Just because barbie was written by two good directors, that doesn't automatically make it a great script. It's the weakest part of the film, why is the majority of people think the story and theme development lacked... it's because of the script. Let's just be honest about it. 100% with you Austin

I disagree. While yes the monologue is cringe and its a little overstuffed; its sharp, funny, unpredictable and has a deeper message than just boy vs girl, but a philosophical look at what is living worth for and how the good and the bad is what life is worth living for. The direction while the crafts are fantastic and the tone is perfect visually its kinda generic. I wouldn't put her in my personal top 10 best Directed films of the year because there were so many well directed films.

the reason why the script for barbie is so applauded is because of how hard it is to adapt barbie into a film. barbie has a lot of negative connotations in our society and has been at the center of a lot of controversy, however barbie is also a beacon of inspiration for a lot of little girls. for that reason developing a barbie film through mattel while still honing in on the negatives is quite a feat and to make the story emotional and engaging makes it all the more impressive. it’s definitely a screen writing feat!

My ranking (I just need to see Zone of Interest):
    9. Maestro (Does a lot of things right, looks amazing, most of the performances are very good, but narratively jumbled and underwritten. It’s a perfect example of an Oscar Bait film)
    8. Anatomy of a Fall (A little too long, but really good court room drama)
    7. Killers of the Flower Moon (Similar to Anatomy of a Fall, I felt the length and wished it was from Mollie’s perspective, but it’s Scorsese. It’s still great, it’s basically country Goodfellas but more depressing)
    6. American Fiction (A smart, witty, and poignant satire with Jeffrey Wright’s best performance)
    5. Past Lives (One of A24’s best and a great story of the complications of love)
    4. Oppenheimer (The big favorite to win! I do think Nolan fell short in some areas, namely the female characters, but it’s by far his best movie in years. Expertly crafted and Cillian Murphy & RDJ crushed it)
    3. Barbie (Probably one of the highest on this. I get some of your criticisms with the script and I do think some elements could’ve been fleshed out more, like I wouldn’t nominate America Ferrara either, though no shade to her, but similar to something to what Lord and Miller did with The Lego Movie, I thought Gerwig was able to balance being absurd and silly with being smart and emotionally complex. Plus it’s funny as hell thanks to Ryan Gosling)
    2. The Holdovers (A new Christmas classic despite what Alexander Payne said and as much as I loved Murphy in Oppenheimer, I’m rooting for Paul Giamatti to win)
    1. Poor Things (The weirdest and horniest movie of the year, but also beautiful and hilarious, like if Tim Burton made a combo of Frankenstein and Barbie 😆. Emma Stone’s best role and Mark Ruffalo crushed it, my personal favorite Yorgos movie)

You lost me right from the start. My #1 film is Maestro. And Past Lives a Best Picture nomination? Is this a film about longing, regret, or an analysis of miscommunication? It's hard to tell as the delivery is so dry and flat. It has two of the least charismatic actors in it I've seen all year. Greta Lee and Teo Yoo are dull, inexpressive performers whose emotions are as flat as the untrained subjects of a documentary.

Seen them all. For me personally:
10 - Maestro (Oscar bait film. Did nothing for me)
9 - American Fiction (It was alright)
8 - Barbie (Fun watch, but too on the nose with its themes)
7 - Killers of the Flower Moon (Many boring scenes. Have never felt that with previous Scorsese films)
6 - The Holdovers (A true feel-good movie but not much else to it. Very predictable)
5 - Oppenheimer (Nolan at his best. Soundtrack was good but overused for me, and the film was longer than it needed to be)
4 - Anatomy of a Fall (Great performances and keeps you engaged)
3 - Past Lives (Very touching film. Gives you a lot to think about in your own relationships)
2 - The Zone of interest (Wildly well crafted, well shot, very well edited and amazing sound design)
1 - Poor Things (Some of the best filmmaking I've seen. Solid all around. That soundtrack though is awesome)

Any other year would have Poor Things as #1, but damn, Oppenheimer is so amazing it’s arguably the best film over the past several years.
FYI Poor Things received the second most nominations for the Oscars and BAFTA (11), and as a British film could squeeze out a surprise win for that
    awards body.

    9. Barbie (tone wasn't for me)
    8. American Fiction (really didn't like this one, the humor mostly works but the emotional moments didn't land and the satire wasn't as groundbreaking as it presented itself to be)
    7. Killers of the Flower Moon (I wish Gladstone's character had had a bigger presence)
    6. Oppenheimer (super entertaining with some unforgettable moments, but the grandiose tone did make me roll my eyes a couple times)
    5. Past Lives (lovely, tender)
    4. The Holdovers (instant christmas classic)
    3. Poor Things (this was an absolute blast in theaters)
    2. The Zone of Interest

    4. Past Lives - a really nice film. I liked it.
    5. Anatomy of a Fall - it was okay
    6. Killers of the Flower Moon - the running time really ruined it
    7. Barbie - This was not for me.
    8. Maestro - The stinker of the year. It was so boring. I wish other movies were nominated instead.

Usually agree with you, but disagree with a lot or your rankings this time. Probably an unpopular opinion but Oppenheimer is too long, a bit boring, not very rewatchable, and ultimately overrated, especially with that apple poisoning scene that felt very contrived. Also, lots of petty drama inserted between characters to keep the story going/interesting.
Still believe Poor Things is #1 but I haven't seen every movie. The biggest critique I've seen is the 3rd act is a little rush, but I believe it doesn't hurt the movie and should not have been drawn out like so many other movies nowadays.
Also, you rank Past Lives at #3. I haven't seen it, but you said it isn't the funniest or even very entertaining so I'm surprised you would rank it above so many other great movies. I'll have to watch it.
    Iron Claw deserved a nom.

The Holdovers was an excellent movie on its own. Bloody brilliant chemistry between the characters. This movie will live on. An Oscar is not required to glorify its excellence but it would be lovely to see it win something.
    Also, Oppenheimer. Boom!

  • @DrMetalpin

Barbie was still a bit of a disaster. It’s the kind of movie that comes out and gets a cult following, but it’s not really one that deserves special attention and awards. I understand what they were shooting for but it’s just not the greatest execution. Some parts of that movie just don’t work and frankly the directing, writing, and some of the acting were seemingly a bit mediocre. I would’ve nominated a movie like Nyad over it.

  • @ICRockets
    @ICRockets 7 месяцев назад

4:55 I actually thought one of the coolest parts of Barbie happened when they left Barbieland, and that's Ken's whole thing.
Having him get inspired to believe he can do more with his life because he sees all these men doing jobs he's been "raised" for lack of a better word to believe only Barbies are fit for is such a brilliant allegory for girls being inspired by seeing Barbie dolls that have those jobs that they were raised to believe only men are fit for that it honestly is THE thing that justifies making a movie like this. Especially when you consider that what came out of that was a shallow understanding of patriarchy, just like the corporatization of feminism can really only engender a shallow understanding of feminism, and that the conflict of the film is only resolved after everyone is able to understand each other on a deeper level, it's a truly brilliant and subversive meta-narrative for a blockbuster film.
That's also why I think the screenplay nomination makes sense, because that's the sort of thing that has to be consciously present from the jump and isn't just found in the direction.
