- As I was inspired to write this poem, it just "came out". I have reflected much on the lyrics and have recited it hundreds of times over the last 20 years to myself and for others (80% myself - lol), and the line that (intentionally) sums up the central idea: "The measure hidden in the meal" is comparing the obscure nature of the increase of the kingdom of God in the collective or universal sense, to our personal illumination by the Holy Spirit that is seen or perceived only by those whose eyes have been opened by God "through faith" and not by physical sight. For example, Paul, who wrote the majority of the New Testament was only a tentmaker or religious zealot to many, but to those who could "see" he was an apostle sent from God. Jesus said in Jn 8:12 "I Am the light of the world", and then in the gospel of Matthew "You are the light of the world..." 5:14 Paul said "Once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light." Eph 5:8 Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." Ephesians 5:11-14 All that to say, it stands to reason then, that our "brightness" in the Lord, if you will, is determined by the degree of our separation from the darkness and hatred of what is evil. To state it in a couple words; it's integrity and transparency.
"If we say that we have fellowship with Him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth." 1 John 1:6 So when we walk in the light with Him, we possess a light that can't be hidden. Though (obviously) this can't be measured quantitatively, practically speaking, this has to do with how we conduct ourselves in private and in the world. In 1 John 1:5 we find: "This is the message that we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all."
Paul described this defining condition it very clearly in 2 Corinthians 4:1-2 "Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we received mercy, we do no lose heart, but we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness or adulterating the word of God, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God."
So let's follow His example.
