I've suffered from depression cyclically all my life, but, strangely enough, I was completely unaffected by covid. If anything, I remember feeling like the world was kinda running at my pace for once (not the best analogy, but can't come with anything better right now). Of course I was aware of how dramatic, dangerous and traumatic the whole situation was worldwide, and never did I wish for it to continue longer than it did. But in this suddenly askew world I found some strange sense of comfort in my day-to-day life.
That said, I don't find it difficult to imagine the effects that covid and its thousands consequences have had on most people, and I'm sorry Aidan was so badly affected.
Depression medications are a godsend, but the truth is that 95% of the times is a case of trial and error on the part of the doctors. Everyone reacts differently to substances that act on the chemical imbalances in our brain. And being on a wrong med during the pandemic must have been so hard to bear!
I can't imagine the pain of a mother calling the authorities and saying that her son could be a danger to himself or others. My thoughts are with Aidan: that he may be found by his loving family and that he may find himself again. ❤

I feel much the same, although my experience with Covid was coloured by the fact that I contracted a nasty case just before our first lockdown began, and it became a 3 year (so far) case of Long Covid, so I was observing it all through a hazy lens of serious illness. I actually enjoyed seeing the world being quiet and still for a change, even if I was in serious pain, and in quarantine for months. I'm also on the autistic spectrum, and the sudden peace outside my window was soothing to my usually overstimulated brain. Mentally, the hardest part of the pandemic for me has been coming to accept that I'm now chronically ill and disabled, and the loss of what had been meaningful work as a talk and art therapist myself - working to help other people's mental health has helped my own significantly!
I'm personally on the fence about antidepressant medications. On one hand, they've doubtless saved my life in the short term on more than one occasion, but the side effects are usually downplayed, many GPs overprescribe them without full understanding of their possible negative effects, and the fact that so many of them are highly addictive has never been sufficiently made public. In fact, most doctors will deny that they are addictive, and will call them "dependency forming", weasel words that don't lessen the hellish withdrawl symptoms that go with missing even a single dose, let alone any attempts to discontinue the medications because they've stopped being effective, or because of long-term side effects. This dishonesty disturbs me deeply as both a patient and a mental health worker, and I would personally only recommend their use as a relatively short-term, band aid solution while more effective solutions are sought. I'm of the opinion that a lot of people's mental health problems can be helped by improving their living conditions, and with intensive, compassionate therapies combined with community programs that involve interpersonal connection and support systems. This obviously doesn't apply to severe disorders like schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders, where medication is a necessary evil, but I don't think that only throwing pills at depression and anxiety is a viable solution either. Meds can help, but they aren't a cure, and sometimes they do more harm than good.

@@neuralmute What an excellent comment! Thank you for that!
I fully agree with you on the fact that therapy is the most important step in one's own mental health journey. I'm a firm believer in psychotherapy. I've seen it work wonders on my mum (who had issues that went further than clinical depression and was in psychoanalysis for years and years) and I myself benefited immensely from it.
I actually know more about therapy than antidepressants, so I take your comment about side effects, possible dependency and the doctors' attitude towards prescribing such medications totally on board. You sound much more knowledgeable on this subject than me.
For the record, I only tried antidepressants twice and I found them unpleasant in one case and only mildly helpful in the other.
I'd say I like the fact that these medications are available, but I understand the points you make.
Also, the fact that you call doctors GPs leads me to believe you may be in the UK, which is where I live.
I'm sorry covid took away so much from you! I know personally some people who were sick and in a very serious condition for a long time, but your case sounds life-changing. However, I don't want to make assumptions about your life: I'd just like to say what a pleasure and how interesting reading your comment has been.
Wishing you the very best! And I hope to have future conversations with you in the LordanArts community

My brother had a similar episode during covid lockdown. He lived alone and I think the severe isolation and maybe a bit of depression contributed. He never had problems before or since. He got super paranoid for like a month, mostly about China and one day when my mom took him to lunch he noticed she was wearing Nike and he took off into the UT campus. We got him some help when we found him the next day. He was in a farmers field. Those lockdowns were really hard on people. Even the ones you wouldn’t suspect.

This is why mental health issues cannot be dealt with with “holistic” (or religious “solutions”). It’s not a solution to tell someone to “just relax” or to walk in the grass barefoot, and it’s not a solution to go to a general practitioner to get a temporary script for antidepressants, when it sounded like he needed to see a psychologist and get an actual diagnosis regarding the paranoia issues. Part of the reason so many people respond to mental health crises like his mother did is because we lack basic education about psychological health and the warning signs we really need to be teaching people to recognize. It should honestly be a part of everyday high school courses, if not earlier. It’s something that effects all of us and it’s getting out of control in America.

Aidan was in the perfect target age for development of a schizoid type disorder. A young adult male, enduring an especially stressful time. It’s very difficult to know if Aidan actually had reason to be paranoid, especially given his behaviour before the text message. I suspect there was no actual threat.
He perhaps may have been taking drugs/may have worsened his mental state.
But, I suspect that sadly he died as a result of his rapidly worsening mental state & the development of psychosis, leading to accidental death from exposure or ending his own life in the elements.
Antidepressants can increase risk of ending one’s life as a depressed person still has the same thoughts at first- but suddenly they develop motivation from the drugs.
I think Aidans case really tell us just how dismal even emergency mental healthcare availability in the U.S (and likewise in my own country).
It’s exceptionally difficult to find a body outdoors. Especially if the elements are particularly harsh.
It’s easy for us to try & feel that there’s a sense, a logic, to be found in the actions of someone in circumstances like this.
But- qw’re trying to understand and find logic in a severely & acutely mentally ill man person. Someone who is in literal psychosis.
This is very common for People In acute psychosis. They run; and they hide (e.g Elisa lam).
He’s likely hidden himself under some rocks, or wedged himself within some tree logs. They feel safe.
It’s clear that Aidan needed emergency mental health care far before this happened.
I’m so sorry to all who know & love Aidan. What his family is doing to help other young Aidans touched me deeply.
I still remember the day my brother drove his car off the highway at the same age in an attempt to end his life.
He only survived due to sheer dumb luck.
But it’s such a feeling of hopelessness. Once they’re an adult…everybody tells
You they’re an adult. As though that means something.
    My love to Aidans Mom.
Your sensitivity, empathy, wisdom, and keen insights are truly a public service to some of our most marginalised & endangered community members.
    Thank you, sincerely.

I’ve been noticing an uptick in these cases where young men (and to a lesser degree young women) go missing after experiencing a sudden episode of depression, anxiety and paranoia. Some are related to drug use, some happen when the person is traveling and in an unknown environment, and some, like Aiden’s case, are after a relatively long period of worsening psychiatric problems. But these cases all have things in common….the most obvious feature being an overwhelming sense that someone or something is after them. I’ve started compiling information in a database, has anyone else been doing this? I know other people have remarked on the strangeness of these cases and the uncanny similarities of certain features. I know this sounds vague, but if anyone is also wondering about these weird cases I would love to hear from you and to compare notes.
Also it seems like certain areas have a much higher incidence of unexplained disappearances, Nevada and eastern California being one of these areas. I’m not suggesting these are Missing 411-type events, for the record I don’t think it’s Bigfoot, aliens or time travelers, LOL. But I do acknowledge there is something very strange going on.
