With a few modifications a AA tricorder along with the communicator and phaser are great collectables. Plus if it's broken or stolen at a convention, it won't break the bank to replace!
Currently the Diamond Select toy is roughly $50-$60. The Master Replicas is roughly $1000. With some metal parts, skill, and elbow grease a person can turn the $50 toy into something closer to the Master Replicas.
@@aranjuez4411 Not currently, unless something just changed. I asked them. I have the Bluetooth communicator phone and the Remote Phaser, both are excellent.
The "actual" tricorder was a bit larger and this could be used to advantage. The 3 indicator lights were just that, indicator lights. But, the TV screen could just as easily be a TV screen, there were plenty of small CRT sets built, starting with the Sinclair MTV-1 with a 2" screen however I look at Star Trek and me thinks a 4" screen to be about right. CMOS cameras in monochrome and a 420MHz fast scan ATV transceiver module would give a working unit.
I have a 10khz to 30mhz General Coverage shortwave receiver smaller than that tricorder, which make me think it would be cool to put the guts of it, including the screen, into one of those tricorders. The lower compartment could hold a couple if earbud style headphones and a couple of home-made wire antennas.
G7- I replaced my DS strap with a black leather dog leash. I believe I found the leash at Walart, but that was a few years ago. The width was right, and I cut the length to suit myself.
Is there a way to replace any batteries to the AA Tricorder? Is there a way to get the lights etc to work again. (nothing like being 12 years late on this thread!)
There is! The batteries can be changed in the lower compartment. They're hidden behind a compartment that looks like data disc holders that can also be seen on the top compartment.
Both products have been discontinued for almost a decade now. Diamond Select has stopped making Star Trek products on this scale entirely and Master Replicas was defunct for two years before this video was made.
AA Tricorder: The UFP tried to save some money (or whatever its equivalent for them would be) and subcontracted manufacture to a cheaper supply source! 😉
Unfortunately this model tricorder that Master Replicas' made was over a year ago and they have since went out of business. While a new Master Replicas has re-emerged this year, they haven't announced any Star Trek products so it's fair to say that the only way to get this replica is through other markets like eBay.
There is supposed to be a tech company that is working on a real medical tri-corder that can get your BP, temp, resp, and pulse by shining a light on you then the tricorder can send the info to emergency services or doctors. Cool huh.
Jeff D The Tricorder is powered by six AAA batteries. The battery compartment is accessed from the rear panel that is secured by a single flat head screw. Once opened, the batteries are fitted into three rows holding two batteries each.
Charles Baxter I've come to be quite the collector of Master Replicas' items both electronic and static. Judging from my experience, the electronics have not been a problem. My Tricorder still to this day functions as she did the day I got her.
On the other hand, my own electronics failed, just today (or rather, today is the first time I noticed the failure). I disassembled it (not terribly difficult) and was unable to find any physical issue. The battery pack is fine, the power switch is fine, the power electronics board is getting a full 9.5V at its input. And yet, SOMETHING has failed, because not one feature of the unit works. My money is on what APPEARS to be a "fusible link" off the top edge of the power board having failed. But it's hard to be certain. I do know the motor which drives the moire device works, too... checked that by bypassing the other stuff and powering it directly (using a 9v battery) SO... the culprits are possibly: 1) The power board itself. 2) The little "daughterboard" epoxied to the right-hand case section, just below the power board. 3) Something in the "computer head" (which I haven't opened up yet). I was HOPING that this was a well-understood problem, for which a well-defined fix exists. But... so far, apparently, not.
@@carybrown851 You're better off finding a spare parts MR Tricorder to transplant electronics from or simply swapping the electronics from the AA/DST I wish I had seen this when you posted it as the fix is relatively simple yet too time consuming for most people to undertake.
Nice clear video. Thanks. Does anybody know someone who makes leather replacement straps for the diamond select tricorder? I'm also on the market for a m.r.tricorder.
I wasn't speaking particularly to you :) It was a general message that going for the real thing is so much better than silly pretense. If you loved the show you'll be blown away by the real thing. Interstellar ships do indeed visit our planet every day. Join us in busting out the truth so we can have the real deal.
Technically these are replicas of props, not the actual props that were used in the show. If any of these were the real prop, they'd be worth a heck of a lot more than both these repicas combined.
Technically speaking these are all pretend! I prefer to spend my money on something that actually has a function AKA real tools! rather than expensive toys!!!
You can have it both ways. Get real tools with real functionality to create pretend toys. What do you think cosplayers or prop builders do? It may be pretend to you, but a lot of stuff in this world like toys and movies are a billion dollar industry. You may think it doesn't have real function, but sometimes we're not looking for something that has real function. Sometimes we just want to have fun. And I had a lot of fun playing with these toys and making this video.
While Wand is certainly good at the physical properties of of their replicas, I have had some disappointments with their TOS Phaser. Not only are the electronics completely shot (The phaser setting knob no longer registers) and the nozzle broke just after four rotation cycles. And this next Tricorder will have a whole LCD screen on a rotating box. It will be an endurance nightmare! I'm hoping for the best. It does look very ambitious.
@@Jupiter31416 Wand is still posting updates as the weeks go by. We actually got an update from them yesterday and they do bring up the display, but nothing too specific in regards to whether it's flat or rounded. "An example is the position and size of the display. The proportions of the hero prop display screen come from a previous age and do not match those of displays that are readily available today. Squeezing a functioning LCD in the predefined shape and space that Wah Chang determined for it, decades before the technology existed, was perhaps the most significant challenge." The good news is that judging by their 3D rendering they've been showcasing, it would appear that CRT like shape will be retained. Hopefully when this comes out I'll do another comparison review as a follow up to this one.

The first one comes with a full size ash tray while the other one doesn’t 😎

Would be cool if there were an LCD behind that mini window, running by an R-PI or something. ;-)
