This is the first Supertramp I heard, and it's one of my favourites too. It's held down all the way through. They never really let it get away. It's a good sound, never tried to sort out what it all meant.

This is defiantly the Old Grey Whistle Test footage you can tell by the studio no set just a bare studio Owing to technical issues during the show's early years, and the need to ensure performances were controlled, the bands often recorded the instrumental tracks the day before. The vocals were then performed live, "99 percent" of the time. After 1973, the show changed to an entirely live format.

This was before autotune came put so it was pure talent. They used the instruments they had on hand. This is just pure plain and simple great song and great talent went into this song along with so many others from the era.
Love the deep dive on this one and learning about the cardboard boxes being used as drums and wine gasses for a glass harp. Supertramp were Super creative!
Supertramp had a great sound from the 70s. Back when musicians hard to work really hard to be good. No computer effects back then. They two lead singers & writers and were never the same after Roger left the group, somethime after their 1979 album, Breakfast in America. They were great live. One of their best albums was "Live In Paris".
They did squeeze in one final studio album, "Famous Last Words," in 1982. It was a half-hearted effort and it's been said both writers kept their good stuff for their first respective post-split albums.
Great live song that sounded fantastic. 2 other songs an album later when I became aware and a fan of Supertramp was Give a Little Bit, covered later by the Buffalo based band The Goo Goo Dolls, and Even In The Quietest Moments which was the title song to their 1976 album. Breakfast In America was their biggest and overall a great great album as well!
The audio is the studio version -- It's just too perfect to be Live (yes, I know they're brilliant, but lets not go crazy, here). You can tell it's not Live from the repeating clip of the close-up of his hands playing keyboard at the very end. Also, on at least one very brief occasion, Rodger's vocals don't match what his mouth is doing. But other than those two minor points, the integration with the Live video was very nicely done! ;-]
Correct me If I am wrong but I think that this performance is from "The Old Grey Whstle Test", The best rock programe on British tv untill they binned live performance in favour of miming which in my opinion killed the show. By the way, in case you didn't realise it, this was miming, which is a shame because they were excellent live act.
It's a good old song. It looks like it is from The Top of the Pop TV show. From what I can tell it seems like a really good lip sync. That show required that concession from what I have seen. If you want to see an actual live performance from that era, check out their performance of "Rudy" on the British TV, "The Old Grey Whistle Test". I think it was from 1971, so a really young ST. Check it out for yourselves. It is a ton of fun and insanely tight. I promise you will love it. 😀
This song never moved the needle for me. Ended up skipping to your review, couldn't make it through the whole thing. It was a hit from the Paris live album. Played too much for my taste and quickly got sick of it.

Kind of a distinctive sound for Supertramp at the time. Not a lot of other groups were doing that.
