    When people say it looks like “cosplay,” what they mean is “it’s too crisp, clean, and polished to have been lived in, and it’s breaking my immersion as a result.” It has nothing to do with color saturation or accuracy.
    In other words, it looks like it was just bought brand new, freshly pressed, and never before worn. That only works when the character in-universe is, in fact, wearing a brand new freshly pressed garment. Otherwise, it screams “costume” instead of “clothes.”
    Clothes don’t need to be distressed, filthy, or faded to look lived-in. In fact, they can still look new, vibrant, and clean. But they shouldn’t look freshly pressed and starched-unless the scene calls for that.
    There is usually a process in costuming where the wardrobe is (for lack of a better term) “dismantled” to reflect how it would have been worn/lived-in, adding a sense of realism/believability to the world. To save on time, this step is sometimes skipped.
    There are moments in the show where the outfits actually look fantastic. This could be because the shots where the outfits look great where filmed later in production, so the actors had time to actually wear the costumes, and the costumers would have had time to make adjustments/improvements.
    Furthermore, the longer the costume is worn by an actor, the less stiff the fabric becomes, and the more natural the actor will move in the getup. The audience may not realize that a costume looks “off” due to an actor’s subtle movements, but our subconscious will likely pick up on it.
    Hope that explanation helps.

      No, the costumes in the new live action suck, not because they’re bright colored and accurate, but because they’re too clean and immaculate. That’s why it feels like plastic. None of the clothes or items have any history shown behind them, any damage. How have these guys been traveling, fighting, and their clothes are sooo clean all the time????? Zuko’s blue spirit mask has the same problem, it just looks so fake.
      The clothes in the original can look like that because it’s a cartoon, animation has to simplify character design so that it’s easier to animate. In live action it’s the opposite when it comes to costume design and props. Things have to look real and detailed, you have to think about the history of the item, the context it exists in and it’s connection to the characters. They did none of that in this new series.

    one of the MOST important parts of costuming is weathering, when i worked in the props side of costume shop and hell we would get a beautiful costume, gorgeous and what do we do??? we tear seams, bash with rocks, paint, sawdust- the costumes are beautiful but they don't look real, and for film it's very important because you see everything
    edit so yall can stop points i've addressed
    the costumes being colorfully and similar to the animation isn't the problem, it's the lack of weathering on them that makes them look like costumes which!!! for the reality of the characters in the show, THEY SHOULDN'T.
    I love color, i don't think everything in the world is grey and brown, I am not even against no weathering as a concept because it can make a piece of media feel campy and fun. But that's not what this remake is going for in its tone or lighting, writing. Not to pull a card but i've literally worked in this field and had to LEARN. ITS FINE IF YOU LIKE IT, IM NOT MAD AT YOU PERSONALLY FOR ENJOYING SOMETHING I FEEL from a somewhat professional stance is unfinished and is tied to the lack of respect and control us that workers backstage get now. I have bigger issues with this remake then the costumes, this is genuinely though the aspect i am educated to weigh in on. Dear God please look at this critically.

    You know what’s funny. One of my issues with GoT is that it removes a lot of the color from Martin’s world. Removing the Bolton’s crimson and pink coloring. Loras’s multi colored floral armor or Brienne’s blue armor. It feels like they were trying too hard to make it seem gritty when the material alone in the story does that. They also forget that Royalty and the aristocratic parts of medieval society liked color because it was a status symbol.

    • @allisonkrapf5605
      @allisonkrapf5605 6 месяцев назад +27

      Honestly the Bolton change works better. The change to the black from the pink could be explained as them changing the colors after they “stopped” skinning people alive. And makes the inner design stand out more then if it was crimson on pink.

      @apers1013 I think the Netflix Adaptation is pretty good. Like, a solid 7/10. Every character was casted great, and each actor put their all into it. The only massive issue with it was the writing, and by the end of the show it really wasn't worse than the worst of Korra, which is the better show between the originals in my opinion. Zuko and Iroh in particular are wonderful, and the 41st Division thing is really cool. Suki has a genuinely perfect casting, and Sokka's sexism is more internalized which is kinda cool but I wish it was brought out more. The visual effects are wonderful and Zhao's new characterization is fantastic.

    The problem with the cloths is that they look to clean and it especially shows with the bright colors of the air nomad costume.
    With how bright it is it really stands out how pristine it all is which makes it look artificial or like a cosplay since most cosplay doesn’t go for environmental design (cause they’re walking around a convention)
    It might also be specifically how the camera picks up the color since even showing LOTR as an example of color in fantasy there’s a distinct difference between that and this.

The next scene showing Mike got older, it is easy to tell he is still wearing the same cap because it has the same split open brim and stain spots on it, but the colors are faded and more worn-out. These features not only gave the cap an identity but also told us how much it meant to Mike. The split open brim shows it constantly got put on and took off by the same side of the hand, the stains indicate the cap had been worn at many places, and even as it looked old Mike still wouldn't replace it because this is what he cherished the most. The cap inspired Mike to pursue his dream job and is a great reminder to never give up his goal, like a lucky charm he wore the cap through thick and thin until it completely got destroyed, symbolizing he needs to move on.
      Since The Last Airbender is set in ancient times, and the Air Nomads use bisons as transportations while they are able to control air, their clothes should have some bison hair, dust, or maybe leaves stick on it, the fabric of their clothes should also look torn if they are constantly having wind surrounding them. Same goes to the Fire People. Since fire is their main weapon, their clothes should have some parts burnt or covered in soot. Clothes can only stay brand new as being used for display, but regular clothes can't, there has to have some marks left as time moves on, and if an animated movie can give a cap so much meaning just by how it looks, it makes the Netflix show seem empty by comparison.

They look fresh out of a costume shop because they show no sign of wear and tear that you’ll get from actually living in them. I noticed the seams of sokkas coat has shading along it but it looked sprayed on with air brush and unrealistic. Clothes are worn, stretched, they fray, bleach from the sun, stain and you sweat in them etc. it’s not about the colours, it’s the textures. Although the first movie aang robe doesn’t look like the animation, it looks realistic and it very well done

      The movie's costumes don't look weathered at all, though; they just look a little dingy because they used less saturated dyes and cool color grading. I guess the dingyness sort of resembles the white t-shirt turning gray with age look, but that's specifically the result of modern soap additives. Pre-1950s, light fabrics would yellow over time and realistic visible wear would look like visible repairs and alterations, ex patches, embroidery, and gussets and trim in slightly mismatched fabrics.

The show isn't terrible, but it isn't what was expected. You only need to look as far as the original showrunners leaving the production, the difference between the outstanding concept art from 5 years ago versus now, and the fact that most of the teams (most obviously hair and makeup, costuming for things like weathering clothes and puffing out things like furs to look better, likely writers given how often the dialogue feels like a draft version and likely actors as well) were pretty clearly forced to work under way too tight a schedule and had to cut corners.

      But they're not in the live action Netflix adaptation? They made it so young me and old men are left in the tribe enough that they've utilized the landscape to help keep the tribe alive..
      WHICH IS INSANELY BRILLIANT DETAILING. It makes sense for them to not looked starved because they're not.
      That and FPS I'm sick and tired of everything needing to look grimy or something. It's like people thinking Africa is only impoverished without looking at the striving economical cities it also has or that not every rural village looks devastated.

      @@almas4663so then you don’t want believable live action then. You want a mix of nostalgia and real people cosplaying to achieve that thrill for you. When kotara hits herself with water but is completely dry 2seconds later with no dampness or even wet hair you take me out of it. That’s not how water works. And your willingness to accept such a thing is fine but it comes at the price of realizing this show will never get technical awards. Costuming? Is trash and over polished especially in terms of the world building. It copies the original looks fantastically but lacks all functionality as real clothing these characters would wear. CGI? Is great overall but there are too many easily fixed spots of pure laziness where they drop the ball not thinking the audience will notice(ie the water and fire not having real world effects) dialogue? Absolutely abysmal, and lifted of a Cracker Jack box. It’s so lifeless and paper thin there’s nothing realistic in the manner most characters speak and carry themselves. It’s cosplay dialogue. It’s dialogue performed in a middle school play because the young actors don’t have the emotional chops for a play that’s well over 100 yrs old. It’s empathetic support that makes you clap when you’ve seen it performed by better equipped actors who did miles better. Aangs actor is alright but garbage. We want to coddle him because he’s a real kid and all that but the reality is that he can’t act good enough for a role like this. Those small details are important. Store bought cinnamon rolls are great but they’ll never be the same as Cinnabon brand fresh out the oven and their store. The live action is fine as a knockoff but no where near as good as the original anime. Nor is it great on its own merit as the only people watching it watched the original content. Everyone else has basically stopped watching already.

    Most asian clothing does have vibrant and stiff fabric despite how often you use it. The only example I can give is the barong and saya from the Philippines. In which the material used is a little thicker for modesty and also to avoid wrinkles after laundry

    • @pb7199
      @pb7199 5 месяцев назад +7

      this is an oversimplification, what is "most asian clothing"? what is "stiff" fabric? heavy silk brocade? cotton tulle? starched linen? costumes should be appropriate for the character wearing them. stiff pristine and brightly coloured clothing makes sense for characters who can afford those things, like kings, government officials and noble class people. travellers, villagers, people sleeping out in the open most nights, people who exercise and get into trouble everyday, fugitives and refugees would have clothes which have worn with time. common people wouldn't have access to vibrant dyes or use for stiff clothing when they have work to do.

The problem comes with the fact that the costumes do not have the wrinkles, the color is not worn out anywhere, there is no feeling to them. I don’t think we should get rid of the color or change the design, because over all it looks amazing, but I think that it would feel more like the clothes were actually worn on a regular basis if they added things like small frays or dirt tinge
    These clothes are being worn almost every day, especially in the case of the water tribes who don’t have constant access to new materials
    Just water doesn’t do much against time
    I don’t think they necessarily look like cosplayers, but it looks like everyone just got a brand new outfit straight from the dry cleaners

      Realistically they would still wash their clothes regularly. The movie is a condensed version of a story line that spans several months so it’s not like they just wake up and throw on the same clothes before each battle. They most likely would wash their clothes every few days or so
