I made my last fling with ICE and bought a 2018 Mazda Miata MX5. It fit the budget I had set for the Aptera and it's a 2 seater and fun. Life goes on..
As with all startups - don’t put your life on hold for the promise of something in the future. I would go so far as to say its in Aptera’s favor that you don’t, as nothing brings out resentment and vitriol more than people who’s lives are disrupted by shifting timelines and missing features. This is the reason many companies hold off on announcements until the day their product launches.
Looks like you found a good one Steve, thanks for the details. For us, it may come to buying another car before delivery, but we are definitely all in for Aptera and will see it through, no matter what!!
To the author: I would consider trying to reduce your garage temperature for battery longevity on your Ioniq Electric as it is fan cooled only, not water or refrigerant cooled. A heat pump water heater would help if your water heater is in the garage. Insulation on the garage doors might be good. I also had an early Leaf and babied the battery only to have it fall to 80% by 25k due to a west facing garage in south Texas. Not saying that the Ioniq is as poorly designed as the Leaf but that battery could suffer at continuously high garage temps in summer.
I'm practicing with a vehicle that will give me the Aptera experience. I have a 1968 VW Bus with a Porsche 911 engine in it. It is all original on the outside and rust free. When I take it out, I get lots of thumbs up, beeps and mostly 20 minute conversations in the parking lot at the hardware or grocery store. I have lots of stories as it's been in the family since new and I grew up with it. Maybe try something like a Bus and get used to attention.
I think you got a good deal Steve. I checked Tampa Craigslist and found prices in FL to be $2k - 4k higher. Autotrader had Hyundais that had much higher mileage so don't beat yourself up. :-)
Got a 2022 Chevy Bolt LT2 eariler this year. Love the car! Hypermile the thing! Always finding ways to improve the aerodynamics on the vehicle. I will still hold my reservation for my Aptera and will purchase it when it comes time to do so.
One of the guys that I cycled with was retired. He built an extension on his garage and it was just going to be for his Elio. It was all painted up and had a big Elio logo on the back wall. It was the last vehicle he was ever going to buy. His wife got tired of driving around in her old Ford Escort or riding in his old Taurus. She went and traded in the Escort and bought a CRV. He was none too pleased. He died three years ago. Never got his Elio. Wouldn't ride in the CRV and his Taurus was on it's last leg. She sold the house and someone painted over all of that Elio stuff. I was amazed he put his life on hold, upset that his wife bought a vehicle and insisted he drive around in his clunker that was rusting out. He put down two $1K non refundable reservations too.
@billsmith5960 Aptera is going to read this and follow up the die casts with GloClocks for the garage. Maybe we’ll get a knock-knock twice a day. Can’t wait!
I had hoped my Aptera would be my next vehicle but with the dates pushed back again, I don’t think my current car will last so will need a gap vehicle.
I'm probably the odd man out with my "waiting for Aptera car", but I chose a used Chevy Camaro SS. V8, RWD manual transmission. It's the complete opposite of an Aptera in many ways, but still sporty and quick and fun just like I expect the Aptera will be. I thought about getting an efficient EV to hold me over, but I bought a couple years ago when EV prices were through the roof. I work fully remote, so I actually only drive it less than a thousand miles a year. I figured I have one last bit of fun with gas power before I start switching over to electric. 😂
Nice advice on turning off regen when on the highway (long distance; minimal breaking). I'll have to try that. Not sure if we can turn off regen completely on our Bolt (I think turning off one-pedal driving will do that). We bought the Bolt two years ago when our other car (Subaru Outback) was going to be out of commission for a few months. Glad we were "forced" to make the switch. The cost per mile is
@greghelton4668 75 mpg is killing it. I will look at Prius as well. I, at least for now would have to use public chargers. The Prois would be more economical if I have to $0.45/kWh or so to charge at public chargerd.
@ there’s little opportunity to drive fast at Hawaii but even on the mainland you should get 65MPG unless you’re driving aggressively. Maximizing efficiency is a learning process.
In April someone totaled my 2016 Prius, insurance gave me a big check, I ended up buying my 1st BEV, a 2021 Model Y long range with 44,000miles on it for $30,000. It went beyond my expectations. I love its size ( huge room) , love its range ( 300miles), and LOVE the tech. But,, your ionic for the money is GREAT!! Glad you like it! The model Y isn’t quite as efficient as your ionic, but for a car its size it’s pretty good averaging 3.84whr/mile. The included autopilot works really really well, and FSD has come a looooooong way, and it’s getting there. It came with acceleration boost and has insane acceleration, and is very fun! Handles like a sports car. But,,,,, still GREATLY looking foward to my Aptera, don’t think they’re missing the boat.
Nice buy… To many more EV miles! Love our S. Korean brand EV ”, a KIA EV6 Gt line RWD and like its weight distribution/ traction We drive in Eco mode all the time with iPedal ( max regen ) with great pleasure. Great range even though it doesn’t have a heat pump ( the AWD does ) Trusy my 2017 Honda Ridgeline (120k miles ) get me through to my Aptera delivery🤞 Enjoy your EV ride !
@@rngalston Being in S. Calif. and garaging the vehicle made it easier to maintain the battery pack. I'm still on the original battery and can eke out 70 miles in range because I have babied the battery and have done nothing other than short trips. The only major issue I had was the coolant pump for the motor went out about a year and a half ago that had to get replaced.
@madmotorcyclist I've replaced the 12vt batt twice but otherwise, just general maintenance(tires, wipers and wash, fob batt, etc). 100k and going strong! Except for range...
@@rngalston Wow, you got a lot more miles than me (very impressive). I've replaced the accessory battery 3 times, key fob batteries 4 times, had one flat tire, and that coolant pump are the only things I had done (besides that stupid air filter).
Still paying off my 2018 Honda Fit, which I got in 2017, I think. Almost done paying it, which I should be done before the Aptera is out. Once the Aptera is out, I'll sell my Honda Fit. As much as I do love the Fit, it isn't an EV. Have my heart set on the Aptera and don't plan to change that. All this said though, my parents aren't getting any younger and I've had to be bringing both of them to doctor appointments lately. For those days I'll just have to use their own car.
@@artsmith103 Plenty of very successful 2-seater vehicles in the world. Aptera won't fail simply due to the limited seats. If you have a larger family, then obviously the Aptera would not suit for the only vehicle, which is why I mentioned if I did have to take my parents somewhere, I'd use their own vehicle. But thank you for watching and commenting on a video talking about Aptera. It helps get the word out on it, improving its success.
Hold on a second. So, the Cheapest Fit you could buy back then was around $16K. Here we are 7 years later and you are about ready to pay it off? I suggest not buying an Aptera as you ave no idea how much it will really cost and it's like 5 years from now if you ordered one today you'd get it.
@@billsmith5960 Maybe it's more fair to consider more expensive $18K Fit back then? Regardless in 1yr it's paid off. 1,000 miles/mo costs less than $90/mo gasoline. The Aptera will be over $200/mo payment, less range, less accommodations, more dangerous. But I don't expect he'll ever have the chance to waste that money. Parents are safe :-)
@@artsmith103 - It could be the $20K fit but honestly, those were rare. Let's go with it. Seems like it's a long time to pay it off. Plus old people will discover how hard it is to get in and out of an Aptera. Lord Monro seems to struggle a bit and he's getting up there. This is why they buy small CUV's. They sit high and old people can get in and out of them easily. So to haul around your parents, just get something like that. Buy a used Ford Ecosport. Old people love them.
Reality raises its scaly head... Good move, Steve. Too bad, though, that you couldn't test drive a pre-production Aptera in the recent Santa Ana "wind event" to test its behaviour in gusty crosswinds.
I'm also in the same situation. My reservation on the Aptera website states that the estimated delivery of the Launch Edition will be in 2026. I couldn't wait that long either, so last month, I bought a used low-mileage 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV Premier in the meantime.
We recently picked up our 3rd BMW i3.. this one is a 2020 and had only 17,000 miles on it and being a carbon fiber shell weighs under 3,000 lbs. and gets about 180-200 miles of range. If the Aptera dos not make it to production, I'll be perfectly happy with this car. Our first i3 was a lease assumption at $215 a month which we had for about 9 months.. got hooked and bought a Rex model with a small integrated gas generator since infrastructure was so poor at the time. Put about 90,000 miles on it and still have it. Needs a rear wheel bearing and has a cracked motor mount bracket. was quoted $4,500 for the motor mount bracket and motor mount from the stealership... just one side, not both! I will be doing that myself before selling it, I guess.
@@unclegeorge7845 Best of luck on the bidding! Our most recent i3 came from Mercer Island. Had our Rex model lowered by a friend in Skyway... just a hop skip and jump from Renton.
I also needed to buy another EV while I'm waiting for my Aptera (2026). I got a used 2021 Tesla Model Y with 100K miles on it, but with a new battery. You touched on the subsidy, but getting $4,000 off of a 2 year old or older EV that is priced under $25K is a great deal. Most likely this used EV subsidy will be going away with the new administration, but it is still available now. My daily commute (and additional driving) ranges between 100-140 miles, so I would only feel comfortable with at least 160 miles of range at 80% charge. But it looks like you got a great EV deal. Matching your driving needs.
@@IDNHANTU2day I was talking about the minimum (160 miles) that I would need in EV range for my commute, plus some extra daily miles as needed, and to generally feel comfortable in daily driving. His Hyundai EV was a bargain, but it has under 125 miles of range, which is good for his needs and use, but I just need a bit more.
I currently drive a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. It looks almost identical to the one on your post here. I absolutely LOVE that car, and I’ve owned a lot of cars over time. I get between 560-600 miles of range on a 12 gallon tank of gas. In two years I have driven it 80,000 miles with absolutely no issues at all. I have not even had to replace the brake pads. I only have had to do oil changes and tire rotations. It is on it’s second set of tires.. I do plan on moving towards an electric vehicle, but have been waiting for the range to improve on them since I put a lot of mileage on my car. If that doesn’t happen by the time I need to replace my Ioniq, I will most likely buy a used Ioniq hybrid with low mileage.
I'm in the same boat. Aptera pushed my date back to 2026 and I can't trust them not to push it back even further. I'm in need of a new car now so the summer of 2026 I will be forced to buy a electric car for now. I will stay on the Aptera waiting list and hopefully about time my number comes up I will have enough money saved again to get my Aptera. Aptera will have to realize the longer they wait to produce the Aptera the more potential customer they are likely to lose. A lot of people can't afford to buy two electric vehicles. I wish I could wait to buy the Aptera but my 2010 Jeep wrangler are beginning to have more and more expensive repair problems.
My reservation number is 5000+ My Ford plug-in Hybrid died. I bought a 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV. I charge at home but just received my Tesla adapter from Chevrolet. Not sure if I will keep it when Aptera arrives. Don't need 2 cars.
Glad to welcome you to the Ioniq owners club Steve! While I’m an Aptera reservation holder and that’s certainly the dream, I’m proud to see you bring light to some of the strengths of the IMO underrated Ioniq sedan. I’ve been driving a 2020 Hyundai Ioniq PHEV version for over four years now and it’s been great. Very efficient and aerodynamic, gets me almost everywhere I need to go daily on just electric 8.9 kWh, 29 mile battery. And when needing to use gas on longer trips, I regularly get 55 mpg. In urban driving, I love its regen paddle system you mentioned, and the quick and responsive control it gives you over the regen at any moment, and ability to turn it off completely for efficient coasting. My family sometimes thinks I’m hitting turn signals I use the paddles so much haha. One point I’d add is I also find its hatchback design to be very space efficient for its small body, having fit my road bike in the back with the seats down several times. While I understand Hyundai’s decision to discontinue the Hyundai Ioniq sedan lineup to focus on their all EV Ioniq lineup, for me it’s delivered a solid package of engineering, ergonomics/comfort, and efficiency at a decent price.
Yeah I think it's a mistake discontinuing this car. It is insanely efficient and practical. If they could make this for $25,000 I think it would sell very well
I'm very pleased with my 2020 Bolt I bought new. Will see when Aptera delivers if I keep it or not. It is easy in/out, and has been a great car. Tesla adapter has been worth it.
Patiently waiti g for my Aptera Currently driving a Leased 2024 Mitsubishi Oulander PHEV - GT wih a 20kWh Battery. In the summer without using AC, was getting average of 16kWh on a 8 to 10 km drive in the city. EV Range of 95 to 100 kms. Since it is A Plug In Hybrid with full tank of gas, can grt a range of 780 Kms in city driving. Havd not driven much in tge highway With Temps now averaging around 5'C and using heater about 10 of the time, I am averaging 75 to 80 kms on full charge anx using average of 20kWhr/100kms
I love my 2023 Bolt 2LT, and was hoping to not replace the tires before my Aptera arrives. Not gonna make it. We'll, maybe this will be the last time I need to buy four tires at once!
I am still making my 2001 Gen 1 Honda Insight work. Since solar and other environmental stocks are going down, I don't know what I will be able to do when the time comes.
Similar concerns about select stocks but guessing, quality solar companies/stocks will do OK, despite the "drill baby drill" rhetoric of prez elect. Was planning solar roof and wondering if incentives will survive after 2024.
Congrats on the new vehicle. Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. I hope it lasts, is trouble free and holds its value. I'm holding out with my 2008 Corolla based Pontiac lol. Still averaging 34 mpg in mixed driving. Manage to get 40 highway when I go an hour or more away driving "gingerly" as described 😊
Yup, same boat but I got a 2020 Toyota Tundra last year hoping to resell when my Aptera got delivered but with the date pushed out to 2026 I couldn't justify driving a massive truck by myself so I traded it in for a Hyundai Elantra and am much happier to get the same range as the Tundra but with 1/3 the gas!
I bought a 2020 Bolt EV with only 8k miles on the odometer in late 2023 for $22k plus tax and title minus the $4k tax credit, so around $20k out of pocket. I suppose someone bought it in 2020 for $40k and then parked it in their driveway following the battery fire hysteria. The car was in like new condition. I put another 12k miles on it before Chevrolet replaced the battery under warranty, and the new battery has an 8 year or 100k miles warranty just like the original battery, so I'll effectively have a battery under warranty for 120k miles. Other than the battery replacement, I've had no maintenance issues, and I couldn't be happier with the car. I will buy an Aptera if it's ever produced if the price remains under $40k and if the early adopters in California report good news a year or so after initial deliveries. I live in Georgia. I'll need to fly to California and drive my Aptera back to Georgia, so I won't be among the first deliveries, but I'm still hopeful. I'm not optimistic, frankly, but I'm hopeful. I want Aptera to succeed, and I want to drive one.
Have a 2017 Ioniq Hybrid, 170k miles averaging 53mpg, only have done oil changes (every 7k) and brakes (at 120k and the rotors and pads were still great...did it anyway). Best purchase ever.
I recently bought a 2016 Chevy Sonic with 104,000 miles for $6200. Love the car and how it handles. I am sure I would love the new Bolt ev coming out in 2026! I am waiting for the 600 mile battery on the Aptera so a new Bolt may be in my future plans.
I'm holding on to my 2013 honda fit. 160k on it, but it runs like new and since I'm retired and no longer commuting, I only put a few miles a week on it. I'm go to try and hold out until delivery in 2026.
If Aptera never delivers I am fine with my yellow Rivian R1S. I did need a gap vehicle once. I had a used Plug-in Hybrid Honda Clarity. Really nice car, similar to a Honda Accord. I got 40 miles on electric. I filled up the gas tank once in the 4 months I owned it.
Interesting. I like the easy to find and use buttons. Even the on-screen icons are large and accessible. I can't activate some functions of my Tesla while driving since they are buried in the on-screen menu as small icons or in small print. Hate it. Hope Aptera utilizes a few buttons and uses large screen icons.
Still enjoying my 2018 M3P and expect it to be going strong when (if?) my LE Aptera is ready. The solar charging is the only thing that will make me happy to give up my lifetime free supercharging…
When my 2015 Nissan Leaf was totaled in 2021, I bought 2017 Chevy Bolt Premier with 70k miles. Private party, it was a deal. Then, I have got a new battery under recall and made a few modifications to increase range and DC charging experience in the Winter. Now, 105k miles and still running as new.
I am 24k on the list so I just leased a 2024 Kia EV6 Wind Tech pack till October 26. It’s my first EV. $2000 down, $167 month 24,000 mile lease. This deal is still available in Fort Collins Colorado.
I bought that same car 1yr ago and I love it! 2019 IONIQ Electric. It is an incredibly efficient vehicle. With the right tires I get 5kw/mi easy. I just replaced the 12v battery with a lithium battery if anyone is interested in the details.
I kept waiting and waiting for the Aptera and I was driving my motorcycle thinking that they were getting close to coming out and of course that was not happening so I ended up having to buy a Tesla model three and as far as me getting the car now I’ll have to sort things out because I’ll Will lose a lot of money on my brand new Tesla if I traded it in or sold it as used so it’s a big problem for me that it took them so long cause I was very excited about getting it. I still am but I don’t know how it’s gonna work out now.
Any reason why you didn’t buy a Tesla? As for me I can wait as long as it takes for my Aptera. I have two good cars at the moment that have many years of life left on them.
We bought a 2012 iMiEV in 2015 for $7700 (actually won an eBay auction) ! My wife too likes the quietness, smoothness, AND lack of fuel & exhaust 'smells' of an EV ! Even though it only has a 16kw hour battery it too would get about 70 some miles/charge of range when we bought it with less than 10k miles AND when we were not using any climate accessories . Now it has over 45k miles on it and we're still getting about 60 some miles/charge of range on it !!! For just the two of us (and she works from home and we have another vehicle), we're still okay holding out for our Aptera yet :)
Since i have moved out of california, been needing a more utility vehicle, still holding out for aptera but not certain it will have a place for me anymore.
Getting 95mpg on my Honda PCX scooter and ride my eBike locally. Want the Aptera to trailer behind my RV when I retire (around the time the Aptera production is happening). So although I look at interim EVs, the cost doesn’t pencil in right.
Four out of our extended family of have either Hyundai EV's or hybrids. All love them. Based on their consistent endorsements, I think you will be pleased at least until your Aptare come in. They all like the long warranties.
Great real-life update! I can relate, but the car I needed was the family car. So, I ended up buying a 2022 Highlander Hybrid (approx. 32+ mpg). Great do it all vehicle! But, I do plan to wait for my Aptera! And, I'm waiting for the unicorn; 1000 mile, off-road, camping iteration (ETA: 2027, I suspect). Not in a hurry, though. Looking to save money and pay cash by then.
I just did a similar thing. However, I went much bigger price. 2024 Jaguar I-Pace R-Dynamic HSE. I did a lease, so the down payment helped with my payments. This is my FIRST EV.
Did your Leaf really not have DCFC? I recently bought a 2015 Leaf and it has a CHAdeMO port for DCFC. Charges at 50 kW on those rare occasions I can find a working CHAdeMO stall. (They’re dwindling fast.)
Comments are very telling. A lot of people making very thoughtful and high-value moves to match their situation. Aptera must have hooked a whole bunch of people with their efficiency claim, wherein it’s causing people to consider spending much more on a vehicle than they typically would. Going from high value used to 2-3X the money for a new Aptera. In most cases to something that has far less utility. It will be interesting to see how the PI’s actually test for efficiency. Hopefully, there will be a properly calibrated system/display that is comparable to what was shown in this video. Waiting for Steve to drive a PI. Given the display and his experience, he should be able to drive an Aptera and report how well they’ve really done. “Driven like this I would be normally seeing X and now I’m seeing Y” type of thing. Is everyone expecting 2X the efficiency of what he just bought or? Long time coming to find out what the product is truly capable of. I just hope it’s a thorough, clear, and definitive answer. And once the answer is clear, it will be interesting to see how everyone rates the whole package relative to what they have.
I'm suspicious what battery they are using and what style testing they would do to hide that if necessary. AOC should go to public charger, top off the battery, drive as far as possible, then fully recharge at the same original location. Divide miles by kWh and report results, don't use Aptera display. Use a gps phone app to measure distance traveled instead of Aptera screen.
Yes Bob, your comment is VERY telling. And yes, I am expecting the Aptera to be twice as efficient as my i3, because it will weigh about 1,000 pounds less and be much more slippery at speed. I will not miss the extra wheel or the extra seats... to answer the next bit of concern trolling. I have never purchased a new vehicle. Aptera is the only vehicle I would ever consider buying new, and it is projected to cost at least $10,000 less than any of the last 3 vehicles I have owned when they were new, with over twice the range of my latest, four times the range of the two previous, and even better acceleration.
@GullWingInnMoclips if it's less than $10K cheaper new, doesn't have the improved efficiency factors or range factors you listed, will you not buy it? The basis of most critics is illustrating the failures of Aptera and trying to expose developing truth. Apparently, professional investment is up to speed while crowd funding is still learning. Deleted Aptera features: IWM, Belly Cooling, avg 40 solar miles/day, 2022 delivery, $30K price. You can be sure there are more coming...
@artsmith103 Gull is already doing the high-value thing. Clearly found the i3 combo fills the bill and I think he’s on his 3rd. Notice that he had to compare a new i3 price to his perceived Aptera price to make a case for it.
@@bobhellman8676 Exactly, thanks for making my point for me.. again.! On price, do you think the Aptera will be anywhere near the price that a new i3 was? Hint.. think 50K plus. Also, your feeble little jab on me being on my 3rd i3... first one was a lease assumption that ran out, second one I put 90,000+ miles on and still have it... fixing a few issues and getting ready to sell it.. and the 3rd low mileage used one is new to me.. it was over 50K to the original owner. Thanks for playing.
Me, I bought an e-bike to fill the gap. Most of my trips are under 10 miles each way, so I was thinking this might work out. But with winter coming on, I'm wondering how well this is going to work.
@@harriettanthony7352 Decades ago I used to commute by bicycle from behind the St. Paul Cathedral in St. Paul, down to Lone Oak Drive in Eagan, Minnesota, about 8 miles each way, during the dead of winter. It was really not a lot of fun, but at the time it was my only option. You're right, I'm not ever doing that sort of thing again!
just did a 1000 mile road trip and had to use my truck, really cant wait for Aptera to start getting these out, I feel bad using my ICE vehicle that heavily knowing that there is a better option being help up by funding
2017 Outback with only about 35k miles after 8 years. I would like an Aptera once they are widely available, but its not a need, and I don't know if my wife is really sold on the idea considering we only need one car and the Outback is quite versatile with what we can do with it (really comes in handy for that monthly Costco run and that one time a year we haul 25 bags of bark dust for the yard). If we needed a second car I think the Aptera would be perfect (I used to have a Challenger that I sold when we no longer needed a second car, I still miss that car sometimes).
I had to replaced my Peugeot 206cc this week. It’s almost an Oldtimer by now. As I holdout for Aptera, I replaced it with the exact same model but different color. ;)
A few years ago we imported a 2005 L400 Delica, and now we're looking at importing a 2009-10 Estima Hybrid soon. Would love to get a used Aptera someday. In a perfect world, the upcoming Delica DX along with an Aptera would be a great combination for our lifestyle.
I reserved the Aptera in January of 2021 when it was going to be released by the end of the year. Then they pushed to about the same time my lease was going to be up on my Ford Explorer Platinum. It didn't happen so I purchased 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance. Im 1501 on the Tesla list. But with the new round of investment, I'll probably lose my position and become 2501. In just months, I went from H12025 to who knows when. BTW. I love my Tesla.
Hi Steve. I drive an Ioniq Blue hybrid. It is the best car I've ever owned. Hope yours treats you as well as mine has treated me - 207k and going strong! When I ordered my Aptera, my number in line was less than 1600. I also invested $1,000, but with all these other ways to get into line ahead of me. I don't know where I stand now? I'm a very patient person, but my patience are running thin. Could you address this in a future video? I'd really like to get your take. Thanks, Steve (We share the name)
I had intented to keep my Toyota Corolla going until my Aptera was delivered but it got totaled in an accident. I purchased a Chevy Bolt and I am super stoke. In a few years it will likely become my grandson's first car and I'll be driving the Aptera. I hope!
Yeah I bought a 23 Prius last year because I knew it's not coming any time soon. Especially because I want the 1000 mile model. That thing likely won't come till 2027-2028 if they even make it that long. At that point this car will already be at nearly the average lifespan people own a car.
My 2014 Chevy Volt is hanging in there with 183,000+ miles on it. However the "Service High Voltage Charging System" message pops up every day disabling its ability to plug in and charge. I now must reset the error code daily with my cheap ODB2 scanner. It might indicate a battery cell is weakening, or some other less expensive repair will be needed. Fingers crossed. 🤞 I told myself my next car will be a pure BEV, but I need to do regular 250 mile trips, so that limits my EV options.
I had a 500e for a while but couldn't handle the low range. The third time I found myself in a parking lot at 11 PM waiting to get enough miles to get home I sold it. 130 still seems pretty low to me. I do have a level 2 at home. That 5 miles per KWh is excellent. I get 10% better mileage than my wife. I was taught to drive as though there was a glass of Champagne on the hood and to not spill any and then a sprinkling of "Speed Kills". Can you turn regen off in a Tesla? Yikes. It takes more to run the headlights than the AC? I think your numbers need review.
You can turn off regen in older teslas, or at least turn it way down. Software updates may have changed that though, but I'm not sure. Aftermarket mods allow you to turn off regen (and unlock some software lockouts). And then there's the performance models that allow you to do all kinds of things, including temporarily turning off regen.
I made my last fling with ICE and bought a 2018 Mazda Miata MX5. It fit the budget I had set for the Aptera and it's a 2 seater and fun. Life goes on..
Picked up an 08 Miata in September. Huge fun!
Holding out with my 2016 Chevy Spark EV!
I think you got a good deal Steve. I checked Tampa Craigslist and found prices in FL to be $2k - 4k higher. Autotrader had Hyundais that had much higher mileage so don't beat yourself up. :-)
2016 Volt here. Fingers crossed it’s got some good years left
2014 Volt with 130k miles here. Runs great :)
I just leased an EV6 to fill the gap.
Awesome choice. Bet it will be fun. Nice car
The cost per mile is
Hybrids really are underrated. I drive a Prius and I get 75 MPG driving like a grandma at Hawaii. Still waiting for the Aptera though.
Is that a plug-in Prius? I like the idea of a plug-in Prius so all the around town driving is all EV, and just use gasoline for longer distances.
@ unfortunately mine is not a plug in. My neighbor has a plug in that’s gets him 40 miles in EV mode.
I'm holding out with my 2011 Nissan Leaf
Kudos
I had to lease a new one since my '13 just wasn't getting it in the winter.
I love my 15. Still has 90ish percent SOH, and so fun...
Perfect description of Aptera failure. Fortunately, neither of your parents will ever have to walk due to purchasing an Aptera.
Too bad, though, that you couldn't test drive a pre-production Aptera in the recent Santa Ana "wind event"
to test its behaviour in gusty crosswinds.
I got a used ‘21 Kia Niro EV last month. Lovin it.
You made a perfect choice---this writer has a 2019 Niro--and its first rate
I'm also in the same situation. My reservation on the Aptera website states that the estimated delivery of the Launch Edition will be in 2026. I couldn't wait that long either, so last month, I bought a used low-mileage 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV Premier in the meantime.
As you know I did over the summer. The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6.
Is it good? I used to be a Hyundai fan, had an Excel, Scoupe, Accent, and Elantra. I might try the Ioniq 6
My wife bought an Ionic 5 in June. We like it so much I just leased an EV6 because the KIA lease was so much better.
I'm interested in those.... how is it? Does it have the same features that Steve reports on this?
@@rviscariello yes and more. Very nice vehicles and a full generation newer technology.
Free lunch tomorrow!
Tomorrow never comes. Enjoy whatever you chose to drive for as long as it can.
Pretty much my plan and car choice. What state are you in? I could do those nasty repairs for a compensated price 🙃.

Purchased a new car last week after driving a 19 year old car. I am just now recovering from technology adaptation
On a new battery? You should be getting 240 minimum at 80%.
@@deanmcmanis9398 Got it!
Patiently waiti g for my Aptera
Currently driving a Leased 2024 Mitsubishi Oulander PHEV - GT wih a 20kWh Battery. In the summer without using AC, was getting average of 16kWh on a 8 to 10 km drive in the city. EV Range of 95 to 100 kms.
Since it is A Plug In Hybrid with full tank of gas, can grt a range of 780 Kms in city driving. Havd not driven much in tge highway
With Temps now averaging around 5'C and using heater about 10 of the time, I am averaging 75 to 80 kms on full charge anx using average of 20kWhr/100kms
thanks for the recommendation. I will probably also need one before my Aptera is available.
We'll find a way brother!
This is a great recommendation. Thanks.
I will still buy the Aptera...
I was in the same boat. Bought an EX30. Very happy with it.
Holding on with a ten year old BMW i3 REX. I had to laugh when I saw this topic.
Definitely getting the Aptera when it comes out, considering getting a used Model 3 or Y in the mean time.
Cool, Thanks for the tip. I've been looking a used Leafs that are remarkably cheap now but this may be worth a look.
Holding out with my Prius Prime 2018, but I really want the Aptera soon!
I think I'm going to stick with my beaten up 2006 subaru for another 5 years or so until Aptera arrives to Europe ;)
I also got a 2021 this summer. Welcome to the ioniq owners' club !
Same situation. Picked up a 2017 Chevy Bolt. 28k miles, new battery. 13k after tax rebate. Love it so far!
Hate it. Hope Aptera utilizes a few buttons and uses large screen icons.
have you set the font to Large?
Still enjoying my 2018 M3P and expect it to be going strong when (if?) my LE Aptera is ready. The solar charging is the only thing that will make me happy to give up my lifetime free supercharging…
When my 2015 Nissan Leaf was totaled in 2021, I bought 2017 Chevy Bolt Premier with 70k miles. Private party, it was a deal. Then, I have got a new battery under recall and made a few modifications to increase range and DC charging experience in the Winter. Now, 105k miles and still running as new.
I'm still all in on my Aptera, but looking to replace my 2012 Prius C with a Chevy Bolt when they come out next year.
I was in this same predicament in July. Picked up a used '22 M3LR and I love it.
I am 24k on the list so I just leased a 2024 Kia EV6 Wind Tech pack till October 26. It’s my first EV. $2000 down, $167 month 24,000 mile lease. This deal is still available in Fort Collins Colorado.
@keithjacobson4493 How do you know where you are on the list? I cannot find it anywhere.
I bought that same car 1yr ago and I love it! 2019 IONIQ Electric. It is an incredibly efficient vehicle. With the right tires I get 5kw/mi easy. I just replaced the 12v battery with a lithium battery if anyone is interested in the details.
Same here. I think it’s the closest option we currently have to an Aptera. Just need to cover the roof and hatch in solar!
Yeah easily get 5 miles per kilowatt hour with just normal driving. If I try to hypermile I can get six to seven miles per kilowatt hour
It really is a brilliant car. Their first try too!
I have been leasing EV’s as a stop gap and getting great deals until my Aptera is ready.
Your Ioniq instruments and controls are almost identical to my 2019 Hyundai Kona. I love the paddle regen controls but missing adaptive cruise control
I'm interested in the Canoo vehicle, or an aerodynamic pickup truck.
Someone needs to make a minivan EV.

Good deal. You're probably going to need both.
Ha ha , me too. 24 VW Jetta, averaging 50mpg.
Winter with an Ebike [or any other bicycle] the answer, from cold experience--is NO, NAY, NEVER, NO MORE!
Maybe car sharing for bad weather days… either via app or, if you have a friendly, forward-thinking neighbor?
@@harriettanthony7352 Decades ago I used to commute by bicycle from behind the St. Paul Cathedral in St. Paul, down to Lone Oak Drive in Eagan, Minnesota, about 8 miles each way, during the dead of winter. It was really not a lot of fun, but at the time it was my only option. You're right, I'm not ever doing that sort of thing again!
just did a 1000 mile road trip and had to use my truck, really cant wait for Aptera to start getting these out, I feel bad using my ICE vehicle that heavily knowing that there is a better option being help up by funding
Congratulations! This is a great car.
I'm holding onto my 2000 Caravan as long as I can keep it running. The replacement will be my LE Aptera. Can't afford anything else.
What dealership did you go to? I'm in search of a used car. I'm looking at the bmw i3 but they are hard to find around me.
Ya gotta do what you gotta do...
Aptera can take their time. I'm still trying to save up. I hope my current car can hold up until then.
Thanks, Steve
(We share the name)
I have the Ioniq 6 - it’s fantastic. I can get 650km on a full charge.
Currently rocking a 2023 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range and a 2016 Nissan Leaf SV
My 2014 Chevy Volt is hanging in there with 183,000+ miles on it. However the "Service High Voltage Charging System" message pops up every day disabling its ability to plug in and charge. I now must reset the error code daily with my cheap ODB2 scanner. It might indicate a battery cell is weakening, or some other less expensive repair will be needed. Fingers crossed. 🤞
I told myself my next car will be a pure BEV, but I need to do regular 250 mile trips, so that limits my EV options.
I'm about to get a car now too. Mine got totaled last month from hitting a deer.
Full regen is not efficient. More efficient if coast.
@@derpskipfukington6578 Thanks
This would be awesome second car.
That's a great deal on a great car Steve!!!!!!!!🎉
