In this video I talk about how I went about choosing the best bolt action rifle and what qualities I want in a bolt action.
I would have to go with the Swedish M38 would be my pick. Very accurate, easy recoil management, wonderful cartridge, excellent sights, amazing action.

Nobody asked me, but as a left handed shooter the straight handles work best.
Bought a 1895 Chilean Mauser (7MM) off someone years ago for cheap. It needed some help, okay a lot of help. Came with a shortened barrel of 21 inches, a wooden sporter stock someone did a blotched job glass bedding, a broken Bolt Sleeve and had this two piece low profile safety, properly the worse turned down handle job I have ever seen and had it tapped for scope mounts, no sling mounts or stripper clips which was the least of my worries.
I replaced both of the damaged bolt parts, removed the mismatched scope mounts and capped off the screw holes.
The stock I decided to keep, whom ever sporterized it did this decades ago, it has very fine craftsmanship, semi pistol grip that feels good in the hand. So I just cleaned up some of the glass bedding bogger work and removed the old finish, added some sling hardware and and coated in true oil. She still needs a good recoil pad, as the plastic thing this sporter stock once had came to me in pieces, relying on the leather ammo carrier to help with some recoil.
No, she will not win any beauty contests or is all original. This is a rifle I feel comfortable carrying, can find ammo for in most stores that have ammo for hunting and not have to source places online constantly and most importantly.. She goes BANG with every trigger squeeze. What more can one ask for?
Even with straight wrist i would still choose the Swedish m38

I have a No.4 Longbranch Enfield. The person I bought it from around 2002 told me it was a wall-hanger, and I believed it because it looked like it. A year and a half ago or so, I decided to try to bring it back to life. The bore looked like a jungle was growing it it, and the gun wouldn't cycle rounds worth crap. They usually just shot out the top. But I did some research. The first thing I found in a RUclips video (which I can't find now, dang-it - it was a great video) is this: there are 4 or 5 slightly different styles of magazines that were used in Enfields over the rifle's very long service life, and the magazine in mine was the wrong one. I got the right style, and saw an immediate improvement. The next thing I noticed was that, from looking at pictures and exploded diagrams, there appeared to be a small screw missing from the left side of the receiver. Sure enough, my rifle was missing the ejector screw. So I got one of those, too. And finally, I took some advice to check the extractor spring on the bolt. I found there was very little springy in my extractor spring. So I got one of those, too. The bore that I thought was ruined cleaned up beautifully and now shines. So after all my fixes, the rifle cycles and shoots great. It rarely jams except when caused by a cost-cutting measure taken on rifles like mine that were made in Canada and the US during the war: the complicated bolt removal mechanism was replaced with a simple slot in the rail near the breach., On mine, the edge of that slot has been damaged. So, sometimes it pops out if I'm not careful when closing the bolt.
The MAS 36 is the simplest design to strip and clean, it also features the best of the Mauser and Lee Enfield actions, young man you have a lot to learn.
The bolt is beautifully simple but I can understand the lack of trust in the rear locking lug. Back in the day quality control on ammo was not as good as it is today so having a stronger then needed action was a boon to the shooter. Also the lack of a safety rubs me the wrong way.
The thing I dislike about the MAS36 is the rear sight. The only way to adjust the rear sight is to replace the sight leaf.
If you reload, you can modify a 6.5x55 case.
Try a different technique with the straight bolt. Don't use fingers but rather use of the Palm for actuation will be faster. Also the straight bolt is fairly easily used by left handed folks using an overhand movement with the left hand. It can be done and I'm able to use old Mauser rifles being a lefty that have straight bolt handles. So if one is a lefty we're not entirely left out of the game and a smooth well worn Mauser 98 type bolt action can be enjoyed by us.

At one time or another I have owned all these rifles and liquidated all except for the M-1917, and a Yugoslav Mauser that looks like it was made for a parade unit and shoots really exceptionally well.
A side mount sling is harder to use to strap in for long distance shooting. As you age you will realize how much better an appetite sight is, it is also faster at acquisition of targets.
If you only own one Military bolt action rifle, I would go with the M1917.
I like the Steyr M95, because no one on the range wants to shoot it! Actually - I like my K-11 Carbine!

I have a k-11 that was re barreled for .308 probably in the 60s. Still haven't shot it because I'm worried the action cant handle the pressure. Maybe I'll try some 7.62 NATO in it soon.
Honest to God, I'm convinced that I'm faster with a k31 than a lee enfield. I haven't clocked myself, but the ease of operation is undeniable

Your not unless you use your right hand and trigger finger the same way...with the Enfield the bolt position and trigger position are perfect for rapid shots.
I started collecting milsurps with K31 and thought they where the fastest being familiar with Mosins and K98s...but once I shot an Enfield....thier isn't anything faster.
The K31 seemed slightly too heavy for me but the balance is good. Plus, it's a 30cal which violates your choice.
The best one ever was a FN 98 small ring Mauser made for the Dutch police ,with a 17,3 inch barrel chambered for 7X57.hunted with it in Michigan for 35 years before handing it down...it has a big gold crown on the receiver and a figured walnut stock,,I had a Mannlicher Schonauer..that was sorta nice too

I had a Chilean Steyr 1912 short rifle for a little while (not converted to 7.62) and it was a great, handy little 98 pattern mauser. Only complaint was the delicacy of the upper handguard and scarcity of replacements.

So, how is 7.5x55 Swiss any different then .30-06? 174gr @ 2640fps (for GP11) vs 150gr @ 2880 (M2 Ball). Both produce similar recoil energy. If that's the case, the '03a3 should have been in the running, as well.

The reason they make all new bolt action rifles with turn down bolts is because people want to mount optics. Other than optics mounting, I don't see a need for turn down bolts on a rifle you are not mounting a scope too. Yeah, a turn down bolt is a little easier to use from the shoulder and a little faster. The difference is minimal because at the end of the day, its still bolt action and any semi-auto is going to smoke you in any speed contest.
try shoot a mosin and then a no1 or no4 303 with any speed and then try to discount ergonomics
Sean Jackson You act like I haven’t. It doesn’t matter if you have a Mosin or an SMLE. Bolt action is slow. If you want speed, buy a semi-auto like am M1 Garand or FN-49.

I learnt some valuable stuff about bolt action rifles from this video. My favourite will always be Swedish Mauser in 6.5 calibre. But I do like the German Mauser K98 in 7 mm.
Where did you find a Mauser K98 in 7mm?
Great topic for a video, but I didn't hear your reasons for excluding longer barrels. For distance shooting, a longer barrel usually results in a faster moving bullet because the expanding gasses continue influencing the bullet as it travels down the barrel. Even with a long barrel, there's still a lot of burning powder following the bullet out the muzzle. When shooting after dark, you can see that the flame continues for several feet.
My two K31s are my favorite Bolt action rifles. I tried the K11, but I always am drawn back to the K31.
I still need a K11 for my collection.

The Swedish Mauser target rifles come with a horn than slides along the rifle grip. Their sniper slings are quite nice too
Rate of fire and magazine capacity being neglected out of hand so quickly while a factor such as where the sling mounts are located is carefully deliberated on, seems pretty dubious in my opinion.
Rate of fire is a simple measure of what is affected by a whole lot of things about the rifle, and you're going to be carrying your rifle more than you're shooting it. I think rate of fire is addressed in little things like straight vs turned down.
I agree on magazine capacity, and stripper clips are also pretty important as well (but that matters a little less given how almost *everything* uses Mauser stripper clips).
Mag capacity matters a little less for stripper clip fed bolt guns. 5 rounds or 10...once the fight starts it only really matters for the first mag since you would have to pause and load a second clip while the guy with a 5 round capacity is already shooting back at you.
Yuibot So the ten round mag can function as a 5 round mag in a pinch but given a bit more time can be brought back up to double the other guy’s capacity.
Either way you view it, it’s still a more important factor than what sling swivels are marginally more convenient to use.

I think best is subjective. I shoot my mosin when im feeling aggressive. I have to beat and slap that bolt around until it wears me out and im ready for a nap. Its the best at giving you a workout

26 inches is fairly common big game rifle barrel length (in sporter configuration) atleast with the magnums, 6.5mm or 0.264in on up, but generally they run from 22in - 24in, standard and Magnum calibers alike. Weatherby makes some rifles with 28 inch barrels in there super duper mega ultra uber magnums.... theres just something wrong when a .30 caliber bullet is pushed too elephant rifle energires lol, love weatherby's though
The k31 is a great rifle but my issue is that I'm left handed. Something you might consider is that straight bolt rifles are easier to operate ambidextrous or for a lefty. But since I'm a lefty I have to have a Mauser derived type action and in that case nothing else comes close to Ruger's left hand GSR scout rifle in 308 win. Its my answer for a left hand mauser and it just works near or far and I've tried it onto elknsize game and across clear cuts and mountain canyons. Its the only choice for a bolt action for lefties who are mostly forgotten.
The M48 Mauser fits most of the criteria you are looking for except the caliber choice. It shoots 8mm which is a lot more common. So ammo quantity over quality. The turn down bolt knob is flattened underneath making the turning of the bolt a lot more comfortable so even if the rifle doesn't fire your desired caliber it is still a very comfortable rifle to shoot. It is actually shorter than the exalted K98K and even more common. It's barrel length stands at 23.25 inches. It is worth considering in the future, but now that I know the Chilean 1935 has all those attributes you mentioned I think I really want one now.
One factor I would add, and would probably be an even bigger disqualifying factor for a bolt action rifle (than rimmed cartridges) is reliance on enbloc clips. Stripper clips can be just as fast to load but also allow you to load the rifle with loose rounds as well, unlike enbloc systems. Also enbloc systems rely on the clips being of consistent quality and in good condition (they’re easily damaged) or else you’ll have reliability problems. I’ve experienced way more feeding issues with Carcanos due to clip-related problems than rimlock with an Enfield or Mosin.

I like the attributes of the Yugo M48A, 8MM. All the same features of the Chilean Mauser. Tough to beat. 8mm is just a bit easier to get.
The M1917 would be great if it weren't so damn heavy. Thing weighs as much if not more than an M1. Very accurate though, love sporterized versions that keep the original barrel length and front sight
Swedish 1896 for me. Fixed magazine, rimless ammunition, front lugs (no 3rd rear lug like a 98 but I think 2 is more than enough for 6.5x55), one piece bolt body and head, Mauser extractor, 3 position safety, it’s perfect to me.
Now yes, the 98 is superior, those 3 lugs make it the safest action in the world, but man I love the smoothness of the 96. By no means a weak action either.

Enjoyed this video a lot. I would only take issue with the side mounted sling requirement. It's fine for packing a rifle, not so good if you are using the sling to support the rifle in a shooting position. Also l owned a Yugoslavia Steyr that had a sling swivel on the wrist of the stock. I like the Madsen M47. It has rear locking lugs but is superbly accurate and sight acquisition is the best you can get in my opinion.
I have an Israeli Mauser in 308 that honestly meets your criteria perfect. Thing is I prefer my Arisaka carbine. It’s lighter and I love that little 6.5. And although it’s a straight bolt handle I just don’t mind it too much compared to the plus’s
Thanks for sharing your opinions. There is a looming and, I think, unanswered question, however. Are you closing a rifle as a civilian for target shooting or hunting or a optimized military rifle for a soldier in the field (and here, is it perfection in shooting or reliability or maintainability? - e.g. rear locking lugs are easier to clean) or a design for a necessarily stressed national economy planning for a war requiring an easily produced weapon? One's choices will be different depending upon this. It would be interesting to know your thinking here. It may even be useful to do videos on each of these. Thanks you.

The first centrefire rifle I acquired was an Interarms Mark X in .270 Win. I got it second or third hand. The action is a Mauser copy, controlled feed by Zastava from the then, Yugoslavia. The barrel is an English Whitworth. I have no idea where the trigger is from. The stock is a decent piece of walnut, in the classic American style.
Accuracy was marginal. The best I could get from handloads was about 1 1/2 in. at 100 yards. (One of these days I'll get around to doing a glass bedding job.) But in North Central BC where I live, shots are rarely over 200 yards and frequently under 100, so that was accurate enough. Probably half the deer and moose I've taken were with that rifle. I went on to acquire a tack driving .300 Win Mag (Krico), an equally accurate 6mm Remington (Ruger Model 77) and an amazing 22-250 (Remington 700 BDL).
I still kept reaching for that .270, partly because it was my first big game rifle and thus a sentimental favourite, partly because I love the .270 Win cartridge (thank you, Jack O'Connor).
Having the .270 I never saw the need for a 30-06 but I'd love to acquire a Model 1917 Enfield, the 26 (not 28) in. barrel notwithstanding.

The best rifle might have been the K98k with a 6,5+55 calibre. The Danish police did this by putting Schultz&Larssen 6,5*55 barrels on a small number of Wehrmacht rifles.
I read somewhere that there were some Czech VZ 24 Mausers chambered for 7mm Mauser. If so, that would seem to fit all your requirements, provided you could find one with a turned-down bolt handle. (There are some floating around, due to the rampant mis-matching of parts.)

I get the sense that we are not talking about what would make the best military surplus rifle as a product of its time and the conflicts it was used in, and what you consider to be the closest to modern bolt action rifles. As a consequence, you're just comparing Masuers plus the K31.
Personally, I think the best milsurp boltgun is the Spanish M1916 Mauser. It doesn't have a semi pistol grip, but it fits all of the rest of the requirements while also having the benefit of being available in either 7x57mm Mauser or 7.62x51mm NATO. Depending on whether you live in Europe or America, these are both very common, popular hunting rounds with plenty of modern production ammo available, which means both soft-point hunting ammo and FMJ range ammo are going to be cheaper than other, less commonly used or outright obsolete milsurp calibers and it can be a daily shooter without needing to worry about reloading your brass.

That simple ! Imo that title belongs to the M1896 Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 , its accuracy is legendary and was made with Krupps tool steel imported to Sweden from the Ruhr Valley in Germany , the finest in the world. Carl Gustafs are the creme of the Mauser crop 🇸🇪😍
I had an absolutely beautiful Arisaka converted into a sporter with a 22 inch barrel and a carved lightweight stock. However, it was chambered for the .300 Savage cartridge and the combination of that cartridge and the very lightweight barrel and stock made this beautiful gun kick like a mule...
For me its my Swiss k11. Just perfect overall length and weight, fastest smoothest straight pull action, 6 shots, good sights, well balanced and a very capable accurate cartridge. I like it better than the K31.

@@MilsurpWorld The k11 has a slightly thinner profile barrel which in my opinion balances better, the older rear-locking action of the K11 is also a lot smoother in my opinion, it feels like its running on ball bearings, I can cycle it so fast its crazy.
I have a very similar rifle. A very rare brazilian 1935 Mauser in 7x57. I like it a lot.
My 1909 Argentine cavalry carbine made all the criteria except for the additional .65mm of mass.

Well you did say it was your opinion from the start and you ended choosing one of the best of the 98 Mausers. Despite the slow and vulnerable to dirt action with its 45 degree bolt turn and cock on opening, an awkward safety catch, the lack of the fast and accurate peep sight, lack of free floating barrel and only a five round magazine, all facts, it was YOUR opinion. Now in MY opinion it fires one of the best military calibres ever, the 7 x 57 Mauser. Cheers.
7mm mauser is better for a straight shot definitely a good round but 8mm is better ballistic wise and at longer range. Love the collection by the way.

As an owner of a very nice Sako M39 made in 1942 I think it is rather frustrating that he instantly removed it and called it okish. Trust me these things are great. They are almost certainly more accurate than his Chilean Mauser. The iron sights are better too. The Artic Birch stock is better in cold weather and has the option for both side and under sling mounts. This guy saw the 7.62x54r cartridge and was like no way. People also see the word Mosin and immediately write this gun off as some garbage rod. My bolt action is rather smooth and cleanly moves without me having to smack the bolt like my 91-30. People need to educate themselves on these guns and stop viewing them as just another Mosin garbage rod.

I noticed with swede mausers and their straight grips that they work better when you're wearing gloves. You get a lot more purchase and for some reason your arm doesn't naturally chicken-wing when this happens, atleast for me. No idea why.
You had previously disqualified the K31 as the caliber is outside your 6.5mm to 7mm bracket.

Well, I find your criteria interesting however other people have different criteria so while I find yours fairly good my choice of best bolt action rifle is different than yours. My criteria are how accurate the gun is, how much it weighs and how easy is it to shoot, recycle the bolt, and clean. As for accuracy I haven't found any bolt action rifle as accurate as the Schmidt Rubin straight pull the Swiss use. I find it easy to shoot. Easy to clean. And it is an attractive rifle. The K31 may be a little longer than you like but this rifle was your runner-up choice. Now as for bullet size I think the 30-06 has the best power and is the best hunting round ever made. Smaller rounds actually will not take a grizzly down as easily as a 30-06 will! I know they are flat shooting and all that stuff but you get in front of a charging Grizzly you are going to want the round that has the most power and the 30-06 is that round. Now I love the 1903 rifle. If it had the straight-pull bolt and accuracy of the K31 it would be my first choice. However, it doesn't! So in the end I found your video interesting, UI did click the like button and will watch a couple of your other videos before I click subscribe.
Turn down boat handles are def better when you're mounting a scope which is pretty much what anyone who's buying a new bolt action is doing. Whereas in the past it was just irons unless you're talking about dedicated sniper rifle which are honestly probably the best rifles given the selection and fitting hand they recieved.

Rimmed cartridges I can go along with as being problematical sometimes. Rear locking lug issues are non-issues actually. Rear locking lugs are just as strong as front locking lugs. Given the millions of military rifles with rear locking lugs diminishes your argument there. Barrel length, bolt design and pistol grips I go along with. Caliber size is important so you don't beat the crap out of yourself but cartridge availability is ultimately the defining issue so you can feed your weapon.

I like your choice of the better rifle in the Mauser. I however am not to concerned about battle rifles I am look more for a hunting style rifle. I do prefer the control feed of the Mauser action which works well in both a battle rifle and hunting rifle.

Enfield fans always use the very biased Bloke to defend the inferior features of the LE.
They all have short comings ..like you didn't mention how some calibers are hard to find or weight of the platform. Instead focused on bon starter issues like rear locking lugs ..now rimmed rounds is a valid point and your other points all have value so all in all a great video...my favorite comment was sling position, spot on. As for my pick it would have to be the Ishapore 2A1 close second is the K11..good video...don't get all touchy about us Enfield lovers 😎 were all cocky over how well the bolt cycles and magazine capacity.🤪
Neither have I but you are kidding yourself if you think .303 being a Rimmed cartridge is a good thing. Easily the WORST thing about Enfields.
I'm very happy with my $375.00 1938 Persian Mauser. Nicely sporterized, turned down bolt, already had a nice Redfield base, 23 3/4" barrel 8mm-06. Strong recoil, but not sharp like a magnum.
The Spanish 1916 Short Rifle seems like it hits some of the same boxes as the Chilean, what are the drawbacks that rifle has in your eyes?

Owned a few. Love the 1930s C-stocks on rebuilds. But its basically a Mauser with a lots of bells and whistles added to it. Not as strong as the 98 Mauser either. Basically a Match/Competition rifle. It excels at CMP Matches for a reason. Unfortunately those sights are real hard to use in low light. Now give me 03A3 with a bunch of milled 03 parts and a C-stock added to it, and it would be up there. Better yet, give it a four or six grove barrel!

To take the M39 off because of the rimmed cartridge is sad because they really are great guns and would for sure make my top three best from ww2 but then again that is my humble opinion

The Austrian built (Steyr), 'Greek Contract' Y1903 Mannlicher Schoenauer and variants used the 6.5X54MS.

You didn't mention safeties: I think that the Mauser safety is extremely good because it is very easy for say an instructor on the range to see it's position from a distance and of course it's easy to use.

I don't disagree with your choice. I picked the 1936 Mexican short rifle. Small ring 98 action, 7x57, side sling, bent bolt, semi pistol grip. It hits most of your criteria. Plus it has that cool Springfield looking knurled cocking knob. I got it because it was different, not because I thought it is a better choice. I like them all!
That sounds like a good candidate for best Mauser.

To me rimjam is a non issue as per bloke's video on the no4 so id say the best bolt gun is a no4. Also peep sights allow you to see under the target and rear lockers are plenty strong for military carts

Yes they where probably using modern productio ammo with non champfered rims, try using ppu or even the proper mkvII military ammo and your luck might improve. Also you might be interested in bloke on the range's video where he explains what im saying
Lee Enfield apologists usually use the excuse that "the rim isnt shaped perfectly" to excuse malfunctions in Lee Enfields. It's either that or "the magazine feed lips aren't shaped right", or "you didn't load the clip correctly". When so many things have to be perfect for a rifle to perform then there is probably something wrong with the design. Also, you can watch my videos where my No 4 jams shooting British WW2 ammo.

By your own logic since most modern rifles come with under slung slings, it is better. Also, rim lock is only and issue on Lee Enfields and Mosins if the rifle has an issue. There is a device (whose name I don't recall) that holds the next round down when the current round is loaded.
The device is called an Interruptor. Only the Mosin has it. It is the one and ONLY thing I find interesting on the Mosin…
Anything calibers less than 30cal start to have performance problems as far as tracer ammunition for machine guns is concerned and it is just logistically easier to have your service rifle utilize the same cartridge. That's why most major countries stuck with the 30+ calibers through most of the 20th Century.
The German military got the cartridge right in 1888 with the 7.92x57J, improved it somewhat in 1905 with the JS, and later with the JsS.
Paul Mauser got it right in 1898 and anything after that was a step backwards(1903 Springfield, 1917 Enfield, Type 99 Nambu/Arisaka), including all the sporting rifles like the Rem 700, Ruger 77, and, yes, all the Win 70.

I’ll play -3 years late. Your program but hard to take this serious when 2 of the most successful bolt military rifles is the enfield and the mosin although neither would be my choice. I would have to go with the 03a3.

I have the 35 Chilean. That saddle ring hits you in the face on recoil. Otherwise great rifle.
Your video was interesting and had a lot of logic. I don't think your "side sling " is so desireable, you did have some logic to it, but even in your illustration video, the pistol grip was off to the side of your hip. Only if you are carrying the rifle bandolero style, can I see your logic applying, but then access to your rifle is compromised, plus wearing your pack at the same time would be a trick, but overall your logic was interesting. I thought you would be including hunting rifles too, but as military rifles go, I think you chose ok.
