#Gaming #RPGs
Open world rpg's? Trpg's? Arpg's? Crpg's? Could be my imagination but I think I'm seeing a pattern here. Truth be told, I hold all these in high to very high regard as well. Good vid.
I like to play a lot of genres:
- Narrative/Puzzle focused Adventure games (Disco Elysium, Deponia Series, …)
- Walking Simulators (Gone’s Home, Everybody’s Gone to the rapture, …)
- City/Park Builders (Cities Skylines, Jurassic Park Operations Genesis, …)
- Open World RPGs (Skyrim, Witcher Series, …)
- Simulators (Hunter Call of the Wild, Sims Series, …)
- Open World Games (GTA Series, AC Series, …)
- Arcade Racing Games (Pixar’s Cars [played that in my childhood a lot], Forza Horizon 4)
- Horror games (Outlast, Layers of Fear, …)
CRPGS, Grand Strategy Games, Tactical RPGs (I'm presuming you're dropping XCom in this category as well. At least in its Firaxis evolution), ARPGs, Turn-based Strategy games (especially since I'm dropping Football Manager in this group).
I'm happy to see you didn't even mention JRPG. I started playing games in my childhood in this category on SNES and PS1 (FF, Dragon Quest, Shin Megami Tensei, Breath of Fire, etc) and have fond memories of them, but when I discovered Fallout 1 and Baldur Gate 1 my gaming life changed. The JRPG genre is so silly today compared to other RPGs, like visual novels you don't have control of the plot mixed with combat.
Yeah, JRPGs are less about 'forging your role' and more about 'inhabiting a preset role', like being an actor in a play. There's a set script and gameplay hurdles between scenes to transition to the next one in the sequence. The plots can also get very silly very quickly.
I would recomend you to play Paradox grand strategies, especially Stellaris and Crusader Kings. I was genuinely shocked when I realized that they are actually role playing games that disguise themselves as 4x strategy games. And if CK is more obvious in that, Stellaris is an interesting twist when you realize that you are roleplaying an entire space-fantasy race.
Something about this list cracks me up.
RPGs with no gameplay, RPGS with too much gameplay, RPGs with no story, RPGs on a grid, and RPGs.
I mean, it makes sense, but when you lay it out like that it reminds of that monty python sketch where everything on the menu is just different preparations of rat.
You wouldn't know what a hard day's work is like with your fancy tungsten carbide drills!
I think for me my casual pleasure in gaming is open world RPGs. I enjoy the 'explore at your own pace' approach they take. I do enjoy a variety of tactical games as well, from XCOM to looser interpretations like Valkyria Chronicles. I don't play FPS games as often anymore, but I do have a lot of time in the Borderlands series. Someone in the comments reminded me that I enjoy 'spacer' titles as well, whether it's action oriented or presented as an RTS format like Sins of a Solar Empire. I suppose those titles scratch that same 'open world' itch, just on a stellar level.
in no particular order, some of my favorites
1. I love open world RPGs but I also haven't gotten too deep into many released in the last decade, because... yeah, they've gotten increasingly formulaic and casual, for lack of a better word, to the point most of them I wouldn't even call RPGs. Every Triple-A game has superficial and pointless 'RPG' elements tacked on. But Bethesda 'classics' like Morrowind and Oblivion got me through hard times and I find myself still going back to them, modded or vanilla. Kenshi was a recent love for me in this genre. It straddles the line between a whole buncha genres but if I were pressed I'd simply call it an open world RPG.
2. Life sims are also a favorite genre of mine, even if there's only ever been one flagship franchise for them and even if The Sims 4 is pretty much rubbish. 2 and 3 are timeless and I'm looking forward to whether Paralives is able to stir up the water enough for there to be competition and innovation in the genre again.
3. Traditional roguelikes. Varies greatly from game to game and how malicious their design philosophy is towards the player but examples like DCSS and Caves of Qud are some of my all time favorite games
4. CRPGs because duh
5. Immersive sims (Looking Glass, Arkane, etc.). Ultima Underworld still blows me away with how forward-thinking and playable it feels to this day, even lacking things as simple as mouselook.
...yes these could all variably be classified as RPGs, I'm sure that's gonna be a pattern for a lot of people
5. Narrative Games
4. Open-World RPGs
3. ARPGs
2. TRPGs
1. CRPGs
Same as you aha.
From your CRPG footage (real shocker here, I didn't see that one coming at the number one spot) I can see that Ember has been given a Ring of Pyromania.
And the fact that I can say that just by looking at the combat log means I play too much WotR.
My own list:
- RPG's (I like JRPG, CRPG, and TRPG's equally)
- 3rd Person Shooter
- Survival Horror
- Interactive Movies (Heavy Rain, Until Dawn, etc)
- Real Time Strategy
Honorable Mention:
- Grand Strategy
- Stealth (Tenchu)
My favorite genres are rpgs action, open world, turned based, crpg style American or Japanese I love it all. Although as I've gotten older I've definitely found the stuff with turn based combat has become more appealing. Right now though I'm playing Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard 2005 RTS action rpg hybrid.
Good show sir! Narrative games can be suck a lovely litte experience😁
Have you ever thought about showing off your characters builds for the rpgs you play? Could be a new aspect for your channel.
Yeah I post them here and there
While you tend to stay away from reviewing arpgs, I'd really appreciate your take on Grim Dawn, which is one of my personal favorites, even though I'm also more casual into it, in a way that basically beats the campaign once or twice just for the fun experience.
GD is an above average game, but not as good as everyone makes it to be. It's still mindless grinding at the end of the day, with a lot of number crunching, but it has more damage types and skills to choose from.
@@andreicristian9575but that is What arpgs are.
Finally, a list I can trust!
So your favorite game genre is RPG :D
Beat em ups
They're making a huge comeback.
Narrative games, hmmmm
I'll have to check them out.
Not sure you already have a vid on this but would you go over some of your fave games of each genre (besides crpgs which you do have a vid on). I'm curious especially on what some good TRPGs would be to check out.
the trick about open world rpgs is, that you have to make your own story. head canon and all and the game itself is merely a stage for your own story. than they're awesome
Man, #1 just came out of nowhere! ;) Commenting to feed the the Shadowy Cabal known as "The Algorithm."
5) Arpgs
4) Roguelike or lite Rpgs
3) RTS with or without pause
2) Team based FPS (specifically similar to tf2)
1) cRPG is king
I bet almost all here have cRPG as number 1.
Real time strategy and Interactive fiction, infocom etc
i have to say , your number 1 caught me by surprise :3
just out of curiosity (and because i just installed it again ) have you played the ARPG´s Sacred 1+2?
i am pretty much in the same boat as you, but more so mood dependent. like not always the patience for Disco Elysiums style of gameplay.
sometimes i need a nice top down/twin stick shootie boom boom ^^
anyways, keep up the good work
Not yet!
I've never heard you talk about Disco Elysium even though it fits into two of your favourite genres. What is the reason for that?
I have pretty much the same taste in games as you, and Disco Elysium has become my favourite game.
He mentioned this in an earlier video, the art style apparently gives him headaches.
@@ralph1125 ah. That's a shame. Can't blame him for not playing it though. I get bad motion sickness from FPS games so I don't play them at all.
In arpgm, what do you think of Path of Exil? It's a pretty solid game for the genre.
Otherwise , like many people say: Disco Elysium is a masterpiece that you should make a review !
PoE is basically the king of arpgs at the moment I'd say
Keep it up for us! No one does what you do.
Mortim, love the content and who know's if you'd see this: can you add a graphic indicator intro-ing the name of the game being shown? I always find myself digging the comments for the name when I see a cool new clip, even to the point i distract myself from hearing you say it
I usually post them in the description at least these days, this is over a year old
Rpgs
Jrpgs
Shooters (like Borderlands and DOOM)
Horror
Immersive Sims (if that's actually a genre) but stuff like Deus Ex, and Prey (preferably the one from Arkane that went under everyone's radar)
Honestly, for me it's probably Open Woirld RPG's in #1, CRPG's at #2, Tactical RPG's at #3, ARPG's at #4, and for some reason virtual card games like Gewnt, MtG or Hearthstone at #5, no idea why on that last one
My top 5 are:
1. What do you call the GTA type of games?
2. MOBA (Dota 2)
3. JRPG
4. CRPG
5. ARPG
I bought xcom2 collection and DOS2 last week to play on my iPad. So trpg and crpg is in my wheelhouse. Although I am not spectacularly good at them. What about grand strategy games like Imperator Rome or Crusader Kings 3 - this genre seems to be the natural evolution of passionate c/t-rpg players?
Love CK3 and Stellaris.
Curious about your thoughts on JRPG’s and if you have any favorites.
Curious if you have you looked at MMOs that are basically single player RPGs (at least that's how I play them)? Final Fantasy 14, Elder Scrolls Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Secret Worlds Legends come to mind...
Yeah I've played all of those
@@MortismalGaming Ah nice. "Final Fantasy 14 review after 100%" would take a long time, so you might want to skip that one :)
Add in 4x and building games and that is my list of the only things I play. :)
my top 5 favourite comments: all of them are free.
for me it's gotta be the Im Sim
Bit of a random Q but do you feel that Pathfinder WOTR will hold up on PS5? I know console ports can sometimes struggle and I’m looking forward to this so much - I just hate to think it’ll be clunky and hard to manoeuvre. Thanks.
I hope so at least, the launch got delayed today though
Do you have a discord Mortym or have you considered one?
So rpg is a spectrum then?
There are subgenres. CRPG, JRPG (in fact, in the old days, the only division used to be W(estern)RPG and JRPG), ActionRPG, Narrative RPG is not one I've heard used before. But I buy it. Tactical RPGs are often marketed as Turn-based Tactical games, and the RPG element stealthed in (XCom does this. And Expeditions was marketed as far more XCom-like than RPG like. But I'd say as close to Icewind Dale as it is XCom.)
@@shawngillogly6873 thanks for the clarification. I made the mistake and start to play old classics like baldurs gate or planescape to get into crpgs. They are clunky and uninviting for today‘s standards. I always recommend starting with newer titles like original sin or pillars. If you have fun playing those, you could go back to the old classics to see where it all started. But there’s actually no need, because this genre is alive and well today.
This days and age, RPG is simply what the devs sell as an RPG. In the past it cluld have recognezed because other genres rarely used stats and levels, but nowaday every game uses them.
According to my comprehension of role playing games they should meet some minimal criteria:
- You should be able to choose from different classes aka roles. This can be tank/warrior/slow but big damage dealer, thief/saboteur/debuffer/agile or fast but small damage dealer, archer/long range damage dealer, mage/elemental damage/buffer/long range debuffer/healer. Or a mix of any those.
If you only have one preset character, like for example Witcher 3, you should be able to make different builds that encompass the aforementioned roles. That means you get a limited set xp points, that forces you to choose a path of progression of the available skills or classes. To accomplish these progression set ups, there are stats, skills or abilities (Which are in most games nowadays and abuse the name rpg while not being actually one).
- You should be given choices to influence the world, whether that's the story or behaviour of npcs aka politics of npcs or factions. This gives meaning to the choose your own adventure, which means you can have different outcomes of the choices you make and thus giving the game replay value. There's also replayablity within the different class choices.
- While not necessarily exclusive to rpgs, you can have crafting, or a local economy, in place that allows you to create, or buy, weapons, armour, or abilities enhancers (Scumbag publishers abuse these thing by having a store that sell you these things for real money. Which means the game is designed to encourage real money spending, and therefore breaking the immersion of an imaginary fictional adventure world).
These are the basic requirements for a game to be called an rpg imo.
@@zensoredparagonbytes3985 sounds like a great blue print!
can someone tell me what the second game shown is?
Elex
@@MortismalGaming Thanks Mort! love the channel! youre the hardest working man in gaming pal!
What Genre is Monster Hunter do you think?
So you like roleplaying games, what are the other four? =P
I prefer to call them Western RPG vs Eastern RPGs. Computer RPG is a weird name 🤔
Did I hear "RPGs"?
What are the games shown in this video please?
5. Gamedec
4. ???
3. Diablo 2
2. Expeditions: Rome
1. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
@@mindyourlanguage2066 Yeah number 4 looks cool :D
@@richardjecooke8036 yeah hopefully someone can fill that gap for us, I'm really curious as well
@@mindyourlanguage2066 I think 4 is Elex...
@@XoRandomGuyoX yup! You're right, thanks random guy!
I commented that I found it through using Google Lens but my comment strangely disappeared after I posted it.
Looter shooters
ARPG
CRPG
JRPG
Shooters
CRPGs
Genres are kinda becoming useless if Diablo 2 and Dark Souls are in the came category(and DS is also open world) ... not to mention that crpg stand for Computer Role Playing Game ... so the name itself says nothing and u have to do a research what does it actually means ...
i also love crpg's i tend to play all types of rpg's i also love strategy games. there are a couple of fps games i like but i'm not into that genre much as a whole.
Whats the best narrative RPG with many choices, good story and where your choices matter. Preferrably where I can roleplay as good or bad in varying degrees. Something like KotoR in those regards. There are so many choices but what should I play? Is Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous a good one?
