His father had stage 4 kidney disease and they couldn't find a match for a transplant . He wrote the song about facing his fathers mortality and saying to him how he felt at that time . Luckily they found a relative who was compatible and received the transplant . Very powerful song . Still gets to me every time I hear it .

That is his father, Charles, in the Video. This was recorded before his father had a Kidney Transplant in January 2020, which was only months after he recorded this Song. It was to show his love & support for his father in the best way he knew how. His father came through the surgery & is living well with James Mother. His cousin (Also Charles Blount), was a compatible match. I'm a 63 year old married Aussie bloke & it brings tears to my eyes. I lost my mother to Kidney Failure, so it's close to home. Fabulous song, awesome singer & brilliant performance.

Yes, it was his father, Charles. The thing to remember is that James and his dad are upper class (posh) hence why you hear the poshness of his voice coming through. Both of them previously served in the British Army as officers. James was a Captain and his dad was a Colonel. James served in the Kosovo war (in the Balkans) in '99, and the line, "we are just two grown men saying goodbye" is what James said to his dad as he was being shipped off. Being they are upper class, they tend to be very stoic, hence why by the end James as tears streaming down his cheeks, his dad places his hand on his arm. This is very typical behaviour of the upper class.
After this record was released, James had ALL proceeds go to a British charity; Help For Heroes, which caters to the veterans.

Who cares if your mascara runs or you get a runny nose or you make the weirdest sounds when you cry, letting the tears come and escape your body is the best thing for you. I lost my Momma 4 years ago to Melanoma Cancer. Although I cried myself dry then, I have ocasional times still when I “ugly” cry for her. Let me tell you, letting it out does make it better. James' recording company wanted him to use 'Auto-Tune' but he refused because he wanted this to be 100% real and a genuine final message to his dad, who'd only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease, and he desperately need to find a donor (which he eventually did, thank God). I heard that James donated all the proceeds from this video to the amazing UK Charity 'Help For Heroes' who do such incredible work with ex-servicemen and service women I don't know how he managed to hold himself together as well as he did, although there are still a few wobbly notes sung towards the end. The line 'You're my your son, I'm not your father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye' was first spoken between them when they parted as James left for frontline (often ahead of the frontline) service in Bosnia, in 1999. James spent six years serving in the British Army, as a Troop Commander in an Armoured Recce Regt. He served with the Blues & Royals in Bosnia and has written other songs about the horrors he saw there. His father had been similarly a cavalry officer, before being made Colonel of the Army Air Corps.

This song loterally saved James's father's life, it was because of the song that a distant relative got tested and was a match to donate a kidney.
The whole thing was done live, and James told his dad, he had to get it right because he'd only be able to do it once. At the end everyone was in tears except his father who said "why's everyone in tears, I'm still here".
Also the record company wanted to use autotune to take out the cracks in James voice and he wouldn't let them, as he wanted it to be genuine and just the way it came out.

His dad was diagnosed with stage 4 chronic kidney disease, and he only had one kidney having donated one, no suitable donner had been found. His dad had been an Army Colonel, and as a young officer James went off to war in Bosnia - it was his dad who said "we are just too grown men saying goodbye" as his parting words. Deliberate raw, emotional single take. Lots of tears - except from his father, who was hearing this for the first time, just said "why is everybody crying? I'm dead yet." It did the job - because this song found a suitable donner. Powerful.

James Blunt is synonymous with weepies.
"You're Beautiful".......fantasizing about a relationship that can never be, and ends with suicide.
"Carry You Home".......death. The lyrics are rather cryptic, but they suggest a female sex worker who tries to shed her past. On the other hand, the video shows the personal effects and final letter of a fallen WWI soldier being delivered to his wife by a comrade who, in essence......carried him home.
"Goodbye My Lover"......self-explanatory; a consummate breakup song.
"Same Mistake"........self-reproach and acknowledgement of one's own foibles and weaknesses.

It's probably one of the most powerful songs I've ever watched. I've never known a song that never fails to make so many men cry. It's absolutely beautiful and taps into something extremely visceral and real and doesn't gloss over it.

I'm not a cryer, but this song gets me. Watched my dad fight cancer for years and finally succumb to it, and this hits home. Emotional, but also cathartic, my dad is always part of me, so I don't say I lost him, but I certainly miss having him here.

Heartwrenching video and reaction. If you want another good cry, try Dont throw it all away, live from the Bee Gees (89 I think). Its a tribute to baby Bee Gee Andy Gibb with home video thrown into the mix. Pulls at the heartstrings every time.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned but that is his father in the video with him, they are both ex-army and James has explained on tv shows that their relationship was quite distant because of this. He also explained that whilst filming this he and all of the film crew were very emotional and his father couldn't understand why every one was in tears !!!

This song resonates with me but in an absolutely opposite way. I was diagnosed with stage 4 liver failure (non alcoholic fatty liver disease) and being faced with one's mortality it really puts things intro retrospect. I don't have children, and sadly never will now.. but I've been going around and just watching people's reactions to this. Life is far more fragile than most realize, especially when it's just too late.. love that you do these reactions with your mother! She is a gem, an you are absolutely beautiful and can see where you got it. I wish you the best

Another great song to react to is Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. It’s based on a true event (the anniversary of which is coming up), and imo it’s one of the most hauntingly powerful songs ever written.

Children should give the best for their parents. But sometimes even that is still not quite comparable to the love parents have for their children. I have lost my father. And before closing our eyes, we looked at each other, I waved my hand slowly at him and said, goodbye, pap.. his eyes were still looking at me then slowly closed and didn't open again. For a moment I just realized the meaning of that look, maybe my father wants to talk. But the oxygen mask is attached to his mouth. Until now I always feel guilty and sorry for that.
Ok, to be honest I have never heard of this song though. And the first time I found out was when Cakra Khan covered it. He sings it is also dedicated to his deceased father.
Thanks to James Blunt for making such a great song.
Thanks for the reaction, and for reading my comments.
