I feel like Sydney has the acting capabilities to be in a horror movie. The way she screams, the way she gets angry, the way she cries, it’s PERFECT for horror.
yesss i could totally see her being the victim or the killer herself because she tends to be scarily crazy in her roles and has that face that’s perfect for feminine rage
but the thing is if she was in a horror she would most likely fall into the 'final girl' trope of being that blonde babysitter who is dealing with the paranormal activity or murder. if she was to play in a horror she it would need some sort of realistic plot either based on true events or a true story.

Also there is a huge difference in how she appears in Suicide Squad vs Birds of Prey. Virtually none of the women in Birds of Prey are over sexualized where as Suicide Squad is liberal in the sexualization of Harley, and it definitely has something to do with the directors of those films.

I feel this is very true for Scarlett Johansson. She has a great potential for drama, but she built her whole career on being a blonde bombshell and even when she acts in dramatic roles it is seen as sexy (her voice acting in Her, for example). As a result, no one mentions her as a great award-worthy actress, even though she is. Marriage Story was the first movie in which I actually thought they toned down her looks to make her acting shine more.
Scarlett is a child actress though, she's been around for a very long time and broke into the industry before she was either blonde or a bombshell. She did dramatic roles from the start but I can see where you're coming from

Sydney's small role in The Handmaids Tale is still my favorite of hers. She clearly has the potential to play authentic and heartbreaking roles that have no ties to her body or her looks.
I think it was more than a small role. At least to me. It really symbolized the importance of putting Gilead and their values before everything. Including the life of your own child, once they were no longer living in your house. Her death was horrific and 100% at the hands of her own father. It was one of the most devastating things I’ve watched on the show personally. She was still a child, in my eyes. She was what 16? She tried so much to be the perfect person and wife, and all she did was fall in love and go to her parents for safety. Something we should all be able to do at that age, especially if we are hiding from the government.

Sydney is easily one of the best actors on Euphoria, only beat by Zendaya tbh, and people only talk about her breasts and it is so god damn frustrating. I also think that's why her character is so viscerally hated in season 2 even though she's clearly in an abusive relationship. Because she is first and foremost eye candy for the camera.

Margot robbie and Charlize Theron are my favorite examples. Charlize in Monster in particular is shellshocking. Primarily because she cared SO MUCH about the authenticity and the story of her role.
Sydney Sweeney is a great actress, but she needs to be cast in a role that doesn't center on her looks. I've seen her in other films where her character is better explored, and she really does a great job. She has a lot of potential, and her next role needs to be something with value instead of just being eye candy.
Amanda Seyfried is less well known in part because she has also been trying to avoid that bombshell trope since Mean Girls. I think she could probably get more roles and money plying bimbos but seems to take sort of weird ones instead

Brie Larson's role as Ma in Room became her breakout role that rightfully got her numerous accolades after being in the industry for twenty-something years. While Larson wasn't a blonde bombshell, her role in the movie was "ugly", gritty, raw, and vulnerable. I felt that it finally got her recognized as a serious actor and opened doors for her in Hollywood.

I hated her brooding, how rude, entitled and “girl boss” coded she was. I hate girl boss female characters that are stoic, emotionless, have no obstacles/struggle or connection etc Take a look at Vi from Arcane and Captain Marvel. Both have mentors, both are hot headed and serious characters, but the difference is when we saw Carol training and her mentor tells her she is hot headed and struggles with her emotions, we don’t really see her being that way we are just told. But when VI’s mentor tells her she fights first than thinks, the audience actually recognized that flaw BEFORE he verbally puts it out there. We see how she easily gets into brawls with the secondary characters of the show, how easy it is for her to throw punches. Contrast to her sister who’s more practical, into building machines and is a tinker. So when Vi gets older and becomes both a fighter and a thinker, we see the blatantly obvious character arc. Captain Marvek however? “I have nothing to prove to you.” Yeaaa, I didn’t feel that scene. If I didn’t see clips of Brie Larson acting in Room I would’ve thought she couldn’t act because there were no character nuances with Captain Marvel or impeccable story writing. Just rushed movie that assassinated the greatest mystery in the mcu which was how Nick Fury lost his eye to a freaking cat. Also she’s indestructible. What’s her flaw?? What’s her struggle?? Ugh ew

I can’t imagine how hard it must’ve been doing your acting job, whether by choice or being coerced into doing the scenes and then experiencing a backlash from the public. You’re right that the K actresses we mainly see today did not have to go nude, maybe because of talent, connections, and visuals. I was thinking of Lim Ji-yeon (the villain from The Glory) as an example of a k actress who had to go nude for her role in Obsessed when she was a rookie. She garnered attention from that role and some awards, and while it did help her to get recognized, I just read that she also faced criticism for that role. Kim Go-eun and Esom also had the same experience as Lim Ji-yeon. After reading articles about the K actresses who did those scenes, I now realize how harsher the Korean netizens are towards them. While doing those scenes may have helped the actresses garner attention and awards to support their careers, their audience will still give them harsh criticism no matter how much talent or skill they provide. Which is hard, to be honest. I don’t want actresses, in general, to feel the pressure of thinking that they need to do it and have the stress of anticipating a backlash.
I disagree. Not all beautiful actresses had to do nude scenes to get ahead. I can name many from now and previous decades gone that have never done nude scenes. If a story or a scene requires a nude scene or a sex scene than thats fine. And an actress can always say no when she reads in the script there's a sex scene, the male actors too. Most 18 certificate or R rated movies or tv shows its usually cause theres a nude/sex scene or very gory violence ... you know what you are getting into when you watch a movie like that and people - men and women, do like to watch movies like that. Men like to watch beautiful women in movies and tv shows etc and women like to watch attractive men in movies and tv shows etc. Take a movie like Terminator 1984, there's a sex scene in that and thats actually a very important part of the story. Same with Basic Instinct and other romantic thrillers, a nude or sex scene is required and how they film it its down to the director ... it could be shown with no nudity and fillmed quickly or have it go on for a couple minutes and show nudity. It all depends on what story you are telling and if the scene requires it and if the director wants to do a scene like that. Some directors may want to show the sex scene and some may skip past that, show the 2 characters kissing in bed then starting to take each others clothes off then cut to an hour later where they are both asleep in bed or cut to the next morning of them waking up. Actors and actresses can always turn down that movie or tv show if they dont want to do a nude/sex scene etc. If you think about it, 1930s-1960's movies there was either none or very, very little nudity back then and women would have had no say in the matter in those times. Seems like 1970s onwards there as loads of nudity, mainly in horror movies and in the 80s and thrillers in the 90s. But I also get your take and the person who made this video, that beautiful women get type cast as the sex symbol or sexpot etc. And beautiful blondes get labelled as the dumb blone which is stupid. But being typecast as a certain character, this could be a good thing or a bad thing depending how you see it. Its true for male actors as well but not as much for actresses. But its also the same for film-makers and writers .... you make a movie and it does really well you get labelled or typecast as a genre film-maker and will most likely only get work in that genre. Unless you are a big name like Nolan, Spielberg, Cameron, Tarantino ... you can make any movie you want and get financed. Its all about money and ratings. Actors can always turn down roles but an actor/actress just starting out, you should never turn down paid work.
I'm sure Hollywood has issues, but you're also being very selective with your examples. There are at least as many actresses who have never done nudity, but still became famous and popular. ...such as Julia Roberts, Keira Knightley, Jennifer Garner, Megan Fox, Mila Kunis, Emma Watson, Anna Kendrick etc. - you can google dozens of clickbait-lists of such people. The common denominator is probably that they've all been offered a 'shortcut' to fame at some point, and could've built their careers faster if they'd gone nude. Sidney Sweeney appears to have taken that route. She's not bad, but she kinda used nudity to kickstart her career.

I didn’t recognize Sydney Sweeny’s acting range until I saw her role in Sharp Objects. It was gut-wrenching, and hard to watch. But it’s my favorite thing Sydney has done. I really hope she has more serious roles in the future, she’s got more to show I feel.
I am incredibly biased re: Margot Robbie as I grew up with her in neighbours and have watched her meteoric rise to fame. It is not coincidence that these amazing female actors end up becoming producers to gain better control of their film roles.
Cameron Diaz for Being John Malkovich is a great example for that. Everyone was so in awe of that transformation. It's actually amazing how transformable one's looks are. Whether it's a wig, no make up, fake contact lens or just more plain clothes.
As for the excess of the nude scenes- I feel like the problem lies not just in one group. The producers, undeniably people in the power, are simply behaving like businessmen, they demand nudity because it's a very cheap and easy way to get attention (and therefore money) from the public. The actors agree to do the nude scenes, because they know not only it will help their career, but also that if they don't agree, most likely someone else will do that, so they often choose to sacrifice their well-being and dignity in order to get the role. But let's not forget about us, viewers- we also have a sort of a power, as we are the source of the moviemakers' income. If the producers were more ambitious and less greedy, if there was a solidarity between actors and if the viewers didn't show so much interest in the nude scenes- it all could be different. But I am afraid it is absolutely unrealistic.
I think there is beginning to be a turn-around with Gen Z viewers (nicknamed puriteens online) who are against all the nudity and gratuitous sex. Sam Levinaon has gotten a lot of backlash for S2 of Euphoria and the Idol.

her character in euphoria is complex, it's just about playing a role not focused on being pretty, not having scenes directed to make you look the most flattering all the time with the perfect little aesthetic makeup and just allowing her to show raw emotions without having to make it look cute. being naked totally falls under the umbrella but i do think there's more to it and i do think not all nudity is sexual in films. it all just depends on the choices taken by the director.
@@viola5281i think you bring up a good point because Cassie had the potential to be a complex character but Sam Levinson would rather relegate her to just another girl with daddy issues. when you really think about it, who is Cassie aside from her problems with men? has she ever even had a storyline that didn’t revolve around her sexuality in some way? not really. and the same can be said for a lot of Euphoria’s characters. they don’t really have any interests, hobbies or goals. their trauma is their only real identity. that’s why Sam Levinson’s writing/shows have come under such scrutiny lately. his shows are entertaining and gorgeous cinematically but that’s about it. Rue is easily the most complex character but that’s because Sam himself struggled with addiction. he only knows how to write for what he experienced, which is why characters like Cassie feel a bit shallow and oversimplified. if Sydney truly wants to play complex characters she’s going to need to work for a production that actually hires good writers.
Margot Robbie is one my favorite actresses. She can go from a crazy Harley Quinn with runny makeup and messy pigtails to a Barbie with perfect style and hot pink heels. And she still looks stunning, all while being able to play both roles so well.

I think in the context of the entertainment and film industry, it is considered more "real" or serious to look less conventually attractive, especially in an industry that is hyper-critical of people's appearances and perceived talent. This video mentions that it is discussing the entertainment industry and a small portion of this industry. The narrator even says this isn't the only way to be taken seriously, but it is a way to break a mold and possibly reshape that actress' direction in the industry. I think the reality of being less than conventually attractive does not make someone "real" or it doesn't make their actions or behaviors seem more serious in real life. If anything, being more attractive in real life would probably do that for some people. But, I think this conversation is important in the context of the industry we're discussing. This video isn't about everyday people; it's about a narrow and bias industry that already has a negative perception of women, regardless of how they look.
Studies have already shown that beautiful people are taken more seriously in any context. The issue is that actors don't know how to say "no." Honestly though, if the role is advertised as having nudity, I don't really care. You beat out numerous other actors who wouldn't do nudity.

I agree with this 100%. I genuinely believe Sam had Sydney do those nudity and sex scenes for his own pleasure, and because he knew how many guys would watch the show just to see Sydney naked. It also creeps me out that although Sam didn’t write the show, he based the characters through his own life experiences…..I think for Sydney’s role or Cassie, Sam based her off of girls in his old high school who were attractive, had big boobs, and who he wanted to have sex with but couldn’t….so he took on the position in Euphoria and made Cassie do those nudity scenes for his own pleasure. Halle Berry played an “ugly role” in Jungle Fever, directed by Spike Lee and released in 1991. She played a crackhead and she struggled to get the part due to her good looks
the thing about Margot with I, Tonya (and most of her films now) is she made those films and roles happen. She and her husband created the production company that produced those movies. she's so underrated in how business savvy she is. It's one of things i respect most about her. She could've easily just taken the vapid viral attention she got from the wolf of wall street and kept doing whatever came her way from other studios, but the very next year after the release of the wolf of street, she founded her production company and now that studio has multiple academy award nominated films (and will probably get another one this year for Barbie). If Sydney Sweeney could maybe go this route with her own production company, she could completely turn her career around and shape it into whatever she wants it to be. Even Charlize created her own production company and her first film produced was Monster. Missing from these conversations for a lot of these "ugly" female roles is how the pretty blonde actresses made those roles happen in the first place (Charlize, Margot, Reese Witherspoon, etc).

i think that actually, women of color cannot benefit from the "ugly role" "bombshell" dichonomy. women of color don't necessarily play "bombshell roles" because we are expected to be beautiful in Hollywood to play any role! because of this beauty standard of exclusion (white, skinny, blonde) halle berry and mariah carey (who must be beautiful to maintain their status) aren't necessarily "ugly" when they portray "ugly" roles. since many women of color (who are not white, skinny, or blonde) are assumed to be "ugly" anyway, they portray "ugly" roles not to be taken seriously, but to participate in a comedic storyline that mocks them (as in the case of ugly betty). so, the idea of playing "ugly" to be taken seriously is not an option for women who do not fit the beauty standard in the first place.
After euphoria came out and i saw clips of her acting, i seriously wondered why she wasn’t instantly famous and getting more roles. She’s amazing and now that youve said she needs an ugly role, i completely agree
Great video!! I’m curious if you’ve seen her role in the 2018 show “Everything Sucks”? Her character in it definitely has some small overlap with Cassie, and does definitely play a similar type role of being the “pretty girl” but it’s not overly sexual and she plays a queer teenager in it. It’s a great show, it’s unfortunate she never got much recognition for it
she is only there as eye candy most of the time though, as opposed to other characters which have much more screen time, backstory, and simply platonic relationships established in the series, everyone she interacted with seemed to have a crush on her or at least want her in some sexual/romantic way. we really only see her through kate's eyes, we never really learn anything about her and she is treated like eye candy most of the time. that role is at its core being hot and dramatic. totally get your point and it's much much better compared to some of her other roles in terms of being oversexual, but she still is there to be the token pretty girl with some edge. kinda reminded me of the whole manic pixie girl trope.
ugh, i hate that i agree with the previous commenter because i think that roles similar to that could also solve the problem outlined in the video. to put it bluntly, i think that sydney has to distance herself from her male audience a bit, and taking another queer character would be such a good way to do that. this is the same girl that, prior to blowing up, openly talked about taking a girl to prom, and then the second she became a sex symbol she had to play into the all american bombshell that the male gaze required of her. she’s so talented but she’s so hindered right now.

I was just thinking about Alexandra Daddario and wondering if this affected her career as well. Another big example is Jane Fonda going from Barbarella to Klute. The podcast "You Must Remember This" does such a good job contextualizing Jane Fonda's career and how her relationship was also informing her sex symbol status. She chose to distance herself from the male gaze, got a mullet and won her second oscar.
I've watch a bunch of Daddario's film. She's not really great as an actress. Her acting skills are very mid. If I were a director, I wouldn't want to hire her because she tried to be funny but isn't, and other beautiful actress can actually be funny. Most of her films she's like a pretty bystander character.

Why should young actresses be subjected to such humiliating and degrading treatment to show the world that they have talent? Why do they need to make themselves ugly and unattractive to be taken seriously? Why work in such an environment? Jane Fonde complained about her role in Barbarella for being degrading to women. Nothing compared to today's challenges that young and beautiful actresses have to go through. The blonde, young and incredibly fresh Goldie Hawn received an Oscar in Cactus Flower. Except being ugly isn't bad. Especially since in Hollywood standards to be ugly is to be complex. Being ugly is basically being allowed the right to be a human, with imperfections in both personality and appearance. I can't see how an actress could find this degrading when all it means is that they don't have to play a role as a blonde beauty or a femme fatale.
As someone with auburn coloured hair, the blonde bombshell stereotype has seriously effected my self esteem and confidence because i grew up in a family of men who objectified slim blonde women with huge boobs etc. I think that I was really hoping that the blonde stereotype would have faded out by now but it hasnt, i think filmmakers use it as a means of safety when creating a sexualised female character because they know it works. Most redhead characters are always the nerdy ones or the creepy ones, especially male redhead characters, and even with brunettes theres a definitive difference there as they are usually displayed as more traditionally geeky and less attractive than blondes
The blonde bombshell stereotype is usually accompanied with a "dumb" or "bimbo" aspect where they cater to men's needs. Brunette bombshells on the other hand tend to be sharp, almost scary to men with their independence and individuality.
Its crazy because I felt so uneasy watching that one scene that Emelia did with Jason in Game Of Thrones. It seemed physically painful and I was horrified watching it.
Highly recommend the movie Reality. I went into it knowing absolutely nothing except that Sydney Sweeney was in it and came away incredibly surprised. Definitely recommend and i think it really showed her acting chops as opposed to just being blonde bombshell
I've been a fan of Sydney's since seeing her in "Everything Sucks!" on Netflix. I remember writing her name down bc I thought she was immensely talented and felt like I'd see her in more roles. Handmaid's Tale, Sharp Objects... fast forward to Euphoria. I'd watch reactions and notice Cassie's scenes (particularly her ab*rtion arc) made people cry. I really feel she has it in her to be one of the best actresses of our generation if she, like you said, can shed the "only a pretty face" casting. Real life controversy aside, I want it for her. it is difficult to be perceived as beautiful. the halo effect goes both ways. people perceive positive things from you, but they expect you to maintain the image that they have of you in their minds. and the moment that you stray, you lose everything.
Absolutely bang on!! I've seen bits and pieces of Sweeny on screen & I've been continuously impressed by her performances. I see her "sexiness" as an asset - and her willingness to commit to it on screen as indication of undeniable talent (not that drawing boundaries as an actor implies less talent or commitment - it's not her willingness to appear nude, but her willingness to embody a character). It's such a waste to see her typecast, honestly. I'd love to see her in a sexy but complex role, in a role with no discernible sexuality, in a role where sexuality is usually stripped from women on screen (idk, motherhood is the only example I can think of), etc etc. It's also a bummer that the "ugly" role may be the only thing that breaks her current trajectory. I mean, 'Reality' qualifies as an ugly role for Sydney Sweeney. Her character is rough, and she doesn't wear makeup. Great movie and wonderful performance by Sweeney too.
People keep mentioning ‘Reality’ as if that was a huge feature film or show like Euphoria or a box office hit. All of these beautiful women who played “ugly” roles were in huge box office movies. That’s why they got the recognition they did. Sydney is clearly a young actress with tons of potential. If Season 2 of Euphoria doesn’t tell you that, then I think the viewer is the problem. Her unhinged Cassie moments showed her full potential it just about directors actually giving her that role and her being willing to take them. ‘Reality’ is a good example of her willing to try the less glamorous roles so I feel like as she gets older, we will see more of her capabilities outside of blonde bombshell. Another actress I think about is Jennifer Lawrence, who I believe had an Oscar nomination for Winters Bone and she was like 17. JLaw is an example of a bombshell blonde who started off with an “ugly” role and is fully capable of playing bombshell roles in every movie but consistently takes on a wide variety of roles. Just look at her filmography. She can play a superhero, action hero, femme fatale, romcom, ugly role, serious role, silly, horror, and everything under the sun. She is not my fav actress by any means but her range in being able to be casted as any role is why she is so successful because she is gorgeous, blonde and fully capable of also being typecasted if she wanted to.
She has a movie called Reality and Nocturne. Her acting is well done in it. It isn't her fault that people are hyperfixated on her nudes in Euphoria that they didn't bother w her other movies.

Great video. You really hit a lot of major points with women in the entertainment industry. Just also wanted to bring up one of Halle berry's first roles was Losing Isaiah. It came out in the mid 90s. Halle plays a drug addict who abandons her infant child. It was a very powerful role. I will say she does get kinda "pretty" near the end of the movie because her character goes through rehab and tries to get custody of her child.
I loved your commentary, and I am happy I got to view a side of things I don't know much about. I won't lie, it was hard for me to accept that obstacles also existed for conventionally pretty people, but, upon hearing your perspective, I realised that there is a deeper nuance to the roles women play, or, at least, more than I was ready to acknowledge. That being said, I would like to add on to your points about other races of women and those who are outside of the "blonde bombshell" stereotype. A similar construct in the black community and for black actresses is the "jezebel," which also exists in other cultures as the imperialistic stereotype of the "exotic." This occurs a lot with ethnic minorities (within the realm of American and European) who have "eurocentric" features that are also present in the "blonde bombshell" (e.g. straight hair, thin noses, high cheekbones); the picture of the American Ideal Woman. This can be seen with popular actresses like Halle Berry as you mentioned and Selma Hayek. Though their experiences may not be the same as European blonde women, I think they are still often typecast and kept in the realm of being an exotic temptress who should appeal to the European male gaze. The difference being that they can't necessarily leave that typecasting by playing an "ugly" role. On top of that, there seems to be an added connotation underneath their presence as a sex symbol; a common phrase "Oh, she's pretty for an [insert racial or ethnic group here] girl." A demeaning way of saying that they still couldn't compare to the beauty of a "blonde bombshell," they can only get close (blond highlights + eurocentric features.) However, these are all my observations. If possible, I would love to see your perspective on the topic in a different video essay if you have the time. TL;DR: Being a woman in Hollywood really f'ing sucks.
Another actress i think who has been able to handle this really well is Amy Adams. She's very attractive and starting out was seen as a bombshell but her roles in Doubt, and The Fighter got people to take her seriously and get her a ton of acclaim. She's a fantastic actress.

Rosamund Pike in I Care A Lot (2020), although not physically ugly, played an ugly (evil) person. And I LOVED it. It's fun to root for the morally corrupt sometimes, (a la her performance in Gone Girl.) More to the point, I think that's why I loved Big Little Lies so much. The actresses are PHENOMENAL at giving emotional, real performances. I agree, Syndey is much better as a dramatic actress. I love her raw passion conveyed in her scenes.

The only thing is I think that it's hard for actresses actually change public perception if the movie doesn't do well/aka is not seen by a lot of people. If I, Tonya didn't do so well, its likely that Margot Robbie wouldn't have been taken as seriously.
Margot followed Reese Witherspoon's playbook. Reese is never afraid to play unlikable roles (e.g. Election), but she was getting stuck as America's sweetheart. Producing their own movies seems to be a surefire way to get more interesting, complex roles for actresses.
I just want to add how insidious Emilia Clarkes situation was. I didnt see those interviews before and had thought she was aware of the role before hand etc. However. As a GoT fan, and a book fan. They not only absolutely could cut down her nudity since there are few scenes where the plot "needs it", but they ADDED nudity and assault scenes to her story that wasnt in the books, if they were so worried to upset the fans. On top of that, the nude scenes that would be considered "relevant" they had no issues in "changing" them up a bit, in the interest in keeping her pretty. As in, the character she plays has all of her hair and clothes burnt off, leaving her bald and her hair slowly growing over the course of the story (all though her hair is burnt off twice lmao). And lastly, when she finally managed to stand up for herself and refused for a scene where the plot "needed it", they did the same thing they did for Lena Headey and simply cgi'd a body double on her head so that she doesnt need to go through that. They had many options, they just wanted her to get naked, which is just a new level of awful for D&D.

I can't see people mentioning Reality (2023). This movie portrays Sydney Sweeney as a rather regular person, as the movie is based on a real event. There's no point in the movie where there's even a subtle focus on her look. It's a good movie, I highly recommend it.
She needs to pull a Margot Robbie move, people started to take Margot seriously when she did I, Tonya and was nominated an Oscar. Has anyone seen her in Reality on Hulu? Idk about it being an “ugly” role per se, but she plays a plain Jane pretty convincingly and that really changed how I view her acting range. She has a lot of untapped ability and potential for difficult roles. I’m sure she’ll start leaning into that more as she tries out romcom movies. But she definitely seems to shine in intense dramas. Also there is a huge difference in how she appears in Suicide Squad vs Birds of Prey. Virtually none of the women in Birds of Prey are over sexualized where as Suicide Squad is liberal in the sexualization of Harley, and it definitely has something to do with the directors of those films.

I feel this is very true for Scarlett Johansson. She has a great potential for drama, but she built her whole career on being a blonde bombshell and even when she acts in dramatic roles it is seen as sexy (her voice acting in Her, for example). As a result, no one mentions her as a great award-worthy actress, even though she is. Marriage Story was the first movie in which I actually thought they toned down her looks to make her acting shine more.

I think it was more than a small role. At least to me. It really symbolized the importance of putting Gilead and their values before everything. Including the life of your own child, once they were no longer living in your house. Her death was horrific and 100% at the hands of her own father. It was one of the most devastating things I’ve watched on the show personally. She was still a child, in my eyes. She was what 16? She tried so much to be the perfect person and wife, and all she did was fall in love and go to her parents for safety. Something we should all be able to do at that age, especially if we are hiding from the government.

Sydney Sweeney is a great actress, but she needs to be cast in a role that doesn't center on her looks. I've seen her in other films where her character is better explored, and she really does a great job. Brie Larson's role as Ma in Room became her breakout role that rightfully got her numerous accolades after being in the industry for twenty-something years. While Larson wasn't a blonde bombshell, her role in the movie was "ugly", gritty, raw, and vulnerable. I felt that it finally got her recognized as a serious actor and opened doors for her in Hollywood.
Brie is a fantastic actress, sad that she gets a lot of shit for Captain Marvel when it's not her fault that the movie sucked
@K.C-2049 let’s not pretend the movie wasn’t trash. But that wasn’t Brie, the writing was, the directing was. I got introduced to her through marvel, and I did not like her character at all. I hated her brooding, how rude, entitled and “girl boss” coded she was.
I hate girl boss female characters that are stoic, emotionless, have no obstacles/struggle or connection etc
Take a look at Vi from Arcane and Captain Marvel. Both have mentors, both are hot headed and serious characters, but the difference is when we saw Carol training and her mentor tells her she is hot headed and struggles with her emotions, we don’t really see her being that way we are just told. But when VI’s mentor tells her she fights first than thinks, the audience actually recognized that flaw BEFORE he verbally puts it out there. We see how she easily gets into brawls with the secondary characters of the show, how easy it is for her to throw punches. Contrast to her sister who’s more practical, into building machines and is a tinker. So when Vi gets older and becomes both a fighter and a thinker, we see the blatantly obvious character arc.
Captain Marvek however? “I have nothing to prove to you.” Yeaaa, I didn’t feel that scene. If I didn’t see clips of Brie Larson acting in Room I would’ve thought she couldn’t act because there were no character nuances with Captain Marvel or impeccable story writing. Just rushed movie that assassinated the greatest mystery in the mcu which was how Nick Fury lost his eye to a freaking cat. Also she’s indestructible. What’s her flaw?? What’s her struggle?? Ugh ew
yeah Brie Larson was never "hot bombshell" as you stated so thats a different scenario. Of course its about personal taste too, but objectively she is nowhere near Charlize Theron or Margot Robbie, and not only look-wise but also acting-wise.

I can’t imagine how hard it must’ve been doing your acting job, whether by choice or being coerced into doing the scenes and then experiencing a backlash from the public. You’re right that the K actresses we mainly see today did not have to go nude, maybe because of talent, connections, and visuals.
I was thinking of Lim Ji-yeon (the villain from The Glory) as an example of a k actress who had to go nude for her role in Obsessed when she was a rookie. She garnered attention from that role and some awards, and while it did help her to get recognized, I just read that she also faced criticism for that role. Kim Go-eun and Esom also had the same experience as Lim Ji-yeon.
After reading articles about the K actresses who did those scenes, I now realize how harsher the Korean netizens are towards them. While doing those scenes may have helped the actresses garner attention and awards to support their careers, their audience will still give them harsh criticism no matter how much talent or skill they provide. Which is hard, to be honest. I don’t want actresses, in general, to feel the pressure of thinking that they need to do it and have the stress of anticipating a backlash.
I disagree. Not all beautiful actresses had to do nude scenes to get ahead. I can name many from now and previous decades gone that have never done nude scenes. If a story or a scene requires a nude scene or a sex scene than thats fine. And an actress can always say no when she reads in the script there's a sex scene, the male actors too. Most 18 certificate or R rated movies or tv shows its usually cause theres a nude/sex scene or very gory violence ... you know what you are getting into when you watch a movie like that and people - men and women, do like to watch movies like that. Men like to watch beautiful women in movies and tv shows etc and women like to watch attractive men in movies and tv shows etc. Take a movie like Terminator 1984, there's a sex scene in that and thats actually a very important part of the story. Same with Basic Instinct and other romantic thrillers, a nude or sex scene is required and how they film it its down to the director ... it could be shown with no nudity and fillmed quickly or have it go on for a couple minutes and show nudity. It all depends on what story you are telling and if the scene requires it and if the director wants to do a scene like that. Some directors may want to show the sex scene and some may skip past that, show the 2 characters kissing in bed then starting to take each others clothes off then cut to an hour later where they are both asleep in bed or cut to the next morning of them waking up. Actors and actresses can always turn down that movie or tv show if they dont want to do a nude/sex scene etc. If you think about it, 1930s-1960's movies there was either none or very, very little nudity back then and women would have had no say in the matter in those times. Seems like 1970s onwards there as loads of nudity, mainly in horror movies and in the 80s and thrillers in the 90s.
But I also get your take and the person who made this video, that beautiful women get type cast as the sex symbol or sexpot etc. And beautiful blondes get labelled as the dumb blone which is stupid. But being typecast as a certain character, this could be a good thing or a bad thing depending how you see it. Its true for male actors as well but not as much for actresses. But its also the same for film-makers and writers .... you make a movie and it does really well you get labelled or typecast as a genre film-maker and will most likely only get work in that genre. Unless you are a big name like Nolan, Spielberg, Cameron, Tarantino ... you can make any movie you want and get financed.
Its all about money and ratings. Actors can always turn down roles but an actor/actress just starting out, you should never turn down paid work.
I'm sure Hollywood has issues, but you're also being very selective with your examples. There are at least as many actresses who have never done nudity, but still became famous and popular. ...such as Julia Roberts, Keira Knightley, Jennifer Garner, Megan Fox, Mila Kunis, Emma Watson, Anna Kendrick etc. - you can google dozens of clickbait-lists of such people.
The common denominator is probably that they've all been offered a 'shortcut' to fame at some point, and could've built their careers faster if they'd gone nude. Sidney Sweeney appears to have taken that route. She's not bad, but she kinda used nudity to kickstart her career.

I am incredibly biased re: Margot Robbie as I grew up with her in neighbours and have watched her meteoric rise to fame. It is not coincidence that these amazing female actors end up becoming producers to gain better control of their film roles.

As for the excess of the nude scenes- I feel like the problem lies not just in one group. The producers, undeniably people in the power, are simply behaving like businessmen, they demand nudity because it's a very cheap and easy way to get attention (and therefore money) from the public. The actors agree to do the nude scenes, because they know not only it will help their career, but also that if they don't agree, most likely someone else will do that, so they often choose to sacrifice their well-being and dignity in order to get the role. But let's not forget about us, viewers- we also have a sort of a power, as we are the source of the moviemakers' income. If the producers were more ambitious and less greedy, if there was a solidarity between actors and if the viewers didn't show so much interest in the nude scenes- it all could be different. But I am afraid it is absolutely unrealistic.

This made me think a bit about Sofia Vergara in her new show Griselda. She’s already incredibly successful but for years I always wondered if she was gonna do a more serious and less of a “the hot one” bombshell role. Very exciting when actresses completely shift their regular genre.
NOTE: I agree women shouldn't have to go this route to be taken seriously. But this video isn't arguing for an idealistic change for women in hollywood, it's working within the framework that currently exists.
This is about how Sydney could change perceptions today with society as it is currently. Yes if she could find an attractive complex role that would be great. But since her looks already outshine her acting in the eyes of many, she's been dug into a bit of a hole. An ugly role gives more freedom because she's not competing with her looks.

her character in euphoria is complex, it's just about playing a role not focused on being pretty, not having scenes directed to make you look the most flattering all the time with the perfect little aesthetic makeup and just allowing her to show raw emotions without having to make it look cute. being naked totally falls under the umbrella but i do think there's more to it and i do think not all nudity is sexual in films. it all just depends on the choices taken by the director.

@@viola5281i think you bring up a good point because Cassie had the potential to be a complex character but Sam Levinson would rather relegate her to just another girl with daddy issues. when you really think about it, who is Cassie aside from her problems with men? has she ever even had a storyline that didn’t revolve around her sexuality in some way? not really. and the same can be said for a lot of Euphoria’s characters. they don’t really have any interests, hobbies or goals. their trauma is their only real identity. that’s why Sam Levinson’s writing/shows have come under such scrutiny lately. his shows are entertaining and gorgeous cinematically but that’s about it. Rue is easily the most complex character but that’s because Sam himself struggled with addiction. he only knows how to write for what he experienced, which is why characters like Cassie feel a bit shallow and oversimplified. if Sydney truly wants to play complex characters she’s going to need to work for a production that actually hires good writers.

The idea of ugly people being more "real" and taken more seriously by others is hilarious to me. And I say this as a maybe not ugly but below beauty standards person.
I don’t think it’s true myself lol these conversations get so muddled with peoples own projections of their perceived attractiveness. There’s so much to unpack with the convo it’s not so cut and dry.
I think in the context of the entertainment and film industry, it is considered more "real" or serious to look less conventually attractive, especially in an industry that is hyper-critical of people's appearances and perceived talent.
This video mentions that it is discussing the entertainment industry and a small portion of this industry. The narrator even says this isn't the only way to be taken seriously, but it is a way to break a mold and possibly reshape that actress' direction in the industry.
I think the reality of being less than conventually attractive does not make someone "real" or it doesn't make their actions or behaviors seem more serious in real life. If anything, being more attractive in real life would probably do that for some people. But, I think this conversation is important in the context of the industry we're discussing. This video isn't about everyday people; it's about a narrow and bias industry that already has a negative perception of women, regardless of how they look.
Studies have already shown that beautiful people are taken more seriously in any context. The issue is that actors don't know how to say "no." Honestly though, if the role is advertised as having nudity, I don't really care. You beat out numerous other actors who wouldn't do nudity.

I agree with this 100%. I genuinely believe Sam had Sydney do those nudity and sex scenes for his own pleasure, and because he knew how many guys would watch the show just to see Sydney naked. It also creeps me out that although Sam didn’t write the show, he based the characters through his own life experiences…..I think for Sydney’s role or Cassie, Sam based her off of girls in his old high school who were attractive, had big boobs, and who he wanted to have sex with but couldn’t….so he took on the position in Euphoria and made Cassie do those nudity scenes for his own pleasure. the thing about Margot with I, Tonya (and most of her films now) is she made those films and roles happen. She and her husband created the production company that produced those movies. she's so underrated in how business savvy she is. It's one of things i respect most about her. She could've easily just taken the vapid viral attention she got from the wolf of wall street and kept doing whatever came her way from other studios, but the very next year after the release of the wolf of street, she founded her production company and now that studio has multiple academy award nominated films (and will probably get another one this year for Barbie). If Sydney Sweeney could maybe go this route with her own production company, she could completely turn her career around and shape it into whatever she wants it to be. Even Charlize created her own production company and her first film produced was Monster. Missing from these conversations for a lot of these "ugly" female roles is how the pretty blonde actresses made those roles happen in the first place (Charlize, Margot, Reese Witherspoon, etc).

i think that actually, women of color cannot benefit from the "ugly role" "bombshell" dichonomy. women of color don't necessarily play "bombshell roles" because we are expected to be beautiful in Hollywood to play any role! because of this beauty standard of exclusion (white, skinny, blonde) halle berry and mariah carey (who must be beautiful to maintain their status) aren't necessarily "ugly" when they portray "ugly" roles. since many women of color (who are not white, skinny, or blonde) are assumed to be "ugly" anyway, they portray "ugly" roles not to be taken seriously, but to participate in a comedic storyline that mocks them (as in the case of ugly betty). so, the idea of playing "ugly" to be taken seriously is not an option for women who do not fit the beauty standard in the first place.

Her character in it definitely has some small overlap with Cassie, and does definitely play a similar type role of being the “pretty girl” but it’s not overly sexual and she plays a queer teenager in it. she is only there as eye candy most of the time though, as opposed to other characters which have much more screen time, backstory, and simply platonic relationships established in the series, everyone she interacted with seemed to have a crush on her or at least want her in some sexual/romantic way. we really only see her through kate's eyes, we never really learn anything about her and she is treated like eye candy most of the time. that role is at its core being hot and dramatic.
totally get your point and it's much much better compared to some of her other roles in terms of being oversexual, but she still is there to be the token pretty girl with some edge. kinda reminded me of the whole manic pixie girl trope.
ugh, i hate that i agree with the previous commenter because i think that roles similar to that could also solve the problem outlined in the video. to put it bluntly, i think that sydney has to distance herself from her male audience a bit, and taking another queer character would be such a good way to do that. this is the same girl that, prior to blowing up, openly talked about taking a girl to prom, and then the second she became a sex symbol she had to play into the all american bombshell that the male gaze required of her. she’s so talented but she’s so hindered right now.

I was just thinking about Alexandra Daddario and wondering if this affected her career as well.
Another big example is Jane Fonda going from Barbarella to Klute. The podcast "You Must Remember This" does such a good job contextualizing Jane Fonda's career and how her relationship was also informing her sex symbol status. She chose to distance herself from the male gaze, got a mullet and won her second oscar.

I've watch a bunch of Daddario's film. She's not really great as an actress. Her acting skills are very mid. If I were a director, I wouldn't want to hire her because she tried to be funny but isn't, and other beautiful actress can actually be funny. Jane Fonde complained about her role in Barbarella for being degrading to women. Nothing compared to today's challenges that young and beautiful actresses have to go through. The blonde, young and incredibly fresh Goldie Hawn received an Oscar in Cactus Flower. I mean you could have a successful career without tying yourself up like that.

As someone with auburn coloured hair, the blonde bombshell stereotype has seriously effected my self esteem and confidence because i grew up in a family of men who objectified slim blonde women with huge boobs etc. I think that I was really hoping that the blonde stereotype would have faded out by now but it hasnt, i think filmmakers use it as a means of safety when creating a sexualised female character because they know it works. Most redhead characters are always the nerdy ones or the creepy ones, especially male redhead characters, and even with brunettes theres a definitive difference there as they are usually displayed as more traditionally geeky and less attractive than blondes
The blonde bombshell stereotype is usually accompanied with a "dumb" or "bimbo" aspect where they cater to men's needs. Brunette bombshells on the other hand tend to be sharp, almost scary to men with their independence and individuality.

Highly recommend the movie Reality. I went into it knowing absolutely nothing except that Sydney Sweeney was in it and came away incredibly surprised. Definitely recommend and i think it really showed her acting chops as opposed to just being blonde bombshell
I've been a fan of Sydney's since seeing her in "Everything Sucks!" on Netflix. I remember writing her name down bc I thought she was immensely talented and felt like I'd see her in more roles. Handmaid's Tale, Sharp Objects... fast forward to Euphoria. I'd watch reactions and notice Cassie's scenes (particularly her ab*rtion arc) made people cry. I really feel she has it in her to be one of the best actresses of our generation if she, like you said, can shed the "only a pretty face" casting. Real life controversy aside, I want it for her. Thank you for making this video - I hope we can look back on it in another year or two with a positive result.
it is difficult to be perceived as beautiful. the halo effect goes both ways. people perceive positive things from you, but they expect you to maintain the image that they have of you in their minds.

Absolutely bang on!! I've seen bits and pieces of Sweeny on screen & I've been continuously impressed by her performances. I see her "sexiness" as an asset - and her willingness to commit to it on screen as indication of undeniable talent (not that drawing boundaries as an actor implies less talent or commitment - it's not her willingness to appear nude, but her willingness to embody a character). It's such a waste to see her typecast, honestly. I'd love to see her in a sexy but complex role, in a role with no discernible sexuality, in a role where sexuality is usually stripped from women on screen (idk, motherhood is the only example I can think of), etc etc. It's also a bummer that the "ugly" role may be the only thing that breaks her current trajectory. Just another way in which we're denied better experiences in service of sexism / misogyny. Sydney could give us a mind blowing performance in a hypothetical cerebral film, but society is too busy trying to get her tits into every possible shot. Big bummer
What Sydney needs is to do some roles where she can have fun, because she is always doing characters with way too much trauma and eventually that is going to mess her up because she is far too young for such demanding and energy draining characters. I mean, 'Reality' qualifies as an ugly role for Sydney Sweeney. Her character is rough, and she doesn't wear makeup. Great movie and wonderful performance by Sweeney too.
People keep mentioning ‘Reality’ as if that was a huge feature film or show like Euphoria or a box office hit. All of these beautiful women who played “ugly” roles were in huge box office movies. That’s why they got the recognition they did. Sydney is clearly a young actress with tons of potential. If Season 2 of Euphoria doesn’t tell you that, then I think the viewer is the problem. Her unhinged Cassie moments showed her full potential it just about directors actually giving her that role and her being willing to take them. ‘Reality’ is a good example of her willing to try the less glamorous roles so I feel like as she gets older, we will see more of her capabilities outside of blonde bombshell.
Another actress I think about is Jennifer Lawrence, who I believe had an Oscar nomination for Winters Bone and she was like 17. JLaw is an example of a bombshell blonde who started off with an “ugly” role and is fully capable of playing bombshell roles in every movie but consistently takes on a wide variety of roles. Just look at her filmography. She can play a superhero, action hero, femme fatale, romcom, ugly role, serious role, silly, horror, and everything under the sun. She is not my fav actress by any means but her range in being able to be casted as any role is why she is so successful because she is gorgeous, blonde and fully capable of also being typecasted if she wanted to.

Great video. You really hit a lot of major points with women in the entertainment industry. Just also wanted to bring up one of Halle berry's first roles was Losing Isaiah. It came out in the mid 90s. Halle plays a drug addict who abandons her infant child. It was a very powerful role. I will say she does get kinda "pretty" near the end of the movie because her character goes through rehab and tries to get custody of her child.
I loved your commentary, and I am happy I got to view a side of things I don't know much about. I won't lie, it was hard for me to accept that obstacles also existed for conventionally pretty people, but, upon hearing your perspective, I realised that there is a deeper nuance to the roles women play, or, at least, more than I was ready to acknowledge. That being said, I would like to add on to your points about other races of women and those who are outside of the "blonde bombshell" stereotype. A similar construct in the black community and for black actresses is the "jezebel," which also exists in other cultures as the imperialistic stereotype of the "exotic." This occurs a lot with ethnic minorities (within the realm of American and European) who have "eurocentric" features that are also present in the "blonde bombshell" (e.g. straight hair, thin noses, high cheekbones); the picture of the American Ideal Woman. This can be seen with popular actresses like Halle Berry as you mentioned and Selma Hayek. Though their experiences may not be the same as European blonde women, I think they are still often typecast and kept in the realm of being an exotic temptress who should appeal to the European male gaze. The difference being that they can't necessarily leave that typecasting by playing an "ugly" role. On top of that, there seems to be an added connotation underneath their presence as a sex symbol; a common phrase "Oh, she's pretty for an [insert racial or ethnic group here] girl." A demeaning way of saying that they still couldn't compare to the beauty of a "blonde bombshell," they can only get close (blond highlights + eurocentric features.) However, these are all my observations. If possible, I would love to see your perspective on the topic in a different video essay if you have the time. TL;DR: Being a woman in Hollywood really f'ing sucks.
Another actress i think who has been able to handle this really well is Amy Adams. She's very attractive and starting out was seen as a bombshell but her roles in Doubt, and The Fighter got people to take her seriously and get her a ton of acclaim. She's a fantastic actress.

The only thing is I think that it's hard for actresses actually change public perception if the movie doesn't do well/aka is not seen by a lot of people. If I, Tonya didn't do so well, its likely that Margot Robbie wouldn't have been taken as seriously.
Margot followed Reese Witherspoon's playbook. Reese is never afraid to play unlikable roles (e.g. Election), but she was getting stuck as America's sweetheart. Producing their own movies seems to be a surefire way to get more interesting, complex roles for actresses.
I just want to add how insidious Emilia Clarkes situation was. I didnt see those interviews before and had thought she was aware of the role before hand etc. However. As a GoT fan, and a book fan. They not only absolutely could cut down her nudity since there are few scenes where the plot "needs it", but they ADDED nudity and assault scenes to her story that wasnt in the books, if they were so worried to upset the fans. On top of that, the nude scenes that would be considered "relevant" they had no issues in "changing" them up a bit, in the interest in keeping her pretty. As in, the character she plays has all of her hair and clothes burnt off, leaving her bald and her hair slowly growing over the course of the story (all though her hair is burnt off twice lmao). And lastly, when she finally managed to stand up for herself and refused for a scene where the plot "needed it", they did the same thing they did for Lena Headey and simply cgi'd a body double on her head so that she doesnt need to go through that.
They had many options, they just wanted her to get naked, which is just a new level of awful for D&D.

I love this take... But she can pick roles based on the best for her interests if she knows what direction her career should take. Kate Winslet always said after Titanic she could pick any role she wanted because she "made it", being for the money or the status but she always choose small indie films with complicated roles and always having higher standars in quality instead of wanting the exposure... Knowing if her work went to be known as a guaranty of great quality she could be working for the rest of her life... We all know how different it is for women. Adam Sandler can be acclaimed for Uncut Gems one year and then be making his "Adam Sandler" comedies (no hate, I LOVE him) and his career still be unharmed; Will Smith and how much he was paid for Wild Wild West, but don't ignore those "carrer killing" roles for most actors (specially women) and notice how uneven everything is. Thank God shit like the Razzies are losing popularity and audiences are a little more forgiven now with "failed roles"
I can't see people mentioning Reality (2023). This movie portrays Sydney Sweeney as a rather regular person, as the movie is based on a real event. There's no point in the movie where there's even a subtle focus on her look. It's a good movie, I highly recommend it.
She needs to pull a Margot Robbie move, people started to take Margot seriously when she did I, Tonya and was nominated an Oscar. Has anyone seen her in Reality on Hulu? Idk about it being an “ugly” role per se, but she plays a plain Jane pretty convincingly and that really changed how I view her acting range. She has a lot of untapped ability and potential for difficult roles. I’m sure she’ll start leaning into that more as she tries out romcom movies. But she definitely seems to shine in intense dramas. I’m really excited to see her in that new horror movie!!
