Router looks nice. You mentioned buying a 2nd NAS to back up your first. Personally I'd recommend against that. I have mine run incremental backup twice a month to Backblaze B2, encrypted as it leaves, about 4TB currently runs like 15 a month. And in addition, I manually run FreeFileSync to an external drive kept offline twice a month. It's robust and cost effective
For me paying for a subscripiotn service would be very expensive, with the shear amount of data to backup over 20TB. Currently I have 2 DAS's that back up the NAS via synology's software. So I actually have most the drives I need just need NAS. So it depends on data needs. A second NAS would be an ease of life thing. So I can set it to turn on a couple times a month, backup my main NAS then turn off. Rather than manually turning on the DAS and manually setting the backup to run.

Hi (I used google translate). I havent tried going laptop to desktop but I have done Laptop to NAS via wifi. its about 100MB/s. I seem to remember once I got around 200MB/s but it has not been repeatable. hope this helps.
Merlin is a third party firmware that is compatible with some ASUS routers (this one included). I run Merlin on this router and it allows you to run additional programs on the router that isn’t available on the stock firmware that comes pre installed. I run Skynet (firewall enhancement and ip blocker, Diversion adblocker, Yazi an enhanced guest network and a few others). If you want to know how to install it (pretty easy) you can go to Eclipse Reviews page here on RUclips and he has great videos showing how to install Merlin and how to access the AMTM menu to add various programs on the router. Most people that use Merlin never go back to the stock firmware. It’s like comparing checkers to chess.
Would I be able to run one of the 10G ports to a 2.5g switch so my devices on the switch get 2.5? I have Fios 2g connection to the wan but don’t know how to get it out to my compatible devices
Hi! I have superb working mesh system as AX11000+4 pcs. AX92U since about 2 years. Now had an idea to change to AXE16000 + the same 4 AX92U. Purchased AXE16000. It is so buggy. Still can not make aimesh. Have two problems. First AXE16000 connects with AX92 as node only at 2,4ghz. But must use as backhaul second one 5ghz. Second problem when it connects with AX92 it also show Weak signal even if the distance between the is 1 meter. Think to send 16000 back to the shop and wait unitl Asus will fix all issues with firmware. Usually it takes 1-2 years for them. Do not understand how Asus can launch such buggy unit since 8 months after presentation. They make customers as beta testers free of charge.
Ive had a similar air mesh problem with is saying 2.4 band rather than 5ghz. and is saying the signal was weak despite the routers siting literally right next to each other.
I can say it definitely does 2.5gb, 5gb in not 100% sure. In another video I run a speed test to my NAS after upgrading it to a 10gbe card and have a 5gbe adapter for my laptop. I got something like 300-350MB/s. So based on numbers Ive heard about that is High but not unheard of for 2.5gbe adapters. But my guess is yes it does do 5gb, because to get those speeds with a 2.5gbe adapter everything needs to be perfect. I doubt I have that.
Yes it has the option to combine all 4 into one. so it will use the router to optimize what band to place each networked item. or you can separate each band and log devices in manually you want on each. thats what I did.
ROG light can be set constant or even off. or rainbow if you really want. :) Yes I'm still using it. Range seams about 50 feet for 5Ghz and 80ft for 2.5GHz but I havent scientifically tested. My house is about 45feet in length and I can walk outside about another 1/2 length of the house before I loose wifi. router is in the middle. also a note 1.5 wall in the way before outside space.
1:42 you say 2 of the gigabit ports can be aggregated together to form a 2 gig? confused the box says 10g ports. Also, will this work with a 5gb internet? can the internet be plugged into one of those 10gb wan ports?
2 of the LAN 1 gig ports can be aggregated. I thing it can also aggregate WAN by converting one of the LAN to WAN. Aggregation is when you combine 2 LAN ports to act like 1. devices on both ends need to support this feature. So yes it has 10gig ports and 1 gig ports. and it works with 5gb LAN and 2.5gig lan. I think one of the 10gig can act like a WAN. you might need to adjust a setting on the controls menu.

Kind of depends on your home shape. I have a town house. 2 rooms wide and 4-5 rooms long. (like average bedroom side) sorry cant remember actual dimensions. 2200 sqft. Has a 2nd floor. The router covers that space and 20 feet outside my house in both front and back. Placement is right in the middle of the house. So estimated range (50-70 feet (with average walls) across 2 rooms walls. So in my case its perfect for in the house. If I need more coverage outside I would need a mesh setup. Hope this give you some idea.
Note sure what you mean. Like the Node range or the number of nodes you can have. According to Asus the more nodes you piggy back off of each other the slower speeds get. So like router to Node 1 and Node 1 to Node 2. Node 2 will be very slow If you mean like quantity. Asus as far as i know has not listed a maximum. You can certainly set up a Node Right next to your main router and set up the Node as a guest Network. It will be in a different Mode option when setting it up. Instead of an access point it will be the other option. an AP (access Point) uses your main routers wifi settings. as far as how far the wifi will go with the node that is dependent on the Node. it will have the same range as when / if it operated as the main router. hope one of these answered your question. If I didnt get it please clarify and Ill try to answer.
edit: if you have any specific questions I can try to answer them. Just ask away. hmm. I'm not really sure how to simplify. I'm a fairly basic user. So I just ran though the set up wizard. Created my Networks (1 for each wifi band) and that was it. everything else is plug and play. If you want to use advance features or activate things in the Asus Wifi software just select those options. If your unsure about what they do. Do what i usually do. Google. It actually is really easy to get it going. and the extras are there for those that want or need them. This is a router for homes with lots of wifi gadgets or that need 10gig ports.
Yes. I'm not sure if the PS5 has anything more than a 1gig port though, so it would be a bit of a waste. but the 10gig ports can work at 1, 2.5 and probably 5gig speeds.
Its as good as any gaming router. or really any router depending on your home network. It isnt necessary. The main reason to get this router is because you Need the 10gig ports for your home network. It is a very good router though.
Hi!!! Does anyone knows if the 10GbE ports on the GT-AXE16000 router are multi-gig or only 10GbE? I want to use those ports for a 2.5G computer and NAS. Thank you!!!
@@computer-tech-more OMG Thank you so much for your answer, I've been trying yo get a proper answer everywhere. I want to use de 1Gbps LAN ports for TVs and other simple things, and the 10GbE LAN port for my computer that has a 2.5 Gbps port and my 2.5Gbps NAS. Thank you
I was also concerned about this, because as much I I like and wanna stick with Asus for my network frame, I heard horror stories about how their first 10gbE-equipped router came out with a single, strict 10GbE port --> demoted down to only 1GbE connectivity with no in-between workarounds. I'm not sure what the aftermath of that is, if Asus hopefully was able to fix that through a fw upgrade ... anyway it was for that reason that I've chosen for now to stick with my ROG GT-AX11000 - it's a solid beast, but because it only has a single 2.5 GbE WAN port, THIS 16000 would be absolutely my next upgrade option (as of this day). Until I upgrade again, to maximize speed with my QNAP TS-673A NAS, I had to buy a SODOLA 2.5 GbE switch ($170 CDN, Amazon) to make the ports on my laptop, tower pc, NAS, and my router, all feel 'fulfilled' 😁
@@Luiscofield. not sure why folks are so stuck on the 10GE port but if what you want is a 10G connection from your desktop to your NAS which is what I also have, they save your self the 10GB port used on the AP or switch and just hard wire the cable from your nas directly to your desktop. Then you can always use a simple 1G connection from your desktop to the AP or switch. You will have less latency, faster speeds and will not suck up the backplane usage of the AP or switch with this traffic
the router will work with what ever internet speed you have. Note it will not speed up your internet, but anything connected in your own LAN/wifi network in your home will operate at the max speed the router & device are capable off. if this makes sense. you could in theory use the router without outside internet all together and just use it as a home network, connecting devices at home but not to the internet.
You need to find in your country which ISP provider has 500-1000mb internet speeds. Otherwise this router is not recommend it's only for the speeds I mentioned anything below that is pointless on this router. Meaning with 100mb of maximum speed of your ISP a cheaper router that is about 6 times cheaper then this router that is too expensive. If you buy this router which can handle 1 to 10 Gigabit internet fiber speed and your internet ISP hits only 100mb. It would be like going for the best of the best gaming router on the planet with the slowest internet speed of your country... Don't do that to yourself, trust me it's really a huge waste of money and you won't get any huge advantage of this router :(
@@winnb4968 Overall agree with your statement. the only exception would be if they wanted in all in one solution to get 10gig LAN / home network speeds even though their internet speed would be "slow". Though at this point it probably would be cheaper to get a high speed switch / router to interconnect the home network then connect that to a router that is best suited for the internet speeds available. I will note I am not an expert at this. I would find a guide online before attempting.
The latest firmware for ASUS has support for Wireguard now. So you can go to the VPN tab turn in the server mode then go to other and Wireguard is there. Your router is now the VPN server when you set it up. The great thing about it is it is free to use and you aren’t using a 3rd party to protect your data. All of your traffic using the wireguard app on your phone, ipad or whatever device you have that supports the Wireguard app runs all of your data back to your router to be encrypted no matter where you are in the world and it is pretty fast for a VPN. It can slow down the overall speed of the router but i am not so much concerned about speed versus security especially away from home on potentially unsecured networks.

@@computer-tech-more I have 120TB's so yes I have a primary and backup NAS, people that talk about backing up to the cloud are simple users which is fine...but once your above 25TB and in the 120TB's like me the speed and cost of storing data dont come close to a secondary backup nas

Hi (I used google translate). I havent tried going laptop to desktop but I have done Laptop to NAS via wifi. its about 100MB/s. I seem to remember once I got around 200MB/s but it has not been repeatable.
hope this helps.
May I ask what the Merlin Firmware is please? I just got the AXE11000 and have seen users talk about it as well. Thanks.
Its an operation system for Routers that you can apparently load on to it. sorry I dont know details on how. Or much beyond this.
I have Fios 2g connection to the wan but don’t know how to get it out to my compatible devices
yes. you can use and Lan port with any lan but will be limited to the slowest ones speed.
Hey had a question that I have had a hard time getting answered. Does the 10 Gbe ports also do 2.5Gb, 5Gb?
I can say it definitely does 2.5gb, 5gb in not 100% sure. In another video I run a speed test to my NAS after upgrading it to a 10gbe card and have a 5gbe adapter for my laptop. I got something like 300-350MB/s. So based on numbers Ive heard about that is High but not unheard of for 2.5gbe adapters. But my guess is yes it does do 5gb, because to get those speeds with a 2.5gbe adapter everything needs to be perfect. I doubt I have that.

well. A direct connection with a cable is best but for most casual gamers wifi with a good router is fine. This router is over kill for most cases.
Does the smart connect combine all 4 bands on this router?
Yes it has the option to combine all 4 into one. so it will use the router to optimize what band to place each networked item.
or you can separate each band and log devices in manually you want on each. thats what I did.
what modem are you using?

Hi are you still using it how has it been wifi range ect also can the rog light be put to one still colour and not blink
ROG light can be set constant or even off. or rainbow if you really want. :)
Yes I'm still using it. Range seams about 50 feet for 5Ghz and 80ft for 2.5GHz but I havent scientifically tested. My house is about 45feet in length and I can walk outside about another 1/2 length of the house before I loose wifi. router is in the middle.

How your PC/laptop connects to GT-AX16000 ? My two laptops don't see 6Ghz band. I have Intel AX210NGW wifi cards
I connect via 5GHz band. or using a cable.
I as well dont have anything that uses 6Ghz yet.
@@computer-tech-more I have two laptops capable of wifi 6E , got on both of them Intel AX210 with newest drivers 170.0.32. None of them can see 6Ghz band network, it only works fine on my S21 Ultra.

For the card I would completely uninstall the drivers and then force it to install the latest one you downloaded.
For the Router, just check settings and what its names.

how is the range on this. is good enough to just get this or get a mesh wifi system
Whats the limit on nodes? I might want to create a guest network
Note sure what you mean. Like the Node range or the number of nodes you can have.
According to Asus the more nodes you piggy back off of each other the slower speeds get. So like router to Node 1 and Node 1 to Node 2. Node 2 will be very slow
If you mean like quantity.
Does only TP-Link have 8 LAN ports?
Om I have no idea I just have this router.
I am interested in this router, but you mentioned allot of technical options I do not understand. A more basic review would be great.
edit: if you have any specific questions I can try to answer them.
@Money Talks . . . . . yes. If you need its capabilities. ie the 10gig ports.
Can you connect a ps5 using the duel 10gig ports?
Yes. I'm not sure if the PS5 has anything more than a 1gig port though, so it would be a bit of a waste. but the 10gig ports can work at 1, 2.5 and probably 5gig speeds.
I love ASUS ROG user interface. Other brands look very ugly !!
Yes. its relatively intuitive.

Is it good for online gaming in fps games?
Its as good as any gaming router. or really any router depending on your home network. It isnt necessary. The main reason to get this router is because you Need the 10gig ports for your home network.
It is a very good router though.
Looks better if you turn it upside down. 😂5:05

Hi!!! Does anyone knows if the 10GbE ports on the GT-AXE16000 router are multi-gig or only 10GbE? I want to use those ports for a 2.5G computer and NAS. Thank you!!!
Yes. I am using it with a 5gig usb adapter. It should also work with 2.5gig Ethernet.
Can you setup vlans with it?
I'm not sure. sorry.
Hi. This router is unmanaged. Just the Switch Cisco or Dell can do managed layer 3 with 10gb ports
Does it can do without my internet cause in my country max is 100mb
the router will work with what ever internet speed you have.

Install Merlin firmware instead of using stock firmware 👍
does it need a modem
Yes you will need a separate Modem, this is just a router.
can you connect vpn service?
yes. you would connect via the device your using not the router though. not sure if there is a way for the router to auto go to a vpn.
