The MAS 36 was the last bolt-action rifle adopted by a "modern" military for good reason. This rifle was at the beginning of the program intended to arm second line troops. The MAS 40/44 was not yet ready, it only took a few months, reworked after the war it would give the MAS 44 and its very direct descendants the MAS 49 and the MAS 49/56. The MAS 40 was a semi-automatic rifle with direct gas borrowing with magazines of 10 7.5mm cartridges refillable thanks to two clips of 5 cartridges or one clip of 10 cartridges depending on the supplies. The next ones in the family will all have detachable magazines, a French version of the M 14 US.
A splendid MAS 36 1st type ! I also can see it had the february 1939 change, that is to say a slight modification of the bolt plug for a better safety. With a special consequence : you can use a non-modified bolt on every MAS 36, whatever its type and whenever it has been made, but you can't use a modified bolt on a non-modified rifle. Fortunately, most pre-1939 MAS 36 rifles have been modified (but not mine, though...)
That is one strong action being the receiver built from one forged billet like the M1886. Using the Mauser style magazine and bolt the French could build it faster just with a practical design.
I remember back from the mid 1990's until around 2010 or so, gun shops couldn't give away MAS-36 rifles. You could get them for next to nothing and you had a decent rifle, not great, but would work. Now they seem to be going for a fortune for some reason.

Try Aim Surplus. They usually carry new production ammo from Prvi Partisan (PPU). They had.some.on the sight a few days ago at $24.95 per box of 20. During the ammo crisis I. 2008/09 when 5.56x45 was $19 a box of 20 I bought 1000 round of 7.5x54 French at $10.95 per box of 20. I shoot it out of both my MAS 36 and my 49/56. It is non corrosive and I have not had any problems with PPU. I have also fired their 6.5 Carcano, 303 British and 7.5x55 Swiss and have never experienced any issue or defective rounds. I also like PPU's 7.62 Nagant and 7.62 Tokarev.
I forgot about the no safety on this. They had this on the previous rifle too. When you first hear this as a armchair viewer it sounds the most insane thing ever; until you learn some other countries didn't put safeties on certain sub-machine guns, too. Some just didn't bother switching it on and just left the barrel not chambered or without the mag in until combat. Things were different back then for sure.
I don't know why they keep mentioning it's an ugly gun seems beautiful and elegant to me
I know it looks good
Glock owners are used to people calling beauty ugly
I just LOVE French Guns SO DAMN MUCH
Their Designs really have a good amount of Uniqueness ✊🤟🔥👌💯❤️

Just picket up a WW2 Mas 36 at a local gun show all matching except the bolt.

Awesome!! Always wanted one

Very good & informative presentation. Well done Sir .
They keep calling it an ugly when that's the most beautiful gun I've ever seen next to the double action revolver

Madsen M47 was adopted by Colombia and was developed from scratch.
Cool
Has a very! Strong action regardless of rear lugs
Use mine as a mountain hunting rifle out west.
I held one a few years ago at a gun store. Wasn't a fan of it. That's just me.
