@@tabithadickson36 I haven't. But I have read the short story Lamb To The Slaughter. (it's a story about murder but it's hilarious! Not scary at all!) But I'll definitely give your recommendation a read!
I'm wondering if people who read the books or saw the movies based off them (or both) as children were as surprised by the dark element in his books as people who didn't see or read any of his works until adulthood.
What I like about this film version vs the book, is that Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge do not die from getting run over by the peach and that they make their way to New York in the final act. While it logically doesn’t make sense how they got there, their arrival gives James a great opportunity to show his growth and character development. As he arrived all alone in a new city, he needed to confront his fears and move on from them. I love that he stood up to Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge. They did not show him love. The aunts got what they deserved.
I’d argue it’s an improvement over the non-existent Slugworth subplot from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”. Slugworth was non-relevant to the main plot of the Charlie book, but Aunts Sponge and Spiker in James and the Giant Peach are plot relevant, because they made James’ life miserable; so James telling off his horrible aunts, that are like the stepfamily from Cinderella, was more earned in the movie and it paid off.
So... my memory of the book is vague. (It has been close to 17 years since I've last read it, after all.) But I'm pretty sure the Rhino was just a real rhino that had escaped from the zoo, and in a freak accident during its rampage, James' parents were caught in the chaos. It didn't eat them. They were just victims of an accident
I have the book with me, and the exact line is, "Then, one day, James's mother and father went to London to do some shopping, and there a terrible thing happened. Both of them suddenly got eaten up (in full daylight, mind you, and on a crowded street) by an enormous angry rhinoceros which had escaped from the London Zoo." And it never gets mentioned again. I was always confused that a rhino would eat them, but writing it out now makes me think... James is 4 years old when this happens...What if it was a criminal escaping from jail? People refer to criminals in derogatory ways (he's an animal, an absolute beast) The zoo is a metaphor for jail and the "rhino" was an inmate making a break for it, and killed James's parents trying to flee the cops? Certainly it's hard enough to break it to a 4 year old their parents are gone, so I can't imagine too many people who go into exact detail about it...so maybe James began to overhear what happened to them without every fully knowing. "Can you believe it? That animal killed them!" "How did it get out from behind bars?" "He used a knife to take care of the guards, and then stampeded through the town!" But it could also just be an actual rhino escaped and the parents died in the chaos. Yours is probably much more plausible.
@@philiphamel8504 I think perhaps James (as you said he was just four years old at the time) was told his parents was killed by a actual rhino who had escaped from the zoo, but then in his mind he changed the word killed to ate because in a four year old mind its the same thing. Just my guess. :)

It would make more sense if they were from there.
Ooohohh VERY deep theory! I could see that being the most realistic version of the film. Also works that each of the bugs have a piece of New York that fits their personality
Hey, not many people take a look at this one! Love both the book and the movie! Has that charm of both Roald Dahl whimsy and Tim Burton style stop motion.
I saw this movie first time when I was about 10 or 11 yrs old, the "My Name is James" song made me cry. I'm not typically a very emotional person during movies but my dad had passed away a few years before and it just really got to me. I enjoyed the adventure and they use to play this movie alot on the Disney channel so I watched it quite a few times. I think it feels more nostalgic for those who've seen it as a kid and it's not quite the same watching as an adult for me. It's a real shame about the copyright issue as I really wanted to see your ParaNorman reaction (I love that movie) but I understand. It's very strange rules with youtube and they sometimes make no sense at all as some people will get their vids claimed while others don't, it seriously feels like a roll of the dice.
I have to admit I had a huge obsession for peaches after seeing this movie when I was a little girl 🤭 Fun fact : in France, the Centipede's joke about the skeletons is " What is skeletons' favorite game ? The answer is simple, it's ossicles. "
I read the book after I saw The film and it was a lot different than I expected. I watched this in theaters with my brother and sister and I was confused by the plot, but then I got excited by the stop motion animation effects!
@@nickreacts6394 I can’t remember all the difference between the movie and the book, but two major ones I can remember are that the aunts get killed by the peach when it starts rolling out to sea, and that one of the bugs from the book (The Silkworm) was entirely cut from the movie. Also, The Glowworm is a much more important character in the book, having way more lines and stuff. I guess they just wanted less characters to animate, which I totally get.
I always suspected that the animated segment of the plot was James's interpretation of him finally escaping his aunt's place. Given that he could only make friends with bugs coupled with the names he'd been called over the years, he probably collected bugs and made up names and features for them. Also things like the mechanical shark producing fish heads is like the aunts following him and the very slopey waves he drew earlier looks exactly like the animated waves.
I heard the audiobook and I completely forgot how everything went. The preview of this movie scared the living hell out of me as a kid, but as I got older I understood and got used to it.
When you spoke about your mother shutting off the movie because she thought it was too scary, my dad had that exact reaction about Jumanji. He fought the game of Jumanji was the Ouija board
There's no amount of new memories that could possibly cover up my horror from watching that mechanical shark, I had nightmares with it quite a few times

So the rhino was supposed to be a metaphor for his fears, something that scares him it only took the shape of a rhino because his aunt told him his parents were killed by a rhino. It’s heavily implied that the aunts killed his parents.
When you said "All your crimes are coming to light, aunts," that reminds me of lot of that phrase from the Dhar Mann episodes, "What happens in the dark always comes to light". And also an observation I would love to share with you is an observation that I've made for so many years about the scene when James's insect friends come to his age when Spiker and Sponge we're trying to kill him. That reminds me a lot of the climatic scene at the end of Home Alone 2 when Harry and Marv were getting ready to kill Kevin but then the pigeon lady came to Kevin's aide. I mean there's lots of relevance to it. Spiker and Sponge freaking out when the bugs arrive reminds me a lot of when Marv was freaking out when he saw the pigeons in the tree. And when they get tied up and spun around reminds me a lot of Harry and Marv panicking when the pigeon started to swarm them and when Marv screams hysterically. And then the police officer seeing proof that Spiker and Sponge were evil to James just like when the cops read the note that Harry and Marv wanted to kill Kevin. And then Spiker and Sponge get hauled off to jail just like Harry and Marv
I got this movie on VHS from my 5th birthday. I always enjoyed it. I never felt bad for Spiker and Sponge when they experienced retribution at the end. I was always disturbed by their cruelty to James. But I always remember being amused by the machinery shark. And I remember always singing and dancing along to That's The Life For Me
I remember watching this as a kid. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was pretty good. That narrator was something that I always remembered, like the sound of his voice is very specific.
It took me forever to realize his parents didn't really die from a rhino. It was a huge storm and his imagination made him think rhino cuz that's what the cloud looked like since they were cloud watching in the beginning
Great reaction as always! Even though I was a huge NBC fan as a kid, this didn't come across my radar until I was in my teens. Are you planning on checking out Midnight Mass? It's so wildly different and still so insanely good. Mike Flanagan really knocked it out of the park with that one.
I loved the book when I was a kid but if I remember right there weren't any skeletons. But there were cloud people making weather stuff and they attacked the peach after it messed up their stuff. Also, a rhino killed the parents but it didn't reappear in the clouds and what knocked the peach out of the sky was a plane or something...I remember the people saw the peach before it fell and thought it was a bomb.
I read the book some 40 years ago, I feel old! I used to love Roald Dahl books as a child and I read as many as I could. I even read Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator which is the lesser known sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Fingers crossed that your channel doesn't encounter any potential problems going forward. Thank you for the reaction.
Dahl was and is one of my favorite writers. The Great Glass Elevator needs a movie treatment. It was the dark in his stories that made them more relatable.
All books by Roald Dahl do have dark humour and elements (for instance, in one of his poems, where he parodies classic fairy tales, Little Red Riding Hood shoots the wolf from a pistol and then wears "a lovely furry wolfskin coat", but later adds a bag made of pig skin - guess where that came from...). And at first the giant fruit was to be a cherry, but a peach was chosen because it is "larger, juicier and splashes louder"
I know I own the book can’t remember if I’ve read it surely I did. I love Roald Dahl and have several of his books. I’m sure you know but he also wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, Matilda, The Witches. So much creativity to come out of one mind.
Sad to hear that we're not getting any more Laika reactions any time soon, but I completely understand, it's better to ensure your channel is safe They actually used Jack Skellington from Nightmare before Christmas as the pirate Captain, same puppet and heads (Fun fact, you can find two of Jack's heads in Coraline and Beetlejuice as well, in Coraline it's hidden in the yolk of an egg the Other Mother cracks open for Coraline's breakfast and in Beetlejuice it's at the tip of the tent that Beetlejuice wears as a hat in one scene)

Its a movie that means so much to me and i can not be more grateful to the people who react to it on you tube. The watch along videos on patreon are my favorite as well, where own your own copy and watch along with your you tuber of choice. I'm glad happy that you did, I hope it does not cause you any issues. Thank you.
I like that you went in detail about RUclips and some of what takes place. I don't understand what type of platform its turning into. Instead of striking the negative videos that are put out, they take down the positive ones if not the positive channels altogether.
Loved this movie as a kid. The characters alone and the fantastical visuals was enough for me. But then the songs were great too, and the story was sweet!
One strange detail is that rhinos are herbivores, meaning they don’t eat meat. I don’t know what the people at the zoo were feeding it for the rhino to eat James’s parents 🧐🙃
My theory is that the rhino was an escaped convict, and that James just misinterpreted what the people around him were saying. He was only 4 when this happened...can you imagine how hard it is to explain to someone that young that their parents are dead, and then you get the question of, "why?" I think that too many people around James just didn't know how to explain it to him, so he overheard them calling the escaped convict as, "an animal escaped from behind bars and had a knife." And James, being 4, turned that into a rhino.
According to the TV Trope in the What Could Have Been section Spiker and Sponge were both put in the New York Zoo as a live entertainment following their defeat at the hands James insect friends, constantly bickering and demanding their own cage with a sign reading "Unknown Species". Although it would have been interesting the scene didn't make the final cut due to time restraints and budget cuts, bit oh well🙄😏🙂😁
This was my favorite book as a kid. And I read it when it first came out (I’m ancient). I was worried the movie would ruin it, but I love the movie too
My mom HATED this movie. She didn't like how many deviations it took from the book (she was most vocal about replacing the Cloud People with the Skeleton Pirates). I got to read it the year after it came out. Fun fact: a coworker of mine actually got to "meet" Roald Dahl. He did a lecture at her elementary school, and the teachers told the kids not to talk to him at all because he apparently didn't like children.
Alright, before I watch this with you, I remember this movie giving me nightmares as a kid. I remember there being a spider lady and James, and a peach. And somehow nothing else other than it gave me nightmares. Time to figure out WHY it gave me nightmares! :D
With all the animated bugs in this thing and your accent, every time you say "Aunts" I keep thinking of Ants and then wonder "When were there ants in this movie?". Even up to your commentary at the end.

Please watch Multiplicity. It's my favorite comedy. Starring Micheal Keaton and it's the same director as groundhog day and Ghostbusters. Highly underrated
I remember loving this movie as a kid. I rewatched it pretty recently and...I honestly found it much more *boring* than I remembered.😳🍑 01:09 - 01:11 Are you kidding me?!?!"Coraline"came out in 2009,"James"came out in 1996!!! 21:17 - 21:23 It means lying.🤥
4:40 > 4:44 hahahaha 'excuse me?' was my exact reaction 🤣 Side note: now I have an excuse to ask you to watch Matilda again LOL... please react to Matilda! Or at least consider it.
I speculated that the aunts had something to do with the parents death, especially since their car has that hood ornament in front that makes it look like a rhino. Though it turns out the rhino was real after all so..well nevermind.

Fun fact : in the french version, the centipede's joke about the skeletons is " What is the skeletons' favorite game ? The answer is simple. That's the ossicles "
@@a.g.demada5263 yeah peaches are my favorite fruit
I used to love this movie when I was a kid. Haven’t seen it in forever.
I adore this movie. I loved seeing it on Disney Channel in the 90s
Corline is my favorite movie. I am able to relive it, only by watching people react to it. Its a movie that means so much to me and i can not be more grateful to the people who react to it on you tube. The watch along videos on patreon are my favorite as well, where own your own copy and watch along with your you tuber of choice. I feel it only encourages people to see it if they have not, or to buy it if they do not own it. So I can not see any downside to you tubers reacting to it. I'm glad happy that you did, I hope it does not cause you any issues. Thank you.
Other Roald Dahl books made into movies are ... The Witches, Matilda, Fantastic Mr.Fox. Revolting Ryhmes I think is also based off of R.D. too
I like that you went in detail about RUclips and some of what takes place. I don't understand what type of platform its turning into. Instead of striking the negative videos that are put out, they take down the positive ones if not the positive channels altogether.
Loved this movie as a kid. The characters alone and the fantastical visuals was enough for me. But then the songs were great too, and the story was sweet!
Great reaction Thor. ❤🇬🇧🇺🇸📽🎬
If anyone is wondering Gotham is in Jersey and metropolis is in Delaware
My twin sister and I watched this movie so much as a kid. We loved it so much! And now my son loves it too 🙂
One strange detail is that rhinos are herbivores, meaning they don’t eat meat.
Although it would have been interesting the scene didn't make the final cut due to time restraints and budget cuts, bit oh well🙄😏🙂😁
When I was a kid I loved this book ❤️
Thor "a long long time ago"
Welcome fellow boomer, i owned this on VHS and rewatched it allot.
- hears block buster "hello Grandpa."
Hahaha, love this!
"Gargoyles: the awakening" - please! 90s animated movie that continued as tv series.
The centipede was voiced by Richard Dreyfuss!
This was my favorite book as a kid. And I read it when it first came out (I’m ancient). I was worried the movie would ruin it, but I love the movie too
Ugh, I’m sorry. All the RUclips copyright systems are built to work against creators.
I actually watched this for the first time a few days ago lol. (Also first comment?)
Perfect timing on both fronts!
I used to love this movie when it came out !
I watched it so many times
It also made me so sad at the beginning
My mom HATED this movie. She didn't like how many deviations it took from the book (she was most vocal about replacing the Cloud People with the Skeleton Pirates). I got to read it the year after it came out.
Fun fact: a coworker of mine actually got to "meet" Roald Dahl. He did a lecture at her elementary school, and the teachers told the kids not to talk to him at all because he apparently didn't like children.
A beloved childrens author who hates children. Makes sense considering the things he puts them through
Alright, before I watch this with you, I remember this movie giving me nightmares as a kid. I remember there being a spider lady and James, and a peach. And somehow nothing else other than it gave me nightmares. Time to figure out WHY it gave me nightmares! :D
Loved this movie. My mom used to read the book to me before bed.
With all the animated bugs in this thing and your accent, every time you say "Aunts" I keep thinking of Ants and then wonder "When were there ants in this movie?". Even up to your commentary at the end.
I was talking about this movie three days ago and how I used to be scared of it lol
I've noticed a lot of my favorite comfort movies from my childhood are dark....
At least James avenged his parents
27:34😂
If only the police detained the crazy women
I read on Internet, normally they died after the peach rolled over the car
@@a.g.demada5263 I also read a Fanfic where they had been sentenced to an asylum.
@@GirlYouDontKnow-rx3lm ah ? That's probably for the best
ROALD DAHL IS AN MASTERFULL WRITER ...OMG HIS ADULT BOOKS ARE FANTASTIC ..
really did not remember when I watched this when i was a kid. I really love all creepy stop motion animation tim burton and hendry selick works... Laika Production movies are my jam and Coraline is my fav.
10:01 - It helps if you have a 35 year old novel by a legendary children's book author to start from.
Awesome reaction of my favorite Disney movie!!!!😊😊😊😊
I read this ! Like with my eyes and brain .. back in the day we used to do that shit 🤣
So James is wearing a school uniform, but does he even go to school? And if so, where is the truant officer?
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😁
I barely remember this movie I watched it so long ago, holy shit I thought this movie was like a fever dream
I have such a soft spot for this movie. I never actually read the book when I was younger. There's just something about how utterly nonsensical yet mundane everything in this movie is that appeals to me
It's not Kramer. It's the wonderful Peter Postlethwaite.
Did anyone else notice Mr grasshopper said the a word
the most ridiculous part of the rhino eating his parents story is the fact that rhinos are herbivorous lmao
Please watch Multiplicity. It's my favorite comedy. Starring Micheal Keaton and it's the same director as groundhog day and Ghostbusters. Highly underrated
I remember loving this movie as a kid. I rewatched it pretty recently and...I honestly found it much more *boring* than I remembered.😳🍑
01:09 - 01:11 Are you kidding me?!?!"Coraline"came out in 2009,"James"came out in 1996!!!
21:17 - 21:23 It means lying.🤥
i wasnt really into this movie but the spider is susan sarandon and i always love her.
I watched this in a theater when it came out. I set right in front.
4:40 > 4:44 hahahaha 'excuse me?' was my exact reaction 🤣
Side note: now I have an excuse to ask you to watch Matilda again LOL... please react to Matilda! Or at least consider it.
I loved this movie as a kid
I think the aunts *were* the final boss.
I speculated that the aunts had something to do with the parents death, especially since their car has that hood ornament in front that makes it look like a rhino. Though it turns out the rhino was real after all so..well nevermind.
I had this thought too because of the way they talk about the rhinocéros and James' nightmare
“He needs to find a fairy godmother or something to whisk him away”:me:😒
If this story were anywhere else but new York it wouldn't make any sense
You should check out the imitation of life!
When it comes to the possibility of losing the channel, just don't rely on youtube to keep your edited versions. Back up, back up, and back up anything you don't want to lose. Just in case. It is a shame to be sure that you run this risk.
6:32 Fish heads.
GREAT MOST EVIL DISNEY VILLAINS - IN JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACE (1996 ) FILM - REACTION : FIRST TIME WATCHING !!!!
