If I remember correctly one of the reasons the US never fully went into the direct colonialism game was because of the absolutely awful experience we had fighting in the Philippine-American War. The tons of guerilla warfare, scorched earth, war crimes, etc. done to subdue the Philippines basically ruined the appeal for the whole empire thing. There was actually a pretty strong anti-war movement in the US during all of this, sort of a proto-Vietnam.
Yeah, the progressive movement in the US would never have allowed it. The only one I could think of being a possible US colony would be Liberia. And that is only if the US had activity tried to colonize it.

Is this not cause for concern over the ".io" top level domain name? It's the country code this territory, and with it changing hands to Mauritius, there's no country to take over this domain, and I believe non-country code TL domains must be more than 4 characters. Problem there is Mauritius has never had any territorial claim of the chagos islands.
They have had a claim on the archipelago since the 80s
@@therealiroquoisball they have never had a claim the Chagos Archipelago were uninhabited until the late 18th century, when the French established copra plantations using slave labour in 1793. The islands have been British territory since 1814 when they were ceded to Britain with Mauritius and the Seychelles at that time.
