As someone who’s anorexic and in recovery. I find it so horrible that some people will fake an eating disorder and glorify it because it’s not good. It’s a painful disorder where you feel yourself slipping away as you constantly pass out and personally before I was rushed to the hospital I couldn’t even stand. People need to stop treating anorexia as a badge of honor and start treating it as the painful disorder it is.

Then I get so upset about it that I stop eating for a few days to make up for the food I ate and will do a bunch of an exercises the rest of the day. The cycle is repetitive.. I have suffered with anorexia and there are all kinds of people that have anorexia. I myself am a recovered* anorexic man, so the idea that anorexic people can come in many different ways even. Even still, 10 years of an ED does not look like that. She even said she’s still eating. Seeing people claim that they have an ed like that is insane.

Honestly, as a person who was once very very big, I think she’s just getting her eating disorders mixed up. She might have bulimia but instead of binging and purging, she’s binging and starving herself. When you starve yourself, your body goes into a mode where it slows down your metabolism so when you binge, you gain an exorbitant amount of weight, then you starve yourself again but you don’t lose the weight because your body is holding on to it.

@Rob The gluttony itself may not be, but in many cases gluttony is a symptom of some kind of mental illness. Depression is the most common, unhappy people find comfort in a vice usually to cope. Some do drugs, so gamble (like I did), some overdose on cheesecake.
Either way the answer is not enabling these people, it should be correcting the behavior through treating the condition. Of course this woman doesn't want to be "cured" cause then her weight is just a product of her poor decisions, and at some level she probably knows this.

Person with ED and a clinical psych degree here. The huge joke about this is that she is just taking advantage of the ED communities' efforts to legitimize the cases of people who develop anorexia at a high weight so they can be diagnosed and treated before they are severely underweight. In these cases though, the people actually engage in prolonged starvation and experience drastic weight loss and malnutrition. Same can't be said for her. What Tess Holiday has is BED - intermittent starvation periods of a day, skipping meals and so on is actually VERY common in BED because people believe they can 'reverse' binges or try to prevent them by abstaining from food entirely, but it just reinforces the binging behavior.
The reason she wants to play delusional is because acknowledging BED as a disorder would completely delegitimize her entire career because it would show that actually, being this fat is not healthy and was the result of a mental illness, not because it is beautiful or comfortable or to be celebrated. But it would make her a hypocrite, so she chooses to lie her arse off and drag all of us through the fucking mud.

This is such a good comment, and it makes so much sense. There is no possible way a decade of true anorexia would allow her to remain at her weight. But BED definitely would. I've definitely struggled with disordered eating in the past. I was never under-weight because I would undereat/overexercise and then binge which would "undo" the undereating behaviors. I just think she is in denial. By calling it anorexia, she is ignoring the other half of her eating behaviors probably from shame or just full on denial because binging is a comfort behavior for a lot of people and can be addictive as you know. I think that can be a harder behavior to acknowledge in a lot of ways especially since binging is viewed very negatively and as a shameful behavior. Far more than not eating or eating very little, in my opinion, which is often praised. And I agree, if she came out and admitted to the world that she has BED and sought help for it, it would really really hurt her career. Especially when you see how people have turned on women like Adele and Rebel Wilson for losing weight and getting healthy. Her entire brand is based on being overweight. Getting healthy and learning to eat normally would inevitably cause her to lose weight which could really hurt her brand.

As a physically recovered anorexic, who still struggles with thoughts - I can understand someone being in a bigger body and still considered mentally ‘anorexic’. That being said at my lowest I was under 80lbs and know that the mental recovery always takes longer than the physical recovery - so still dealing with it internally.
It’s angering to the whole ED community - you cannot know the anorexic struggle while simultaneously maintaining a high BF %, simply because anorexia is a disease of the mind that doesn’t allow you to eat and thus shows physically through a malnourished body.
The way she represents it indicates it’s not something she genuinely struggled with, but rather is misappropriating it for attention and publicity.
We don’t just restrict and ‘eat a meal at night’. We restrict and celebrate being able to survive not eating that meal at night - and use it as a benchmark to even further restrict intake. We agonise over any bite of food. Compare two labels for hours in the grocery store before leaving with none because the thought of putting something in your mouth feels sick. I could go on - but the point being - she does not represent the anorexic struggle.

Thank you for saying this!!!! I struggled with atypical anorexia myself after struggling with binge eating. I engaged in the behaviors that people with anorexia do and would’ve been diagnosed with official anorexia if I had gotten to the point of being underweight (which I would’ve if I had already been at a healthy weight when I started) and I was TERRIFIED of gaining weight. I was disgusted when I looked in the mirror and it got to the point that I regularly went days without eating. When I did eat it was only little bites so people wouldn’t be suspicious and the thought of eating scared me so much I would get panic attacks. It is NOT the same thing as skipping a meal every now and again while actively parading obesity.

@@April-Marie_ from my knowledge of other peoples stories with disordered eating and my own past experiences with Bulimia and Anorexia…self loathing towards yourself and your body always seems to be such an integral part of EDs. She always seemed so proud of the way she looks and has gone out of her way to always speak positively about herself and her body. She has spent years showing her body off publicly and gaining attention for her physical looks. I realise that people have different experiences with disordered eating but her behaviour just doesn’t line up with everything I know of Anorexia (atypical or otherwise)
If she truly has been struggling with an ED then I hope she can heal and gain control but I genuinely worry that she is just using the name of Anorexia to garner clicks, headlines and attention

This is making me sooooo angry. You can't stop eating or not eat enough and stay the same weight, or you are lying to yourself and your therapist. I don't doubt that she has an eating disorder but I really don't think it's anorexia. She says she would eat what would be around her during the day and then eat at night. That's literally the OPPOSITE behavior of an anorexic person. My sister would eat her only meal in the morning (as early as possible so that she would have time to burn all of it before going to bed) and then eat vegetables only before dinner (she had to because otherwise she would faint in the morning). The dinner meal she's talking about just scream "I don't know what I'm talking about" to me. My sister was hospitalized for months and she made friends there who also were anorexic and most of them had the same "basic" / "classic" symptoms. It was actually fascinating how similar their anorexic behavior were even before meeting each others.

I started medicine for OCD but started working with an awesome therapist my dad found for me, I slowly got off the meds, & she taught me awesome skills to cope with my diagnosis. That lady saved me in more ways than one, I uncovered my weight was the only thing I had control over, as far as that OCD, mine was fearing fire..... I was always worried I would burn my dad's house down by leaving a straighten or the iron on. I learned through my sessions that fear of fire, was literally because of the trauma of losing my mom, and having to "lose" my home I shared with my mom. She literally had my dad buy me a camera, so every morning before school I could photograph my straightener, iron, stove, then when I got home my dad would watch while I deleted the previous days "off pictures". It was replacing one ritual with another, then one day I just stopped. I had to learn to trust myself.

While less common a person who is overweight or obese can still experience disordered eating behaviors such as anorexia and binge eating disorder at the same time even. So technically she does have anorexia too. But I know y’all wouldn’t ever agree on this even though you always preach about facts. Ok. So it’s definitely weird and hard to believe a fat person could be anorexic. But that’s not actually very uncommon. Regardless of weight, if someone loses a lot of weight, even if it’s not that noticeable (420 lbs to 390 lbs in 2/3 months for example) to most, little things can change everything. if they are eating less than their recommended calories, etc., it doesn’t matter if they’re 500 lbs., if they lose 40 lbs in just a few months, they’re technically anorexic. This can have horrible affects on the body.

I did an infographic for school about anorexia, and my older sister had/has anorexia. This woman DOES NOT HAVE ANOREXIA!!! Anorexia includes a deep fear of being overweight. Symptoms of anorexia also include yellowish dry skin, hair breakage, and a loss of menstruation all due to a lack of fat. Anorexia is also purposefully not eating so you will be skinny. My sister, at the peak of her anorexia, would only eat an apple and a few almonds each day and she lost her period. Anorexia is no joke, and this lady needs a new diagnosis.
