Thanks for making this video! It answered my question perfectly. Your instructions were easy to follow. Very helpful. Being able to manually set the endpoints is great to know.
I don't have a Ronin RS2, but this was put together very well! The outdoor look is finally something different than your regular "tech RUclipsr in a studio"!
Thanks, Rico! I do like your new studio look with the PC monitors in the back. Might consider that look when the weather turns cold again. Appreciate it!
Yes, there's a slider that goes from 0 to 100 inside the Ronin app that connects to the Raven Eye. It's positioned beside the record button inside the app.
Thank you! I updated the description with the Rode VideoMic Pro that I have been using. I think that the RS2 should handle the extra weight of the battery grip no problem, but it might affect the positioning of the focus motor. It may have trouble reaching the lens, or it might have to be positioned more under the lens instead of beside it. 😊
Thanks very much for this video! 🙏It greatly helped me to get my R5C rigged. The one thing I'm struggling with is the power supply. I have an FXLion Nano One, but can't connect it to the upper USB-C as this is already connected with the Gimbal. Do you have a solution for this? Another thing is that for some reason the camera doesn't seem to autofocus anymore 🤔
I don't have that specific lens (yet), however as long as the lens doesn't change weight too much when you zoom, weigh too much overall, and the focus motor can reach it, then there's a good chance it would work. The RF 70-200 looks similar in size to my EF 16-35. Might have to keep that in mind for myself.
Thanks! That's exactly what I was wondering: whether you could use the motor for zoom as well! Great setup! I plan to take the cam off the gimbal for photos in between - so I'm a little worried about lens changes with that plate & rod still on. Did you try that as well?
I’ve mostly been shooting stills with my other camera because it seems like a chore to break it down. I just gave it a trial run. It took me 45 seconds to switch to a handheld configuration with a different lens. I had to disconnect mic, the two usb cables, and then it slides off the gimbal. I then disconnected the lens strap screw. After this the lower base plate comes off easy and then the upper plate with the motor attached. At this point you can switch the lens and it pretty much looks like a normal camera. You could leave the motor and base plates on and swing the motor back. I tried that too, but if you are going handheld, I think it’s better to remove everything and if you don’t adjust the motor, things should stay calibrated. Reassembling took me 65 seconds, and it was still balanced and the motor still had the correct stop points. Great question! I really appreciate the comment and feedback!
Great video, Thank you. Just wondering how can you get the camera display on when connected to Raveneye? I seem having a problem once turn on the Raveneye and my cell phone display got black screen as well. Hope can help. Thank you
Have you found a way to have the main r5 display stay on when using raven eye on a second Mon via hdmi? On my rig as soon as raven eye is active it turns the r5 display off.
On my R5 under the camera menu on page 8, enabling HDMI display to include both flip screen and external display accomplished this. It uses both displays when in the camera view, however if I press the Menu button, the menus only show up on the external monitor and I have to use the camera dials to navigate the menus. I'm on camera firmware 1.3.1.
@@EricCosner thanks, that's basically as far as I got but wanted to use the monitor to control the functions rather that fiddle with the camera on the gimbal, especially it ifs mounted remotely outside a car for example.
@@ShotInTheDark it’s unfortunate it doesn’t have more controls. I’m able to set shutter, aperture, iso, zoom my lens, start and stop recording and control the gimbal functions. One issue I ran into is the RavenEye doesn’t seem to do audio. So I have to unplug the hdmi cable to check audio between takes.
Hi Everton, my first thought is maybe the cold shoe if it's powering the camera, so that things can move freely. I sometimes attach a Ninja-V to the mounts on the base and run hdmi cables to the camera for video. It limits the movement of the gimbal, but perhaps that could work in some fashion. 😊
hey Eric, great video :) did You happen to have Your hands on new RS3 or RS3 Pro? I wonder if this RS2 focus motor will work with new models. New motor (focus motor 2022) is supposed to work with RS3, RS3 Pro an also with RS2 and RSC2. Older motor is still on the market and it's roughly half the price of the new one :)
Hello @joel_te_1098! Unfortunately, I couldn't locate an option for reversing the direction on the gimbal itself, or inside the Ronin app via Bluetooth or Raven Eye. I remember thinking it was backwards myself, but I guess my brain eventually reversed it. If there's enough room, you can locate the motor on the other side of your lens and that usually makes it go the opposite direction. You have to relocate that pole that it's connected to. I remember I did this one time myself.
Yes, it will work for rotating either the focus or zoom. For lenses with electronic focus, you will have to set the stops manually or it will spin too far and collide with the strap. I actually set the stops for the zoom as well, but since posting this video I think DJI patched the firmware because the auto calibration seems to work better nowadays when I’m calibrating it for zoom.
Please reply. I saw you did that strap on the Focus ring. Automatic or manual! How does it work when there is a Tight strap on the Focus ring of the Lense?
@@EricCosner I never knew it existed. Is it specifically for that lense or most lenses are like that? Or is there a Model name sequence for these kind of lenses? Im a Canon Eos R user. Thank you so much for reply
@@themalluwanderer8140 My understanding continues to evolve, but it should work with most lenses as long as you can get the focus motor strap around it and positioned. Outside of this video, I did test using it for focus with my setup. Since my lens focus ring is focus by wire, I had to manually calibrate the end points. The motor needed to know where macro starts and infinity ends, otherwise it will just spin until it crashed into the clamp on that strap. I think a manual focus lens would have "stops" to prevent that and you could use the auto-calibrate to find them. For me, it simply made more sense to use it for zoom. It's a lot of fun to shoot with, but it's a bit heavy at times!
Is it possible to use the R5's eye tracking for focus combined with the cimbals ability to keep the subject in the shot by tracking while you walk around it?
Hello, Thanks for the question! Yes, That should work, as long as you don't have multiple subjects. The R5 tends to pick the closest person for focusing, where the RS2 will follow whomever you set the active track on. I have another video where I show the tripod I use and I demo'd the active track in that one. Unfortunately I wasn’t close enough for eye focus but it should work if you are. I've time-stamped this link to start at that point: ruclips.net/video/K_D70kx8jpk/видео.html
Does the focus motor work with canon's RF lenses, for focussing? Cause it's electric and all... It's hard to find solid answers. Would love to know cause I'm considering buying the Ronin RS2 with the focus motor
Yes, I believe it can work but I’m thinking it will be a manual calibration. My EF 16-35mm 2.8 is also electronic focus. In the video I was using it for zoom, but I just tried using it to focus my EF lens and it worked. I had to set the end points manually at the lens macro and infinity. If you don’t set end points correctly, the focus location will drift and eventually the focus motor will collide with the clip located on the focus motor lens strap. In fact, this is exactly what happened when I tried to use the auto calibration. Also tried using the Ronin app via the RavenEye in hopes it could auto calibrate it but same thing. It probably works best for manual focus lenses. I typically tap the screen to focus and it’s worked well for zooming my rig. Hopefully this was helpful. Thanks for the question!
The only thing i have found i have the 24 to 70 mm RF lens on the r6 canon, and when you zoom in it throws the balance of the gimbal and kind of tilts down, any work around on this?
If you haven’t tried this already, balance the gimbal as best as possible when you are mid-way through the zoom. Maybe 45mm. This way it would evenly distribute the weight and then run super smooth calibration at that focal length. The RS2 is strong but it does have its limits. I have a 70-300mm that I can try later when I get home and I’ll let you know what I run into.
Yes, there's a slider control that adjusts it within the focus motor within the app. I use it a lot when I do product reviews and I'm using the app to position and zoom my lens. The only thing I don't like about the Ronin app is that it doesn't support sound so when you play back a clip, you can't hear and I have to use playback on R5.
They do make an adapter that puts it into vertical, amzn.to/3sf2s91 but I'm not sure it works with the RavenEye. The RavenEye image system normally goes under the horizontal part that is removed in that config, plus I don't know if the remote software would work vertical. You may also have to remove the VideoMic Pro but, in theory, the zoom motor would work. Thank you for the question!
You may have to look for the RS3 Pro and RS4 Pro Combos. It seems they added Pro to the name for the 3 and 4, and I believe the RSC models became the standard RS option.
Hey mate. I just bought an RS 2 and I’ve gotta say that your rig must weigh a tonne lol. I literally just set it up and trying to learn how to use it. I have an older camera with the 80d and I’m using a wide lens so I doubt I’ll set up the zoom control rig thing. It would be nice tho to see that you’re recording from the screen on the gimbal. Maybe I need to update the firmware to start with. Anyway. Thanks for the vid.
That'd be one scenario. The other could be that you need to take manual control over focus, zoom, or both (w/ an additional motor) for video capture. E.g. you want to focus from background to foreground. By using the RS2 handles, this becomes much easier than holding the quite heavy gimbal with just one hand and then fiddling around with the camera with the other. Makes sense?
I have the rs2 with canon 90d but when I put my mic on top, when I go portrait mode my mic hits the dji or is I want to go inverted with the dji then the mic again hits th me DJI .
