His father had stage 4 kidney disease and they couldn't find a match for a transplant . He wrote the song about facing his fathers mortality and saying to him how he felt at that time . Luckily they found a relative who was compatible and received the transplant . Very powerful song . Still gets to me every time I hear it .

Apparently it was a distant cousin who saw/heard this song so it prompted them to reach out to James & family. The result was a (to date) successful transplant, so what an amazing example of how music reaches out and touches so many people.

It is also worth noting that Charles Blount* could not rely on his other kidney because he had already donayfed a kidney to save someone else.
*James used 'Blunt' because it is easier to pronounce from the spelling and apparently the Blount spelling is considered posh in Britain.

That is his father, Charles, in the Video. This was recorded before his father had a Kidney Transplant in January 2020, which was only months after he recorded this Song. It was to show his love & support for his father in the best way he knew how. His father came through the surgery & is living well with James Mother. His cousin (Also Charles Blount), was a compatible match. I'm a 63 year old married Aussie bloke & it brings tears to my eyes. I lost my mother to Kidney Failure, so it's close to home. Fabulous song, awesome singer & brilliant performance.

I've said it before and it is still true. At approximately 4:00 of your video, James sings "you can feel my hand, on your arm" - yet it is his Dad who puts his hand on James' arm. And does it again at the very end of the song. Although the song is about the son comforting the father, the father is still comforting the son. This gets me, every time!

There is another emotional song that shows the singer’s face up like that, and that is Nothing Compares to You Sinead O’Connor. It’s totally ok to cry. That’s what makes you human. I can imagine it feels invasive and you must feel self-conscious, but you have got to let your body speak in these times and just let loose. Who cares if your mascara runs or you get a runny nose or you make the weirdest sounds when you cry, letting the tears come and escape your body is the best thing for you. I lost my Momma 4 years ago to Melanoma Cancer. Although I cried myself dry then, I have ocasional times still when I “ugly” cry for her. Let me tell you, letting it out does make it better. I’m sure the majority of us don’t judge you and are very supportive of you both. Letting go and crying just makes you one of us, your RUclips FAMILY.

Ladies, a little background...both James and his father were former officers in the British military. This was the first time James had sung the song to his dad and he refused to use 'Auto-Tune' because he wanted this to be absolutely genuine and 100% because at the time of recording, his fathers prospects were not good, suffering stage 4 kidney disease. I heard James donated all the proceeds from this song to the amazing UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much wonderful work for ex-servicemen and servicewomen. He's a remarkable young man and frankly, I have no idea how he managed to hold himself together so well for this video. Under the same circumstances, I couldn't have done the same.

His dad was diagnosed with stage 4 chronic kidney disease, and he only had one kidney having donated one, no suitable donner had been found. His dad had been an Army Colonel, and as a young officer James went off to war in Bosnia - it was his dad who said "we are just too grown men saying goodbye" as his parting words. Deliberate raw, emotional single take. Lots of tears - except from his father, who was hearing this for the first time, just said "why is everybody crying? I'm dead yet." It did the job - because this song found a suitable donner. Powerful.

James' recording company wanted him to use 'Auto-Tune' but he refused because he wanted this to be 100% real and a genuine final message to his dad, who'd only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease, and he desperately need to find a donor (which he eventually did, thank God). I heard that James donated all the proceeds from this video to the amazing UK Charity 'Help For Heroes' who do such incredible work with ex-servicemen and service women I don't know how he managed to hold himself together as well as he did, although there are still a few wobbly notes sung towards the end. Yes, it was his father, Charles. The thing to remember is that James and his dad are upper class (posh) hence why you hear the poshness of his voice coming through. Both of them previously served in the British Army as officers. James was a Captain and his dad was a Colonel. James served in the Kosovo war (in the Balkans) in '99, and the line, "we are just two grown men saying goodbye" is what James said to his dad as he was being shipped off. Being they are upper class, they tend to be very stoic, hence why by the end James as tears streaming down his cheeks, his dad places his hand on his arm. This is very typical behaviour of the upper class.
After this record was released, James had ALL proceeds go to a British charity; Help For Heroes, which caters to the veterans.

The line 'You're my your son, I'm not your father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye' was first spoken between them when they parted as James left for frontline (often ahead of the frontline) service in Bosnia, in 1999. James spent six years serving in the British Army, as a Troop Commander in an Armoured Recce Regt. He served with the Blues & Royals in Bosnia and has written other songs about the horrors he saw there. His father had been similarly a cavalry officer, before being made Colonel of the Army Air Corps.

He writes mainly from his personal experiences "No bravery" being one from the Balkans campaign with footage from the area.you can hear the anger and frustration in his voice.

Love Watching People React to this Song. James Blunt is a Musical Genius 😉 You Should check out more of his Songs, such as "If Time Is All I Have" and "Carry You Home" to name 2️⃣ of So Many 😊👍

This song loterally saved James's father's life, it was because of the song that a distant relative got tested and was a match to donate a kidney.
The whole thing was done live, and James told his dad, he had to get it right because he'd only be able to do it once. At the end everyone was in tears except his father who said "why's everyone in tears, I'm still here".
Also the record company wanted to use autotune to take out the cracks in James voice and he wouldn't let them, as he wanted it to be genuine and just the way it came out.

It's a really beautifully sad masterpiece. Makes you realise that blood is truly thicker than water.
If you haven't listened to Barcelona by Freddie Mercury from Queen. This is another incredible song made at a time when he knew he didn't have long to live

James Blunt saw action in the Balkans as a captain in the guards. Another poignant song is ‘carry you home’ which touched on one of the outcomes of his duties as a commanding officer.

James thought it was a shame to write a eulogy for someone and then for them not to hear it. He said they did this five times, twice with his father. But it's a very powerful song and what a way to say goodbye, even if it wasn't. James called his father 'a good looking dude' - I'll give him that.

I remember saying goodbye to my dad knowing it was the last time I would see him alive because he was within a month of passing. He went peacefully and I was glad about that and he was ready. Throat cancer

This song resonates with me but in an absolutely opposite way. I was diagnosed with stage 4 liver failure (non alcoholic fatty liver disease) and being faced with one's mortality it really puts things intro retrospect. I don't have children, and sadly never will now.. but I've been going around and just watching people's reactions to this. Life is far more fragile than most realize, especially when it's just too late.. love that you do these reactions with your mother! She is a gem, an you are absolutely beautiful and can see where you got it. I wish you the best

It was his goodbye song to his Dad. He had terminal kidney disease. He fortunately got a transplant and recovered. Filmed in 1 take with no auto tune. Always get a lump in throat watching this video

Heartwrenching video and reaction. If you want another good cry, try Dont throw it all away, live from the Bee Gees (89 I think). Its a tribute to baby Bee Gee Andy Gibb with home video thrown into the mix. Pulls at the heartstrings every time.

He did this on one take. The producers wanted to redo the parts where he cried and he said don't you dare. Everyone was crying be the end and dad said, I'm not dead yet.
