      I think he philosophized himself into a slow alcoholic death because he just saw reality too damn strong. It’s harsh. Reality that is…..This why so much blind devotion to a god or this technology cocoon we all run around in is so strong in humans. The human ego cannot fathom its own demise and insignificance.

      @Greg Jacques : Isn't that essentially the point @North Island Bushcraft was indeed asserting? Just in a less explicit fashion: To my mind at least, the opening commenter made his/her comment in very skillful, appropriate keeping with Watts' ingenious, oxymoronic way of articulation. Watts' style was always characteristically multi - layered and what appeares upon first reading/hearing is not usually what it reveales itself to be upon closer inspection......Just a thought and absolutely no offence intended, so please don't think I'm digging you out or being an ass; I'm acutely aware I'm an irrelevant nobody whose opinion is pretty much irrelevant: Also that my opinion may very well be totally wrong!💙.

    Paradox . He's teaching the very essence of what he's teaching, instead of embodying it. If you're here and admiring, you're searching based on your ego. By searching for the teaching of letting go, you're engaging in the search instead of just being and allowing life to take you where you desire to go. Teaching itself is the Paradox. True teaching is observing. And when you observe yourself fully you embody you're own truth and that's how you practice what Alan is teaching.

    Letting go of the ego is so hard. It amazes me that there are people who've been able to do it.

    • @igo9481
      @igo9481 3 года назад +14

      Letting nature take it's course is about as laid back an attitude a mind can have toward life. There's actually nothing hard about it. The more you try to do something about the situation the further away you get from achieving your goal

      @BitterTast3 3 года назад +7

      @@igo9481 I understand the concept, but when you're in deep, you "try without trying". I try even if I'm not aware that that's what I'm doing. The ego has such a grip on me that I'm set up for much suffering in the future. That's what I mean by hard.

      You can’t let go of the ego. No one has ever been able to do it because it doesn’t exist, it’s a mind made concept. Through presence and awareness of the mind can you be at peace

      @@geeforce3891 how do you define something as existing? (I agree that ego is not something that can be disposed of, but I also think when people say it doesnt exist they are making an equally invalid mistake)

    This video was taken about the time that I first heard his lectures broadcast on local radio here in Portland Oregon, [as simulcast from San Francisco,] while I was attending art college.
    It wasn't until just about a year ago that I first realized so many of his lectures have now been re-released in RUclips. It's so great to hear him again. And especially seeing him speaking in this video.
    Thank you for posting this.

    I found his teachings back in 2000 I'm so Glad some of you have found him who are of the 80s, I don't feel to lonely or lost anymore just glad many are waking with his teachings I appreciate this man so much but I did payed some suffering from others not understanding me because people thought I was cookoo! Back in early 2000 this man served as a great missionary who has been given all the way through these times. Greatful!

      My marriage is failing and my 4 children loath me, despite my best efforts at being kind and good. I found Alan when it started going wrong a few years ago but now realize it doesn't really matter as it's all a game. We all have opportunity to come back and play another role if we wish. Next time I hope to do better.

    I could listen to his voice 24/7. 🙌 I had multiple NDE's and your entire personality is like layered on. You are nothing like you think you are, so if there are aspects of yourself that you hate, just remember you chose them to experience life as this person you are in this lifetime.
    He is the guru in this situation, not trying to emulate him, just wanted everyone to know that the person you know yourself as - is fleeting and to embrace yourself lest that self go away completely once you cross over.
    Also, in 2016 I communicated and joined with, made friends with my Ego Self. It was profound and worth doing. My life shifted exponentially for the better.
