The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is one of Spielberg's finest films, and yet no one seems to talk about it.
In this video essay, I'm gonna give this movie it's due.

Is the best adventure movie and one of the best movies I've ever seen and I've watched a LOT
Totally agree, very entertaining video, but poor sound quality, need to learn how to use a good microphone. (And I just made it to the end of video, I subbed, too.)
I thought it was dreadful. One of the key attributes of Tintin was the art style. Well we can throw that out the window from the very beginning. A friend worked on the project and it was horrible. The clash of egos between Speilberg and Jackson meant constant redos and competing artistic direction. Add the magic woo-woo and it was a horrible hodge-podge. My kids couldn't even finish it they found it so boring.

I'm still heartbroken that they haven't done a sequel. It was clearly a part one kind of movie and we never got a part two. It's a disgrace.

Even to this day, the animations top a lot of the current CGI films. It's actually insane how realistic it looks yet retains that cartoony feel.
Totally agree with you. This, Rango and Spiderverse shows the true creative potential of CGI.

@@a.e_man78789definitely rango and tintin. Spiderverse is what started the trend of "style" over good animation. I guess some people like the comic feel to it and the choppy frames.
Whats funny about the Adventures of Tintin is that it's mostly nonstop action or suspense, there's no time to settle down and comprehend what you just saw, you're already neck deep into the next chase. But somehow, this continuous emotional exertion doesn't feel at all tiring.
Yes! Exactly. And like, honestly? The 1991 cartoon is the same way. I'm in the middle of a re-watch and even some of the moments that *could* have been emotionally taxing never left me exhausted.
I feel like it's because they can be split into high-stakes action and comedic action. The heavier parts with more grounded action are done to really hammer the plot and story in, while the more comedic parts are done in less intrisically plot-connected scenes so you categorize these as "the fun parts".
It's always seemed absolutely insane to me that this movie didn't get a sequel. Easily one of the best adventure movies of all time.

It’s a great film. Saw this on opening day in October 2011 and having grown up reading the comic strips, I went in with a grin on my face, and I came away with a grin. One of the most enjoyable cinema experiences of my life.

I never knew there were videogame adaptations for so many systems. I'm gonna have to check some of those out. Besides that there's several Tintin videogames released for the Snes that are pretty good but I don't think ever left Europe.
It is honestly amazing how well they translated the original character designs. They somehow look like real people and the original characters without falling into the uncanny valley. It is a blend of style and realism I never thought possible. And the lighting, the textures, the hair, this movie is a marvel to look at. I have never seen a animated movie that looks this good.

My thoughts exactly. When I heard the film was going to be motion-capture back in the day, I was so disappointed, because I was sure it would blow. I am glad to have been proven deeply, utterly wrong!
i'll be honest, when i saw tintin hold up that comic panel of himself, it just kind of fit. its like they took the implied details of the comics, and mmade them real in the character models.
haddock is my favorite character in the movie. the way he swings from washed up drunk to mad storyteller and back again is just so interesting to watch. he's like a train midwreck that somehow rights itself, but then tilts over the to the other side of the tracks.
Right?? Disney, you should be taking notes for your "live action" adaptations from this one. They managed to fall into the uncanny Valley soooo much and this one just did. Not.
It's crazy to think that this movie is 10 years old now but still looks amazing compared to the animation now.
One of my favorite interactions between characters ever was delivered so well between tintin and Haddock

The timing and way they play off each other here makes this line so funny to me
I'm Indonesian. Other than anime and manga, I grow up with Tintin, Asterix, Agatha Christie, and many literature. I love spending time in library.
idk why, but those titles, along with uncle scrooge (and sometimes, donald duck) comics, really felt adventurous. no fanservices (esp. tintin), no excessive slapsticks, just daring adventures along the way and it keeps going and _going._ i'd be thrilled to see contemporary comics/manga title with similar, if not same, zeitgeist
Hey, same with me too! Kids here who grew up reading comics mostly read mangas, while I grew up surrounded by Tintin, Uncle Scrooge/Donald Duck, Asterix and even the classic Spiderman strips on the papers

I am Indian and I grew up with Tintin and Asterix . My parents introduced me to this side of literature and I always had a book with me WHEREVER I went , and I mean it. At least until I hit 15 anyways. Too much school work
This and Rango were some of the best films Nickelodeon ever produced, we need more films like this

@@FilmEye both tintin and asterix where and still are quite big especially if you only watch standard TV and dont pay for things like sly I grew up with tintin and after seeing the movie when it came out completely forget it existed and tintin altogether for atleast 9 of those years
I'm Sri Lankan and TinTin was huge here in Sri Lanka. Glad people are talking more about this movie. TinTin has been a huge part of my childhood and it deserves way more attention than it gets.

tintin is still aired in sirasa tv , although they air just the old episodes all over again.
Same in India my dude, i was absolutely was and am inn love with this movie and how gorgeously they were able to capture the adventure rush and awe I had with reading tintin as a child. This IS my favourite Steven Spielberg movie, i just don't know how
Bruh, Tintin is very well known in Finland.
When the movie came out, everyone dropped their jaws when the Finnish actor for the movie sounded exactly like the original.

The original actor wasn't actually in this movie.
He was voices by Samuel Harjanne and he sounds exactly like Jarkko that I thought it was him.
Very well known in England too, I read all his stories in the library when I was a kid. I think he's probably well known across the entirety of western Europe.

As a german, that intro triggers me.... everyone in Germany knows "Tim und Struppi", I would propably say, Tin Tin is an european national treasure, not just of the francophone countries. But yeah, it's propably one of the best animation movies of all time, I really hope there will be a sequel some day...

Yes, really important to us here in Sweden, I’d say it was sacrosanct, even. Unfortunately, kids nowadays don’t recognize it as much, which is a real shame. I possessed all the colored comics (unfortunately not the absolute first content though), all the animated films, and watched this movie in theaters when it was released.
And as a brit I'd also say that Tintin is well known and much loved here, to the point that whenever someone gets a quiff (haircut), they'll get endless jokes about looking like Tintin. I loved watching the animated adventures as a kid, and had the complete boxset as well as all the comics, I was very happy when this movie came out especially as it was absolutely beautiful, we can but hope for a sequel
Absolutely! I grew up with Tintin, Asterix, Spirou, Lucky Luke and other comics in that tradition.
American comics on the other hand, wasn't really a thing in my circles. The Hulk was the only of the Avengers that I was familiar with before the recent movies, and from DC I only knew Batman and Superman - again from movies and TV. Never read any of those comics.

One of the things I loved about this movie was that the streets where Tintin lives actually feel as the streets of Brussels (where Tintin would supposedly live although it is never mentioned) . The architecture is spot on and the overall feeling is there. As a Belgian, I loved this movie and it is well in line with the universe Herge created.
Idk, the fact they managed to faithfully combine 2 honestly unrelated comics (Secret of the Unicorn, obviously, and Crab with the Golden Claws) and it still feels like an adaptation for both books and also not be overstuffed is surprising really.
Actually, it's a mix of THREE comics. Crab with the golden claws, showing the introduction of haddock, and both Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackam's treasure as a two parter of the same story. Amazing stuff

Yes exactly! My friend once borrowed my secrets of the unicorn book and he never returned it back! I had to buy another one to make my collection whole again! Can't thank my dad enough for introducing me to the comics and the animated series.

It's popular in Australia too. Every library has a set of the comics and you can pick them up new in a lot of bookstores too. They're standard fare

Growing up in Canada I never realized that Tintin and Asterix weren’t household names in NA since they were such massive hits in my dual languages schools growing up (English and French)
asterix and obelix enjoyer!! i always loved seeing those two comics in that little shelf in the library. the magic potion, roman-thwacking and boar-eating was a highlight of my childhood :')
Asterix und Oberlix, household names for no one except for me, for some odd reason, even though they played on repeat in the old kids channel.

What I loved the most was the amount of care this movie was made with. The character designs, they were more realistic, yes, but still somewhat cartoony, the music was amazing, everything felt alive, an adventure, the humor was spot on, the references to the old books, it was all great!

I thought the characters looked weird and wished they'd either stayed more true to the original, or gone full realistic live action... until I saw the movie. I think it only took something like five minutes into the movie for me to accept the look.

I was a little sus about the animation, though it looked pretty, the characters were a bit weird. And it was the same for me...didn't take much more than 5 mins and I was IN this movie. It just looks and feels so ....right. And the animation still holds up so well which is so hard to do these days. Really want a sequel!
As a French Canadian, I can add that the Tintin comics have always been immensely popular in Quebec as well.
Also very popular with many English Canadians. 27 years ago my new English boyfriend showed me his collection. We have been married for 25 years
Yeah I live in BC and I remember the 90's TinTin airing on Teletoon Retro. One of the few shows on that channel I tried to watch every single episode of!

They mixed a few different books together to make this movie. I find it amazing they managed to combine the stories so seamlessly.

the most realistic animated movie when i was a kid, grew up and realised that spielberg, peter jackson and edgar wright involved creating this movie. no wonder it's great
ik right, its like throwing all the best people together to make a movie. I never thought the spielberg World could Collide with the "Cornetto World"
I am a 53 year old Belgian born in Brussels and when I was a kid I used to be obsessed with Tintin. One the aspects of this most excellent movie I really appreciated was the care and efforts they've put into the set design. The way they've made the city have this particular Brussels feel is astonishing. In the documentary on the BlueRay they explain how the came here and took photographs of certain neighbourhoods in order to replicate them. A good example of that is the opening scene of flea market. That's clearly "The Marche au Puces". Anyway, job well done on your first video reaction.

This is the movie of my childhood, I remember first watching this work of art.
Haddock is supposed to be French Belgian so he should have a French accent as any other characters.
But if you transpose the characters into English, having a Scottish Haddock is nothing short of epic.

OP was saying that the scottish accent was pretty on point on the brash character, which is very true, even tho he'll always have the voice of Christian Pelissier (from the tv show) for me.
Haddock, unlike Tintin and the other characters, is definively french : he's from the city of Brest
In the Netherlands and Germany tintin is very wel known as well, not just in Belgium, France and Spain.
That and the same with Suriname.

Tintin was and still is really popular in India. We love Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock, Calculus and the detectives... I remember and treasure this movie from my childhood ❤️. Tintin and Asterix comics were a huge part of my childhood and I'm happy I grew up on comic books like this.

Actually, you need to add a lot of countries to that list. I grew up in Sweden and everyone there knows who Tintin is. My wife is German and she too read Tintin as a kid, so you might as well have said "Chances are, unless you're European..." Come to think of it, Tintin has been translated into 110 languages (yes, one hundred and ten), so perhaps what you really should have said is: "Chances are that if you are American, you're only vaguely familiar..."
I'll throw Australia's hat into the ring, it's quite popular here too. I remember my school's libraries having all the books.

I'm a New Zealander and Tintin is definitely known here, I read some of the comics before the movie came out and I know other people who've loved it their whole lives
I loved this movie so much when I was younger. I remember thinking how realistic it looked, it was definitely the most realistic animated movie I’d seen at the time. But I don’t think I ever considered that it was motion capture! It just looks so much better than other motion capture movies I’d seen that I didn’t even think it was a possibility!

I'm American and as a kid I was given this movie as a gift right when it came out and I absolutely loved it I played the Xbox game and I also read almost all of the books. It is an absolutely amazing series
They teased a sequel and so far nothing. I feel cheated. This movie deserved a sequel so MUCH.
Much like the first one, the sequel has been in development hell for a while, but it apparently still coming out
As long as Peter Jackson keeps on his documentary binge, we’ll probably never see it. Last I heard, Anthony Horowitz was set to pen the screenplay.

I love animation of any kind, including computer animation, and I usually admire atypical design and string style, but This hot mess was firmly in the same stinky basket as the likes of Mars Needs Moms. The occasionally janky animation, generally hideous characters, contrived plot - no, it was just generally dreadful, and I had to commit to watching to the bitter end.
@@vercoda9997 read the comics, then you'll see why the movie is the way it is. It's the way we all imagine the scenes in the comics to play out
My friend has been telling me about this movie but all she gets is “we’ve watched it together 3 times, stop.” 😕
@@vercoda9997 i get how the style might not be to your tastes but objectively the animation is amazing and the scenes are gripping. I wouldn’t watch it a 4th time but all the 3 times I did watch it were great. It makes me wonder if we watched the same movie.
As a child fan of Tintin, I was apprehensive about this film ruining everything I had built up in my mind over all of the books .. but it kept close to the books and I was pleasantly suprised how good and faithful it was
This was animated?! Damn! This must have been good graphics at the time, I remember seeing this many years ago as a child. Before seeing this video I could have bet money on it being recorded with real people in front of the camera.
The fact that Milou is named Snowy and Dupont & Dupont are named Thompson & Thompson triggers me so much as a french x) (I have the whole BD collection btw)
Don't forget Professor Tournesol (sorry if miswrote) being called Calculus.
In spanish Milou was Milu, which sounds the same way, but the fun duo were called Hernández and Fernández which is very very different
And Tournesol in Spanish is Tornasol, which is a direct translation (though the plant is called "girasol" in Spanish)
In Swedish it is the same as in French
@@nutbits Well, in Spanish it was Hernández y Fernández, two extremely common surnames. Not only they sound very similar, but their origin is the same, as the f was sometimes changed into h with the evolution of the language. You could say that both surnames are the samd
I grew up with tintin in Finland and this movie is just quite a masterpiece, I still rewatch it multiple times almost 15 year later

I'm Brazilian, I grew up watching the cartoon (the 90's series) on TV as it was available here in Brazil and I always loved it. I was very stoked when they announced this movie and I went to watch it with my father when it was released and we adored every minute of it!

The best part about this movie is how it’s pretty much a plot twist for the Tintin fans, you expect that it would have followed the formula of the comics but from the moment Tintin gets knocked out it completely abandons that expectation while still being faithful to the feel and works that built the franchise while giving the best of what adventure movies have to offer, it’s brilliant!
I am from the U.S and I have read this series ever since I was a little kid. It’s so cool to see the history and background behind my favorite book series.
I read every Tintin comic and watched every cartoon growing up in the 90s. This movie captured the essence of these stories so well.
as someone who didn't grow up with tintin, I LOVED this movie. one of my favourite ways to keep enjoying something that I've seen, but don't have the energy yet to rewatch, is by finding analysis of them and this one is a total treasure. Thank you :)

i watched a spanish version of an animated asterix film and thats all i now about it
I loved Tintin (2011) when I was younger. The music, the style, the story. It was great. I still do love it.
ASTERIX, TINTIN, The SMURFS & HEAVY METAL were also BIG in Australia and New Zealand (as an extension of English & European culture).
'Belgian, French, Spanish'... add millions of Bengali in that list.

When the plane stops and he burps into the engine to get it going again...that alone makes this a cinematic masterpiece in my eyes.

I’ve always found it so impressive how the script somehow incorporates not just the plot of Secret of the Unicorn, but has so many parts from the other Tintin comics, and blends them together masterfully. Almost every single book or comic or game adaptation can learn from this film. Actually, can we just make it an international law that every adaptation has to be made by Peter Jackson, at least partially?
Thank you for this! Tintin deserved a new lease of life in the modern world, but it was such a shame this heartfelt effort went under the radar. No other animation captures the style and substance of the books so well, while simultaneously modernising the content without being condescending.

My Mexican dad took me to see the 2011 movie when It’s came out in theaters. He grew up on the comics so it meant a lot to him.
Tintin was always a big phenomenon in Québec because the province is French-speaking so it wasn't totally absent in North America.
I live in Egypt and Tintin was one of my fave animated shows as a kid so when that movie came out I was in love
I am from India, this is by far my favorite comics ever from my childhood, it is reasonably famous here, I use to read the books in their Bengali version (my native language) of it.... Absolutely loved it

My dad is from afirca Kenya, he tild me that he read those books when he was a kid, and was ecstatic when he saw it was comi to the big screen, whole fsmily smiled and laughed through it all.

The story about Spielberg meeting Herge was that they were meant to meet in Paris but the night before Herge died from Leukaemia and he put in his will that Spielberg will be able to make any Tintin based films for the next 50 years or something like that. Fanny (Herge's wife), met him instead in Paris and it became quite a depressing conversation. Sad story really. Possibly the two greatest creative minds in media of all time never met face to face. But what a conversation that would have been - only the gods know now…

I don't know how, but they nailed the motion capture.
My main gripe with the movie was That it felt a bit too action packed, I felt like I didn’t have time to breath or relax. As soon as they escape danger danger immediately finds them again, I found it quite exhausting.
This. It's technically well done but it packs stuff from so many different stories it goes all over the place, and this weakens everything... I'm happy for Film Eye's passion, but I have to admit the movie didn't really work for me, it's an interesting experiment, but not a masterpiece.
That's how I felt reading the Tintin and the Soviets comic book. Pacing is too fast
I love this movie so much. Even though it doesn't follow the original comics perfectly, it's still true to the fun, silly and exiting spirit of them. I'm so happy that you defended Thomson and Thompson being included in the film - it just wouldn't be the same without them. This was by far the best presentation I've ever seen on this movie; I think it really helps that you were a fan of the comics beforehand. Well done! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to go rewatch a certain movie for the 8th time...

As a canadian the biggest part of my childhood was reading these books in my school library, back when we used it for reading. I also watched the animated series on what I remember being a retro cartoon network and loved it, good times.

Plus the film is totally respectful of the Belgian/Brussels atmosphere of the original comic books, up to incredible details and integrating details of actual places in Brussels. As a Brussels guy coming from a family where Tintin was almost a Religion... It was really amazing to see it on the big screen when they released it. ❤ They totally got the spirit of it but expended it to a really fun-to-watch film. Go. Watch it. Enjoy.

Hello, I am a Canadian. Tintin is very popular here with francophones. My city has a large enough french speaking population that I grew up reading both english and french translations of the comics. It is not exclusive to Europe :)
You missed one point.... the visual conversion from comic book characters to animated characters with lifelike features and skin, but still in the style of Herge was outstanding

This film not only is criminally underrated, but, as a long time fan of the comics, i can safely say it's one of the best book-to-film adaptations i've seen.
Tintin was pretty popular too in Southeast Asia. My dad has all of the books, and I've read a few. Oh . . and they changed the dog's name from Snowy to Milo.

Literally everything about this movie is epic and groundbreaking - as you have wonderfully put together. Personally, I think, the most impressive aspect of this whole masterpiece is, how well the entire source material has been translated into film. You can feel the respect, the insane degree of passion, and the deep love for details in every single shot. How even the teeniest piece of prop has a meaning. This movie is ahead of its time, it's unmatched, it should be a huge piece of movie history - and it's a crying shame, that the planned sequel never happened.
