So I'm a HUGE DirecTVNow fan! Timing is everything. I took advantage of a few promotions they had back in January. They offered the "Go Big" package ($60) for the "Live a Little" price ($35) AND if you paid for 3 months in advance, you rec'd a 32GB Apple TV! Oh, and I called and was told, that price is not going to change! Initially, there was constant freezing, had to get out of the app and go back in but I haven't had any problems like that in a long time. I have SlingTV and wanted to compare. Although SlingTV has more on demand selections, because of the promo, I have double the channels for the same price and my local sports channel. I'm not too worried about a DVR, I cut the cord almost two years ago and haven't looked back. They do say DVR is in their future. Honestly, I'm leaning towards cancelling SlingTV. The only app I could sign in to when asked for a "service provider" was Watch ESPN and it froze all the time. One thing's for sure, I'll NEVER have cable tv again!

I've tried them all and I've settled on PS Vue. It's the only service that offers DVR, the only service that offers up to 5 streams and it connects to a ton of provider apps. Sling is pretty comparable but DirecTV Now is lousy as it offers only a handful of apps that you can use your credentials through.
That's not to say that Vue is perfect. Last Friday night I wanted to watch a show on HBO that was streaming at the time and it's set as one of my saved shows but I wasn't able to rewind to the beginning while it was still recording. This is something I do often with DirecTV especially with content on ABC or NBC so that I can be far enough back that I can skip commercials. That is of course until I catch up with real time and have to suffer through it from there.
However, it's not a deal breaker as most everything my family and I watch is on demand and/or via a DVR recording.
My biggest problem with Sling was going to the main screen stopped everything. I also didn't like that some channels could be paused/rewound and others couldn't. DirecTV Now is basically a joke. It has constant buffering issues, the UI is WAY too simplified and, as you pointed out, it doesn't follow the Apple design rules for rewinding and fast forwarding.
The good news is that consumers are finally in the driver's seat again thanks to all of these options that don't require a contract.

yep yep you make some great points. unfort no perfect service yet unfortunately. maybe this youtube tv will be good, but then again i'm not holding my breath since it will probably miss a couple channels here and there, guess we'll see

Mark Langston Dtvnow is what I have. Psvue doesn't even have a good guide. And it has no Viacom channels. It offers less channels than sling, yet it's more expensive. Dtvnow Guide is JUST like a regular cable guide, which is what I Love! And I love that it's simplified. That just means it's simple to use. I've had no problems with dtvnow. You say it's a joke but it offers the most channels out of the three. Yeah it sucks you can only stream on two devices but they have said that they're working on making it to where you can stream on more than two devices. Anyways I love Dtvnow and I highly recommend it to ANYONE Who is looking to switch.

@Krazy Muzik PlayStation Vue has a guide on its mobile formats. I have it on my iPad & iPhone. There's no guide on the Roku app, which I agree, is a bit of a pain in the ass. Hopefully, as they improve service, the guide will become a part of the viewing experience. Here's hoping...

I wouldn't say DTV Now is a joke. It's just too new. I'm sure it'll improve as time goes on. But, for now, I'm digging the PlayStation Vue.

Im also using PS Vue because DVR for all my favorite shows is awesome and the quality is great. The biggest reason I got it was because it was the only that offered Comcast sports network so I could watch all my Warriors game!

Directv Now is pretty cool live TV streaming service for people that want a no contract service. In my opinion DTV Now is better because they have by far more channel availability than the other live TV streaming services, specifically if you like football and sports overall hands down DTV Now is the best. Also, if you have AT&T for your cell phones under their New Unlimited Plans, you get an additional discount of $15 off the DTV Now packages for life. This to me sounds like a no brainer. I literally paying $30 a month for TV services. Pretty awesome.

As of Jan. 2019 Sling TV is the best if you combine it with an AirTV device. The Sling software is just far ahead of the competition and it's the cheapest service. Directv Now has the best overall channel lineup but the software needs improvement.

  • @joenhre
    @joenhre 7 лет назад +8

I think they all suck right now. They still have a long way to go. Vue & Sling still lack too many basic channels while Directv Now lacks basic features such as DVR.
I will wait until these services mature a little more before any of them will be able to replace my current TV provider. Saving money is great but at the cost of content, features and overall usability the savings doesn't outweigh all the negatives.

So with just the basic internet service which sucks.. 40.00 bucks and then with any of these services your reviewing, expect to pay an additional 40.00 bucks..
So I'm right back at 80.00 fucking dollars... Grrr..
    Heres my Set up...
    1. HD antenna(Free local Hd channels)
    2. $50.00 HS Internet
    3. My Favorite Media player or Fork... (You know what I'm talking about.)
I lose on sports.. but we have to make sacrifices to save... But "to his, his own"
Good luck to all, to who wish to cut the cord..

Just get a TRULLY unlimited (no caps!) Simple Mobile prepaid phone plan for $50/mo and you can stream all you want, with DirectTVNow.com for $35/mo you get all the normal cable channels, all for a reasonable total cost.
Yes it's $85 total with tax included, no hidden fees, which you would have spent or a lot more on the cable crooks, but at least it's completely mobile and the price doesn't fluctuate.
You get about 40Mbps down/20Mbps up speed, and I even turned it into a hotspot to run a bunch of other devices off of the phone. A happy camper here. :)

I tried the direct tv now this past wknd, and also it has all the channels, it's so slow and glitchy.. it freezes at times for a second or so and it literally takes anywhere from 3 to 10 seconds for the picture to load up after u change channels...I know three other ppl who say the same thing so I know it's not my Internet speeds.... yeah man cable is expensive! We have directv at our house and they are the worst. I started at $30 a month but after 6 months promotion was up the price just kept going up and we are almost at $80 monthly now. Big rip off and then when I call them the other day to tell them the satellite isn't getting a signal they said they would have to send a tech out to check it out and that the cost is $99 when the signal loss is not even our fault and there hasn't been any bad weather either. I told them I would rather cancel than pay the $99 and they said well your under a 2 year contract with a year left so if you cancel it's $15 to cancel and $20 a month for the remaining year until your contract is done. Yeah im so done with them. Great review video I'm so going with one of these services once I get out of my directv nightmare.

John Rivera Directv changed once AT&T took over. They got greedy. I've been with them for almost 7 years. A few months ago they. said my bill would be $50 NOPE try $90+. Called back the agent said I should just admit I can't afford my plan. I called again and lowered the plan lost 40 channels and was told the bill is $65. That bill was $89. Called again and was told by lowering my plan all I saved was 2 f**king $ to lose 40 channels!!!Same thing that happened to you happened to me with Comcast. Bill started at $33 went up to $100. Kept calling to ask for a lower bill All I got was attitude. Cut them off on Friday. The next Monday they called me my plan + HBO Cinemax for $29 including the boxes. I told them you see that hole up you a** take you plan and shove it up there. I called them for 6 months for a lower bill and all I got was attitude. I'm so done with cable. All that extra $$ my son to watch Nick ain't worth it. I think I'll try PlayStation vue with Chromecast. I'm a RUclips junkie anyways.

John Rivera Most people’s savings strategy goes like this. I’m gonna sit home on the weekend and not go out anymore to save money. So, I cancelled cable and all my movie channels and sold my Xbox. I’m gonna keep my Range Rover and it’s $700/mo payment and $300/mo gas bill to commute to work. Because I don’t drive my range on the weekend, I can save a few miles and it won’t depreciate as much. To entertain myself, I will rewatch my blu ray movies that I paid $20-$25 per movie that I only viewed once or twice. And people gladly bought 4 new releases per month. That’s a $100/mo. to watch 4 movies. Do you know how many trips to the theater or what type of tv package $100 can afford you.

I liked the review. I personally had all of them, and I'm probably saying a lot in this post....but U did overlook just 1 of the BIGGEST downsides to having PS Vue. It doesn't have any Viacom channels (Mtv, BET, CC, Vh1, Nick, etc). The only 2 reasons as to why I have PS Vue currently is because it has NBA TV & the NFL Network included + about 60 channels for an estimated $35. To make up for losing Viceland, I just added it as an app. Desus & Mero have full episodes on their RUclips channel 😉

My wife and I were debating whether to cancel cable and just make due with services like these and Netflix but then we discovered the HDHomerun Prime. Its a network tuner for your cable subscription via a cable card. Long story short, it saved us about 50 or 60 bucks because we can now use devices we already have (Apple TV, Nvidia Shield, Amazon Fire TV ext) to watch everything we subscribe to in HD and 5.1 audio.

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  7 лет назад

oh interesting i never heard of that, its just like a 3rd party cable box? you didn't have any issue with getting the cable card from your cable provider then i guess, its been a long time since i had one of those. does it have dvr?

    • @Gmen2010champs
      @Gmen2010champs 7 лет назад

techfreshness Yeah its made by a small company called SiliconDust. Here's a link www.amazon.com/SiliconDust-HDHomeRun-PRIME-Cable-3-Tuner/dp/B004HKIB6E/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1488555469&sr=1-1&keywords=hdhomerun+prime.
As far as the cable card, i had no issue getting one but the issue was trying to get it activated correctly. If its not activated correctly, you wont see all the channels you subscribe to. So I called until i got a rep that knows cable cards because 95% of the reps have no idea a cable card exist it seems lol.
And yes it does have DVR but its in beta right now but its very stable. Ive had no issues in the 7 months ive been using it. It does cost 60 bucks to get access to the beta but after its out of beta, you get a free year and then its 60 bucks a year after that i think.

After streaming from Prime, RUclips TV, Netflix, Pluto TV, Hulu and
Sling, I'd say RUclips and Netflix are the best bang for the buck. Sling
buffers so much and has so much fluff make it the worse by far. Also,
the $$$ value for what you get is poor for Sling compared to YT &
Netflix. I throw in Prime as an add on for the other benefits with
Amazon. Bottom line get YT with Prime. Avoid Sling. Netflix is a
    necessary luxury.

i am getting rid of directv, its all bullshit, theres more infommercial, ad and pay per view channels than anything. I have studied all the alternatives and am now using sling tv, with directv for tv and centurylink for internet combined on one bill it was 120 dollars a month, now i use sling tv and hughesnet together and my total bills are 70 a month, slingtv has every channel we love without all the bs, and for everything else i watch ihave hundreds of other tv and movie sites to watch where the shit is free. Im set for 70 a month

We changed from DirecTV on four TV's for about $200 per month to Playstation VUE because they had the Golf Channel. We are paying about $55 per month for 5 TVs. We are in the Dallas Market so we also get local channels. There are no channels we watched on DirecTV that we don'y get on the Playstation Vue. The only problem we have is it stops and starts a lot. Watching football in unbearable. This is not a result of our internet, because Netflix and other apps come in perfectly on multiple TVs at the same time. Hopefully Playstation Vue will get their act together and fix this..

Ps vue got rid of the select who is vueing at start up. Ive tried out all 3. PS Vue is by far the best. Watch up to 5 tvs at once. Directv allows 2. Sling allows 4 if you get the orange and blue package. Id say PS vue has best picture quality in my opinion.

I cut the cord and found out I was actually paying more. Cox hooked me up with 220 channels 100 mbps internet and Home phone. for $35.00 more than I was paying for Internet alone. why would I pay $50 or $60 for a lagging streaming TV. Cable companies are starting to combat these streaming services. For one thing Cox informed me they were going to start enforcing the 1 terabyte limit. After that you pay $10.00 for each 500 gb. I was at 1.25 terabyte and I don't do downloading. that was just 2 members of the family streaming PSVUE and Hulu and Netflix.

I have been researching this too much and I am not sure what system I should go with because I will be leaving cable. I live in Mass. What do you recommend to watch new and past shows of a series? Probably would need a dvr also. And I am not sure between the Apple Tv, Amazon Firestick or Roku. I was thinking to have both Playstation Vue and Sling Tv to cover the channels we want. These are the channels that are important to us: NBC, Food Network, Travel Channel, Syfy, Disney XD, Cooking Channel, History Channel, PBS, Discovery Family, Destination America and Animal Planet.

A Screen that big and that much technology meant to entertain you means you have no social life. Depending on the day I may watch either 2 to 10 hours of TV a day. Weekends are sports and weekdays are some reruns ~ 2 hours.
I get 40-50 channels over the air and never look at the majority of them. OTA picture quality is better than cable, satellite or fiber. I get the best picture quality I have seen and I have a 15 year old flat screen tube; perfect 1080i and the audio is better because Sony put kickass sound systems in those big boxes. I would never pay for anything but just Fios again. I signed up for phone/internet bundle and there will be no streaming here for additional money.

I Highly recommend cutting the cord!
Sling TV is outstanding at $25 monthly
    vs
DirecTV over $100 monthly + box & HD fees!
We got the 2017 Sharp Aquos ROKU TV
and a Sling TV Blue subscription.
We cut the DirecTV cord & are luvin' every minute of it!
    Sling TV rocks.
We inserted a 16g USB drive & it allows us to pause
rewind fast forward up to 90 minutes.
    AWESOME!
This new ROKU formatted Aquos TV is a must for
Home Theater fans like us that gotta' have HD
& surround sound (640 PCM Digital Stereo encoded with 5.1 matrix.).
$25 a month provides our home with exact same channels
as we had with DirecTV + a few extra sports channels(Score!).
We are 100% glad to be rid of satellite TV.
    GO SLING TVer's GO!

    • @1mykalfury
      @1mykalfury 7 лет назад

      Hi Tech,
      1st off, I don't have a ROKU Box.
My TV's a Sharp Aquos ROKU TV, so the feature
      is built into the set.
Very nifty operating system to be sure.
      Now, to answer your questions....
Yes Sling TV offers rev/ff/rew but not on every channel.
      Example:
EPIX Channels all allow the pause rewind fforward feature.
I haven't inventoried every channel in my Blue pak yet for those
features, but, l found some do, some don't.
DVR Cloud feature is coming soon to Sling TV & that'll change everything!
Now, I'm not sure how the Orange pak runs?
But for $25 the Blue channel pak is unbeatable.
      ~peace

Getting an Apple TV for my living room. The mirroring is the main reason why-since I do the majority of my work, surfing, etc. on my iPad. I think the Sling TV format is very nice, as far as guide layout and navigation-better than PlayStation Vue, imo. The lack of DVR recording, single-source streams and video quality when watching sports (30 fps) were deal breakers for me, though I'm quite sure that Sling will fix that in the future.

We have to have DVR or full On Demand and it has to be multi-room, all 4 major networks, 4 simultaneous steams minimum and Tennis Channel Live .. any suggestions?
Nice video .. "but' .. I'm not ready for a turd sandwich pseudo cable. Unfortunately, our cable TV bill (2 phone lines, 100/100 Mbps, and Cable with 12 channel Multi-room DVR) exceeds $300/mo with every HD channel you can think of and add to that every Premium channel.
I was considering DirecTV .. we must have Tennis Channel Live (we also have Tennis Channel on Demand). Streaming doesn't concern me .. we have unlimited data and also have Netflix, HULU, RUclips Red and Amazon.

We've been Vue customers since April of 2017. I'm really impressed with the visual quality of streaming. We gave up Dish satellite for two main reasons. 1) We hated when we have bad weather, the signal either drops when we desperately need weather info or it gets covered in snow, and cleaning it isn't fun when it's 15 feet above your head. 2) We weren't about to pay $80.02/month. Yeah, I had channels on there that i loved, such as the Weather Channel, but we've since gotten weather radios. I love that our bill was slashed by nearly half with Vue. I'm considering Directv Now because I get TWC and some other channels that Vue doesn't have yet. Vue is still just barely younger than toddler stage, but come on. Directv Now already has TWC and History Channel.

hey texan, great comment. lots of good points there. yeah i've actually switched to vue myself and been happy. i recently just tried dtv now but i did not like the interface at all and the picture quality seemed slightly slightly worse. i wish vue was $35 bucks though, its worth 40, but 35 makes it a great value. have you considered seeing if there was a twc or history channel app you could use to supplement?

We got the Roku Premiere+ special with Sling a couple weeks ago. I must say, compared to Amazon tv (and your Apple tv), I really like Roku's newest box. Remote is really nice, no spindle, it's like an actual remote for a regular cable box. We also have an Amazon tv stick, and dang the remote is hard to work with compared to all the others IMO. We'll probably upgrade to Vue, as it seems to be the most 'bang for your buck with sports stations, discovery channels, including animal planet, which Sling doesn't have. Great video man, nice production.

Even if I pay 70 for internet and 70 for a plan it's still cheaper, the problem, all sports, good dvr and channel loss, the problem of cutting the cord is direct TV still gets my money from dtvn, and dish gets it from sling so y can't I just get that plan from them in the first place withe the dvr capabilities. I've been doing Vue for about a month, (used to be a DirecTV subscriber for 7 years but switched after they refused to lower my bill). Vue is okay but has some annoyances for me. #1 is it crashes fairly often. I'll be watching TV and it just stops. I think it might be my internet though as I am watching through an Invidia Shield and when I back out the Shield won't connect to anything. I restart my Shield and all is well. Doesn't bother me that much but it really bugs my wife and she just wants something simple like DirecTV used to be. #2 I don't like that you can't just remove the channels you don't watch from the guide. It puts your "My Channels" first but all the other channels are still there at the far right. #3 I don't like that the channels are listed alphabetically instead of by channel number. But I guess there aren't really channel numbers via the internet. #4 We find that a lot of times the last minute or so of a TV show is cut off when you watch via DVR.

For an update since this video was made, Directv Now has since released a cloud DVR. I used to be a Sling subscriber and I can tell you I liked the Sling cloud DVR better. I made the switch to Ditrctv Now though back when they first launched because they offered the Go Big package at an introductory price of $35 a month and Dtv Now offers way more sports channels and my local ABC, CBS & FOX stations so I get my local college sports. And since I'm a huge college football fan, that's a must (when I was on Sling I used an antenna for my local stations but because I'm so far from the towers my signal would cut out at times). Sling overs 50 hours of cloud DVR for $5 a month (since I was a beta tester I was rewarded with 100 hours of cloud DVR for free. Yeah, very nice). That's also another mark against the Dtv Now cloud DVR, currently you only get 20 hours a month and they raised the service $5 a month since the release of the DVR (and I was a beta tester for the cloud DVR and get the same lame 20 hours. Trust me, I've been in thier ear about this one numerous times). Over all I'm very satisfied with Directv Now for what I want and what I have to pay. As the guy in the video stated, if your just looking for a few good channels to watch Sling tv is great also.

hey shawn, thanks for the comment, there have been a bunch of changes for sure since this vid. i actually was using psvue for awhile and was liking that much better and preferred the UI over dtv, which was giving me issues with my login for some reason. then they raised their prices 5 bucks so i cancelled it. i can't believe psvue would already be looking to raise their prices already. so now i don't use anything, as i don't need it that bad, at 45 bucks a month i'm back up to regular cable prices, they really pissed me off. glad you are liking the dtv though, sounds like its working at for you at least1

I"m dumping Sony Vue and just keeping netflix, hulu, and Amazon. I found Vue VERY often cut off the last few moments of the tv shows that I saved in DVR, which REALLY SUCKED. With Hulu I don't get that problem. Cheers.

Thanks for some great information on cutting, I appreciate your effort at putting this together. Much respect for that huge TV man cave as well!
