the future. What a driver

Russell chose the quali trim, Hamilton chose the race trim. They should've allowed Lewis ahead and let Russell back if Hamilton can't overtake. he overtook Leclerc so much easier.

Great race - something which made it so thrilling compared to the previous ones was the fact we had diergent strategies because of the vsc. It's rare these days to have a mix of strategies for us to watch play out

Carlos has been criminally underrated for too long, especially by Ferrari who put him in a role he dutifully played, of being the number two driver. He should have been number one from day one IMHO.

I’m probably biased as a Sainz fan, but I don’t think the gap Ferrari asked of Leclerc was to protect Sainz but to protect Leclerc’s brakes (and for the possibility of a double stacked pit stop). I think we saw that the best strategy to protect Sainz was to have Leclerc within DRS!
Sainz had an amazing race, showing he is the real No. 1 driver at Ferrari, great work to get the win.
Lando is getting ever closer to his own first win. George Russell drove really well also but seemed to be pushing too hard and his tyres looked terrible compared to Lewis Hamilton.
Possibly how they drive. George is unlucky in the end but it's this that makes the difference between the top drivers and the rest of the field. I'm sure George will learn as he will need to quickly if he makes these types of mistakes when under pressure he will fall into the same trap Charles Leclerc has.
Max Verstappen showed how amazing he is. He almost ended up P4 in a car that was sliding on ice most of the race. P5 was better than anyone else would have gotten in that car.

He ended 21 secs off the lead. He lost ~16 secs in the safety car, and then however much he lost going through the field. Not even a max fan but I'm pretty sure he wins that race if there is no safety car, and if not at least gets a podium.

Red bull didn't have the tyers. After the first pit stop on hards they only had used one's left. Max wouldn't of got in front of the Mercedes by that point he's tyers was gone.

deVries vs Lawson.. not wanting to take anything from Lawson, the current AT has 100 upgraded parts over the AT deVries had. Also, in the last 3 races just before being kicked out, he started to look almost decent.. with the occasionally Q1 or Q2 faster than Tsunoda. Honestly, I don't question the guy's talent or driving skills.. I just think everything was too much for him, emotionally and from a pressure POV and he just couldn't handle it.
deVries from this year didn't look at all like deVries from last year.
On top of it Lawson is a product of the RedBull Academy, so he probably grew up with this kind of pressure and also knows how to deal with the RB environment
Lawson scored a better result than De Vries and Ricciardo in that car at Monza already. This was pre-upgrade. I personally wanted Lawson in that seat from the start of the season, but I can't deny that De Vries did a great job in his Williams audition. I feel De Vries would have been better off staying at Williams if it had been a choice however.

I think a lot of people saw Sainz as a driver just outside of the Top drivers when in reality he has been as good as Leclerc for a long time. This performance really solidified that he’s worth his salt.
Why did RB get a these free passes all the time? Max not getting any grid penalty for any of the three qualifying impeding incidents and then Perez made two mistakes and took two other drivers out.

Agreed. This race is way overhyped. They even said themselves in the middle of it that it was one of the most boring races ever.
Hot take: I think the only other person that pulls off what Sainz did is Alonso. Max and Lewis are to pace vs pace drivers while Fernando and Carlos are always thinking smarter. Basically if this was a fight, max and Lewis are gonna try to win off strength while Fernando and Carlos would try to win on strategy.

I think Lawson is doing an incredible job, but there are a couple of things that have to be taken into account. First is that the AT has gotten massive upgrades in recent races that have been a significant improvement to the car De Vries has driven in (and may have been partially brought about by his feedback in the first half of the season).
Secondly Lawson has had the advantage that, even though he is new to the F1 car, he has been racing in a very competitive super formula series this season. Not only that, but he has been in a fierce battle for the championship from the start. I really think that helps as it gives you an edge of sharpness in pure racecraft over drivers who have been away from active racing for a while, like Ricciardo was or even Piastri at the start of this season.
Now having said that, I do believe he has done an amazing job so far. Even if there wasn't much pressure of expectation on him so far, there was the added pressure of the knowledge that this may be his only chance to prove himself and earn a seat. He has handled that brilliantly, but we have to be careful not to overhype him so much (like we did with De Vries) that it becomes an almost impossible challenge to meet those expectations.

I was also thinking is that Mercedes might be much more occupied defending from Lando to attack if Lando pitted. Mercedes would probs have to follow team orders of someone holding Lando off so they could pursue Carlos. Then maybe once they’re at the fron the other Mercedes can move forward. That’s just another possible strategy though
You mentioned Lawson's performance which was good but Piastri's from 18th(due to Stroll) to 7th on a track he hasn't driven before with a McLaren that didn't get upgrades was pretty damn impressive. If Piastri got the upgrades he would have finished on the podium most likely. McLaren now going out of their way to decrease Piastri's points. If that continues next year he needs to get out of McLaren end of 2024 when out of contract. The Aston Martin seat should free up end of next year when hopefully they get rid of Stroll.
Piastri is the number 2 driver cause he's a rookie. They're going to favor the experienced lando. But they are not sabotaging his race, for an example of how to do that look at red bull and Perez or Ferrari's normal strategy.
Established drivers always get the upgrades first.
It’s a big stretch to say McLaren’s “going out of their way” to decrease Oscar’s points. Why on earth would they do that? That helps no one. McLaren is introducing so many upgrades this year because they’re playing catch-up in the development department. The team only produced enough parts for one car to get all the upgrades in Singapore. Every race counts in their constructors battle, so obviously they wouldn’t wait a whole race to put on the upgrades just so both cars could get them at the same time. They need to maximize every single weekend. And in this case, Oscar’s never raced in Singapore before so it makes sense for his focus to be around learning and getting comfortable with the track. He did a brilliant job. And he’ll get the upgrades in Japan. It might not seem “fair” but this kind of stuff happens in F1. And it’s not like either of them are in a tight drivers championship battle. It’s about maximizing points for the team as a whole.

HOT TAKE: For all the criticisms people like Seargant, Mick Schumacher, Latifi, Stroll get for their bad performances and being crash-happy, F1 needs these drivers for the chaos and strategy implications that come with their inevitable crashes and Safety Cars and Res Flags. People say this season has been boring, but what has changed from last year.... no Latifi and no Mick means the number of race interuptions has dropped sigificantly which would allow the field to close back up again and bring strategy adaptability in to play.

I'm a Max Verstappen fan, but at the end of the race I had a cramp in my jaws from a big old smile on my face that lasted 10+ laps. What a race!!!
We would watch this almost every race if not for your red bull and Max.

Lawson's start in F1 seems way better than Sainz' in the same team. In 2015, the car was arguably better than now in 2023, and Sainz had a whole winter to prepare with the team. It then took Sainz half a season to book his first on-track overtake, and it was on a GP2 engine driven by his friend Fernando.

re: Carlos and Charles, I'm of the opinion that "Carlos is struggling" and "Charles are amazing" have both always been overstated. Charles did have the edge over Carlos most of the time for a couple seasons, but it was rarely that big of a margin, and I think Carlos has been knocking on Charles door for more than just a few races, it's been like a year now. I like Charles a lot as a person and he obvs can be crazy fast, but as a complete F1 driver "champion in waiting" package, he's always been overhyped to me.
I guess they could have switched on the basis that if no progress made they revert -- given they're not title fighting it woulnd't have been a loss ... George was giving it all but i think just burned up his tyres -- Lewis could have had a crack for the last 2 laps maybe

Merc were able to be so fast because they had a fresh set of mediums as they took 1 less set of softs than the other drivers. I think Norris didn't have any fresh Mediums available so even if he was ahead of Russel, I don't think he would have had the pace.
Perez drove that race like he was playing the old Star Wars Episode I Racer game. He just fucking smashing into people left, right, and center and ram-rodding his was to overtakes.

Imagine if verstappen had pitted 2 laps later, during the vsc caused by ocon… he wouldn’t have dropped back from like 7th to 17th or whatever and with the pace he had on the mediums, he probably would’ve been on the podium too😂
Red bull didn't have the tyers. They couldn't do a two stop pit because they only had used tyers left.

@@chriscollins550 I wasn’t talking abt a two stop! Max stayed out for the sc of sargeant, dropped back to 7th at the restart, and then held a gap to the rest behind him, incl checo, then pitted just before the vsc of ocon.
Had they waited 2 more laps, with an avg of 15 sec per vsc pitstop, he would’ve had a gap to the rest behind him to pit into, and then still end up behind the front runners, most likely ham/rus as they also pitted!
And his pace on mediums was quite good during free practice as well as during the race.
@@bynahelemaal the problem was the tyers wouldn't of lasted till the end. They was going before the end of the race anyway. The team needed to drag out as long run they could so the next set would last till the end and they wasn't anyway. If he would of pitted any earlier the new set would of worn out sooner and max would of been a sitting duck and lost place's. That was redbull strategy that they played. They wanted a safety car another 10 laps or more later to make their strategy work, but the problem was they was falling back anyway. Max did well to get p5 with the strategy they ended up doing.

Redbull strategy was hoping for a safety a lot later into the race another 15 or so laps after they did stop but their tyers wasn't holding on and they was losing place. The safety car they wanted never come. They pitted to early for their own strategy to work. Max tyers was gone before the end of the race anyway so if they would of pitted any sooner max tyres wouldn't of lasted and he would of lost places by the end of the race's.

I disagree. I think that George did the work all weekend, he deserved the shot. It's a real shame that he made that mistake and missed the podium because of it. If Lewis wanted a shot at the win, he should have been better in the rest of the weekend.

@@user-wy5xe6ht2mtheir car relies on low ride height and benefit of no porpoising. But for Singapore they had to run higher which hindered their default/by design aero efficiency
Nice seeing 1st to 4th separated by about 3 seconds instead of Verstappen up by about 20 on 2nd.
Watching Leclerc go around the track those 2 or 3 laps under the safety car and NOT PIT was the most painful moment of the race for me. He was doomed to be taken by the Mercedes on those tires, the least they could’ve done was put him on some fresh mediums and given him a fighting chance. Abysmal 😞 So happy for Carlos, Lando, and Hamilton though. What a lovely podium.
