I love how Steven Universe is so open and accepting of lgbtq+, relationships, identities and feelings. I love how problems are solved with talking, not fighting. And most of all I love how Steven Universe can be used as examples for almost everything that has to do with people.

Speaking as someone who has briefly gone to therapy; this format does seem more approachable than normal therapy and Thomas does have a point when relating real life situations to a third party situation (ie a cartoon) makes it easier to process bc it takes the pressure off
Katherine Foote I completely agree I also have been through therapy for undisclosed reasons but it really does seem like this would help using a cartoon would really soften everything but still get the point across. plus help the patient relax more. But if the patient understands and has seen the show it would probably be better lol

Honestly though, Steven universe is really helpful. I just recently binged the whole show for the first time, and it was comforting to see characters on a kids show deal with real world problems that I can relate to. It helped me to process my emotions and cope with the stress of the past few months and years.

FUSION!
Another interesting fusion worth talking about is Sugilite, which is what happens when the participants in a relationship enable each other to the point of destruction of the self and others-she had to be defused and, well, de-fused rather forcibly and that isn't good for anyone involved. Compare Garnet's stubbornness and self-confidence with Amethyst's self-indulgence and disinhibition with Corbin's need for stability and Sloane's carefree nature and 'steamrolling' respectively. You can see that if Corne doesn't go into the path of interdependence and become Opal, they could go down the path of codependence and become Sugilite. There's always potential for a relationship to go good or to go bad-it's important to regularly stop and take a check to see how the relationship is going, to decide as a team what the necessary corrections are to obtain the most out of the relationship and to make those corrections in a controlled and consensual manner.

Same, the first relationship I was in were I felt like my true self and not still trying to figure it out, ended up being toxic, I love how the feeling of not being heard was touched on, sometimes a toxic relationship is just glossing over the other’s feelings and not giving them a say rather then anything physical. I sadly know exactly how it felt to be in a relationship where you don’t have a voice, I’m very affectionate and when I was in that relationship I wanted my partner to feel loved and payed attention to but I never got anything back from it, I was told I was too clingy even though I gave my partner space often and never got in their way, even when I made my parter feel heard if I ever tried to give my opinion I was always interrupted and was even told to ‘shut up’ the sad part was I forgave their behavior and made excuses saying ”oh we both have tendencies to interrupt, I’m sure it was my fault” when they acted toxic and ignored it. And when the relationship ended, I much like Lapis found myself missing them and almost tried to get back together. The real slap in the face is when I found out they were cheating on me after it ended (I had my suspicions when they stopped wanting to hang out and avoided my attempts to talk about our relationship and try fixing it)

Even before he said anything about having a therapist help him with the video I could immediately tell that he did. The whole treating the couple dynamic and not each person is and important part of couples therapy. Then, when Joan's character became the client, there was an explicit transition from couples therapy to individual therapy. Thomas did such an amazing job on this!

No problem, Thomas! I'm currently in the middle of my program to become a licensed therapist so I was doubly appreciative that I could enjoy the cartoon references AND enjoy how you were able to represent therapy (obviously it wouldn't make sense to make it exactly like therapy, but the important themes of therapy were all there and I loved it)
Honestly this video hit home to me. Even before Steven Universe was created my husband and I had been together for a while, we started to realise we weren't like other couples and many said we were odd. It was because we viewed each other as a singular person and experience. We eventually got called Rojay because of how in sync we were and how much we valued ourselves vs the typical theirs and mine mindset even when it came to money. When Steven Universe came out and we started watching it everyone I knew immediatly paralled us to Garnet saying I was the Saphire to his Ruby.

I really wish that Dr. Picani was my therapist. He just sounds so incredibly calming and one of the most understanding people. Thomas should really have an actual clinic.

If it was possible a fusion of 3 out of his 4 sides; Logan, Patton, and Roman. Roman because of how much he loves Disney, cartoons, and the voice impressions; Logan would be because of how smart he is; and Patton because of all the amazing jokes. I LOVED this video. It’s one of my favorites. And I’m TOTALLY Thomas Dory I don’t do anything a typical 14 year old does. I’m a BIG introvert lol.

I know this comment will get lost in the sea of the comment section... but this is comforting. My current relationship is definitely like Stevonnie. We’ve been together for 8 months, but it’s still new... in a way. We’re comfortable, but still learning. And... yeah this video is just really comforting.
Edit: as I continued to watch... I realized my first relationship... was a Malachite... I’m so glad I’m not in that relationship anymore.. I’m happier now, and have an amazing boyfriend.
My relationship is kinda like a mix of Stevonnie and Opal, now it's more of Opal, me and her are trying to work on ourselves before getting together again. Most of my other relationships were like Malachite too, me and the other person didn't love each other, we loved being loved

Malachite is like my old relationship. It was because the reason he dated me was to have proof that I liked him. So like a trick. My best friend joesef, every body thinks we like each other we dont but my brother called me sapphire and joesef ruby. I hated this and still do.
