- Today we taste and review Michter's Barrel Strength Rye and Michter's American Whiskey + Pikesville Rye makes a cameo.
Portland bars to check out:
*Vault Cocktail Lounge*
*Southland Whiskey Kitchen*
*Multnomah Whiskey Library* (get there about a half hour before it opens if you want to get in)
*Highland Stillhouse* (Oregon City)
*Bootleggers' Whiskey Bar* (Beaverton)
*Primrose & Tumbleweeds* (Hillsboro - *Tumbleweeds Saloon* is a speakeasy in the back that's open to the public during the summer)
Also, make sure you check out Distillery Row in Portland. There are a bunch of distilleries within walking distance that you can visit. There's some fantastic whiskeys being made, along with rums, vodkas, gins, etc.
Miranda Cooley is actually the expert on where to go in Portland lol
Can't wait to try this! After a 20 year drinking hiatus, the first bottle of whiskey I purchased was Michter's American based solely on Rex's facial expression when he tried it.(still my go to favorite). For obvious reasons I generally avoid looking at Rex during the reviews (especially during the greasy hair days) but I was glad I was watching then. I now ignore the tasting notes and comments and watch for the bug eyed Rex to appear. Although its light years from pretty, it has turned out to be a fool proof whiskey buyers guide. Bug eyed Rex=Amazing whiskey!

They did kinda' nailed it at the end. BTW it's fun to watch them struggle :D
+Mihail Manev oh,it is funny to watch them struggle.
8:00 OMG...I rewound that 5 times and laughed harder at the memories it conjured from days gone by with each replay! Golden stuff there Daniel!!!!!! 🤣😂🤣😂👍👍👍
I live in Portland. If you want a big selection other than the Multnomah whiskey library there are a number of options. These are all going to center around my neighborhood in SE, because I don’t really go all over town to drink. Sapphire hotel has a killer selection, but it operates as a restaurant. Great for dates or happy hours, but not great if you just want to hang out late and have a drink. For a pub like atmosphere Horse Brass pub is excellent. Spacious, and although they focus mostly on beer, they have an excellent range of scotch and American whiskey available. If you want a place with good music to enjoy with your dram, just go wherever Strange Babes are DJing. They play the best fucking music and they seem to always pick the coolest bars in town.
Happy to hear recommendations from other portlanders. There are many places in this city I haven’t become acquainted with yet.
Sean Roberts Portland! I’m a regular at Vintage. Also in SE Portland.
@@dawson0000 I'll check it out, thanks for the tip.
Also, the Highland Stillhouse in Oregon City for a large selection of scotch. If you want to travel to Beaverton there is the Westgate Bourbon Bar & Tap House.
Daniel! Finish your thought... if I'm in Portland and don't want to spend all of my money at Multnomah Whiskey Library, I should go to..................
rmckinst Vintage in SE Portland.
Loyal Legion and Vintage on the east side. Southland Whiskey Kitchen and Vault on the west side. Highland Stillhouse in Oregon City and Westgate in Beaverton.
Swine Moonshine & Whiskey Bar on 808 SW Taylor st.
Sidecar 11
will you be reviewing GOT single malts anytime soon ?
So I spend the end of each day with a drink and a video from the Whiskey Vault.. and I search around and watch what I'm drinking. But I don't see any Chivas. What's the deal - it's mentioned a few times.. is this the new JW Black? I'd send you a bottle or three, but I'm not in the US
Michter's makes some good whiskies. I really enjoy the sour mash and American whiskey.
Holy shit, I finally got caught up. I've been watching all of the episodes here and on the tribe channel in order and I've never heard this mentioned on the show. The other day I was drinking lapsang tea and laphroaig triple wood. I put a couple drops of laphroaig into the tea. It tasted like cooking meat on a campfire with a little pine thrown in the fire since lapsang is typically smoked with pine. It was delicious and it got me wondering what it would be like to make a smoked tea, like lapsang, but with peat instead of pine.
I'm not sure what kind of tea lapsang tea is, but I hear that green tea is a common whiskey mixer in other parts of the world :)
@@AdamPFarnsworth lapsang is a smoked black tea. Whiskey and green tea sounds interesting. I'll have to try it
Instead of Portland, you could swing down to Eugene. There is a wonderful Whiskey location here.
Yeah, but then you have to be in Eugene ;) (Go Beavs lol) (Just friendly ribbing, no real offense meant of course)
Where? The Japanese restaurant has the best selection I've found down there.
The Stillhouse in Oregon City just south, about 20 to 30 minutes, of Portland great whiskey selection.
Old Gold in Portland is also a top tier Whiskey Bar!
You have to compare that rye with the Michters toasted barrel strength rye and the Michters 10yr rye.
Which one is better to try.. trying to get a bottle can't make up my mind..
@@briangrammer898 I have all three bottles and they are all amazing. Cant go wrong with any of them.
Have you had any of the Boss Hogs from WhistlePig? I'm a poor bastard, but someone gave me access to a bottle of it (V) for the night, and it changed my life. The best whiskey I've ever had.
Have you had it? And if so, would you still categorize it as something you aren't crazy about? I'd be so surprised if that *didn't* blow someone's mind.
I can still smell the Cavendish tobacco. Mmmm
Daniel, can you tell me what chill filtering does to a whisk(e)y in terms of taste and after it's drunk (yes that's appropriate grammar)? Like, does it get rid of the majority of the alcohol burn? You may have covered this topic in the past but I've watched the vast majority of your videos in the short amount of time I've subscribed to the channel. Thank you!
Has Daniel been everywhere? Each time Rex says a location he has either lived there or has a story about that place. Quick best story about Minnesota!
I already had my explosive bowel movement today so that kind of throws off my vault watching.
Always entertaining and some what informative 👍👌🤙
Well this was just pure gold to watch. 🤣
Ps. Lovecraft said the pronunciation of Cthulhu as Khlûl′-hloo and said that "the first syllable pronounced gutturally and very thickly. The u is about like that in full; and the first syllable is not unlike klul in sound, hence the h represents the guttural thickness."
Should I stay away from added flavored whiskeys.. since its in a classification by itself.. I'm drinking Jack and Jim trying to intensify the notes..I have even tried a little water.. still trying.. any suggestions..I have even bought whiskey that you guys have done reviews on.. the only thing I get is that sharp bite.. and a little fruit every now and then on others.. how can I stay consistent on tasting... should I not bounce around from different brands
Was this the girl that was on the cliff and that my friends is how you do a literal cliffhanger!
Have y'all done Woodford Rye before? Slap me if you have. But it's an anomaly of a rye for me, and I get pipe tobacco and dark cherry, almost cough-syrup notes. Give it a try.
Yes they did.. best way to check.. is Google videos.. type... whiskey vault %$^&*... your name of whiskey you want to watch... I hope this helps
@@briangrammer898 What is this "Google" you speak of?
Hey guys... Could you review Oban Little Bay please?
Rex, get it right. You would not have said you were about to taste a bourbon if you were still doing the blind tasting. You would say it was a Speyside. :-P
With regards to the hat crack... Daniel, you aren’t late to the game, you just wanted to let it age a little bit.
speaking of American Whiskey... Have you fellas tried Boondocks Cask Strength yet?
Why can't I find michter's American... EVER!?
If you live in an area where there's a Target store check them my local store has started to carry it that's as long as they sell alcohol.
KA TOO LOU
Since I don't have that michter's I shall toast you with the pre-revolutionary bourbon of theirs
Got a good one today
I hit pause said pull out pikesville rye
Drinking a glass of Michter's Rye next to a glass of Rittenhouse Rye makes me think that Michters isn't a heaven hill product, but I may be wrong.
Not First!
Holy hecking yes
I know that you two aren't necessarily the biggest Rye fans. Are you guys warming up to it, or is it still in the whiskey category of "meh"?
For me, it's still Meh. Rex is warming up.
@@WhiskeyVault Cool. At this point, what is it that you really don't like about Rye?
😶 Definitely not first
4:45 no applicable segue haha
The Spirit Monk[e]y is present.
Whats the cliff story?
Wow, I have no idea how to find that episode, so I will do my best to summarize. Multnomah Falls is a beautiful and dramatic waterfall about 40 minutes east of Portland and you can see it from the main highway that runs along the mighty Columbia River. (It is also pictured on the label of McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt) A bit of a hike up a steep, windy, narrow single-track rewards you with a view from the top of the waterfall. So Daniel and his fiance are hiking up and she has a little slip in an area where falling off the trail could lead to the long fall down. He makes a joke about how she is carrying the keys. She is not amused. On the way back down has another little slip as they are passing another couple AND THE OTHER GUY MAKES A JOKE about how he hopes Daniel has the keys.
@@courtneycason2261 hahaha oh man that's fantastic. If you can think of the episode please let me know.
kah-thoo-loo
This is a $300 bottle, and they're making fun of the name of the person who gave it to them. Hilarious stuff
Cthulu = Kaathulu
