You are a LIFE SAVER!!!! I'm autistic and I can't stand the carpeting these cheap landlords be using to cover up the damaged floors. And because of that I tend to just stay on my bed or a chair as of the carpet was hot lava. Just by sharing your experience, you've shot rocketed my mental health and physical health. Thank you thank you
I'm so glad I could help! Please consider using 1/4 inch plywood under the linoleum flooring to make it more stable I didn't do that in this video so the carpet underneath made the floor squishy so it broke after awhile but if you place the plywood on top of the carpet and duck tap it together making a sort of floating sub floor the linoleum on top will have more more stability and last longer :)
There's a lot of hate in these comments. I did have to turn up the volume, but i also found your voice soothing. Your amazing, you did an amazing job. PLEASE PLEASE, don't let these comments get you down. People are nasty. I found your video VERY helpful. I have kids and pets. My last rental we had to pay to replace all the carpet because it got tore up so bad from 3 years of living there. Your here to give help and insight, and thats exactly what you did. Thank you so much. Please ignore the people "having a bad day" 🙄
Thank you for watching it! I probably would do this a bit different if I did it again, like I'd add some 1/2 inch plywood above the carpet and duck tape it together as a sub floor kind of thing before putting the linoleum on top if I did this again.
@@ShelyHomeDesign hi the perfect solution without those additional steps are grip-strip planks: IMPORTANT QUESTION! I was told that the moisture will get trapped and cause mold. Is that true? Did you experience anything like this? I put the roll out vinyl and I wish I had your email to show you how it turned into a disaster after 4 years. Please get back to me about the mold/ moisturize potential 🙏🙏
This carpet was quite plush, so it didn't age the best, but if you make a floating subfloor with plywood and tape the plywood together floating on the carpet it'll give you a smooth hard surface for the linoleum
That's what I thought too. But this does have drawbacks, you need to place a gard surface under the vinyl and above the carpet to not get tearing in the vinyl
I didn't know about that hard board/Yucca board? Even if it's not ideal for this project, I can imagine some other good DIY uses for such a board because it sounds stronger than cardboard. I wonder where I could get it. Edit, I just found out it's euca board which is named for eucalyptus not yucca. I found a variety of websites selling it and similar items.
In this project, I simply dick taped the hard board pieces together and then added the linoleum on top only taping the edged down leaving it mostly floating
I chose to use hardboard instead of plywood, it was about 16 per 8 by 4 sheet, and I used around 8 ish sheets, I didn't do the whole floor with it, however plywood would work much better. The flooring I got on sale and the total for that was around 300 dollars!
Thanks for making this video! Definitely have a new subscriber here. Couple of quick ?s: -Where did you buy the hardwood vinyl roll? -And how much did it cost? Thx 🙏
Need hard substrate cannot just put Lino over carpet because carpet isn’t flat - ! I tried that and from experience can say that it doesn’t work - def need to put Lino on a hard floor to work also make sure edges are waterproof to prevent decay of floor underneath
I actually mentioned that before. I used eucaboard underneath but as I mentioned in other comments I'd recommend plywood instead. The this lino has lasted 2 years now and is still looking good :)
I did overlap it, and then used clear packing tape over the overlap, however I'm not super happy with this project. I think it would be better to use thin plywood underneath the vinyl and above the carpet and then tape the plywood together to create a fake subfloor for the vinyl to go over. It'll last longer that way and be more lile a proper floor.
As a person with rental property I hope you asked your landlord first. I had a tenant who did this and after they left the carpet was totally destroyed underneath because it was flattened out so much. Also moisture got down there.
I did this to protect the carpet underneath since I have cats and it was already in bad shape, I've also done this before and never had a problem! Plus California is very dry. Thanks for your concern! ❤
Carpet is disgusting, just put in hardwood floors and stop making your tenants live in subpar conditions. Or better yet, sell the home to a person who wants to own it and live in it and build equity! Stop robbing other people of the dignity of owning just because you can't figure out a productive way to make money. Abolish landlords!
Ive had a lot of comments like this, I honestly didn't mean to irritate anyone and I'm sorry. I definitely will speak up a lot more in any future videos I do!

Youre totally intitled to that option! I personally think it would have been better if I used plywood underneath and did mention that in the video! Next time I do this that's what I'll do, but since I didn't have a job or much money at the time of this video I made due with what I had, and it made keeping the floor clean a lot easier! 🥰
I see buckles in this and that looks very poorly done. Why not go find some cheap new carpet and install it yourself. If someone wants to rent that the way it looks they will probably eventually not pay rent. Some things you just can't cut corners on and if you do you get what you pay for. Good luck with your rental 🎉
I'm the renter, and i did this mainly to make it easier to clean, but I agree it wasn't perfect, so I went in later and created a sub floor with thin plywood and duck taped the peices together floating on the carpet and under the linoleum, it fixed the problem and it still looks fine 2 years later
Ahhh! Understood! I was thinking you had a scum bag landlord. But you wanted a different look for yourself and easy to remove! I wasn't trying to be rude😊 but I completely understand why you chose this route now and I'm glad your happy with your alterations. 🎊
This video is really great for installing a hard floor over a carpet for a rental, hence why I said exactly that! 💯 but I appreciate your comment for the algorithm! Thanks! Maybe next time don't use profanities in a public comment.

I purchased the flooring from home depot
