I'm a new viewer that has stumbled into your Tribe. I've been drinking whisk(e)y randomly and indiscriminately for over 40 years without rhyme or reason. Some were good, some were bad, and many were meh. I had no clue, no idea, and no direction. Thanks to the infectious passion and friendliness of both of you, I now have a direction and an idea for beginning my whisk(e)y journey, (I'm still really pretty clueless though). For the first time ever I have 2 different whiskies in my posession - 4 Roses Single Barrel and a 10 year old Calumet. It's not much or all that fancy, but it's the start of the trip! Keep up doing gods work. This old curmudgeon needs your laughter and guidance!
Random thought but I just remembered how that, before discovering you guys, I was struggling to find independent, objective whisky reviews on RUclips. Like every channel I found never gave any bad reviews which made them lose all their credibility to me. The fact that you guys don’t shy away from ripping a whisky apart when you feel like it makes you the best!
I recently called upon the wisdom of the whiskey tribe via reddit. As a nubile drinker i have some rather large hurtles to overcome, alcohol being the first and largest. Based on what i have seen from your videos i was prepared for some help but how open your tribe was to me and helpful they were left me a little speechless. I just wanted to thank you for the amazing content and thank the tribe for starting me off on my whiskey escapades. I just finished my first bottle of monkey shoulder and im lookinf forward to the coming journey. Thanks all. Cheers!
The tribe recently helped me pick my next bottle which is Four Roses. I’m currently staring out the window waiting for the amazon delivery driver to arrive with it......
I have no idea why sourced has/had a bad rep. Some of the better whiskey that's coming out right now is sourced and personally... If it's good, I don't care if you or John doe made it. High West sources and blends incredibly well (in my opinion) and they're proud of it. People need to take notes and lean into this sourcing and blending world of whiskeys. It's a great place to be. Cheers guys!
We need more high quality sources. I've nothing against MGP, but we have enough monopoly problems and I don't want the big distillers controlling all the juice.
Sourcing get a bad rep because certain brands promote their "story" over the juice inside the bottle. They try to hide the fact that it's sourced. If you're up front and honest about where it's coming from... I'm with you. Let it speak for itself.
I have a somewhat dump bucket approach to my infinity bottle. Pretty much, if I own it, it's going in (and in some cases, even if I don't own it). That being said, I always taste the whiskey first and add in an amount based on the strength of its flavors, how much I like it, and the free space available in the bottle. If you tread carefully enough, you can get islay and rye to play nice with everything else, but I agree, it's difficult to say the least.
This is a long story, but it addresses how “long” the oak spire is effective. My wife and I were in Texas when we ran into Meagen Howard (marketing director for Oak & Eden) at a bar in Dallas. I was talking about Old Fashioneds with the bartender. She overheard our conversation and was kind enough to buy me a drink of Oak & Eden. I thought it was magical (the whiskey, and the fact that a very attractive woman bought me a drink at a bar with my wife right there). Later on our trip I bought two bottles of O&E rye and two of bourbon. I drank one of the bottles while still in Texas over the next week or so and gave one to my brother-in-law in Texas (he loved it). The other two bottles I shipped home to California. I sent one to my brother (he loved it) and gave one to my son-in-law. My son-in-law and I shared his bottle and it tasted far different, and better, than the original bottle I drank. My theory, is shipping it home stirred up the spire and released s,more goodness. I’m curious on your thoughts? Great channel gentlemen, keep up the good work.
At the launch party I first thought the spiral in the bottle seemed gimmicky or at best cool fiddly bits, but upon tasting I was actually quite impressed with the drinks, especially the bourbon. I'm hoping they start releasing out of state. Ironroot republic made my day last week when I found them in south Carolina for the first time.
I'm short on money these days, so I'm not spending much on whisky. As a substitute, I've used a 2 liter white oak barrel to age younger, budget whiskies in the past. Unfortunately, by barrel is both used up and has sprung a leak, so I decided to try an experiment. I took some dried oak wood from my property, cut it into small pieces, and charred the outside. I then put them in mason jars (I know that it can't breathe like a barrel and is no real substitute!) and filled it up with a bottom shelf scotch blend. The coolest thing here was that because it's in glass, I could see the whisky deepen in color dramatically in just a few weeks. I popped it open the other day and was pleasantly surprised with how much deeper and oakier the flavor was. It didn't magically convert my cheap scotch into a magical dram, but it was readily more drinkable and more complex than when it began. I'm interested in repeating the experiment after soaking some of the oak in a cab or port, and I suspect the particular flavor of my oak would suit bourbon better than scotch.
Rex: pour out a little of your infinity bottle into something else and then put some drops in there...... Daniel: here is a nerdy trick,,,,,pour out a little of your infinity bottle into something else and then put some drops in there
I have recently transitioned from drinking whisky to experiencing whisky. I am a fan of Irish whiskys and am looking to branch out and try something new any suggestions would be appreciated.
I bought my first couple of whiskies recently after I finally turned 21. I had been very interested in the world of whisk(e)y, and if it weren't for you two, I'd have been terribly lost.
I started my infinity bottle with a base of bulleit because I didn't care for it. It took over everything else I added. So I poured the last few drams of Laphroaig into the bottle and Bam, instantly drinkable.
Oak and Eden Rye and Spire was my favorite whiskey at the Crowded Barrel Launch Party (with exception to Eleanor of course). Looking forward to trying this offering.
The Eden & Oak Bourbon & Vine, a excellent review gentlemen, sounds delicious with that Cabernet note woven with the barrel bitter and normal bourbon notes. Ah but it is obtainable or a dream. Also good call on the choice of the Four Roses, always a great go to for me. The method acting in the entrance was quite hilarious and another try would be a worthy aspiration. Cheers to great drams and the best shenanigans!
It was one of those weeks where I happened to finish off five bottles of whisk(e)y (Rittenhouse Rye, Sazerac Rye, Oban 14, Mellow Corn, and Ardbeg 10) because they were almost empty. I also happened to notice that most of the Scotch in my liquor cabinet is from Islay (Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Bruichladdich), and I'd like to have representation from all six regions. Now that I have some open real estate in my liquor cabinet, what are some of your favorite single malt Scotch whiskies from each region?
I was actually going to write that exact question about going and getting my FIRST bottle. The recommendations say either Buffalo Trace or Monkey Shoulder. And now you two tipped the scale, ima go grab a bottle of Money Shoulder. Thanks for the help!
Oak and Eden is on my "eventual" list after watching your first video on them. I am digging these bourbons finished in different wine barrels so hopefully I can get my hands on the Bourbon and Vine!
For my infinity bottle I blend everything, I mean everything! from Bowmore to Woodford and Tomatin to Canada club plus a hand full of random Rye's. What I do is I use a 375ml (a little over 12oz)bottle. That way if it is little too crazy I don't have all that much of it to drink.
Do you ever put a unicorn whisky in your infinity bottle? Also Daniel, not listening is a Rex thing. He did mention testing the effect of a strong whisky on an infinity bottle at 7:40. Pay attention.
I just bought my second whisky the other day. My first was monkey shoulder lol and I just bought a pint of jim beam (just to try and mix with stuff) I think I like bourbon more, but I haven’t tried rye yet. What would be a good next step? I turned 21 a couple months ago so the alcohol is still a little overwhelming
The Spirit Monk[e]y noticed your heads are normal size in the thumbnail. But after being conditioned to seeing you with oversized heads, they just look unnaturally small.
So I know price varies widely but I think we need a system to score whiskey in terms of price against common, available whiskeys we can all probably get. I was thinking baking it around the johnny walker line. So instead of giving a dollar amount for a whiskey, say weather it is between black and green, or gold and platinum. That was we can see if it is comparatively priced in our area. For more expensive whiskeys we could even say it may be priced at blue and black combined for further accuracy.
I got to do a nice tasting with a rep from Oak & Eden at total wine, and they have a rye that is being regressed on March 1st that uses some kind of rum steeped shot American oak, and it is absolutely delicious😍😍 Keep and eye out for it!
Hard to remember, since it's been 50 years, but I think the first bottle I bought was Hiram Walker's Ten High Bourbon. Second was probably Canadian Club. (CC and Seven was where it was at in Ashtabula Ohio in 1969).
Hey guys love your show been binge watching for a week.....just womdering if you ever tried horses soldier IV heard good things about it but the only way to get it around here js order it want you opinion b4 I pay that shipping
My first bottle was monkey shoulder, and for second one i'm hoping it will land on ardbeg 10 or laphroaig 10.. depending on what can i get my hands on..
Surely they mean after two months the spire stops building the flavor but the whiskey still maintains the change? Otherwise these could be on the shelf at the store for two months before someone buys them and the spire wouldn’t make a difference?
Funny you guys should mention the Monkey Shoulder. I've been around the tribe for maybe a little over a week and just kung-fu'd my first bottle of it and yes it's awesome. Keep doing God's work!
As a Four Roses fan boy I like the recommendation but deep down inside I don't because I don't want my go to whiskey to be the next big thing and prices get out of hand. See the Weller craze.
Have you guys tried the Signatory Vintage 1997 Benrinnes 19? Would you remember your tasting notes and experience with it? I have a shop in Hawaii that currently has it in stock for $99. I know it's hard to find so I'm all ears.
@@Laimack Thanks. Just fyi, I just bought a SV 20yr Benrinnes cask #9406 ($99) and compared it to my SV 17yr Clynelish cask #7774 ($89) and the Clynelish blows it out of the water. The Ben was short with a light palate whereas the cly had a long sponge cake earth and waxy note that's hangs for days. A little steep but you can't beat experiencing it first hand.

There is a trio of us that like to drink bourbon. I seem to be the one that likes to share, so I guess that makes the other two mooches? Anyway, I've noticed a complete difference in how we like our Bourbons. They like the guzzle it straight up as fast as you can like doing shots. Then they complain about how it might burn or how it doesn't taste good because they can't do it in a shot without the throat burn. Apparently they like Jim Beam and the other one likes Jack Daniels which befuddles me. So I introduced them to Woodford Reserve and old Forester bottled in bond those kind of things and they turn their nose up at it. So how do I Enlighten them to enjoy it more?
Angels Envy the best bourbon I ever had,but can't get it anymore. However my favourite bourbons are, Woodford reserve, buffalo trace and four roses single barrel. so wish angels Envy was available were I live, please if anyone has spares, let me know.
Buffalo Trace is the winner from my point of view My short bottle history is more about Scotch then bourbon monkey shoulder, oban 14, Laphroaig and jura are the scotches I have drank by the bottle. Does anyone have an experience get around the corky liquor laws in Iowa? They are limiting things that are available to me
tallisker skye... but i seem to buy four roses single barre more often................ dont have a werry good selecton of american, but would like suggestions .................... by american i mean us, not canada mexico argentina brazil colombia peru panama sorry but im european i didnt recall your country, im drunk.... BTWit irrks me that you say american, not u or usa
Try this... Instead of crickets try a day where you call them Effing Bastards, almost in a knarly tone... "those brand reps that gave us whisky, those effing bastards...", "this brand rep gave me a bottle, what an effing bastard!" It's "effing" which I've even seen on news commentary shows. On TV in prime time I've heard "this is an effing mess" or some such thing. Some people spell it F-ing. Those money men are effing bastards. Crickets takes quite a bit of effort... you have to act (made up facial expression, and hold it...), someone has to edit in the crickets sounds and you have to do it long enough for effect, whereas you could just call the guy an effing bastard and move on. (Hope you like it, and if you do, any idea I pitch to you, just own it, it's yours. I give this stuff away.) Cheers!

When are you guys coming to have a drink with me in nyc? The brandy library has a table waiting!!!
Oh man.. I wish soon. The brandy library is amazing, and I still need to figure out an excuse to wear all those kickass patches you sent us :)
Whiskey Vault just let me know!!
Its funny how sounds from cricket, the animal, are used to signify silent uneventful moments, like cricket, the sport. :)
Second bottle of whiskey? 🤔 I think I was 18… maybe gentleman Jack? I was on rum and cokes back then.
Daniel just reminded me of that uncle who tells the same joke you just did because he just ain't listening.
Rex, you 100% said that before Dave. Don't worry, we know.
Angels Envy the best bourbon I ever had,but can't get it anymore. However my favourite bourbons are, Woodford reserve, buffalo trace and four roses single barrel. so wish angels Envy was available were I live, please if anyone has spares, let me know.
There are some really soft Rye whiskies that will work in an infinity bottle. Baby Saz works well. Willett does not! lol
Hmm, did Rex secretly become a Somm? His tasting notes have taken a very sommy turn lately. I think it may be affecting his mooch powers.
Possibly no age statement because it is still continuing to age until you drink it??
March is Daniel month
LOL Daniel didn't hear Rex, that makes a change. Also What's up with the 8043 views but only 492 likes?
Buffalo Trace is the winner from my point of view
My short bottle history is more about Scotch then bourbon monkey shoulder, oban 14, Laphroaig and jura are the scotches I have drank by the bottle.
Does anyone have an experience get around the corky liquor laws in Iowa? They are limiting things that are available to me
Since Rex is no longer a master mooch he should receive a somm test on a video. Tribe agree?
I wonder if Daniel pretends to not hear Rex just to stick it to him for never listening...
Rex literally just said that.....😂
how you stay healthy drinking so much?
Outside of shooting videos, our whisky consumption is pretty low comparatively.
@@WhiskeyVault Thanks for replying
@1:22 Charred French oak spiders?!
Always the first like. Never any contest. Bring back the bag pip intro. Don’t listen to what stupid Chad says.
That's a great way to get a nice fat shadow-ban
Hey now, I commented 5 seconds into the release but hit the like before I commented.

Whiskey Vault Clearly a joke....just like yesterday. Didn’t threaten me with a Shadow ban then. Why now?
@@WhiskeyVault I do appreciate a good set of pipes but think this wasn't meant for me...

3rd day rex go buy a 5 to 10 dollar whiskey and make Daniel drink it.
Is it just me or does Rex look like the hobo version of Vice's Shane Smith?
Things and stuff...

This is exactly why ralfy does not accept bottles from companies… god forbid you fellers go out and get the bottles with the RUclips gains

Try this... Instead of crickets try a day where you call them Effing Bastards, almost in a knarly tone... "those brand reps that gave us whisky, those effing bastards...", "this brand rep gave me a bottle, what an effing bastard!"
It's "effing" which I've even seen on news commentary shows.
I give this stuff away.)
Cheers!
