- Episode 13 - This week on the show, I review Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl on the NES, which are both classics that you undoubtedly played if you grew up in the 80's. I also take a look at Tecmo Super Bowl 2014 from the good folks at TecmoBowl.org, which gives you the same great game but with updated rosters!

this game is immortal. it still holds up today in terms of gameplay and replayability.
Yeah, it's still probably my favorite football game (the first one). TSB is the better of the two games, but I grew up playing the original.
Pretty much we used to keep our wii just so we could play tecmo bowl on the virtual console. I do have to say that super tecmo bowl was a huge improvement.
Tecmo SUPER bowl, yes. This, nah.
Loved Tecmo Bowl.
But I was absolutely obsessed with Super Bowl. To the point where I would call in sick to work the first few weeks after purchase
Talk about taking the Browns to the super bowl lol.
As a diehard Raider fan I have one name for you. Bo Jackson.
lets not count out willie gault and sam graddy as they were the 2nd fastest on the team offense(also eddie anderson their safety had the same speed).
I have another name for you. The "Nigerian-Nightmare" Christian Okoye
War Eagle!!
I ate his lunch tho...
As a fellow raiders fan, I completely fuckin agree. Bo was unstoppable, you'd murder your friend if you broke the tackle with bo
Tecmo Super Bowl was sooooo far ahead of its time, it felt like a slightly elevated version of the NES. I still look forward to the updated versions each year that get posted online.
As a kid in Chicago it was awesome to be da Bears from the 80's lineup.
Dave Blake my childhood
The stats were everything in this game. My friends and I would try to break each others season records time and time again.
And try to achieve the individual game trifecta; 100 yd rusher, 150 yd receiver and 300 yd passer. You would get a notification when you achieved the neccessary yardage.
Being 48 years old I remember seeing this game for the first time and thinking the graphics were just so awesome.
Dang pops, are you on switch now? I’ll send my friend code. Do you like Pokemon?
@@The.Original.Potatocakes I'm not on switch and I don't care for pokemon.
best football of all time
Relative to any era's available technology and comparable products at its given time- Tecmo SB takes the award for GOAT sports video game. Ever. Period. (RBI baseball 2nd place)
The game is still better than Madden.
@Santino - i bet you a year from now no ones going to be playing madden 20 or calling it a classic
Fr
@@keyset614 maybe not 1 year but 2
@Santino - you're
@Santino - tecmo bowl is better
I play this game to this day. Always my favorite & this game will never go out of style. HTTR 4 LIFE!!!
Like archie bunker says," those where the days"! My best game all time
This was pretty much the first game in anything that you could play a season where it kept/tracked team and player stats, so I guess I kind of take offense with your "who cares" attitude when it came to this...this was the INNOVATOR and brand new in 1991.
Not sure what makes you think that I had a "who cares" attitude other than the fact that I don't yell & scream about how awesome everything is. Too old for that stuff, sorry.
You said regarding the stats "which serves no real purpose, but can be fun to look at..." sounds rather ho-hum to me, when again it was ground breaking at the time.
MvG Sports I agree with my statement 100%.
+MvG Sports Maybe you shouldn't take offense to something so trivial as someones opinion on a video game. Sounds like you still have some serious growing up to do.
+T. Riley Roo
I think "take offense" can be used interchangably with "I think you're wrong". If anything, you have growing up to do by judging someone for disagreeing with the almighty OP
granted, I know it'll always be an echo chamber when it comes to comment threads where the video creator is arguing with someone
Love the tecmo bowl series🏈
Every place was sold out, so my Mom got me John Elway football instead. I remember it like it was yesterday. Tecmo was WAY more fun. I eventually got this too.
Shawn Crowe damn that sucks...John Elway’s Quarterback was ass
John Elway had a reverse play that was unstoppable. You ran around in the backfield for a second and then got superspeed. Way faster than Bo in tecmo. Score every single time.
I bought Elway recently for $2.50 and I felt ripped off.
Eh it was ok
we had a game called "Touchdown Fever" for NES, same old story pretty much an ass game then our friend brought over TSB and it was like night and day how much better TSB was
Bo Jackson is who I think of when it comes to this game. Man that was a rule when me and my friends played each other that no one can choose the Raiders because of Bo Jackson. Lol
+CaptainN209 Right. It's like nobody being allowed to play as Chicago in NHL 94. Unfair advantage.
+Classic Gaming Quarterly Ya really, I almost forgot that game.
Y'all bums, I encouraged ppl to pick the raiders just so I can stop Bo... I'm the greatest tecmo player ever
Loved how you had to determine what player on D was best to control based on the opposing teams offensive attributes. Sometimes you’re in the box, sometimes you’re in the secondary.
This was near and dear to my heart..great game!!
I used to play this game after school every day in the 90s.
3:10 Elway drops back, no! he's running the opposite direction!! He uncorks a screamer at the 25 yard line......he's got a man....Mark Jackson's wide open.... he makes the catch and walks into the endzone...TOUCHDOWN!!!!
This game started and defined my love for football. I don't know what it was, something just clicked in my brain. Yeah, Tecmo Superbowl is better (in my opinion) but this is the one that started it all. and i know what you're thinking....a gamer that likes football??!!??!! what the actual hell?? but it is what it is i guess.
Some trivia... In Boyz in the Hood right before Doughboy (ice cube) and Ricky (Morris Chestnut) have their fight towards the end of the movie, Doughboy calls Ricky a Tecmo bowl playing beeeeeep lol
That's weird. How is that an insult?
@@CGQuarterly I read an interview that Ice Cube said he was nervous and just made up something on the spot. It was pretty funny!
Retro graphics are so hot right now! Anyway, I remember for my birthday my dad taking me to the local KB Toys to pick out two games for my birthday. Grabbed Tecmo Bowl and Kickle Cubicle. Both were great, but I spent countless hours on Tecmo Bowl. I was so into it, I even played through a couple seasons with a pen and paper by my side to track the offensive stats after every play. Now that seems like a ludicrous waste of time, but I loved it back then. Was oblivious to Tecmo Super Bowl's existence as we moved to Okinawa, Japan in 91 and the Super Famicom had just come out. Great video!
Tecmo Bowl 3 was cool way more plays. It had trades, first I remember in sports games. (might be wrong)
Yep. And the stat tracker actually made or broke you for the pro bowl. Injuries. I believe it had stats as far as how your players progressed or regressed throughout the season. So it still had arcade like play style but simulation season stuff.
@@ronburriii3895 I believe it had NFL records you could break as well
nice roger craig run! That was my team growing up too
My wife's little brother and I played the whole season against each other ending up in the Tecmo Super Bowl on the day of the playoff game Bills vs.Oilers and the huge comeback which we largely missed because the game was such a blowout at first. My Arizona Cardinals won the big game with Timm Rosenbaugh as game and season MVP, great memories.
Give me a Tecmo Super Bowl with a franchise mode, create a team, and create a player. A few more rule customization options and stuff such as that, and I'll never need another football game again.
Agreed
Funny, I just finished playing a season of Tecmo Super Bowl on an SNES emulator, then this video pops up.
I remember being the 1st person in the Hood with Techmo Bowl..... And my friends always wanted to borrow it......... So much I use to sing the words......” I ain’t got no Techmo!!!”
I'm in my forties and I'd still want smoke from any and all challenges 🤣49ers with Ronnie Lott 🥊💯
@@jonellhaney7162 Ding Ding🛎
Let’s get it!!!!
You ain’t said nothing
Tecmo Bowl I got for a rental, but still have it when the video store shut down. Tecmo Super Bowl I once borrowed from a cousin, but forgot to return it. I still have both to this day
The First Tecmo Bowl was always the Best
There was a play on there no one could stop i forget it now no matter what time you used , and could win 100 to 00 .
Forgot about tecmo bowl III: final edition. That was the best. The stats did mean something. Pro bowl.
The Famicon version makes SF unstoppable. I have a ROM with both the US version (WIth Dickerson) and the Famicon Version on the Same ROM with the ability to play as any of the 24 teams (12 on each ROM).
Me and my friends use to go nuts playing techno super bowl 1 time we brought the game system to the laundry mat and played while doing laundry
Great review, I played these two carts for hours. I never could get into Madden, it was just too technical. It's kind of a shame Nintendo only included Tecmo Bowl in the forthcoming NES Classic Edition. I guess they couldn't get the NFL rights. Still I hope another generation will play it and have fun with it.
Thanks! I'm glad that they included a Tecmo Bowl game, at least. I would have expected to see nothing but first-party games, so its good to see third-party games in the mix.
It was a nice surprise. I wish they could have added a couple more sports games like Blades of Steel in it and a SD card slot for roms.
wildbilltexas you can still add games on it. Not that hard. I heard some of the instructions are on on the Nintendo forum or something
Colin got a tan! NINERS!!!
Have to disagree with you, stat keeping, killer application. How many touchdowns did I throw to Rice in a season? And can I beat it next season? Now I know. I used to play this with my brother and neighbors and in multiplayer you better hide your controller or else they can peek and pick your play. Those bastards!
good times. also look out for slapping the controller out of your hand when they are losing.
Its too bad you didn't get into the 16bit ones. Tecmo3 is the best and is only missing a play editor. It has free agency and trades. Updated playbooks and create a player. Agile players would spin out of tackles E. Smith B Sanders. Power backs and full backs would drag players and push piles.
Facts i enjoyed this game thoroughly..especially the free agency part
@@bles05 TSB III is an underrated gem. I still love putting my Brownies back together with Kosar and running up the scores on every other team.
Is there anything good to be taken from the Playstation release? I've tried it like 3 times and I want to throw up each time, it's so ugly.
@@northcoasthelicam I had "Tecmo Super bowl II: Special Edition" for the SNES from 2014-the end of 2017, and the thing about that game is that you can play the 1992,'93, & '94 seasons, all with the corresponding roster for those season. Imagine the shock when I discovered this, and it made the game amazing for me. Another great thing was that the game is pretty rare, and I only paid 51$ for it on Amazon, and the cart was in like new condition!
Just got super tecmo bowl on eBay waiting
Did you get it yet or are you still waiting?
@@jebfullinwider4379 wow you know I actually have the 2021 version now 😂 one of my favorite games of all tome
wow the small cut scences in nfl super bowl look exactly like captain tsubasa on nes
same company.
bo jackson was the best player on T.B
+Luis “DenaBoy” Gonzalez He was banned in my group
No way. We had no idea!
Never played the fan updates but the original is still the best after all the remakes and SNES updated ones
+Liquid9281 Yeah, I never got into the 16-bit Tecmo Bowls, either. But you should check out the modernized TSBs. Thanks for watching!!
@@CGQuarterly don't know how you couldn't get into Tecmo Superbowl III: final edition. The game was great. I could easily list all the positives and really can't think of any negatives.
I spent many hours on this game and I dearly miss it.
The original game sort of predicted the future, On Tecmo Bowl one of Minnesota's running plays was a wide receiver end around, when Brad Childress was coaching the team in 2010ish he used that same play in real life almost every other snap
I remember getting 96 sacks in a season with Reggie White, exactly 6 sacks a game. I went 16-0 and breezed through the playoffs and won the Superbowl. Fun times!!
Chris you should definitely stalk a couple of the tournaments on the west coast an do some live commentary.
Greatest football game ever. Not close. NES owner from Day 1. Still get current customized ones...2020!
Awesome thanks for the great work Sir
Hey throwing to Montana was my dream also😆
as*
You know a game is good when after 30 years it's still considered one of the greatest games ever.
@5:00 The game keeping stats served no real purpose? ARE YOU KIDDING? That's why I continued playing the game long after the gameplay was stale. This was the first football game to track stats and for people who like that stuff (fantasy football anyone?) it was monumental.
Truly a classic NES sports game
In many ways NFL Blitz was a modern reinvention of Tecmo Super Bowl
The question is, when will we see a football game that evolves the game play further?
I'm kinda weird this way but I'll never forget my Tecmo Bowl password. It's NY vs DAL in the Tecmo Bowl and the password is "A43FFF27". Try it out, it works!
"I won the game, and now im gonna jump BO JACKSON!" -Peter Griffin
I'm the Raiders, I'm Bo Jackson.
I used to have Superbowl and I was a champ at that game
The only problem I had with super bowl was if you were player 2 you were at a disadvantage because the controls were inverted compared to player one. You had to do all your controls backwards from what you were used too.
RIP, Tecmobowl.org.
Nooooooooooooooooooo
Super Tecmo does allow you to swap out the plays in the offensive playbook.
I hate how you took one of the greatest features of TSB, the full season statistics tracking, and regarded it as something that serves "no real purpose." That was an incredible feat back in the day and is something that most sports fans really appreciate even today! I'm waiting for your usual snarky disagreement comment...
Not going to snarkily disagree. For me, the stat tracking serves no purpose. For you, it's one of the greatest features of the game. Different strokes, and whatnot. At least this time you didn't tell me that you wanted to throat-punch me.
Classic Gaming Quarterly Lol sorry about that, yeah that was a bit harsh. Actually, I really do appreciate your videos, you're doing a good job. You don't hear that enough, especially from me. I'll try to be more positive, even when you say Guh-LAW-guh... 😂
Two of the best football video games ever made….period.
Niners for life I got to get this one
back in the day... you were GOD if you owned this game. 💗
So true!! We would knock at my chilhood friend's door like an angry mob, until his mother reluctantly opened the door & let all 7 or 8 of us kids in to play tecmo bowl!!
YALL be sleeping on walter payton
"would have"? It is undoubtedly the best football game ever made. Followed by NFL 2k1
Nice vid mate. Love that game still do. :)
I'm curious as to why you are a 49ers fan, did you grow up there? I thought you live in the Chicago area.
+MetalmaT No, I live in Northern California.
3:20 I was today years old when I learned Seattle was in OG Tecmo Bowl. QB12 Philadelphia is the GOAT.
With them pastel unis lol. Steve Largent and Kenny Easley FTW
Back when they were still AFC West too.
I always shot for season bests like sacks
Thank you!
One year i rushed for 3,812 yards with Bo. He was fucking awesome.
You could change the playbook though I did it all the time
You go to the last option and then you can, change your plays permanently for a season
I remember o g tecmo bowl and o g tecmo super bowl for one reason bo Jackson
“That’s it, I’m hitting ‘Reset’!”
On the original Techmo Bowl did the Raiders have 3 running plays?
I know Bo had a play and Marcus Allen had a play..... because the way I see it. I’m calling Bo Jackson’s play on Defense every time.
no, Bo had one play and Allen had one play along with 2 useless pass plays
Go 9ers!
Tecmo Super Bowl still holds up. The original, not so much
Super is all you need
Barry sanders was the leading rusher for me.
As a Seahawks fan, it disapoints me that cheer for the 9ers.
I remember the first tecmo bowl all the players lined up like dogs
No mention of Bo?
Great games awesome review!
The greatest football game ever
Ugh, Colin Kapernick?! You need to edit that out now. LOL
Why's that?
@@CGQuarterly I'm just joking around. I don't like the guy much is all. I had NO idea they were doing updates to tecmo bowl to this day. That is AWESEOME!
Dope
Gotta get Bo Jackson! Lol
im here because nes nintendo switch online =)
Why isn’t Bo Jackson on my tecmo super bowl…???
I played tecmo bowl in the arcade with nfl teams. please help me identify what i played?!
Tecmo Bowl arcade only had two teams and they were not NFL teams. Maybe you are thinking of NFL Blitz?
The only sports game in my collection for my nes.. well maybe punch out.
Can I add the newest version to my Everdrive? Rosters etc
Yes, absolutely.
No Raiders, that’s it.
Can you put this rom on your nes classic?
Um dude, it has a play editor!!!!
I'm the greatest tecmo player ever!!!
Idk about outclassed i. Every way the players are smaller then in the 1st game so....
7 years late but here goes: Seems like cheating to use Boldin on the 49ers to replay that Super Bowl. But on to the game...while there was no game editor, there were playbooks and depth charts. If you played a season with a mediocre team, the grind got harder and you needed to change things up to stay on point.
Classic games before madden
Tecmo Bowl Throwback just seems slower or something. Not sure. Just doesn't play the same.
