Thanks for watching. I joined not really expecting to win an official Nintendo Smash Ultimate Items-on tournament, so I'm just as surprised as you guys. EVO is this weekend, so if you see a person called Heeew on stream or in person, that's probably me. Please support me to not going 0-2.
Also big shout outs to Nintendo to hosting this. Hope they get much more involved in the competitive scene.

That game and watch you played in grand finals just placed top 8 at smash factor 8
compared to the slaughter due to items, I got slightly excited to see at least that was a good round.
And he was the best smash 4 G&W. And he finished 13 and 17 at two EVO.
Watching the gnw set really makes me wish they removed him from the game. He's just so bland.
@@emceehawaii7542 Bruh, how is he bland? Most of his kit is completely different from any other fighter, and a good amount of those different moves are viable in one way or another.
@@moonsalibi his kit may be different but his playstyle is as bland as it gets, it's entirely jump then through out an aerial. It really isn't that unique. I love his animations though

The fact that top 16 had no items legit surprised me. That's,, surprisingly fair for a Nintendo tournament.

That Nintendo tournament wasn't necessarily fair at all. By the final 16, the skill level and matchups against Heeew seemed to take a nosedive, because the majority of good players were weeded out by item RNG. So for Heeew to consistently perform in a maelstrom of luck, he'd need someone like Richter to safely read and punish people reaching for explosive items and Final Smashes. Gap-closing characters, who are Richter's counter, got weeded out. So then it became just him and his B-moves against Regi, the only other competent player in the final 16. (Regi probably took care of an itemless counter for Heeew, too.)

i actually entered into this tournament, and i got knocked out on the first bracket. my opponent's first item was a rathalos assist trophy less than 10 seconds into the match.

I can see why Nintendo wants items in the tournament. It's one of the things that makes it different. Nintendo wants to show off the stuff that makes it unique to other fighters.
And if you're good enough, you can win with or without items.
Well yeah, you _can_ win. Items just means you can also easily win if you're not good.
Full items invalidate most of the roster and turn it into a clown show where none of your kills come from actually using your character.
Partial items isn't _as_ bad, but you still randomly die super early into a stock in a way that could very easily hand a victory over to the less skilled player. Bombers were on, which means that almost any attack could hit one that suddenly spawned in front of you and kill you at 40%. Just for example.

Hi Heeew, big fan! I won the first North America Open for the Southwest Region months back and got flown to Boston. I played in the June Open but lost to Villager slingshot spam deep into the bracket. I met Aarow, the Ridley/Young Link you played! He was flown out with me. And the ROB, Zero, did really well in the first Open tourney. And that Game & Watch you played, Regi, is a good buddy of mine! I was in an online brawl clan with him back in the day! I'm sure by now you know he's one of the best G&W's in the world, and ranked in Mexico! Congrats on the win! I'm rooting for you at EVO!

To be honest, items and comepetitive can exist at the same time. If you have doubt, highly recomends watching JP official league. Tons of talented players such as zackray, Shuton, KEN, Abadango and Hikaru are enjoying and showing us hype item matches. Their high level item meta is really interesting to watch.

I like the positive outlook, but you have to remember those guys basically don't have a choice regarding competing with the items. Sure, they could not enter, but as a professional gamer it's not exactly a smart choice.
Eh they give people a huge advantage and those are the fights competitive people don't like to see. A skilled player will dominate, and the less skilled will close the gap with their pet rathalos. It's the same reason steroids are looked down upon and illegal.
Clearly they have underestimated what a casual Richter can do.

It only ever works if the player being hit by it jumps. The move can barely even lift you without the player being hit actively jumping with it. Heeeew jumped there and because of that it was able to take him off the top.

Limited items can be fun. Comboing with throwables on any character instead of just Peach, Link, etc. adds more variety.
