The irony of the pitlane fiasco being caused by the FIA on the first weekend that they enforce teams not climbing the fencing is top tier
There was nothing wrong with that. They can be on the concrete blocks eith their feet on it. And before you check, they all do. They can be between the fences, not climbing on the fence. They didn't climb on it.

My favorite part of the FIA decision on the incident is the FIA imply Ocon made the situation dangerous, not the FIA officials themselves.
They released a statement or are you making stuff up?
@@pianissimo7121 The FIA via the stewards literally released a paper decision yesterday April 30 2023 at 18:45, document #59. It says FIA representatives express their regret over what happened and will look into it. But blame? The only indication of blame is that the incident was "dangerous" because the driver, Ocon made it dangerous by driving into the pit lane when there were unauthorized people present. When I first read it, I thought it was a genius spoof joke. It was real.
@@SwinkMcloud holy shit. I am Speechless.
@@pianissimo7121 I'm not, unfortunately the FIA deflects blame regularly. That incident last year where they had the crane on the track in the wet with the cars still on, the FIA blamed the driver. Its slightly infuriating to say the least and doesn't fill one with optimism.
That part actually really annoys me.
The reason why Tsunoda binned it on the wall was because his front wing was clipped by his team mate and couldn’t steer the car properly…
I don’t think he flopped the weekend at all. He was just extremely unlucky
Specifically he wasn't aware it was damaged, it's a flat out corner so he didn't know he'd need to brake in order to make it. Not his fault at all, he had an excellent weekend
Look up his battle with Piastri after the SC restart btw. Outstanding from both drivers, best racing of the weekend
Yea Yuki had a great weekend in terms of pace
Lol. That’s a pretty lame excuse. The cars still steer with a broken wing 😂
@@officialWWMyeah they still steer but try steering into that cornor fla out with minimal downforce😂
Matt saying Pérez cant't fight Max for the championship is the jinx that we need
I do not see Checo being on the same level as Max the entire year I just don’t. His win in Saudi was due to a driveshaft failure on Max’ car and even this win was made possible by a lucky pit call during a safety car that caught Max out by ~10 seconds. (Max finished 2.1 seconds behind Checo so if that hadn’t happened he would’ve won by around 8 seconds.)
I could always be wrong but Max has an incredible skill that has annihilated every teammate he has ever had since he was aged 4. And the reality is that in 2.5 years, Checo has NEVER finished even a single place ahead of Max unless something happened outside of Max’ control
Not once
@@mamavswildbro the safety car bunches everyone up, Verstappen was not 10 seconds behind after that safety car. Perez was just that slightly quicker today & prob passes Verstappen for the lead even if the safety car did not exist

It's rare to see a champion this hated wirh only 2 titles. Young Vettel comes to mind, and Sebastian was a more complete driver than Lord of the Tantrums even then.
He also makes everything boring. Real-life Chick Hicks comes to mind 😂😂
@@LathropLdST Seb was that hated after his second title because he won 11 races in 2011 he didn't really dominate in 2010 or 2012 but he did massively in 2013. By comparison Max won 10 races in 2021 and 15 in 2022 obviously it's easier with more races nowadays but he's that hated and praised because very few drivers have dominated in that fashion in only their second championship Hamilton, Vettel and Schumacher probably being the exception. Either way you're probably setting yourself up disappointment if you're pinning your hopes on a guy like Checo who just matched his single season wins record of 2.
@@ronmastrio2798 Checo isn’t there to win…his job is to come second. Just like Bottas, Massa and many others before them…

Baku has always been boom or bust. I still think it's still great and worthy of a date on the calendar.
Yeah, it's either race of the season or dull as anything. This was easily the latter.

Nahhhh too British

Does nobody remember Michael Schumacher's win at the 1998 British GP from the pit lane? He came in at the end of his final lap to serve a 10s stop-and-go penalty, but because his pit box was past the start-finish line, he had finished the race.
Yeah, he technically should have been disqualified for that, cause he crossed the finish line Before serving the penalty, But the FIA was a even bigger joke then…… which is saying a lot lol
Michael knew what he was doing but FIA was scared of Michael. It was bs.
So he just wasn't disqualified for finishing without serving the penalty? How come
@@ezio9973 the stewards screwed up in how they applied the penalty.
I dont like the sprint concept. I miss the buildup from friday to the start on sunday.
I didn't have the stress in my chest from the "lights go out".

Regardless of whether you think the race and/or sprint was boring, I don't think it would have been any different if we had the normal weekend format, since the sprint and shootout didn't affect the main race. The sprint didn't "make the race predictable", everyone already knew that it would be easy for Red Bull to win.
I'm so tired of people moaning about "bad" races. If you were sleeping on Checo and Max going purple every lap, tagging the wall, squeezing out every drop of performance and saving nothing for the final laps but going for it anyway... I don't know what the heck you're doing watching a race. You apparently don't like racing. Go do something else.
I didn't even mention Nando's masterclass yet.
@@KevinJDildonik Yea although it wasn't a banger, I don't think it was THAT boring. Azerbaijan last year was a much better example of that. Once the Ferrari's exploded there was nothing interesting left. This time although there wasn't a lot of overtaking, certain cars being close to each other (and to the wall) still created some tension.
@@KevinJDildonik After lap 21 there was not a single overtake in the top 10 over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@kaiserconquests1871 After lap 21 there was not a single overtake in the top 10 over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Red Bull with track position just gets cleaner air and that brings pace. Gone are the days of easy following, even at Baku. Case in point: 13 whole overtakes over 51 laps with 20 cars.
There is a really cheeky strategy in only pitting on the last lap. If by pitting you would be lapped by the race leader (and possibly some other lapped cars), you can pit on the last lap, cross the line in the pitlane before the leader finished, drive your full lap to the line to take the checker and by classified on the leap lap, ahead of the lapped cars which would have overtaken you otherwise.
We all know if Max is leading and has DNF that would allow Perez to take the title then RB will need Checo to 'retire the car' suddenly
I don't think Checo got lucky because he was going to overtake him on that lap regardless so they pitted Max to avoid confrontation, Checo just had better pace and better tire management than Max.
Absolutely not. P1 makes pace and tire management much easier. After Max figures his balance mid race, checo would've never caught up to him.
It's crazy to think Checo could catch and pass Max. Stop believing everything you hear commentators say. It's their job to spew BS to fill time.
And Max was never able to overtake Checo for almost all the race. Lol. RB just avoided "their second driver" overtake and ridicule "their out of this world champion" that's why he pitted. Checo was way better than Max this weekend.
@@iKSmurf Max is not very good at nursing his tires and we saw it in baku when he was complaining with the medium tires unlike Checo which was pushing and nursing tires at the same time. Also, Checo had to push until the checkered flag while nursing tires and keeping the same gap. So yes, Checo had better pace and tire management overall.
@@lucegoldenaya We are contemplating when there is equality in the team, Checo can fight Max and that equality is thanks to Oliver Mintzlaff. Don't get me wrong I still think Max is the favourite for this season but Checo is the only one who can fight him for the Championship and we can see Max is getting nervous.
The main reason why the pitstop was fine is because it was at the end of the 2nd last last, start of the last lap. If it was at the end of the last lap then that wouldn't be allowed in the rules as you'd finish the race before making it to your pitbox. This is identical irl and in the F1 games.
I think you have misunderstood ARGBMF's question, they are suggesting you get DRS if you're more that 1.5 seconds AWAY from the car in front, not that you extend the DRS gap to a second and a half. This would mean cars with a bigger gap to the one in front would be catching quicker but would still have to follow and pass on their own. This should therefore keep the whole pack closer together and prevent a single car from running away at the front.
This would basically create a 20 car drs train. Seems pretty awful
@@syndicategaming1668 Oh, don't get me wrong I'm not suggesting it's a good idea, just that Matt and Tommy have misunderstood what ARGBMF is proposing.
If Le Clerc wins is the race weekend still considered boring?
Do people forget that checo was faster then max before the pit stop, and could have overcut max, or overtaken him later on? His pace was better then max all weekend long, max was struggling and couldn’t close a 1.4 second gap….. like max is good, but checo was faster, and I don’t think max would have defended like he did against Danny against checo.
Ocon was doing 80km/hr because he reached the line on the ground which is the indicator to slow to 80km/hr as he came around the chicane. Secondly, Kym Illman (F1 photographer) named and shamed the actual FIA official responsible. He made a video and showed the guy's picture.
please re-read the question about 1.5s DRS. the thought experiment is not to extend the current system, rather to invert the current system. think we know the answer, but want to hear you talk about it!
Have development freeze on car development during season. And every driver runs each car twice (20 race season). That way, you get a more representative driver's champion, and the constructors championship is roughly the same. Teams save money without having to do in season development, and we get to see each driver run every car. I'm mostly joking, but how fun would it be to watch.
don't give domenicali ideas like this
23:15 I think you two might have mis-understood that question.
From how the question was written, I assumed that @ARGBMF was saying that if you're within 1.5s of the car in front then you'd get no DRS but if you're further back than 1.5s then you'd get DRS to help allow you to catch up but then the driver would have to do the overtake without the help of DRS.
I understand the need to set up the parc ferme barriers before the end because they have to be in place when the first car enters the pits after the flag. The people, however, should not have been out until every car is on the last lap. I can even understand allowing the photographers into the parc ferme area early to get them that much closer to the photography stand.
I think that Alonso’s comments about Stroll “giving it a go” was something to do in reference to Brazil last year.
24:00
I get the feeling that you guys misread the question a bit.
Viewer asked "If it was bound to car in front being more than 1.5s ahead" rather than "Being inside 1.5s" which makes a massive difference.
One suggests that a car 3s behind the car in front can use DRS rather than the latter where you have to be INSIDE 1.5s.
It's a cool idea that could brew up some good fights. 2s gap you get DRS and get close, 1s gap you don't get DRS and you have to catch up to your opponent without extra assistance.
This way, you make DRS less effective but still helpful for big gaps to get smaller and potentially have good fights.
F1 is the kardashian of motorsport.
The nature of F1 over it's entire history has never been a wheel to wheel racing. I think we might be trying to make F1 something it isn't. 2021 was the exception not the rule. F1 is popular because it is sexy not because there is good racing.
Indycar, Australian Super Car and motoGP has the best racing in the business and it's not even close, yet those three series combined probably get half of the exposure that F1 does.
The tires are clearly the problem, the ability for teams to run 50 laps on one set of tires is just insane. The tire selection needs to run on the limit of 2 strategies and right now it has turned into a bunch of on stops. There needs to be more tire degradation and tires need to be selected better.
Red Bull breaching the cost cap was one of their greatest plays when you see what this car is doing!
"Esteban Ocon is entitled to run 30-40 people over" VERY NICE, BOYS, VERY NICE!
If Alpine had ordered Ocon to stay out because of the people on the pit lane would they have a case to fight the disqualification for no tire change?
They would, but the FIA is famously unaccountable for their own mistakes
The FIA investigated the FIA actions at Baku and found the FIA was entirely innocent of any wrongdoing. Ocon was at fault for not bringing his telepathic helmet to figure out what to do on the last lap.
@@o2benaz sounds about right
Re: Ocon pitlane near miss. Guys from The Race mentioned that photographers that sat by the fence and stayed out of the way for Ocon were shouting at the people putting up the barriers that a car will be coming in but the people were ignoring them.
Good point, that the non-stoppers could not be overtaken. I do blame Mercedes. Who else actually wanted these raised floors?
I thought the rule was that you had to use both sets of tires? If you pit on the last lap and your pit box is after the start finish line then I don’t understand how that is not a breach of the rules?
He pitted going into his last lap, not at the end of it. Which makes things a lot worse for the FIA considering there were still multiple cars that had over a full lap to go before the race was over.
@@Viirax oh I see - thanks!
What made the race boring was that the hard tyre was the only decent tyre to be on for the race, coupled with the early safety car, putting everybody on pretty much the same strategy… also, I would only fully judge the ability to follow on proper tracks with fast sweeping corners, since the ability to follow closely in slow corners is more about the mechanical grip… also, you have to remember that it was quite hot for race day, necessitating that they drop back to help keep temperatures under control as well as helping stretch out the life of the hard tyres
And the new regs (2022) reduced slip stream, finally someone else who sees a problem with judging the ability to follow with some consideration for other variables. Also the cars are closer on performance then ever, so harder to get an offset big enough and Norris was slower on the straights than Hülkenberg, that is had a DRS train works fast on straights car then not as fast on straight car and as third you can't do anything.
After lap 21 there was not a single overtake in the top 10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only criticism of this podcast is it's not twice as long and twice as frequent, literally installed a podcast app just to listen to you.
All they said could be said in 25 minutes or less they are just repeating themselves over and over how in the world could this possibly be twice as long? Haha
They lost 1 member so it's natural that an avg pods will be shorter
Why not have the option of scrapping mandatory pit stops? You might get a greater mix of strategy with some risking the whole race on hards to gain position? Or would it create more tyre management?
I wonder if a "simplification of aero" like we had in 2009(?) where they really stomped out a lot of intricate aero parts and so on would help.
honestly the biggest help would be shorter wheelbases. they added a maximum length, now go in and shorten it by about a foot and a half, shorten the overhangs, keep the other rules the same and all of a sudden you have smaller cars that will be less stable and thus they will be harder to drive perfectly. it would also come with inherently lighter weight because theres less car. maybe free up the engine regs in the regard of configuration and make *some* variability in the PU department. if theyre hitting fuel use requirements and not putting black smoke on the track, does the exact angle of the V matter? does the V versus inline or boxer matter if they still hit those "plug and play" requirements for engines that let teams swap supplier without an entire car redesign?
Let's get an RPM guest appearance. He might be a brand risk (lol), but it would be a banger of an episode.
Thanks for being the best f1 podcast team on RUclips.
Max pitting just before the safety car could be Matts RedBull merch working slightly already 🤔
I saw your video and you can hide your bias towards Sergio Perez. Amazing week winning the race and spring and you guys can give him his due credit. Checo is on another level this year and the only one that will give Max a fight for the championship.
That was such a stinker, it almost felt like FIA let those people out to spice things up.
Imagine the controversy!
After lap 21 there was not a single overtake in the top 10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If Redbell does not pull Max in and virtual safety car is issued, everyone behind Max and Checo get a sharply reduced pit stop.
Max never got with in a second of Checo after... so, I don't see why the safety car is viewed as an end all, be all.
Remove DRS, remove sprint races, add a one lap shootout for Q3, ban Adrian Newey (he is just too skilled), lower the total weight and size of the cars, go to Kyalami, allow more (engine) configurations in the technical regulations, make the calendar more logical travel wise and don't use F1 as a way to fill up a weekend but instead improve or add better support classes. Also, Tsunoda is underrated af.
The FIA changed from a tractor on the track to people standing in pit lane. What is next, a group of babies in prams out in pit lane. Just being a bit sarcastic. With the DRS trains, why don't they get rid of the DRS and use push to pass like IndyCar. You get a set number of pushes that last 15 or 20 seconds that add 50 or 75 hp . This way the chasing car can use it when they want and the car being chased can use it to defend. Since you are given only a set number of pushes of the push to pass button once your out of pushes your done.
Well if there is no rain predicted in Miami at least the racetrack won't be underwater
I think what’s funniest about the whole final lap pit lane fiasco, they don’t have to be there for the last lap simply due to the fact that there’s also a cool down lap to get back to parc ferme which I would believe isn’t at racing speed
So in Monaco drivers will be able to stay on hard tires all race with a queue behind them and then just drive through the pit lane to cross the line - that doesn’t sound right!?
No, they cant pit right at the end, they can however pit at the start of the final lap like Ocon did.
In attempt to jinx Redbull, Matt will see himself become the villain he swore to defeat by himself becoming a Redbull fan.
Fia just wanted a old school vibe in the pitlane.
Good thing nothing happened.
RB crew was in the fence too.
The new rules says you can’t climb the fence. They were standing on the concrete base. So They didn’t even break the new rule.

The spring format really hadn't work at all. On one of the more chaotic track, we have the top four team taking up the top 8 spots in both races. I genuinely think it's due to lack of practice, where the top team has a base car good enough that they don't need as much setting changes.
I'm surprised it's taken so long for the teams to screw up the following car's aero. But if the FIA hadn't changed the rules it would have been much worse.
I agree. One of the best F1 podcast on RUclips. Greetings from Poland :D
I require a "Tommy's Tantrum" T-Shirt now.
I always thought you couldnt pit on the last lap because of that one time Michael Schumacher served a pitlane penalty on the last lap of a race, (silverstone i think) but i guess thats different as that was a penalty, not a mandated pitstop and this was over a decade ago.
Matt and Tommy, your have something incorrect, Ocon didn't stop during his last lap, he stopped with one lap to go, it was Perez's last lap because he had nearly lapped Ocon, but it wasn't Ocon's last lap.
Friday: FP1 - Normal Qualifying that sets the grid on Sunday
Saturday: one shot quali where who qualified 1st in Friday goes out first, 2nd goes out etc that sets the sprint grid - Sprint that has a mandatory stop
Sunday: Race where you have to use soft, medium and hard once each (unless rain)
I'm an F1 newbie and watching it with my brother-in-law (long time F1 fan) and we simultaneously look at each other and say to each other: "doesn't Ocon still have to pit?" Right before this happens. Scary.
The FIA loves allowing things that don’t belong to get in the way of race cars: People; Tractors; Mazepin
I think the shortening of the DRS zone on the main straight played a big factor in the inability to overtake. That at least would have given opportunities to pass into turn 1, even in a DRS train, for other teams besides RB who can seemingly overtake anywhere at anytime
If FIA implements the penalty points on themselves, they would have been banned from a race already.
Oh they would've had a 2 year ban by this point, at least
My favorite part of the pitlane incident is that Kym Illman reports that the people in the fast lane? Scrutineers, not photogs
There are already been a lot of points about why letting people into the pit lane was stupid, but was if it was a car that was on fire that rolled into the pit? We have seen cars catch fire at the end of a race before. I think nobody should being going beyond where they are allowed at any other point during a race until everything is completely stabilized and especially not possibly blocking off access the the cars themselves. Also they make it sounds as if they have been doing this procedure for a long time, I don't think they have.
Matt talking about not being able to pit on the last lap in the F1 games:
*FLASHBACKS TO 2016 SPAIN RUclipsR CHAMPIONSHIP INTENSIFIES*
The budget cap is in a way restricting teams from developing their cars in season. Innovation is being discouraged which leads to many teams stuck with bad cars. Budget cap has to raised to have more margin to develop the car in season.
Like Matt said here, I thought there was something about pitting on the last lap which meant it wasn't allowed? I'm old and seem to remember ... I think it was Michael Schumacher, maybe at Silverstone ... who pitted on the last lap of the race to take a penalty, but he passed the finish line when doing it, thus finding a loop hole. Maybe this was for a stop-go penalty and after this they changed stop-go to time penalties near the end of races ...
Ocon was on lap 50/51 when he pit. It's just that he was close to getting lapped by Checo who was already on the 51st lap
33:30 Yes, we had a high expectation from one race, but he also didn't want to be called a "rookie" and he's making rookie mistakes. He's really just done this to himself, if he wasn't so adamant he wasn't a rookie we might not be judging him so harshly here.
7:36 The only things preventing you from leaving a one-stopper until the last lap are tyre deg and common sense in the strategy department.
If you can, you should be able to outrun the opposition with higher tyre deg and take advantage of any safety car in the late stage of the race. Or wait out to see if there'll be rain in changing weather conditions. You can't just ban people from pitting at any valid lap, including the last.
Max is bassicly like Yuki he can't control himself so angry all the time
With a minute of VSC, Max's stop would in theory perhaps have been advantageous. But even with that, it's rather a risk than an opportunity. Just wait a lap and keep the lead.
If they don’t have enough time to get to where they need to be at the end of the race, they should provide all the photographers with a golf cart and drop them off
The irony of the situation is that the problem is of the team's own making. Teams complained about porpoising and instead of telling the teams to figure it out, the FIA caved
24:13 i think the boys misunderstood this question. Its more of DRS enabled at all times when the car is outside 1.5sec, and then Disabled when within a second.
Matt: "...where their careers have ended..."
Gasly: "WHAT?!"
If we're going to expand DRS, then why not make it available whenever you're within an hour of the car ahead, and expand the DRS zones to include every part of the track within five miles of the current zones?
With the porpoising - can't they design/have/use a bouncy meter that detects how bad the bounce is and that must be within certain limits. Then the cars can raise or drop the floor to stay in those legal limits. The better you manage that as a team, the better for you. Or is it like that already?
Love these two❤
Keep up the good work, btw that method of trying to course Max is not gonna work no lie 🤣😂
So sprint weekend should be like this-
1. We have Practice 1 on friday followed by the Main race qualifying. In which the Top 10 will maintain their starting positions for the grid on sunday.
2. Have sprint qualifying as usual or maybe have 1 LAP shootout based on the championship position. That means the P1 in championship goes first and so on.
Then we have sprint race where, apart from top 10 in qulaifying, The finish order will define the order for other 10 grid positions for the race that is from 11 to 20.
So even if Say sainz qulaifies p5 on friday but DNF on saturday sprint he will start at still start at p5 in sunday, but if someone else say gasly qualifies p15 on friday but in is in top 10, he will get p11 and so on for the finishing order.
3. We have final race on sunday.
This way in sprint everyone is playing for something. P1 to p8 for points p9 and p10 looking to grt to points and not dropping too far and everyone is trying get grid position for the race.
This can make sprint little interesting for each driver and team.
The reason they can't follow is because they allowed loads of vortices creating geometry along the floor to account for the raise in the floor height. Just disallow this and make the floor edge really simple. They will probably lose a load of downforce but that's the choice they have to make. Do they want cars that can corner like they are on rails or cars that can race?
Check out 80s Rally, that`s mental
With regards to the pit lane incident, I sadly don't think the FIA is going to make changes until something tragic happens. Governing bodies always wait to make changes until they're forced.
There was already people putting out barriers when George pitted on the previous lap
I think the problem that's limiting overtaking are the tire compounds. This race really highlighted the extra degredation tires take from following too closely to another car, and that was something that started to come up at the end of last season. The issue with better aero creating dirty air will always be a problem, but we're now seeing it not only hurt aero efficiency when following, but also cooking the tires to the point of forcing drivers to hang back out of drs range to avoid having to take another pit stop.
But maybe the increased ride height is causing the dirty air to be hotter?
After lap 21 there was not a single overtake in the top 10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, Michael Schumacher once finished a race in the pit lane.
But I do feel that a pit stop should be 3 laps before the end. Drivers that want to go for the fastest lap can still go for it, while the safety in the pit lane is preserved.
I wonder how good RB really are in dirty air. Seems like whoever gets ahead more or less stays ahead (compared to the other RB at least).
Is all Mercedes fault! They were the ones that made the change on the floor happened, because they got their concept wrong and they did not wanted to admitted.
What I do find funny is that even after they FIA change the rules to try to help Merc and to damage RB, Merc is still way off the pace and RB is dominating!
There was mention in a different video by someone that was there in the pits with proper credentials, it wasn't actually the photographers. The photographers remained in the fenced area to get position for the top 3 parking. It was actually FIA scrutineers that walked onto the lane. If that's true, you had FIA causing a problem after being released by another FIA.
The clear reason why this race was so bad is that it was 3 weeks off and then a terrible race if we had a decent race last week and another next week we would look at this race as it's boring but it's a blip the problem is with so long off and then a crap race it seems even worse.
Audio Mix on this one is great :D
The entire pit lane thing is about GREED and the complete disrespect of teams and the drivers. WE need to get out there. WE need to set up our cameras. WE need. Take Take Take. It's like the race and the teams and the drivers AND THE FANS do not matter. Formula One does not stop this from happening, they will be the racing version of Bud Lite.
I need Tommy as my anger translator
I've just noticed that Tommys got that "YeaYeaah" guitar hanging on the wall
