Tecmo Bowl is the only video game that my dad has beat me on. I'm happy to have at least one video game I can play with him that he enjoys and is good at. For that, it is a model sports video game.

A friend of mine when I was in elementary school's step-dad used to play Tecmo Bowl with us all the time. We could never beat him, but it never stopped me from practicing and learning the ins and outs of the game. Now it's me who's teaching people how to crush at it! haha

Tecmo Bowl was one of the few sports games I could really get into as a kid. Picking Chicago, handing the ball off to Walter Payton and having him dance around tackles all the way down the field never grew old.

  • @Tirgo69

I had Tecmo Super Bowl on my uncle's hand-me-down SNES as a kid but since I didn't understand American football I only really played it with friends. When I got a bit older (and had lost the SNES) I learned how wrong I had been, the addictive and snappy action of the games lured me back through emulation. I actually learned what a "down" was so I could get better at the game.
Tecmo Bowl was a welcome and somewhat surprising addition to the Wii Virtual Console that I picked up, though I always wished they had brought over the superior sequel as well, whether the NES or SNES version.

@@Frigidevil A really fun baseball title was Baseball Simulator 1.000, which gave you normal baseball if you wanted it, but also a kind of super-power baseball in the Ultra league where players had special swings and pitches and each team had a number of "power points" to use during the game to activate the special powers. Really need that strikeout? Spend 5 points on the hyper fastball that goes 160mph.

I am no fan of football, but Tecmo Bowl absolutely delivered a game worth playing. The 2 player option was absolutely brilliant. If you could smuggle a peek at your opponents play selection, you could counter it very effectively. This naturally lead to players hiding their controllers to make selections or simply punching the other player in the arm for daring to peek.

I wonder if Tecmo was going for the Renegade strategy again with their baseball games, releasing separate games for each market to appeal to the region's tastes. They'd release the much more cutesy and anime-inspired Gekito!! Never played the baseball game, partially because there were so many of them in the US between this, RBI, MLB, Bases Loaded, Baseball Simulator 1.000, etc.
Tecmo Bowl, on the other hand? Classic at the time, as it got a lot of play at my house. It was the best football game on the market until Super Tecmo Bowl because Ten Yard Fight, John Elway, etc, didn’t cut it.
I only say “classic at the time” because sports games don’t tend to age well given massive advances in game design and tech over time. The playbook boiling down to “Rock Paper Scissors Touchdown” was appropriate in its time but hasn’t held up between advances in playbooks, pre snap adjustments, roster management, etc. But Tecmo Super Bowl definitely fixed a lot of those issues while keeping the same basic gameplay as the original.
