I believe the lesson is that the Scoobies shouldn't doubt Buffy that much. This happened in the puppet episode as well, they thought she was imagining things but here we see again that she's right!
Same with Ted, and the preying mantis lady. I think it's possible that she really can sense the absence (or presence, with Sid) of a soul, but doesn't realize it, so she just feels annoyed or "wigged" around people who don't match what her senses are telling her.
This is one of those episodes that shows why I always trust Buffy's intuition as a slayer (I'm not talking about her powers, I'm just talking about her tuition in regards to her slayer instincts and how they work together) even when she is under a spell, or in this case losing her soul. There has been times until this point where the Slayerettes/Scoobies haven't trusted said intuition. Giles does in this episode, but not everyone does believe its the roomate. I wouldn't trust any group member (including Buffy) concerning dating advice or situations concerning romance, but will always trust Buffy's slayer intuition. Xander has tried convincing the group that demons, in general, are evil due to his issues, and not dealing with said issues. And as I think, how he decides to approach explaining his opinions (yelling and demanding) only makes a situation where he could be (or is) right, unlistenable. If he deals with his issues, it could be better for him and everyone around him. And in this case, Willow having a worse roommate doesn't mean Buffy isn't correct. Never forget they live on a hellmouth. If the group can assume a student named Rodney not being on a bus returning from a field trip means they need to check to see if the mummy got Rodney, then believing Buffy in this episode should make the list before assuming its a "Linda Blair"/crazy situation. Especially if said situation results from someone or something doing it to her. Buffy's suggestion should have been the first thing they looked into, not dismissed. I wonder what Buffy would have been like entirely soulless. My guss is more Angelus-like than Spike-like.
The reason Oz was with Buffy on patrol was literally in the previous scene but you were talking over it. Willow was worried about Buffy but she said she couldn’t be with her so Oz offered his assistance.
Planting so many seeds this episode. Super fun. Love watching the two of you crack up over it. One of the actors in an interview recently said the writers were encouraged to pull from their life experiences to write epidotes. This feels very much line one of those. One coming up next season that was spot pulled from someone's real life experience, possibly Whedon's.
A few years ago I was at a Zumba class in LA and the girl next to me was this actress. She hadn’t aged a day from when she was on this episode, and she looked great. Almost like her face was a removable mask. Needless to say, I made the Buffy side eye at her. She was absolutely a sweetheart though.
Actually, Mikey and Mike, you might enjoy this roommate factoid. She decided I was evil and "inviting the devil into our apartment" because I was watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and The X-Files. And because I liked doing yoga. Among other maddening things to "help" me (that require a whole podcast in itself, for SURE)... she said she "anointed" my bedroom door with cooking oil (to ward off the devil) and invited her church group over to pray for me. 🙄 *heavy sigh So, you know, maybe you should rethink watching these shows. They're clearly dangerous. 😉😄🤫
My roommate and I had the same system of writing down phone calls because we had to share a phone and therefore the bill so we needed to know how to divide up the bill.
This is one of the funniest episodes of the entire series. So underrated and relatable. Kathy actress did a great job too. She’s sickeningly sweet, but so passive adhesive and annoying. So good! 😂
I like to think that Kathy went to her local interdimensional prosthetic market to buy her human mask and tried to find one that looked like Celine Dion.
Kathy is one of a VERY short list of demons on this show who gets into a fight with Buffy and simply leaves at the end of the episode without being slain!
no way i would ever share aroom with another adult, in the one scene at the start the repeating of the same song would have resulted in the music player flying out the window. boundaries are one thing, but in a small space there is no option for music, you want music use headphones or go to the bar lol as for coming and going meh, it is what it is the prtty war tho, im a master of, i cant mention the things i have done to drive off bad rom mates cause i might get arrested for them lol im also cold hearted and a lil twisted so they never stood a chance muahaha
I spend way too much time watching BTVS reactions and I always remind y’all at this episode not to make the mistake Buffy’s friends often make: by underestimating the slayer’s intuition even when she sounds crazy🙃😊
Buffy is really a product of California teen culture of her time. Recall that the devil dogs heard “Celebrate “ and turned from chasing Buffy to attack the prom.We hear a classic song but to a 1999 teen her response is” that song sucks “. When the patents were teens at the Bronze in Band Candy she wonders with disdain “ is there a Billy Joel concert in town?”. Any teen girl with a Celine Dion poster and listening to Cher was definitely not happening. The very stylish and socially aware Buffy would find these transgressions an assault on her senses. From first hand experience, the girls that watched Buffy with me were very aware of her clothes and hair every episode. All of my girlfriends did not like Kathy because of the music, the flossing, and the cutting of her toenails in front of Buffy was too much. No self respecting girl that was current would listen to Cher( she was from our parents time) and a poster of Celine Dion was lame. She was not to be trusted.
@@leesmith9299 actually I DO think that he had forgotten we had been given an age at some point. While he may not have meant the literal dawn of time, I think he meant she's "always" been a demon, ageless, wreaking vengeance down through the millenia - when in reality a single millennium is closer to the truth. So I think your quibbling over an exaggeration, while amusing, was missing the point, the point being that the reactor forgot that we'd been told roughly how old she is, and was assuming she was older. Pointing out that we know about how old she is was a reasonable comment. "Beginning of time" is up there with the building of the pyramids as a "really long time", and when watching a show where we know the Slayer had been a thing "since forever" - Giles states that as long as there have been vampire, there's been the Slayer, and while that may not be exactly true, that's a lot closer to "the beginning of time" than Anya; she doesn't even predate Christianity. Ashley's comment was perfectly reasonable.
Living Conditions, was quite and interesting episode in that it is showing Buffy going from adolescent to adult. Having now to cope with things that as a child she didn't have to deal with. I am sure that many watching it have been in similar situations when leaving home and having the share with flatmates, and being irritated by the smallest things. Again S4 was strange in that after the High School years the show had to find a new direction. A fairly decent episode, but with some great comedy moments.
You know, Buffy shouldn't really keep her crossbow drawn, cocked, and loaded. It's not good for the bow and string. Sure, it might save a little time, but... I think the fact that Buffy was slowly losing her soul to Kathy was contributing to Buffy also going more and more postal.
I wish one commenter out there would get the “ah yes, Big Sky Country”..line. Also, I wish you guys would leave the Buffy dialogue track on all the time, and only black out the screen as necessary, it’s very distracting to not have the dialogue. It’s weird to sit through the silences with you guys not saying anything too.. Love the “evil music close up” of Buffy when Willow eats the sandwich..so much to love in this season..!
