    Very nice. To separate multiple seedlings that were started in the same pot, I find much less shock results if you immerse the whole plug in water and gently swish the soil and roots apart. Much more of the plant's roots are saved from being snapped off and the transplant will grow healthy.

    Hardening off is key. I just get a shelf greenhouse to do this. I got tired of moving the plants in and out of the house. I wrap the shelf unit in a shade cloth and this lets them sit and acclimate. So far so good. I did get minor burn on the top shelf because the cloth slipped down a bit.

    Gary I went to your blog and tried to purchase the 8 tomato setup your blog presented. Could not make it work but I scrolled down to the Brandywine 4 type colors and tried again to add the 8 part Nada So I went back down to the Brendywines and purchased another set. I Like the BW's because the root system is strong enough to graft a different taste Tomato like Golden's cherry or another. My GF likes to munch while we garden together. No Problems here Gary. Maybe next-time I'll get the Big Bunch you got ;-) Have a Great Day.

    I actually have 3 levels of shelves. One is for seed starting with close light. I move them down to other levels as they grow.
    The most important time for the intense light is at germination and for like 3 days following it. You want to stop the stem from growing and the plants getting leggy. Once they settle down you have more forgiveness for the light.

  • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
    @THERUSTEDGARDEN  11 лет назад

    I havent done that before but that would but transplant stress on the tomato. And root movement does. They probably are adjusting to that. I would recommend starting some in a seed mix cell now. If your seedling grow.... great. IF not you have had some new ones growing and dont lose any time.

    Watering is key. I have other videos for watering. Sometimes I omit stuff. I typically do bottom watering only. For some reason humidity domes and watering from above cause damping off diseases in my parts.

  • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
    @THERUSTEDGARDEN  11 лет назад

    My starting mix is different then the soil I use for transplants. My starting mix is standard seed starting mix like Jiffy. Its is basically perilite, vermiculite and peat moss.
    My potting mix is Miracle Gro garden soil this time around. Just a big bag. I use any liquid fertilizer that is on sale when I run out. I use 1/2 concentration for transplants.

  • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

    If you have tubes like I do, you can raise one side of the fixture. Keep your seedling to the left on the low side and move your taller plants to the right side where you raised one side.

    I water my cup transplants from the bottom and indoors fill the trays about every 2 or 3 days. If they go outside it is really a function of the weather and heat. Best way to look is to watch the top of the soil. When the tops are dried out, water.

    Well the do pretty good directly sown in the ground. Put in 3 or 4 seeds and thin to 1 or 2 plants.
    If you are going to use cups, I use 8-10 ounce cups and fill with my growing medium. Put seeds per cup about 1/2 inch down and water. If it is warm out they we sprout really fast 5-7 days if that.

  • @rmsine
    @rmsine 9 лет назад +2

    Gary, I watched a video from a guy named Praxus. He had 3 seedlings in the starting cell like you did, and he separated all three by putting the plug on a bowl of water, so the soil would wash away from each seedling's roots. It looked as if that way the roots wouldn't be damaged at all. Very clean and fast.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 лет назад

      Robert Sine He's good. It is a good way to do it. It is a lot less damage. But if you are careful, you can really minimize the damage and it doesnt effect the plant.
      This video is older. Recently I have just been sticking to two or three seeds per cell and I cut off the weekest and leave the strongest. No root issues at all. Just a straight transplant. It really depends on how much room you have to seed start and how many tomatoes you might want. When I made this video I was doing plants sales and needed 100's of plants. I retired from that.

    • @rmsine
      @rmsine 9 лет назад

    Hey you have a great video. Some generally points no where in the video did you mention about water. You do know that plants need to be watered or they will die. The method I use is the fill a seed tray with seed compost (widely available in the UK), water that using a watering can, then sow seeds and then add more compost , and then mist it using a spray bottle. I then cover the seed tray with a propagator lid, which increase the humidity and causes the seed to germinate.

    Gary-- I have a question-- Been starting seeds indoors for a few years now but this year I took the hint of getting the seedlings outside early to get used to the sun, during this process I notice my seedlings growing much slower than other year. Hmm. Sometimes they are sensitive to root damage. Did you have to split the plants? I have had that happen before. This year I only lost 1 out of 125. The year I lost them I had to 2-3 plants in the cell. I divided them when the soil mix was too dry and then I over watered them when I put them in cups. THEN I put them on the ground that was too cold. Those factors I think harmed my plants. Any of that come into play?
    Did you put them in the sun right after the transfer by chance?

  • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
    @THERUSTEDGARDEN  11 лет назад

    I would also seed start some more plants now. You wont lose that much time. But try 2 seeds per cell. And remove one plant if 2 come up. That makes moving them to cups a tad easier. This would just be for back up.

    do you have to transfer to cups? I plan on starting mine in the seed starters this weekend and that gives them 6 weeks until I will plant them outdoors. I'll start acclimation on week 5. is there any harm in just leaving them in the seed starters then planting them straight in the ground?

  • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
    @THERUSTEDGARDEN  11 лет назад

    I haven't. But I am pretty sure youd get 3 competing plants that dont grow as large. You would still get tomatoes but it would be a lot of green and growth and risk for disease. One pruned and managed tomato would probably yield you more. But if you decide to do it... I would love to know the outcome.

    Im out of compost but I amend the soil with peat moss and other stuff. I would amend it with compost too at the place the plants are going to fully grow.
    Compost is broken down organic matter that adds structure to the soil. Worms eat it. It has nutrients in it.
    Fertilizers are pure nutrients. Just chemicals that add nutrient to the planting area. They don't add to the structure of the soil.
    Yes compost is more what you put in your garden and turn into the ground. It prepares the bed.

    I bought a grow kit from target and it only came with 1 tiny pot and 15 seeds and grow medium that expanded into a cup full of dirt. They all sprouted and are the same size as your seedlings in this video only there are about 15 seedlings with their roots intertwind and tangled around each other as you mentioned. Is it safe to undo them or can I leave them as is? They are also starting to turn yellow and the leaves falling off. Please give me some advice if you can. Thanks.

Second, what's the difference between fertaliser and compost and can you replace one for the other? And is compost use only once?

      +Adalberto Dominguez Tomatoes really get big an compete with each other. I suggest 1 per container or planting hole. The more they are packed together the greater chances of diseases too.

    Tysm..for this video..wish, I had seen it before I did my seeds, for the first time, this winter..gosh..I know now, why mine are so leggy...my grow lights was too high above the plants..ok, so I have learned...lol. Now, how do I get them un- leggy. I do have the outside on covered deck..I am and have been setting them in sun. Some during day...I do water with miracle grow...( sm amt in water. Not full strength. )

    Once I took them from the cell pack and put them into larger cups they did fine for over a week, and then one by one started falling over so I tried adding some dirt around the base, but they broke at the base of the stem where it met the dirt. I now only have one plant left that seems like it is going to make it. Fingers crossed.
    I didn't have to divide any, I pre moistened my soil, and I have not planted them outside yet. They were still under my grow light?

    Thanks Gary, I do my tomato seedlings slightly different from you, but the outcome is the same. I am always looking for new easier ways to try things. You mentioned keeping the light only a couple inches away from the plants. I have tried this in the past, but the issue I have is my different varieties grow at different rates, so it's almost impossible to keep the light that close to all my plants. Do you use different lights for different varieties?

    when tomato plants get leggy then when you transplant bury the stem up the the foliage. This improves the plants overall root system and allows the stem to root. More roots usually = better harvest.

    I dont use a heating mat. If you know the temp doesnt stay at 70+ degrees, you should use one. If you are bottom watering the seedlings and you check on it once a day.... they really wont dry out. If you notice the top of the starting mix is dried then water from the bottom. The top dries first and it works its way down the mix. It would be hard to let them dry out if you check them 1x daily, even every other day.
    As they get larger... you might want to check them daily.

    thanks yeh I use it for peas but not for toms... I use 10% sand 60% potting soil and 30% peat I have only used it a few times but it works for all seed starting' transplanting' and even growing on its a firm mix so great for toms to stand up in but it has good drainage...try it if you want with one plant and tell me what you think. thanks :-)

    You cant deleggy them but you can do exactly what you are doing. Sun, fertilizer and time. They will get stockier. Just plant some of the legginess deep in the ground for the tomatoes.
