In my opinion Lacey is one of the better screamers out there. She nails it. Its rare to have great sounding songs with the perfect scream and emotion. I also think Lzzy Hale and Corey Taylor got it down.
+Onizuma13 The best screamers are the ones that can actually also sing normally. Like Corey Taylor, Alyssa, etc because they understand how to hit notes. Screaming has notes too!
I love her explanation of how she screams to emphasize something to herself. That's what sets her apart from so many artists, is her understanding of the power behind the music, and directing it in the right place.
What I noticed about Flyleaf and Lacey's voice is that when you look at other metal bands that have screaming in their music like The Devil Wears Prada and RED you notice that their voices definately sound different, but I noticed after like 5-6 years of screaming Lacey's voice still sounds as it did in their first album. I just thought that was cool.
Red's vocalist has also been training his voice more than when they started, which is part of why it's different. He's been improving it, and improving his technique on it. You can check out his videos on it.
Because like lacey pointed out in the video the advice she receive helped her perserve her perserve her voice, thats what she means by the full voice scream is expensive because if overused she could lose and permanently damage her vocal chords. Look at m.shadows from a7x and james heitfield
Her voice and her screams are amazingly beautiful. I loved it when she screamed Joy will come! and the reason why she screams it, it's so beautiful and it makes a lot of sense why she wanted to do so in her music. Lacey just keeps inspiring me every time I hear her whether it's a song or an interview. She;s amazing
Thanks for this. I used to hate screaming vocals, but that was cause all I'd heard was artists screaming/growling through the whole song. NOT music. Just noise. Perhaps noise with a message, but not the place I'm in. Then I heard Flyleaf. And only certain lines were screamed. It wasn't just rage. It was desperation. Pain. Sorrow. Those struck home. And I knew that I wanted that in my songs. Those one line, passionate, desperate message that's make the listener sit up and listen. Not noise. Pterodactyl noise is an awesome way to describe it. Made me chuckle. :) Thanks!

@@suchabadkitty1293 Lacey and Flyleaf come with a message of hope. If you hear Lacey's story, which is out there on RUclips, and she also wrote a book about, she was in a really dark place and had a terrible tragedy happen in her family when she was 10 years old. After that she fell into depression for the next six years and saw a lot of other dark and messed up things happen in her life. When she was 16 she decided to commit suicide. But the day she planned to do it, she ended up getting into a fight with her grandmother who forced her to go to church. She hated Christianity and only went so her grandma would leave her alone and was still going to commit suicide when it was over. But something miraculous happened in that church building where the pastor suddenly started weeping in the middle of the service. Then he said "there's a suicidal spirit in this room. Please let us pray for you because God has a plan for your life and doesn't want you to die tonight." She didn't go because she was embarrassed and really weirded out. So the pastor just looked awkward. But then when the service was over before she left, a man stopped her at the door and said a bunch of prophetic things he couldn't know. Then he told her Jesus died to take the punishment of our sin on Himself so we don't have to carry it with us anymore, and Jesus offers this gift to anyone who asks Him. He prayed with her and when he prayed she says she had an encounter with God that was so real and she felt His presence show up in front of her. So after that she felt how much God loved her and knew her, and she didn't kill herself. She accepted Jesus into her life. Sorry I wrote like a literal page. I hope that explains where she's coming from and her vision for music. She tells a lot more detail of her story on RUclips that you can find which I definitely recommend, also in her book "The Reason". But their message is that even in sorrow and darkness, there is hope because of Jesus and there is purpose and we were all made for a purpose. She sings about sorrow and anger and pain, but also about beauty and hope and joy. Hope that answers your question. 😊

I listen to all kinds of music, and as I get older I’m starting to realize the music I listen to is reflecting my current mood, even If I’m unaware of what I’m actually feeling. When I need up lifting or a reminder that life will. Ot always has its boot on your head pushing you into the dirt, I listen to Flyleaf or Skillet, when I’m angry or need to release rage, Pantara or Killswitch and anything that’s heavy. But I also feel that you should be acutely aware of what music can do to your mind state and never let it actually take over your mind set.
3:20 gave me goosebumps, recognizing the human we deal in us and rising above it.. thank you for this Lacey! a fan since Flyleaf when i was in a dark phase in life!thank you for sharing your voice!!
I love this woman. I really wish I could take some singing classes and learn to scream, but I'm too nervous to ask my parents about it. Don't get me wrong, they'd be very supportive, thing is they'll want to make me sing in front of family and friends which is a big no no.

56 years old. You scream truth to many various types. Thank you Lacey Sturm. A recent new fan. Found you on 97.5 on Z88.3 app. Building puzzles. Building patience. Your music soothes the evil\anger\pain out of me. So many great musicians in positive rock. This music could change the youth of any nation, to return unto God. Lol. I had to find the lyrics. RUclips has those.
Lacey, you talk about how music shapes ones emotions... Creates a feeling inside of them. Lacey, Your music helped me find who i really am, my Joy in this life! Screaming is definitely something that speaks straight to my heart, and through your music, i'm positive its helped me fight my own demons, and helped me, and my partner to find Hope. Lacey, we will always be a fans. Through your music, its helped me find solitude in our God. All the best to you and your family! Thankyou so much!
She is one of my role models since my teenage years. Not only artistically, but also as a person. Not many artist open up like this. BEST OF LUCK LACY.
Pantera - already liked her but now she's great in my book. Still the only female vocalist whose screams I enjoy. Edit: "It made me more violent." Darn.
I love this girl, but it did kinda let me down to hear her say she doesn't care for Pantera anymore, especially with it being because of how their sound affected her mentality. To me, Pantera had such a huge impact on rock/metal. I feel like she's just looking at it the wrong way. But hey...it doesn't change my opinion on her, at all. I love her just the same, and I love her music just the same.
Lacey I just wanted to come by and say thank you..... Thank you for making such beautiful music and getting me thru the dark days of my life and again I just wanted to say thank you and may god bless you and thank you for making giving me a different perspective and a way to be free at least for 3 or 4 minutes each time I play your songs and it... It just makes me deal with many things Your mini listener Adrian.. God bless you lacey.
Screaming isn’t From the Lord he was never aggressive n loud the devil will confuse you n make u believe things are from him that are not , joy is freeing calm n peaceful never confusing n this definitely sounds demonic to me it’s so disturbing u wouldn’t play this music toa sleeping baby then I shouldn’t be played from God. Now I’m not saying she’s Demonic just been tricked by Satan in believing this app s from God hopefully she will read the verse I’m a still small voice n meditate on that n realize that’s from the Holy Spirit not long shrilling voices
Great video, rly the only singer thats tryed to help anyone learn how 2 scream, and show 2 ways, i love her screams and the video was so great i could scream perfectly after watching
Hi Lacey. Great info. I know you just became a mommy again but when you are able, I would love to see you and We as Human put together a video for "Take the bullets away." That is a powerful song and you do some awesome screaming in that song. I also appreciate your testimony on the Billy Graham's special recently and your song and video of "The Cross." You are so blessed and talented. I've always wanted to be able to sing and do what you do. That has always been my dream. I'm so glad you are able to live yours. I'm sorry you left "Fly Leaf" but I know God has a bigger and better purpose for you. Number 1 taking care of your family and being a Mom to your beautiful children. God bless you Lacey.
Your songs help me when times get tough. They really do help changing a negative situation into a positive one! The screaming does help too! Thanks for the great concerts!
I know that Lacey will most likely never read this. But if you ever do read this, Lacey, thank you so so so unbelievably much. As a female screamer, I have a really hard time being taken seriously, and overall just explaining why I love to sing and scream in my band, which is seen as very much a man's world.. it's so hard to find female screamers to look up to, and to have as that role model, because as much as I admire and am inspired by male vocalists, clean or unclean vocals, there will always be that feeling of isolation, and the weird looks I get when people hear that I scream. Thank you so much for explaining what I couldn't say. Thank you so much for being an inspiration to so many people, and I really hope that one day, I can be an inspiration to someone else, just. Ugh. Thank you so much
I’ve heard a lot of screamo in my time and you can tell who can do it without damaging their voice and Lacey has it down to the point where she doesn’t damage her voice. Corey Taylor used to damage his voice constantly same with the lead singer of Trivium. I’m so glad they finally got it down.
I am late to the Lacey Sturm party because I never gave Flyleaf a proper chance, but I absolutely LOVE her combination of melody and screaming. I can't honestly say I am a Christian per say, but I respect the hell out of her and her talents.
She's really incredible. Not only is she beautiful but she seems original, true to herself and stuck to what she believes (in a good way) ,giving you so much positive energy and a sense of happiness even from a video. It's amazing. God bless her, I feel honored to listen and know her through Flyleaf's music.
You are spot on with so much. All I can say is there are bands that scream because they dont have the talent to have actual lyrics and there are bands that scream because it fits what they are singing about. Glad I got to see you at Sunshine fest several years ago.
I was hooked on Flyleaf (and Lacey) since I'm So Sick and saw them in concert about 3 or 4 times. To see her little self screaming those lyrics live was insane. But between the 1st and 2nd concerts (a year or so between) I had heard she blew her voice out and had to have surgery (many singer have this problem, especially ones who sing like she does). and at the 2nd show she was using a track for the screaming parts. Anyone else remember this or heard this? just wondering if it was true.
they've never used a track, Pat Seals the bass player is the one who made the screams in some songs, and she was still learning how to do the easy scream by 2008, 2009 and 2010. She has done so much better now in her recent tour at the point that she has used both screams in different parts. I'm Not Laughing LIVE is an example she uses both screams, sometimes she uses both of them again in I'm So Sick and Chasm aswell
senditkevin omggg totally forgot I commented this! Wow it’s been so long omg I was so young back then, haven’t listened to them in so long. That’s cool about her solo album! ☺️
This video is perfect! I had COVID a month ago and my lungs and voice haven't recovered still. I had just started learning to scream before I caught it. I was listening to Flyleaf and chatting about it with a friend, upset I can't focus on screaming and she pointed me to this video. Can't wait to surprise my singing teacher with the quiet screams
The Zen of Screaming FTW...!! Train for muscle memory, get the technique in the right way and then just forget about it and go full passion (your own body will do the righ move)... that's a very good and honest advise, by the way
"...that music kinda tore up my soul a little bit. Music has a power to touch our souls in a way that we will recognize esp when we are younger. " TRUTH!
People think distorted guitar sound is okay. Why would anyone bother to criticize to use distorted (overdriven?) voice while singing? Maybe ones need to adjust their ears rather judging...
no offense but fuck people that don't like screaming!!! She shouldn't have to explain herself, I don't agree with songs full of screaming but her songs rarely have screaming. She should do more screaming!
Phil is the reason I first wanted to be a vocalist in the first place, these 25+ yrs ago. He took something I knew a lot about at that young age, anger, and focused it in an empowering way and that really attracted me. But Lacey is spot on here when she says it effects your soul in ways you do not recognize at the time. Even though I was taking an empowering message away from Pantera and other bands like them, in the end it was still feeding anger and angst. In the end it was still debilitating when I was trying to empower myself.
There is this band called the Amity affliction and all the singer does is scream scream and scream it's mostly screaming not singing and lead vocalist Benjamin Burnley and Ivan from five finger death Punch are also good screamers
i don't mind some screaming at all. someone asked lacey sturm why Christians had to scream in their music. her response, and i have to paraphrase, was that their angry. makes sense to me!!.

I think your scream sounds terrifying and cute at the same time. XD 👍
I agree with u at first I was like screaming in music? Why?!? I don’t like that and now all of a sudden I LOVE SCREAMING MUSIC
I love how she blushes after she shows how to scream :D it's so cute
3:20 gave me goosebumps, recognizing the human we deal in us and rising above it.. thank you for this Lacey! a fan since Flyleaf when i was in a dark phase in life!thank you for sharing your voice!!
I love this woman. I really wish I could take some singing classes and learn to scream, but I'm too nervous to ask my parents about it. Don't get me wrong, they'd be very supportive, thing is they'll want to make me sing in front of family and friends which is a big no no.
I feel you.lol
+Meme Queen
I don't know who you are but I feel like I should say this...
DO IT!!!! You will have a beautiful gift for life and you'll NEVER look back.
If you don't get your voice and heart out there, it will be be lost with you when you're gone.
God bless
56 years old. You scream truth to many various types. Thank you Lacey Sturm.
A recent new fan. Found you on 97.5 on Z88.3 app.
Building puzzles. Building patience. Your music soothes the evil\anger\pain out of me.
So many great musicians in positive rock. This music could change the youth of any nation, to return unto God.
Lol. I had to find the lyrics. RUclips has those.
Sorrow is my favorite song..."the ending words " JOy WILL CoMe ...literally makes the song....I love it
Lacey, you talk about how music shapes ones emotions...
Thankyou so much!
plus lacey doesnt over use screams so when u hear it ur all like :O
yea she does, and she has this raspy-ness about her voice sometimes
Lacey has such a blessed soul I love her singing
What I want to know is where did you find the pterodactyl to mimic?
She is one of my role models since my teenage years. Not only artistically, but also as a person. Not many artist open up like this. BEST OF LUCK LACY.
Pantera - already liked her but now she's great in my book. Still the only female vocalist whose screams I enjoy.
Edit: "It made me more violent." Darn.
+Steve Marston True, Pantera doesn't make people violent.
i do the "lazy scream" all the time.. after watching this it gives a whole perspective to me.. i love her so much 🖤
The baby in the background gets *real* quiet when Lacey starts making pterodactyl noises. 😂
Wow! Still hard to believe the sound that comes out of her mouth. She definitely puts her all her heart in it.
It just makes me deal with many things
Your mini listener
Adrian.. God bless you lacey.
Doing that just now by myself as an experienced singer, but a beginner screamer, I can feel the difference and exactly what she means by 'expensive'.
Her talking voice is bliss
She helped me find god
Amen Alex!
🙌
@@makeupbliss6278 You are an absolute clown.
Where did you find it? Under a rock? In the couch cushions?
Thanks for the great concerts!
heh the baby giggle in the background at 4:04 random.
Ugh. Thank you so much
I know this is about the screams and so forth... but God has blessed you with such beauty lol
takecare and God bless you woman! Christian Life FTW!!!
I’ve heard a lot of screamo in my time and you can tell who can do it without damaging their voice and Lacey has it down to the point where she doesn’t damage her voice. Corey Taylor used to damage his voice constantly same with the lead singer of Trivium. I’m so glad they finally got it down.
Te sale de forma orgánica , lo haces bien natural y siempre que lo haces le das a la canción y la música un up. Eres la mejor haciendo el screaming.
Thank you Lacey for making this video. It really helped me to understand screaming better and deeper, especially that microphone technique.
I am late to the Lacey Sturm party because I never gave Flyleaf a proper chance, but I absolutely LOVE her combination of melody and screaming.
I can't honestly say I am a Christian per say, but I respect the hell out of her and her talents.
Chad Worrell she has a solo career now it is amazing
Same here. 2018.
i love when lacey sings along with the song ,the facts that she screams ,i love her energy ,good job
Everytime she'd scream it would freak my dog out lol
Lol. Aww Poor pup.
Poor dog XD
She's really incredible. Not only is she beautiful but she seems original, true to herself and stuck to what she believes (in a good way) ,giving you so much positive energy and a sense of happiness even from a video. It's amazing. God bless her, I feel honored to listen and know her through Flyleaf's music.
she's so cute!
she has the most perfect singing voice. True passion and emotion. Personally the best singer i have ever heard
... and the demon shrieked, "JOY WILL COME!!" lol
Its awesome. We are so glad we got to see you live with Flyleaf in 2007 and 2009!
Guess who’s practicing in their mini van now lol
This girl!
Lacey tickles me to death when she interviews. Everything she does is so enamoring. She is such a joyful soul.
It's sad that she left.. :( But at least she's happy :]
She has a solo album out!!!
senditkevin omggg totally forgot I commented this!
Train for muscle memory, get the technique in the right way and then just forget about it and go full passion (your own body will do the righ move)... that's a very good and honest advise, by the way
Thank you Lacy. I love how you put your heart and soul into your music.
There is NO reason at all, Lacey should only have 27,000 Subscribers!!!
Lacy thank you! I've been trying to learn to sing and scream for years and this finally made it click for me!
love love love!!!!! ❤❤❤ Kristen May needs to watch this!
LaTonya Newsome 😅
"...that music kinda tore up my soul a little bit. Music has a power to touch our souls in a way that we will recognize esp when we are younger. "
TRUTH!
People think distorted guitar sound is okay. Why would anyone bother to criticize to use distorted (overdriven?) voice while singing?
Maybe ones need to adjust their ears rather judging...
JOY WILL COME!!!!
no offense but fuck people that don't like screaming!!! She shouldn't have to explain herself, I don't agree with songs full of screaming but her songs rarely have screaming. She should do more screaming!
being taught by Lacey how to scream, my life is getting closer to perfection ♥
Tell me why I’m laying in my bed at 6 am screaming into my hands
lying in bed°
Phil is the reason I first wanted to be a vocalist in the first place, these 25+ yrs ago. He took something I knew a lot about at that young age, anger, and focused it in an empowering way and that really attracted me. But Lacey is spot on here when she says it effects your soul in ways you do not recognize at the time. Even though I was taking an empowering message away from Pantera and other bands like them, in the end it was still feeding anger and angst. In the end it was still debilitating when I was trying to empower myself.
Where can I find this Zen Of Screaming? Everyone goes on about how good it is!
You can buy it on Amazon which was how I got it
Josiah Yancy thanks!

Kubes Voxel Click on "add to" then select "Watch later"
i didn't know i needed to see this today, but i did. Thank you, Lacey!
Not endorsing pantera, damn I like pantera.
you can't not endorse it and like it at the same time, i think,
There is this band called the Amity affliction and all the singer does is scream scream and scream it's mostly screaming not singing and lead vocalist Benjamin Burnley and Ivan from five finger death Punch are also good screamers
Benjamin Burnley is the lead singer of breaking benjamin.
i don't mind some screaming at all. someone asked lacey sturm why Christians had to scream in their music. her response, and i have to paraphrase, was that their angry. makes sense to me!!.
Be angry and sin not!
More than a year after you recorded this video I'm watching it... haha but it's nice!!! :) the techniques you use in your screaming, now I have to practice more and take care of my voice ;) Thank you very much Lacey!!! you are awesome
God bless you and your family :D
greetings from Ecuador :D
She's so sweet :)
