  • A look at the types of high-speed train operating in the Netherlands.
    List of shots:
    0:00 Eurostar entering HSL Zuid north of Rotterdam
    0:15 Eurostar departing Rotterdam Central Station
    0:49 Eurostar passing Lage Zwaluwe at 209 km/h
    1:09 Eurostar passing Lage Zwaluwe at 287 km/h
    1:31 Thalys departing Rotterdam Central Station
    2:15 Thalys passing Noorderkempen (Belgium) at 300 km/h
    2:26 Thalys passing Lage Zwaluwe at 292 km/h
    2:36 Thalys passing Lage Zwaluwe at 300 km/h with horn
    2:52 Thalys passing Noorderkempen (Belgium) at 262 km/h
    3:08 ICE departing Utrecht Central Station
    3:43 ICE passing Maarssen at 120 km/h.
    Two of the shots are actually filmed in Belgium, but the same high speed line does continue across the border into the Netherlands.
    Music is a thing I made.

      Yes, Lage Zwaluwe is hilarious. It's in the middle of nowhere but a great place to film trains given the variety of train types. When I was there there were more people filming trains than people actually waiting for a train.
      The IC Brussel stops in Noorderkempen because the station exists and the IC is the only non-high-speed service. Before the ICB was rerouted onto the HSL, NMBS ran a shuttle service from Antwerpen Centraal to Noorderkempen which was of course a huge waste of money. Stopping the IC is much cheaper.
      The real question is whether the station should have been built in the first place.

    • @OntarioTrafficMan
      @OntarioTrafficMan  3 года назад +5

      Bedankt! Van de video meet ik precies wanneer de voorkant en achterkant van de trein en gegeven punt passeren (bv een paal of iets). De snelheid is de lengte van de trein (volgens Wikipedia) verdeeld door het tijdverschil tussen de voorkant en achterkant van de trein. Met treinen van 100+ meter en een video met 30 beelden per seconde kan het best nauwkeurig zijn.

    • @OntarioTrafficMan
      @OntarioTrafficMan  3 года назад

      South of Rotterdam, the high speed line switches to left-side running because in Belgium trains drive on the left. There is a grade separation in Barendrecht which swaps the tracks over each other.

    The high speed rail service is SO bad in Netherlands! Especially if you look price-value/time...A Thalys should be able to do Amsterdam-Brussels in 60/70 min. But since the Belgians don't bother to build High speed track between Brussels and the Dutch border it takes 1:35h. And you pay €80 , for which half the distance you go at

    • @OntarioTrafficMan
      @OntarioTrafficMan  3 года назад +9

      Amsterdam - Brussels is 214 km, and the Thalys does it in 1:53, which is an average speed of 114 km/h. That is indeed slower than many other high speed services, but still faster than any NS intercity train, despite the slow travel through Amsterdam. If you look only between Schiphol Airport and Brussels, the Thalys averages 126 km/h, which is way faster than any NS train service. And between Schiphol and Paris the train averages 166 km/h which is considerably above the maximum speed of IC trains.
      Of the 214 km from Amsterdam to Brussels, 130 km is on 300 km/h high speed lines, including 36 km on the Belgian side of the border. And while it's true that the trains travel

With such poor travel times you just cannot charge 2x (IC Brussels) and 3x (Thalys) the normal fare rate! By the way the Thalys only stops in Antwerp (IC Brussels stops everywhere ). The av. speed (without stops ) of Thalys between Antwerp and Brussels is 93kmh! ( 59km in 38min). Even IC Amersfoort-Zwolle is faster!

      @@allws9683 I really don't care about speed, I tend to use a train because it is convenient, brings me right into the city centre. I never understood why people fly into an airport reasonably far away from Paris. But hey, you might be one who travels on a whim, not me, I travel because I have to reach a destination. Whining about 10 miles faster doesn't save on overall time.

      Overall they need to build more highspeed tracks since the thalys only stops in Antwerp. Its crazy that the train is being slowed down so much. It should be doing 300 from the moment it leaves Amsterdam until Antwerp and the after Antwerp full speed to Paris. I hope they do it soon both Belgians and Dutch

      To be fair, it's not just DB. It's all train operators in Germany. There are also tons of delays on trains operated by Abellio(NS), Keolis, RRX(National Express), etc. I think it's a problem more with the infrastructure and dispatching than the train operators themselves.
