Im from Hungary. Back in 2007, I read in a magazine's concert recommendatory section titled "The Gallallaghers (Oasis) favourite band is playing in Budapest!". Well, I didn't went to the concert, but I checked the band's music. The first song I listened to was called 'Club Foot', of course by Kasabian ;) Seen them 3x live since, so you are right.
Agree with the write a chorus part. What modern band or artist has written a chorus as amazing as the Masterplan, Sad Song or Cast No Shadow? People slag Noel off for ripping off riffs but his vocal melodies (arguably much harder to come up with than riffs) are hands down up there with Paul McCartney and Ray Davies.
One thing I disagree with Noel about... the internet does not make exposure easier. Equal access means there are millions more seeking the same attention and therefore making it just as difficult as 1991
I'm of the same generation as his daughter. Perhaps I'm in a minority but I obsess over albums and the small details of them. I listen to mainly older music so that is perhaps why-it is worth obsessing about. If his daughter is glued to her phone, doesn't know about artwork and only knows of singles, I think it says more about her than it does a whole generation! I hate it when then generalise! If young people love good music, then they look for it. I don't think being young and having a phone is an excuse to being into boring people and crap music- it just shows your disinterest in it.
The majority of kids are exactly like he described. Not all of them, but the majority are exactly like that. It doesn't mean it's bad, it just means it's a different approach to things.
1:15 That's an interesting point, but I don't think its really true. A few artists I've seen locally are truly great and should make it, but you've got to be in the right time for your music.
Just a heads up, the internet doesn't always make any good band famous like he mentions above. The internet is absolutely overwhelmingly full of musicians that you have to wade through a lot of shit to find that golden nugget, especially in a mainstream format like pop/rock. Some genres thrive with the use of the internet, but even then it gets a bit too crowded eventually and makes it difficult. The problem now is that rock music is increasingly losing relevance. There hasn't really been anything new since grunge and britpop, or any "scene/movement" since the various revivals in the early 2000's of post punk, garage rock, etc. We just need something new with a bunch of bands involved, and hey presto, you'll have something you can get a bunch of kids attached to.
You can argue the opposite about the internet though. It's so ridiculously saturated with musicians and bands that there must be a lot of hidden gems in the huge 99.9% pile of shit that is on the internet. Many of which will get lost.
I think the internet has been worse for music business in my opinion. Sure you can reach millions, but that argument killed the labels and nowadays theres like almost no people interested in managing artists and getting band signed. Where I live there are 0 Pop Rock music labels. So great bands that have great song have nowhere to go because there aren't options and it sucks being all day on the internet trying to promote a song that at the end of the day it's almost stuck in 100 plays.

The state of music is awful. I haven't even been able to switch on the radio for at least a decade.
I agree with you, except I think kids Do want rock stars, they just aren't given the chance to have them! With the music industry being in shambles now the big record companies and advertisers want safe, pop acts that they know for a fact they can get a return on their investment (ie: someone the whole family will love). They don't want to take a chance on someone controversial or a little crazy, they want "safe"... So the kids don't have anyone current to get excited about, because it's not even an option in mainstream music anymore, it's actually sad IMO

great interview and I agree with most of it. the part where he says the Internet makes it easy for great artist to become noticed and successful, not so much. back in Noels day everything was simply. there was a lot more record labels and a lot less music. now days everything's up in the air with bands anyway, cd/records don't sell the way they used too and anything that u can sell now can be illegally bought online so...
Yes ...the internet gives you ability to get your product out there instantly. It also oversaturates the market. Any crap band can put out an album ...putting an album out twenty ...thirty years ago was a huge endeavor, and you had better be pretty good to put that much money and effort into it.
Well yes and no, nobody today is looking bands on the internet, it's the telly and live gigs still that matter on that behalf, but more likely it's that becuz of the internet you can download anything you want, so even if you were a good at playing music, you can't work as a musician and since you can't work as a musician, you don't produce that good or that much songs and the thing kinda eventually fades away as a phase in life...
2:25 No. That's just the way it was done. If there was another option? Then you'd have been FORCED to do it the "hard way" as opposed to the non-existent "easy way".
I disagree with the idea that it's just the songs that are keeping people from breaking out and making it big. If a song is on the radio- even if you hate it- you're going to hear it eventually. and then you'll likely hear it again. and again. and proceed to hear it so many times over the next few weeks that you'll be humming it, despite once hating it. That's force-fed media in my eyes. They play songs so frequently that they _become_ hits, even if they're just over-produced trash that is only on the radio because some big wig record label put up a shit tonne of money to distribute it/force it on the public. On the internet, however, you have to actively seek it out and make the effort to hear things. You could have amazing localized groups/musicians with only 5000 views on their RUclips videos. If people don't know you exist, you aren't going to be searched for/found. So you need that traditional mainstream breakout/connection for people to even know to Google you in the first place. Despite arguably being the most accessed medium for entertainment going at the moment, the internet is so broad and so huge that it's easy to be a needle in a haystack. Almost any amateur musician can record a decently-professional album in their home, auto-tune the shit out of it, and publish it for free on the internet. There is such a vast ocean of media to tread through now because of that; It's easy to be overwhelmed as a casual listener and be unwilling to have a proper listen to everything you happen to come across (as opposed to it being force-fed to you on the radio).
This is where I'd argue record labels can really help a band. They can get a band with a dedicated following to more people. But still, I think a lot of people don't realize how much needs to be put into making a song.
I don't consider myself a pop music fan but every now and then I'll hear something on the radio that sounds kinda catchy and yeah, I'll find myself humming it. But once I've heard it every day for two weeks straight, that's the point where I immediately hate it. You could take my favourite song and play it on the radio every day and I would start to hate it pretty quickly.
Noel has been there and done that. He's done the partying, he's played to massive crowds and been a key member in Oasis, the best band in the world at one point.
Completely disagree with the point that if your band are amazing, you'll definitely make it. Simply not true, being in the right place at the right time gets you places, thousands of INCREDIBLE bands don't make it.
Thats bullshit. Name a great band that hasnt make it, i'll wait. Noel is absolutely right here, there isnt a great rock band in the world, there isnt a great rock song. Dont come with the "luck" factor, what you need are SONGS.
Oasis have well written songs but the Stone Roses are far better. Oasis is good to sing along to but TSR have so much more soul and atmosphere. They elevate you a lot more.
brandon mcgaw Well, it's quite subjective. I personally tried to get in to The Stone Roses and mainly because I love I wanna be adored.. but only just few songs speak to me and tbh.. The Stone Roses are all about one album anyway :).
+brandon mcgaw I do really love the Stone Roses, and their first album is absolute god-tier, but it was lightning in a bottle. Oasis managed to make two incredible albums (three if you include The Masterplan) and a few more great ones. So I'd say purely on longevity and consistency, Oasis wins. Noel's definitely proved himself to be a much better songwriter, because even now with High Flying Birds he's still making gold while Ian Brown is doing fuck all.
HAve to admit. I've have never been a fan of the Gallagher brothers as people. I've always hated there "attitude" however, I have to agree with everything he is saying here (with the exception of who is the best band to come out of Manchester!)
I would have to agree with Noel here, it really is about the songs. I've strayed from American rock bands because they sound so plain these days. My favorite band right now is a Japanese rock band called ART SCHOOL. If anybody is interested look them up, they’re fantastic. The first song you should listen to is Lost In The Air.
At the same time while the internet is everywhere, it is increasingly harder to find new bands. Everyone is in their own corner including the fans. The people are not enthusing about a new band rubbing the record in your face going "you gotta listen this !" It is about being cool with plugs in the ear with perhaps 500 others around the world that make no impact on the rest.
@@benrowless nah the smiths beat them all by a landslide, in the very short 5 year span they were together, they made some of the best music ever. As much as I love Oasis, they don't comes close to the smiths, 4 great albums and 3 almost perfect ones.
@@keysersoze657 I mean your far from wrong that’s a valid point. I guess a problem with oasis was that after their first couple albums they were only making some good tunes the rest of the album I can’t be arsed with
@@benrowless I love their first two albums, they have hit after hit on each one. But I prefer any of the big three smiths albums to them. The Smiths resonate with me more in terms of lyrics and I mean it's safe to say there's no comparision to Noel Gallagher and Johnny Marr for guitar playing, Johnny is one of the best ever. Oasis did conquer the world and The Smiths didn't achieve as much as them in global success but I think the actual music The Smiths made is a lot better.
Love a NG interview. He knows what he's talking about and is very interesting to listen to. As for the interviewer, Im unsure of his name but Ive seen a few interviews with him and he is absolutely brilliant.
For me, Tame Impala, and Little Comets are the best bands around now. If anyone could suggest a third band that could be held in equal esteem, I would be most grateful
When I was a kid and got an album I’d have to keep listening to it coz didn’t have many others and I’d spent a lot of money on it. The amount of albums I’d have to listen to a lot before I got into it is quite a few and nowadays I wouldn’t have bothered! People can’t appreciate it the same these days!
I disagree that the internet would find the great unsigned bands & unreleased songs as there are millions of bands uploading their material online.. the competition is very high & the chance of a large audience listening to your unsigned band is about the same odds as the old 'needle in a haystack '.
Shame there's not as much people who spend much on cover art nowadays. Some photography and design on covers is amazing. The cover of the first HFB album was great
it just shows how music has become Oasis split up why there no band like Oasis to replace Oasis. Years ago there was always another band to replace a band.
Noel is alright, but I disagree with basically everything he is saying here. "If Oasis would've had the internet...", they would've been swallowed-up by it, and "just another band", frankly.
revolutionday1 yeah that's the thing now, bands have all these tools and tech at their disposal, but that just means that everyone else does too and people are overwhelmingly flooded with new bands and songs all the time, and are jaded
I think he meant if the internet was as frequently used as it is now during the 90's, then Oasis would of been "bigger than the universe" in that context I think he meant it by.
THthefirst you're saying that like ACDC didn't do the same thing but with sex and drugs themed songs. They're still a great band for what they are: a sex and drugs band. Not every musician needs to evolve to be good. Changing for the sake of others shouldn't be a requirement of greatness.
That's pretty dumb to be honest. There is good music out there, it isn't the music that's the problem. Record labels are the ONLY ones who determine what is popular, they hold all the cards. They'd rather play it safe. They couldn't care less about good music, all they want to promote is what will sell, which is crap pop. It isn't the songs, it is the audience and the industry
ActionStudios4 That's kind of what he was talking about, he mentions the days of independent labels run by guys like Daniel Miller, Alan McGhee and Tony Wilson where great music was getting put out there, but nobody has the passion to do that anymore so it's all gone back to the big labels putting out 100% of the music
As much as I think Noel wrote some great songs I think he's out of touch of how it really works for today's unknown musicians, you can't just write great songs with great choruses and put it online and people come running, that's simply not how it works, without those songs being played on major radio stations like Oasis were then people simply do not know you exist, they are not aware of you, that's what record labels used to do for bands promotion, without that your dead in the water mate
+GoldenSunX Average band with not that many good tunes. Lucky they have Dave Fridmann mixing their stuff because he is incredible and can literally polish a turd. Not that they're a turd, they're alright but they owe a hell of a lot to Mr Fridmann, he is the one who shapes their whole sound. And their soundscape is far more impressive than the songs.
Here's a good example of what he means: ruclips.net/p/PL1StK4aSSWe5SNHH0BA7aXM8XWrb7BEqa All tracks in this list, I couldn't even remember what they all looked like. But their songs and sounds, those I remember!
I would absolutely love to argue with Noel in this one. I wish he was right, but it's all about fucking marketing. Music barely even matters anymore. You can have the best songs in the world, doesn't matter shit if you don't sell and more importantly if they're not heard. Then he speaks about the Internet like if we were a click away from everybody, the point is HOW TO REACH everybody. There are millions of bands in the same situation, competing for attetion.
Noel is arrogant in a way that makes me just love him. He takes pride in everything that he does and I believe that is the attitude everyone should have.
1. New Order, 2. The Stone Roses, 3. The Smiths, 4. The Buzzcocks, 5. Joy Division... Oasis might make the lower end of the top 10 if i can fit them in between A Certain Ratio and Frank Sidebottom...
Its not just as simple as putting a great song online and it going viral, you we're very lucky Mr McGee mist his train, most bands dont get that break!
attitude is part of the oasis design. It wasnt good enough for them to be another band bringing out a kind of pop art video clip as Liam stated. Noel also stated in Esquire how they spoke to certain people telling them how they ought to do it. Even if noels was more refined. If it wasnt about that.. they arent everything in comparison.
Dave Grohl basically has the same advice - write good songs. Unfortunately this is not enough to just upload good songs to the internet. You still need promotion to get exposure. It's not like every good song that is uploaded is automatically sent to the listener's mailbox. The audience has to search hard to find this stuff. In the old days, labels took care of everything except the songwriting - videos, radio, TV, distribution. Now it's the artist that has to do it. And it's still not cheap to shoot a decent video, and you still have to pay for clicks. However, there is a bright side to it to. There are websites where you can get exposure for free such as soundcloud.com. There are youtube channels that feature independent music and it gets at least some exposure, such as ruclips.net/channel/UCEi0EgWJ5m7gVBQ68a1L0TA. But for those who are waiting for big bands, such as Oasis, to come along, I have some bad news - not gonna happen! The reason is Internet is huge, but it is very fragmented. Labels were a single source that does not exist any more. Now it's the long tail marketing - it's very specific, it's very segmented, and the amount of music is overwhelming - so it seems unlikely that the music world will be dominated by a single band or a single genre any time in the future. In case you like indie rock - check out my channel soundcloud.com/teenage-manager
Wish Noel had his own tv music show. Could promote new bands.

He completely gets it!
He's right about young bands losing independence and creative thought due to the increasing commercializing of music and death of indie record labels.
Noel Gallagher, he's a funny guy. I love him.
Riko442 listen to breaking into heaven, love spreads, tears, and begging you, that will turn you over to the second coming album lol
Noel's definitely proved himself to be a much better songwriter, because even now with High Flying Birds he's still making gold while Ian Brown is doing fuck all.
dig out your soul is amazing in my opinion
HAve to admit. I've have never been a fan of the Gallagher brothers as people. I've always hated there "attitude" however, I have to agree with everything he is saying here (with the exception of who is the best band to come out of Manchester!)
*I love how everything noel says here is the complete opposite of what he said 25 years ago.*
You mean things have changed after 25 years 😮
I would have to agree with Noel here, it really is about the songs.
My man crush since the 90’s. Blass you NG. Chat show host of the future
The stone roses were the second best band to come out of manchester.
Are you the first?
No, The Smiths are.
Nope, The Fall are.
I’d say oasis were the best out of Manchester then stone roses then smiths
So inspiring x
For me, Tame Impala, and Little Comets are the best bands around now. If anyone could suggest a third band that could be held in equal esteem, I would be most grateful
When I was a kid and got an album I’d have to keep listening to it coz didn’t have many others and I’d spent a lot of money on it. The amount of albums I’d have to listen to a lot before I got into it is quite a few and nowadays I wouldn’t have bothered! People can’t appreciate it the same these days!
Noel... WE'RE HERE!
Noel himself once said he never said no comment on anything and God bless him for that.
Check out our Madchester band, not from Manchester. It's weird I know.
Completely agree with him from my bones. Its not the attitude its not the spirit. it has to be the music first.
Well he didn't have enough meetings on the artwork for Chasing Yesterday that's for sure
I disagree that the internet would find the great unsigned bands & unreleased songs as there are millions of bands uploading their material online.. the competition is very high & the chance of a large audience listening to your unsigned band is about the same odds as the old 'needle in a haystack '.
Brilliant advice
Shame there's not as much people who spend much on cover art nowadays. Some photography and design on covers is amazing. The cover of the first HFB album was great
Can someone please recommend bands or artists like oasis I recently discovered them and o want to explore more into it.
Thanks Noel. For giving me advice😄
chameleons uk were a great band ! bands from the mid eighties and early nineties from the uk were great.
0:49 what about Royal Blood
it just shows how music has become Oasis split up why there no band like Oasis to replace Oasis. Years ago there was always another band to replace a band.
J o n a t h a n im comming lol
I love him, Johhny Rotten and him should collaborate...well at least do a talk show. :D
This must’ve been just before Catfish broke on the scene and he hadn’t heard of them
What's a drum?
Dunno ask it
As much as i like u Noel, we all now the 1st is THE SMITHS. You now it as well
5:03 *greatest band to come out of not just Manchester, but the world
Nothing in the UK? Biffy Clyro seems to be doing well.
+revolutionday1 agreed. He's wrong here. very very wrong. I think it's a generational thing.
THthefirst you're saying that like ACDC didn't do the same thing but with sex and drugs themed songs. They're still a great band for what they are: a sex and drugs band. Not every musician needs to evolve to be good. Changing for the sake of others shouldn't be a requirement of greatness.
Foals Noel... Foals, unbelievable band
He is a big fan of them. Surprised he failed to mention them.
I wonder what his opinions are on Tame Impala.
And their soundscape is far more impressive than the songs.
i wonder what he thinks of lumineers
Here's a good example of what he means: ruclips.net/p/PL1StK4aSSWe5SNHH0BA7aXM8XWrb7BEqa All tracks in this list, I couldn't even remember what they all looked like. But their songs and sounds, those I remember!
Get the tunes, then get the look, then get the money
Oceansize is the best band to come out of Manchester.
There are millions of bands in the same situation, competing for attetion.
gotta also keep in mind that not all of those bands whos competing for attention for good songs
Noel is arrogant in a way that makes me just love him. He takes pride in everything that he does and I believe that is the attitude everyone should have.
Brilliant interview. Were you the first?.... there you go
Legend!
He is right
Check out The Snuts best band in Scotland they don't have songs they have Anthems. Mega young band
I guess Noel hasn't heard anything by Catfish and the bottlemen yet. They are pretty solid.
1. New Order, 2. The Stone Roses, 3. The Smiths, 4. The Buzzcocks, 5. Joy Division... Oasis might make the lower end of the top 10 if i can fit them in between A Certain Ratio and Frank Sidebottom...
Hypnodelica, That's ok Grandpa.
Hypnodelica LOL
Hypnodelica New Order. Lolz
Bands out of Manchester:
1. The Smiths
2. Oasis
3. Stone Roses
Gyro Vision
1. Oasis
2. Stone Roses
3. Smiths
Oasis are leaps and bounds ahead of everyone, they are up there with The Beatles, Zeppelin and Queen
He's funny and at the same time spot on. He's witty like Lennon. Liam might have the Lennon looks, but Noel has the brain.
Names 01:50
Much knowledge!
the smiths were the best band to come out of Manchester.and noel knows that!!!!!!
Noel is a legend
i cant help but think of bands like catfish and the bottlemen and the 1975 when i here this interview...
Too true. Generic "indie" bands who were marketed like hell to appeal to the "indie" crowd. Wonder what noel thinks of those bands?
He failed to mention catfish and the Bottlemen.
The question was: what good bands are there,.......Thats why!!
I don't mind catfish, but they're no save rock and roll band.
Same boat as the DMAs I guess
Pony band
it's all about songs. yes! so why do albums matter?
Spot on noel !
Noel is the best.
3 years later he was at a killers concet
The Smiths were the third best band out of Manchester then? I think I would definitely put them above the Stone Roses.
How can Noel say that when Courteeners and DMA’s exist
EMI music was a good record label...
RIP emi (1931-2012)
