- This is my video essay reviewing the icon that is Tintin and his adventures put to television by French animation studio Ellipse Programme and Canadian studio Nelvana Limited.
Unlike other shows and films that have a terrible book-to-screen adaption, the cartoon series of Tintin manages to faithfully adapt the original spirit of the comicbooks while also building upon it with all those elements that video and audio can do compared to a written format.
It’s the one show that does justice to Hergé’s beloved creation and it needs to be learned from.

What is Tintin?
The Adventures of Tintin is an animated television series co-produced, written, and animated by French animation studio Ellipse Programme and Canadian studio Nelvana Limited. The series is based on the comic book series of the same name by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. 39 half-hour episodes were produced over the course of three seasons, which originally aired from 1991 to 1992 in France, Canada, and the United States.
The television series was directed by French director Stéphane Bernasconi, with Peter Hudecki as the Canadian unit director. Hudecki was the primary director but could not be credited as such due to co-production restrictions. It was produced by Ellipse (France) and Nelvana (Canada) on behalf of the Hergé Foundation. It was the second television adaptation of Hergé's books, following the Belgian animation company Belvision's Hergé's Adventures of Tintin. The series' writers included Toby Mullally, Eric Rondeaux, Martin Brossolet, Amelie Aubert, Dennise Fordham, and Alex Boon.
The series used traditional animation techniques and adheres closely to the original books, going so far as to transpose some frames from the original books directly to the screen. In the episodes "Destination Moon" and "Explorers on the Moon," 3D animation was used for the moon rocket-an unusual step in 1989. Each frame of the animation was then printed and recopied onto celluloid, hand painted in gouache, and then laid onto a painted background.
Artistically, the series chose a constant style, unlike in the books. In the books, the images had been drawn over the course of 47 years, during which Hergé's style developed considerably. However, later televised episodes, such as the "Moon" stories and "Tintin in America", clearly demonstrate the artists' development throughout the production of the television series. The series' original production language was English, but all visuals (road signs, posters, and settings) remained in French.
The underscore music and the main title theme for the series were written by Ray Parker and Tom Szczesniak, and recorded by engineer James Morgan. Excerpts from the score were released by Lé Studio Ellipse on CD and cassette in conjunction with Universal Music Group on the StudioCanal label. It is now out of print in both formats.
The Adventures of Tintin is a series of 24 bande dessinée albums created by Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi, who wrote under the pen name Hergé. The series was one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century. By 2007, a century after Hergé's birth in 1907, Tintin had been published in more than 70 languages with sales of more than 200 million copies, and had been adapted for radio, television, theatre and film.
The series first appeared in French on 10 January 1929, in Le Petit Vingtième (The Little Twentieth), a youth supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtième Siècle (The Twentieth Century). The success of the series led to serialised strips published in Belgium's leading newspaper Le Soir (The Evening) and spun into a successful Tintin magazine. In 1950, Hergé created Studios Hergé, which produced the canonical versions of 11 Tintin albums.
The series is set during a largely realistic 20th century. Its hero is Tintin, a courageous young Belgian reporter and adventurer aided by his faithful dog Snowy (Milou in the original French edition). Other allies include the brash and cynical Captain Haddock, the intelligent but hearing-impaired Professor Calculus, incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson and the opera diva Bianca Castafiore.

same here to me. i watch as kid every day on Belgium tv channels or sometimes on Dutch tv channels.
Still the best adaptation of the comic. Somehow the voice of Tintin matched the one in my head. Still put these shows on from time to time in the background.
The books and series were a huge part of my childhood. Every time I got sick, my dad would buy me a Tintin book. I remember getting both of the "Moon" books, a bottle of Lucozade and a load of peanut brittle when I had chickenpox. Being ill as a kid was great.

@@motioninart famous novelist Anthony Horowitz was supposed to be one of the writers. He has a book series where a fictionalized version of him is a supporting character, and there's a scene where he's discussing adapting that train scene from the 90s cartoon's intro!

I have never forgotten about The Animated Series, I have always been rewatching Tintin Animated Series including The Lake Of Shark movie and I have all the comics by Hergé.

My first interaction with Tintin was the film in 2011. It became an instant favourite. About a year later I read a couple of the books. Then I found the cartoon on Netflix and I would always watch it when I was bored until it was sadly removed. Great memories. Thank you for talking about the cartoon. Brilliant video.

My mom brought home Tintin and the Black Island and I was close minded to even give it a chance because I prefered to play video games. But after I watched it the first time I wanted to collect all the other episoded.

No I will never forget Tin Tin...well yes I forgot the 90s episodes. But that awesome orchestra was always with me. And the charming animation for them.
I managed to rewatch the entirety of the 90s Tin Tin adaptation cartoon during 2020 and rewatched the amazing animated film adaptation. It was a great way to pass the time.
I loved Tintin's adventures since childhood. I still love them. It was a joy watching his evolution and the friends he made along the way who became part of his adventures.

Great video essay! Can certainly relate to the way you feel about it. The Nelvana 'Adventures of Tintin' animated series from the early 90's, is arguably my personal favourite animated series of all time. I adore the comics by Herge and I think this series definitely did it justice. Well done!

My cousins had a tradition of buying one Tinitin book per year while growing up. This is probably one of the few comics I've read thoroughly as a child.
I can still read them today and enjoy it
I got to know this cartoon series by accident (since the DVD I wanted to buy wasn't actually the one placed in the bag). But it was such a great and wonderful accident, now I'm into detective games and shows, all thanks to this. I wish they'll have a continuation of the series or maybe a remake.

@@motioninart it’s such an iconic comic/ cartoon series! i did have a favourite but i can’t remember if it was the Comic or the Cartoon with this one but Flight 714 to Sydney (for obvious reasons) was one of my favourites and i think it’s call the Red sea sharks. , Destination to the Moon also are a couple of my favourites. ✌🏼
I love this show so much, I watched it so much as a kid and read almost every single book. My mom tried to get me into Tintin with the books, but when we watched the movie in theatres I really fell in love with the series! I dressed up as Tintin for Halloween too! I had a stuffed animal Snowy and everything!

I adore this series and you did a great job explaining it. In terms of the voice acting, I was kind of weirded out by the English voice acting, as I was accustomed on the greek voice acting. Captain Haddock had a very rough, rural voice that sounded exactly how almost every old sailor I've ever met sounded like. But still I can agree that the way they present the characters is superb and makes it faithful to how we imagined it whilst reading the comics
I liked Tintin when I was younger, and even though I’m a little older now, I love it even more. It got me into the series and made me a Tintin fan. One of my favorite television shows and comic series.

I was born 2004 but i have been a great fan of tintin since i was a child and i loved the tv show i still have the cd i love that more people are finally getting the television series the attention it deserves. I also loved the film very much.
It’s pronounced Air-jay. Tintin was probably just too different for the Anglophone world. In the francoph-sphere it’s not forgotten at all, as most of us also read the comics 😊

In Denmark we have a store chain called Faroes Cigar, and the logo is a buff Tintin, smoking while driving a motorcycle. It's a comic book store, that is getting bigger and bigger all the time. It is one of may favorite shops of all time, and now they sell everything from Tintin, Batman, Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings and much more. A ture nerd heaven.
I went to school with the daughter of the man that owns the stores, and she told me the reason it's Tintin on the logo, is because her father first started selling comic books in the school yard - specifically Tintin comics. Therefore it just made sense.
This was my childhood and even till this date I read the books and watch them. My most fav was Flight 714 and the whole Red Rackham treasure arc

I agree 11o0 percent! I like the animated series much more than even the Spielberg version, which I thought tried TOO hard to impress in the action scenes, and too many little bits of clever "business" that made it feel over-thought. The voices and music in the animated series indeed are excellent and super appropriate! AND they are so well performed! But my favorite of all is how they handled Snowy, interests of his visual charm, and he perfectly-chosen "voice". Thanks for the video. Glad to see the series getting loving attention.!
As a French with belgian origins this is my favorite cartoon (I still watch it to this day)
ARE YOU KIDDING?! I grew up on these cartoons! We still have them all on DVD and watch them on those discs. It was a thing me and my dad did and still do as a father daughter activity since i was only like two years old. Believe it or not it was my second favourite cartoon as a kid despite it being rather not kid friendly lol.
To me this is what Tintin will always be. I knew of the comics (my favourite as a 5 yo was the super racist one lol) and watched the movie when it came out but it's super sad to see these pieces of art, these cartoons be overshadowed so massively by the movie. i swear the tomb scene from the pharaos cigars (direct translation from my language idk what it is in english) as well as all of Seven crystal balls will forever haunt my nightmares and i love them for that, even if i still refuse to watch those particular two as a 22 year old.
This is what i want modern adult animation to be. No sex jokes, no stoner jokes etc, just real adult stories with the occational gun or a drug related story thrown in. I swear this series sparked my interest in nearly anything i research online like true crime, cryptozooology etc. Thank you Tintin, for just, existing.

Tintin along with Scooby-Doo were my favorite cartoons as a kid, and as for movies I always did love Indiana Jones even if I couldn't understand English too well as a child. Growing up in the 2000s with access to the golden era of media is easily one of the better childhoods one could have.

This is very good. However there was an earlier Hergies Adventures of Tintin animation series. Was admittedly more camp and simplistic. (I'm really quite old) I have a deep affection for the films discussed here. Whilst Tintins Canadian accent amused but was accepted with the historical French/Canadian vibe. ❤

TinTin is popular in Iran and I think most people became a fan through this show. This show was even dubbed with some memorable voices in Iran. Personally I have a lot of memory with this show and I have loved TinTin since childhood, both because of this show and the comics.
P.S. All comics of TinTin have also been translated and distributed in Iran as well, from Soviets to Alph Art

This was such an incredible cartoon, just amazing. Surprisingly, the North American dub was flawless and everything felt extremely natural. They captured the style of the books perfectly, and really knew how to make a timeless show.

@@motioninart Well believe it or not, one of my favorites was actually one that was recently adapted into a game, Cigars of the Pharaoh.
The game has had some... technical issues, shall we say. But the episodes were good (most of Tintin's adventures were done in two parts in the cartoon). And of course Thomson and Thompson were hilarious in it, thinking that Tintin was part of the ring for most of the story (which happens surprisingly often in the show).

In the late 1950's the Belvision animation company created a series of Tintin cartoons. If you type in 'Herges Adventures of Tintin The Star of Mystery . Full Cartoon' into youtube you'll find their version of 'The Shooting Star'. Also look for 'Herge's adventures of Tintin' on Wikipedia for more information. I remember them being serialized on kids TV when I was a kid in the 70's. @@motioninart
Hi! Back in the late 1950's the Belvision company created some Tintin cartoon adaptations that were then serialised in 5 minute episodes on TV. Thank you for talking about Tintin, and in particular, the underrated Ellipse/Nelvana adaptation of the books.
I really love these animated episodes, but I think they were better suited for the more intense/serious adventures, rather than the low-key, comedic ones. For instance, I think the Ellipse/Nelvana adaptation of "Cigars of the Pharaoh" works far better than the actual book, in terms of pacing and focusing on the action elements. But then again the comedy which partly made the character interactions between Haddock and the Thompsons or Calculus, is almost entirely lost in the Ellipse adaptation of books like "Red Rackham's Treasure" or "Castafiore's Emerald". The jokes, and the delivery work far better in the books, imo.
However, I think the Belvision adaptations of Tintin work better in terms of bringing forth the comedy, and while some of their episodes would drift so far off from the books to a point of being completely ridiculous and unlike anything Herge would come up with, I think the studio's cinematic adaptation of "Temple of the Sun" works brilliantly in bringing 7 Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun to the screen ,while also maintaining the "heart" and the humor of those adventures.

I remember watching the French dub of some episodes during some French lessons at school here in the UK, and on one occasion our teacher accidentally booted up the English version of Explorers on the Moon! Tintin's English voice was honestly pretty jarring compared to the French one, and it's the French version that I personally prefer even though I don't necessarily understand all of it. I've loved the comics since I was a child and the show is a pretty much spot-on adaptation.
What differences are there between the French and English one that you preferred?
@@motioninart It's mainly the voices, particularly Tintin's. Tintin's English voice was a bit too high-pitched for my liking, probably at least partly because I'd got used to the French version before hearing it for the first time.

@@motioninart Oh, okay, that makes sense. I was a little annoyed that you considered it "forgotten" when I knew a decent amount of people, myself included, still remember it, but I understand you now.
As far as I can tell, America is the exception to the "Tintin-being-popular-in-former-British-or-colonial-countries" rule. In South Africa, my home country and New Zealand, where I live now, a Tintin comic is in pretty much every library.

Tintin is one of if not my all time favorite comic book series.
As a European myself I can assure you that this cartoon series is far from forgotten in my country as well as many others including Tintins home country Belgium
But ofc compared to the likes of Batman & Superman, Tintin isn’t as well known in a country like America

Yeah, no one talks about the 90s Tintin, and I feel it's the closest in accuracy to the comics. Personally grew up with "The Calculus Affair," so parts of this video was nostalgic to me. Although, the less accurate take before Nelvana's take is probably a lot more obscure.

Yes, I've seen several of the episodes from this series, and I have to say it looks deceptively simple. So many adaptations make changes, but these are so close that you'd almost think they just took panels from the original comics and did in-betweens for the motion.
