That's very kind of you! But most people don't do it! When you tell someone you don't understand, they'll probably speak louder, but at the same speed and using the same words... When the problem is probably that they're speaking too fast, or have used vocabulary you don't understand!
@@ForDutch-id9yu I'm learning French and Italian. The Italians are enormously appreciative of my efforts, and go out of their way to complement me despite my limited skills. They will usually make an effort to slow down and speak clearly. My French is much better, but they frequently curl their lips and roll their eyes when I make mistakes. Even if you ask, they will rarely slow down!
Lexie, I love your idea! I gently encourage you to reexamine the word “focus.” The long O sound exists in both English and French, does it not? It startled the heck out of me every time until I realized what you really meant.
Merci for this! Your steps make sense. You described me listening to podcasts and french tv shows only understanding a few words. I love the show Dix Pour Cent. What show would you suggest for beginners? New sub!😊
Thank you! To be honest, TV shows aren't really for beginners because the actors speak at a normal pace, which is fast, they use everyday language, which includes slang and sound changes.... That doesn't mean you shouldn't watch them, just that they're difficult for beginners! But practice makes perfect! Personally, I like “Lupin” and “Plan Coeur” on Netflix.
Great suggestions Lexie, thanks. In addition to listening and writing what was spoken, i also read the final transcription out loud, allowing me to do all 4 communication methods, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Cheers, Tom

These are excellent tips! Thank you so much. I'd have just one small suggestion: be careful with the pronunciation of "focus" in English. The "o" must sound like the "eau" in French as in "beau". The danger in English is that the "o" acquires a schwa sound, which would then render it as "f**ck us" - not the outcome you want. Many thanks again for these excellent suggestions!
