Imho Watts was one of the most enlightened humans to ever walk Earth. He's speaking directly into your spirit. Was he perfect? No. But that's part of what makes him so fascinating. I'd like to see Mark work with a producer to make a movie about this man. It'd blow A Beautiful Mind out of the water.
We have but one spiritual teacher. It is within us. We must weigh the input upon the balance of our inner wisdom. People, circumstances, relationship dynamics, nature, all of these cause you to introspect, from which we gain insight and understanding. It's simply source in whatever other, connecting with source in self. The realization is inward.
A 1971 television recording - when was the last time anything like this was on television? i wouldn't hate television so much if they could get some depth like this in it every now and then
Ive given this some thought. It seems to be part of the game. The game of God not wanting to know God is God. If everyone were constantly being reminding of this the game would lose its zest. I think its also pretty funny how these realizations are also hidden in psychedelic drugs. These drugs which just so happen to be illegal. That way people who realize they are God get called crazy...by themselves. I catch glimpses of it the incredible skill it must have taken to design this perfect game of hide and seek we play with ourselves.
Without flowers there are no bee's, and when there are no bee's there are no flowers...They really are just one organism. Makes so much sense. Love this guy.
Thank u Mark for sharing. Your dad is the most inspirational man I've ever listened to!! I listen to him ALL the time, everywhere I and when going to sleep. Thank u so much for sharing him with me. Wish I could've met him, but feel so much like I know him through his tapes. Take care. 💞
his ability of articualting the exetremely abstract concept which is almost ungraspable with the words was just exceptional he literally almost capture the TAO or buddha nature with human language i don't know how he did that but it's still remarkable his lecture is like the perfect harmoy of strict logic and poem how could both mix together? LOL thank you alan
He actually uses correct grammar and simple vocabulary, and changes the intonation in his voice in a more conversational manner. It's nice to listen to.
I enjoy revisiting this one! I am curious and fascinated by Alan's humble contemplation of nature in this video. A true philosopher under a bit of substance to assist with the awe of it all.
"We live in the Age of Focus; the Afterlife is a period of transcendent being" ~~cc "The ego is nothing other than the focus of conscious attention" ~~Alan Watts
This man is one of the many great minds out there. We focus too much on the stresses of becoming a "functional member of society". Simply from what I've seen, the way we work our world and the way our minds work makes it seem as if the idea of "functioning in society" is mostly based on making people go through the motions. We don't indulge ourselves enough in what makes us happy.
Meditative peace and interconnection. Those fresh sensations of being alive. Watt's voice warming the atmosphere. Simple reflections containing a deeper truth. Thanks for sharing this pearl.
I have watched all four parts of this along with as many other Alan Watts videos that I can find and I have to say, listening to him makes me think, makes me smile and makes me cry because everything just seems so obvious and beautiful. I wish he were still in the flesh today, I would very much like to meet him.
He speaks in a way that hits the listener profoundly while keeping his explanations simple so it is easy to relate. Beautifully spoken words. In sum: he is telling us to cultivate awareness and to step out of our egos and to develop a quiet mind ("Things become complicated only when we think about them"), so that way we can observe reality for what it truly is rather than be constrained by our personality and its mechanisms. Once we are free and aware, we notice everything around us and the world becomes full of all kinds of colors and shapes that we previously missed. You can tell Mr. Watts is aware of the subtle changes of his own psyche, and thus, the world around him. Very poetic and elegantly spoken. Maybe some time in the near future we will have more figures like him in the world, ones who speak the truth...
Mark, thank you for making sure all of this is accessible to all of us. Truly life changing insight. I am so grateful. I’ve been exploring a lot of this content on The Waking Up app and I couldn’t be more pleased. He’s no doubt influenced my own podcast. So, thank you.
I watched this on TV in 1971 and loved it. And then I bought his book "The Book", and loved it too. (And now I need to find Part 2 of this Conversation with Myself".
Bill Hicks came pretty close. Check out these books about his life and work American Scream: the Bill Hicks story Love all the people He was an absolutely brilliant mind. A true thinker, philosopher & also a great mystic, transcending the normal human mind. My favorite philosopher. Indeed, timeless wisdom Thanks for sharing...
I have to say thank you Alan Watts. Thank you RUclips for all the knowledge I can possibly grasp. Thank you markwatts02 and all other followers of great philosophers like Watts
Thanks for sharing. It has to be tough having a father who is larger than life. Nobody can ever live up to the myth, but your fathers writing certainly reached me at a pivotal point in my life. It would have been nice to meet him.
I often listen to a lecture or, more often, a piece of a lecture to to to...idk ground me? Take me full circle? When I'm searching for an answer. Almost always I find myself starting at the wrong point and asking the wrong question. Wgmhen I let go of all the chatter and just let things be. I don't have to think about it. It's already there staring me in the soul. My overthinking is the densest fog
A Watts piece I'd never yet seen! Beautifully done, too. Thank you, Mark. It's a typically enchanting, thoughtful bit of time with a great mind and spirit.
Bravo. I've read quite a lot of people's comments on some of the Watts video's on here. I would often think, "their trying to hard." But you sir, understand the crux of Alan Watts. It was very good for me to read your two posts. I thank you.
This is wonderful! I was first introduced to Alan in 68 when these videos where not available just his books and I read all I could find! It is so nice to see and hear him in all these videos available now. Thank you~
In the distant future Alan Watts will have his time as one of the world's most exceptional philosophers. His ability to articulate complex human, religious, social and abstract ideas was remarkable. We all need to sit back from our daily grind to absorb and appreciate what we have right at this very moment.
Thank You, Mark, for making this available. We appear to come from No-Thing and return to No-Thing. Alan expresses the wiggly bit that's in the middle so beautifully.
me too. After listening to many of these lectures/talks and becoming increasingly interested in buddhism and daoism I find myself frequenting the local arboretum. Peace.
thank you for this wonderful video, Watts is so full of wisdom and knowledge we could all use a dose of it every now and then to get us back on track. Much love everyone! Namaste
Years before this video, I had a long conversation with Alan Watts about our LSD experiences (LSD was legal in California then). I read his books back then, and they influenced my spiritual progress in a good way. He looked very different then, but time leaves us all looking different. The voice is the same, and the inspiration is always there.
@savagecabage maybe 233,060 people (more as people continue to watch the video) felt enlightened/inspired after the first video and thusly felt compelled to move into a different plane on consciousness which did not involve the subsequent videos. How wonderful is it that there are videos such as this so readily available. Bringing light to our consciousness and our ability to shift this filter of the mind.
Brilliant philosophy, lovely voice, Zen coming out of Zen - Perfect listening and watching - I love it. Thanks again and again. Cool. Very cool. Zenpoet 123
If there such a thing as an ego, then your words are created by it. There is no contest or duel for first place for intelligence. From what you say you have an extensive education and you should proud of this. You sound like a science based scholar and you need to make the leap in none linear/ abstract thinking to appreciate what he is saying.
Mark Watts, your father was a wonderful human being, lightyears ahead of his time. I am sad that he is not alive right now, but it natures way, his essence still lives. :)

Will I could visualize Christoph Waltz playing Alan Watts in a fascinating movie.
This would be epic
If he had been perfect he wouldn't have been human and had he tried to be perfect he wouldn't have been so outstanding.
I'm sure that he's going to read your comment and do it. I'm grateful for your comment.
@@Colby_Purrins801 Honestly I feel like Aidan Gillen would be the perfect casting for this role.
