This could be a hit today. It took me a few times to really listen to it and know why it sounds contemporary. It has the Millenial Whoop in it, making it as much a part of the 2010s as the 1980s and the 1970s. The words, though, are timeless.
It simply didn’t get the radio play it deserved. I remember hearing it in the early 70s on a Southern California radio station, but only late at night. I always wondered why it didn’t become a bigger hit. Don’s style was simply and mellow, and he got swallowed up in the disco craze I’m afraid. Maybe my favorite song by Don.
The most beautiful, amazing story is this was/is my husband's favorite song. After his bitter, painful divorce, he felt compelled to listen to this spectacular song. His ex-wife was like the woman in the song, who had to have it all, and live in her.."CASTLE", and "HIGH SOCIETY COMPANY". He knew his heart had to finally depart and find himself and simplicity. What he didn't know was that a simple, "COUNTRY GIRL" from Texas was coming to Arizona, to see him from 30 years earlier as a couple once. By surprise, both of us had horrible spouses who belittled and betrayed us many difficult ways. He was my first love in my early twenties. He was in Vet School and school was too demanding. The heartbreaking finality was real and life went on. I eventually moved to Texas, and became a country girl and raised my 5 children on a farm. On the other hand, he graduated from Vetinarian School and moved to Arizona. We both left Hoosier land and became the person of values and love........30 years later, the Lord brought me here to Arizona with friends and seminar. I decided with courage to go say hi and "how are you?" , with NO Animal for appt. for ol' DOC!! We both held each other and felt the LOVE once given to each other. He got diagnosed with cancer 2 months later, and we worked together to beat it.. NATURALLY!!.. IT'S been almost 3 yrs. now, and our love grows and GROWS.. This song was a song, but became a reality. We truly know GODS HAND WAS AND IS...on our marriage now...THANK YOU JESUS, THAT I WAS..HIS COUNTRY GIRL..AND WE LIVE IN THE WOODS...NO CASTLES IN THE AIR...JUST PINE TREES AND FOREST AND MOUNTAIN AIR..
Castle Walls ~ echos of love lost , and how we keep hoping the Magic/Love will resurrect its self ~ as we try in vein to "Spark " up something thats gone~ Such a pretty tune~ a little sad but so meaningful~
This song never dies...It's magical. The music , the lyrics and the ability of the singer to give life to the song, is indeed marvelous...It's always pleasing to hear.

Good for you. Have you listened to James Taylor, Jim Croce, Seals & Crofts, John Denver, Simon & Garfunkel, endless good old folks' music. Almost forgot CSN&Y.
I remember when I had first heard this song, it stuck in my head. By the second time I had heard it, I had it already memorized. It became a shower song staple. The range wasn't too difficult, and the vocal variations allowed for experimentation. The song subject is poignant and easily understood as a story. Very underrated. Thanks for the upload.
Well written GP. You note that this song was a, "Shower song staple" of yours. Wow, pretty cool. It's very interesting how the vast majority of us in this world can really belt out a song while showering. Free (literally) and unencumbered by the judgement of others. There are so many frigging contests of all kinds on television these days....WAIT! I just got an idea. A television show for the best --- "Shower Song Singer." Actually, forget it. It could get pretty hairy real quick. Steve
Don McLean was one of greatest songwriters. Musician, and vocalist. He writes a whole story of joy, pain, and the struggles of life. The 70's was definetly the best era for acoustic songs and songwriters.
Oh...my...goodness... what a beautiful melody, lyrics and voice. I accidentally stumbled upon this gem and am in love with it. Thank you for sharing it, great sound quality too 👍
Came across this beautiful song by accident, since then I've totally fallen for it,the words mean something to me,wish I had the courage to leave the castles in the air and seek the place where I know I belong, with nature and all she brings 💜
remember when music had soul. i miss the 70;s and 80's! we lost something in this new millenium. im not quite sure what it was. But I can feel it deep down in my soul. Something is missing from society today. It reflects in the music, tv, and movies. Some kind of magic is gone. Replaced by something less and far from our true nature.
I'll tell u this, instead of this fantastic tune I accidentally started to play an Ian van Dahl (?) tune of the same name, absolutely terrible drivel dance nonsense, but sadly only one of these will be heard by today's youth
Im absolutely enthralled by this magnificent song. It touches my soul, it's probably Don McLean's best ever and that's saying something. Gawd, we had some awesome music in those days.
i was loving this track as a child in the 80ies but forget the title since I found it back here even with lyrics I return every day here to play this amazing song
I was fortunate enough to see Don when he came to Castleblayney lately on his Irish tour..fantastic show..one of my first joys was learning to play American Pie on guitar when I was young !
Great, great Song...I didn't know the lyrics, only the melody, in 1981, when I listened it a lot in the radio, here in my country Brazil: Wonderful,wonderful...

Don McLean is a great artist without any doubt. I must say, though, that this is my favorite song. One cannot always explain the "why" we simply know what appeals/speaks to us in some way. This is beautiful and I must say the video you have chosen does this beautiful song justice. Kudos for that. Class - one either has it or they don't. Thank you.
I'm listening to this, because it was mentioned in a group on FB. I REALLY thought this was the song I'm currently looking for! It sounds a lot like it! Dammit!
I keep trying to get Don McLean inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. I need help. With this song, “American pie” especially, “Vincent” the impact on society, as well as the beautiful song he wrote sung by Elvis Presley, “And I love you so”, ...These songs are all so beautiful and he is so deserving of a place in that Museum and that recognition
I don't know what it is about this song, but I just CAN'T stop listening to it!!! I have to hear it once a day (ok, usually twice a day!), and when I do, I'm immediately carried away to some distant, peaceful place. All I can say is... PURE PERFECTION!!! The lyrics... the music... and of course, Don McLean's smooth, warm voice. It doesn't get any better than that. Except, that I read that Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys holds Mr. McLean in high regards for his talents as an artist. If the mastermind behind Pet Sounds pays you such high compliments, I guess there isn't anything left to say but WOW! You've definitely earned it sir! Love your music, and this video is perfect! May God bless everyone, and keep them safe during these uncertain times. ❤❤😊❤❤
Indeed an awesome job of selecting the most beautiful background for an amazingly beautiful, touchy song..Thx so much for sharing, Ken..Simply loved it..

Exactly my sentiments
Yes
I love you
I never thought about liking the videos of the songs I played on You tube, now I do!
Of all the videos for this song on RUclips, I saved THIS ONE, it's my favorite.....
Criminally underrated song.
No crime is committed for like or dislike the master piece song of Don because enjoyment of music is solely depended on indivdual taste.
One of my all time favourites.
Should be 500k not 61 k
U put it nicely
Yes with a fantastic voice like he has I definitely agree with you mate should have had thousands more likes
"...I'm city born but I love the country life..."

Melhor trecho da música pra mim é este!
A true poet. Peaked at #36 on the U.S. charts on 12/26/81. This should have been a much bigger hit.
In '81 it was a re-recorded version of the song- in '71 it went to #12 along with Vincent as a double sided hit single.

Probably one of the very best videos created with this terrific love song..❤
Always loved this song. Beautiful melody and string arrangements. Takes me to a place and walk down memory lane.
Castles in the air...although through 30 years,it's always a great song for me !
Still get chills. VERY good stuff. Thanks.
"Castles in the Air", which McLean recorded twice. THIS version is the popular 1981 re-recording. Thanks for watching!
