Question sr. If i buy one of this and i decide to unsubcribe from directv. Can i still use it for the apps feature. Like to access youtube Netflix etc. Or i need to keep dtv subscription to have access to the rest of apps.?
You can still access the Google operating system with the apps even if you do not have a DirecTV subscription. This also includes the Play store. However you are not able to access the Myfree DirecTV service for the free channels that DirecTV offers. We find this rather strange, but it is what it is at least for now.
@CFL-TECH I found one if this on a yard sale for $1, so I want to use it just as a stream stick for other apps. But I noticed when you set yours up, it asked you for directv logins. Was that just to access dtv?. Also I didn't come with power cord. Trying to use phone C cable and it says on the screen to use the original cable. I wanted to run this on a camper where only 12 volts are available. Do you know anything about the power supply options. By the way thanks for all your help.
@@jesseperez7253 the login for DirecTV is for the account to access their content. There is also a Google login required to access the Google apps. For $1 we would be careful on that one. We bought ours off of eBay and even there you need to be careful. We paid about $200.
@CFL-TECH just as a follow for others. I did call dtv. The fact that I bought it on a yard sale is not an issue, ( in some cases the device may not let you log out from old owners account) as soon as I log in with my direct tv stream account, the device will move over to my account. It's not account specific like satellite receivers are. However apps can not be accessed if I'm logged out directv account. In other words, you can not use this only as an apps stream device once logged out. You need an active dtv account. As far as power cord, this device needs to sense a more than 2 amp usb c adapter/ charger. So it's a little picky. Currently is being used flawlessly but I did have a directv stream account already.
Thanks for the additional information. That was what was meant about buying from a third party with being careful. One of the issues is the login with a previous sign in still on the account. DirecTV has a strangle hold on these devices. The reason being is that it was designed for customers to sign up for the DirecTV over Internet plan with the 2 year contract. Also you cannot access Myfree DirecTV with the device. This leaves a little sour taste. That makes sense about accessing the apps only with a sign in required. Someone can use the pay service for the month cancel and then have access to just the apps portion. DirecTV is going to make some money out of it regardless, even if it's just for one month of service for $80.
i have the device gemini and couldn’t installed it di followed up all the steps and it got stuck the screen on manage clients and add client and work with internet i think i made a bad mistake to add that new device to my all direct tv equipment
That is interesting to learn. It's too bad you are experiencing issues with it. There are of course different setups scenarios that could potentially cause an issue. If you received the Gemini device directly from DirecTV they should be able to offer support.
I been a Directv stream customer since it first came out with it back when AT&T own it . The Gemini box was given out for free back then with plenty of channels. Now , Directv change the unlimited plans so many times. Directv always sends me new equipment to tryouts. This Gemini air is awful to used with directv streaming. Gemini air used WiFi and constantly buffering and 2nd the Gemini air is little heavier and constantly have to be plugged in sometimes it will fall down. Gemini box can be connected to cat 5 or cat 6 for internet connection.
@michaelaguirre74 that is interesting about the Gemini Air with DirecTV stream. We've only experienced a few little hiccups with ours. It has lost connection very briefly a few times but overall it has worked well. Very true about the boxes with the option for Ethernet, which gives a more solid connection and also gets more out of the gateway/routers capability.
@@CFL-TECH I received Gemini air few years back for free to test them out and give them a test review. Gemini air date of Mfg: 12/14/2022. I haven’t used it since 2023 maybe Directv done some updates on since then… Just like the Gemini box was given to me for free as well to test them out before it never had any channels numbers on it just the programs prior to Gemini boxes for streaming only you would need a Apple TV , Roku, etc… back then it was At&T now… Directv streaming is amazing service it had few prices increase but not much maybe $20…. But Directv had some channels removed but always added more channels. HBO max was awesome back then because with your Directv streaming service you would get all HBO channels but not no more 😢.. The only thing I don’t like about the Gemini boxes is that there is no purchase control anyone with these boxes , Gemini air , Gemini box can order movies, or make changes, purchases without the account holder consent. If you are using Apple TV, Roku, Fire cube devices ,etc then nobody can make purchases on your account.
It may be a good device, but the price is a bit steep. Considering I have 3 TVs, each with a Roku 4K stick on each and get superb TV quality, each set a different brand; Panasonic/LG/Hisense U8 at a cost of a $110 for the 3 sticks ($219 for the Air). I cut the cord 13 months ago and each of the 3 Roku sticks have been working flawlessly with no issues. Got my money's worth there. I do have DTV Stream. I enjoy the freedom of canceling or putting the account on 'pause', with no added cost or penalties. This has worked out great for me. I have 'frozen' my account to take advantage of 'free trial' periods from the other BIG 3 services; Hulu/Fubo/YTTV to sample and compare. Out of the 4, DTV Stream seems to fit my needs. More sports (all college football games), better cloud DVR, unlimited, with all recordings deleted after 9 months). Up to 10, I believe, units can stream at same time. Along with 3 TV's we have 2 iphones, an IPad, and Mac usually gowing at the same time in our house. So, one DTV stream account allows all that.
@@papagcortellino5283 Wow! Thank you for the great setup details you have. You can't go wrong with the Roku 4K sticks with what you get for the cost. It sounds like you did get your money's worth. For sure the Gemini Air is a bit steep on the price tag. It's best if you love DirecTV stream and don't plan on going anywhere else. The DirecTV stream account flexibility is nice with pause and cancel options on the fly. The sports options are also arguably the best. Unfortunately the price increases will continue on and it'll be interesting to see what the future holds. The new My FREE DirecTV will also be interesting to see with how this affects their pay service.
If you buy a Gemini device from a third party there will not be a fee to use it with DirecTV stream. The cost of thee service will be what is listed for each plan such as Entertainment, Choice, Ultimate...etc. If you use it with DirecTV over Internet (this is a different service than DirecTV stream) There is monthly ARS fee. If you buy the device on your own and you don't use the DirecTV service you can still use it for the apps it offers due to it's a Google TV device. This would be an expensive Google TV device. I would also only buy from a reputable store. They are available on eBay and some have had issues. We were lucky and didn't have any.
The Gemini box and the dongle in the review are 4K capable. You can use Chromecast with DirecTV Stream and with the 3 4K channels they offer right now this would work also. Of course it starts with having a 4K capable TV.
For anything pertaining to account or login information contacting DirecTV stream or over their Internet version would be the best options. There are links in the description to their websites. They offer live chat and also support on social media such as on X.
Good observation on the heat. Freddie did notice it was a bit hotter than a Chromecast right next to it, but it didn't seem to be a concern. We'll see how it goes.
You said DirecTV stream and then DirecTV over the internet. DirecTV stream is run off the internet. I know because I have it. There's DirecTV stream and then there's DirecTV satellite. That's it.
For sure DirecTV can be confusing with their naming of services and plans over the last few years. That's correct in regards to using the Internet for DirecTV Stream. There is also a DirecTV over Internet plan which requires a 2 year commitment and the ARS Fee applies to use the Gemini device. With DirecTV Stream you can use your own device and no 2 year commitment. It certainly can be confusing. Thank you for bringing this up so we can explain. 😉 We did a video on this comparison.
