    No this of course isn't Eddie Van Halen's father. But Roy Smeck did influence Les Paul and Chuck Berry's fingertapping, which is where Eddie Van Halen got the idea from. Roy Smeck also played his instruments behind his back and with his teeth 50 years before Hendrix did, and Roy Clark modeled his multi-instrumental virtuoso comedy act heavily on Roy Smeck's. Smeck isn't well known today primarily because his work was in Vaudeville, and by the time television came around, he was considered old and dated, even though Les Paul was doing the same routines.

      @FailsAndLuck 3 года назад +2

      Wow! What is voice leading?

    • @havokmusicinc
      @havokmusicinc 3 года назад +6

      @@FailsAndLuck voice leading is structuring your chord voicings in such a way that they best illustrate your musical idea. The most utilitarian and simple (and old-fashioned) voice leading minimizes note movements, so notes only move by a half or whole step: so instead of spelling your G7 - C cadence as [G B D F] [C E G] all in root position with a bunch of leaps, you could spell the G7 chord as [B D F G] and it sounds a whole lot smoother. For a practical guitarist, think of it as minimizing the distances your fingers have to move between two chords - [02213x]-[x0222x] are some voicings of E7 - A on guitar that voice lead smoothly.
      Now voice leading isn't always simple like that, sometimes if you have a specific chord melody in mind you're gonna want to voice lead in such a way that best reinforces your melody, even if the voicings you use aren't the most smooth or utilitarian.
